Rate this book
“ . . . deliciously crafted.” —Coffee Time Romance There’s more to his magic than his bedroom eyes. And more to her magic than she ever wanted to learn. Sara Myers’ ordinary life turns upside when a gorgeous burglar in her bedroom turns out to be Torian Le Fury, a wizard who tells her she has hidden talents—she’s a witch with enough magical power to destroy—or save—the world. She’s also his intended mate. Sara isn’t particularly interested in saving the world. She’d prefer it if Torian just took his gorgeous self and disappeared from her life, permanently. But when evil creatures known as Dark Ones come after her, she realizes that she’s going to need his help to survive. And as she spends more time with Torian, her feelings for the mysterious wizard grow. But Torian is hiding secrets from Sara. Deadly secrets. Amidst a realm of dragons, sorcery, and illusion, Torian’s mysteries threaten her growing feelings for him. Is love just another spell?

You can tell this is early-mid 2000s and I loved every bit of it. This is a book that really hit me in the nostalgia feels. You miss that PNR of the days of yore, this is it. You've got your fated mates, your scrappy heroine, your bad guy, your big tough broody hero who doesn't know what to do when his mate bosses him around, but he knows he loves it...this is what current Romance needs more of: Paranormal Romance.
It's definitely an early work for this author, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I'd like to see her expand on this world some day. I bet she could create something exciting and bring it into the current decade very easily.
If you read this back in the day, you'll enjoy the nostalgia. If this is your first time going in, be prepared to fall back into the PNR of the early oughts.

Opening paragraphs:

You realize, of course, that the Dark Ones will be looking for her, too."
The wizard nodded.
The small, white-haired woman grunted. “You'll have to bring her back."
His stare was cold. Hard. “She may not want to come."
The woman leaned over a fat black cauldron. “That doesn't really matter, does it?"
He shook his head.
Fog drifted lazily from the cauldron. “When do you leave?"
"Tonight.” His silver gaze locked on the fog.
"Good.” She stared into the cauldron. “Your bride has waited too long as it."

This is an early work of the author's, and is a pleasant read, although really not quite up to the caliber of her later works. The cover looks like a bad episode of Scooby Doo, but don't let that fool you. The contents are decent. There's wizards, super scary bad guys who levitate, and witch burning. Hot, space-warping sex. It's a fun, quick read you can take out in an evening.

Our heroine, Sara, is pretty annoying - she's naïve and mulish (notice I didn't say stubborn, which I consider a good quality). Our hero, Torian, is a walking Renaissance festival cliché. He comes complete with stereotyped buddies Fabian and Blade. (Gotta love the names - they come with their own tournament cup!) But gosh darn it, Sara and Torian find love in the end, despite evil daddy trying to burn Sara at the stake and take over the world - muah hah hah hah! This is a fun read, and if you're a fan of Eden's, I would recommend it.

What a difficult book. Mostly difficult to find as it's paperback only and pretty old for the genre. :)
But honestly I find difficult to give it an honest rating. I didn't like it and found myself bored and ready to DNF it quite a few times. But you see the future Ms Eden shining thorough and I am one of her fans... difficult, as I said.

Ok, let's try this way. If you are a fan and want to support her, go ahead and buy this book. [As long as you know it's one of her earliest and so you might be disappointed]. If you don't know her books, stop and think what you like. But first, knows that she grew up a lot as a writer.

So this is a standard fated-to-be-mated PNR where the heroine has spunk but no backbone whatsoever. There's close to no world-building and not much tension to the story either. Far all the black magic, soul-eating dark wizards there's no grittiness too. To me there was also no reason at all for the "I love yous". But then I rarely found them in this kind of trope. As I said pretty average, on the lower scale of it. :)

Ugh. I really wanted to like this book as I've liked a lot of Cynthia Eden's books in the past.

Sara, unbeknownst to her, is a witch. The Becoming will occur on her 30th birthday when she will come into her new powers. She's hunted by the Dark Ones who want to steal her power. Torian, a wizard, shows up on Earth to protect her and claim her as his mate. Torian will also need to train Sara as she doesn't know how to tap into and control her powers. Sounded pretty good.

Sara alternated between being more virgin-like and warrior princess. She was scared of all things magical, knew she didn't know how to wield her powers, yet, hey, another witch is in trouble and despite the advice to stay behind, she's just gotta go. It wasn't a believable spectrum of naivete and bravery.

I found myself skimming over parts because Sara just annoyed the crap out of me at times. Torian was an OK hero. Not overly alpha, although he lets Sara walk all over him.

Not as good as Cynthia Eden's other works; I could tell that this was one of her earlier stories because her writing style has matured since then.

Torian was both delicious and annoying with his chest thumping, I-am-your-mate-and-I-will-protect-you-so-rawr attitude. This story falls deeply into the fated-to-be-mated category, where the heroine is given absolutely no choice in the matter.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bodice ripper, where forced seduction is the name of the game.. Rather, Sara is a born witch (who prior to meeting Torian thought she was just an average gal), and as she rapidly approaches her 30th birthday, she.. well... she goes into heat o.O It was rather strange to read that type of storyline outside of a were- or other shape-shifter universe..

The chemistry between Torian and Sara was great, but there was something about this story that just didn't do it for me. I'm not sure if it was the incongruity of the whole mating-heat type attraction in characters who weren't animal shifters, or if it was Torian's heavy-handedness and Sara's token resistance yet quick capitulation.

I was disappointed that we never got a real-time introduction to Torian's dragon (I Big Puffy Heart Dragons), and I really felt that Torian's Big Dark Secret really wasn't all that big of a deal. Maybe I'm just jaded from reading so many stories where the Big Dark Secret is so much more horrific or damning to the character's relationship to their future mate.

Overall it was a good story, but as I said, not nearly as good as her more recent works.

Do you love to read books about wizards and witches? Then you need to read this book! This was the 2nd published book for Cynthia Eden. This book centers around Sara Myers who doesn't realize she is a witch and Torian Le Fury a wizard. Torian is from another dimension that has come to our dimension to save Sara from the Dark Ones who are after her for the power she doesn't realize she has. Oh and I forgot to mention, Sara is Torian's pre-destined mate and when Sara finds all this out lets just say she is not all for the plan Torian has for her. Cynthia's style of writing will capture you right from the beginning and not let you go to the last page.

I was very glad to find out that this was one of here earlier novels. This book had me wanting to smack the heroine, cause she was either dumb as ever or naive to a fault...She spent most of the book in denial and just be silly...This book had promise and it showes thhe promise that Ms. Eden goes onto fulfill in her later books. So if this is your first Cynthia Eden books, don't write her off.. the others are MUCH better.

This earlier work isn't quite as good as her newer series, but it is a quick stand alone read.

Not really a big fan of Torian as he seems to only want Sara for the power that she can give him, not just for her or the typical madly in lust with each other reasons in most paranormal smut.

Actually snagged this for my Kindle from the Durham Public Library so there is a digital release now available of this harder to find title.

Awesome Book

This is a great, creative, and fun story of magic and love. The dynamic between Sara and Torian is so great and so believable. It's fun to experience their growing bond while they fight the evil Dark Ones. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal romantic suspense books.
