The characters are easy to fall in love with as the story builds to a book I couldn't put down! Another beautiful piece of art by Sarah Buhl! Damn this woman can write!
Everyone at the Bohme is wondering, “Who’s the graffiti artist tagging all the questions around town?” Each day, a new tag is put up and a question is asked. It begins with “Who are you, really?”
This is the question Brecken and Blake have to ask themselves as they find each other.
Brecken does not believe in happily ever after. She doesn’t believe in screw ups or second chances. She has seen too much failure and heard too many broken promises to believe in anything. When Blake Lawson crosses her path and tries to sweep her off her feet, in typical Brecken fashion, she shows him who’s the one taking the reins in her life.
Blake Lawson has a knight complex. He wants to befriend and save everyone. If he fails, he carries that failure with him.
This is the story of two people finding answers—together.
Another beautiful work of art by Sarah Buhl! Damn this woman can write!
This is the story of Blake and Brecken. But it would not be fair not to say if I didn't love Every. Single. Character. in this book. All of them, both main and side characters bring so much beauty in this story. They are all in there for a purpose. Their actions, their words, just being in this story makes me love all of them.
Blake, gosh, what a wonderful guy. He so pure and honest and so easy to love. The love he shows Brecken is just, sigh, beautiful. Brecken, what a gorgeous woman. Scars from events in her life have made her the woman she's now. Wynn, who we met in Penance. His "silent" being lets us hear exactly what we need to hear. And while he's not a man of many words, he's Blake's best friend and tells him exactly what he needs to hear as well. Hannah, what a clever and witty girl. She has transformed so much since we met her in Penance. Karl, the mysterious guy. (Looking forward to read his story!) And Mason, what a wise kid. (I really hope he gets his own story?)
Just a few of all characters in this book. I can't say I love one more than another, I love them all equally.
The story in itself is absolutely gorgeous. Written in such an engaging way that you don't want to read fast. You want to read every single written word, just so you can enjoy the beauty of this author's words and enjoy it for as long as possible. There is no added drama just for the sake of it. Sarah Buhl proves that you don't need a lot of drama to be captivated with a story. Whatever happens, happens for a reason.
Then, between every chapter, there's this graffiti artist who shows us paintings and thoughts, and while I treasured those words and the questions that were asked, reflecting on it, it also added an extra touch of mystery. We don't know who this artist is, and as much as I wanted to know who the person was earlier on, whether male or female, it was such a pleasant surprise to discover who was behind them, and the reason why the artist painted these questions. It might look odd reading these between the chapters, but beside the fact they add this extra touch, you'll see it all makes sense in the end. It's all intriguingly and perfectly woven together.
And I'm just going to repeat a part of my review of Penance: if you're a lover of words, those that captivate your heart of the sheer beauty of them, read this story. I promise you won't regret it.
Dissonance is a beautiful, captivating and gorgeously written romance of two characters who don't need each other to be complete, but the love they share, enriches them, which makes them be a perfect couple.
I already know that the moment book 3 in the Bohme series will be released, I'll be one-clicking it and won't wait another day to read it!
In my review of Sarah Buhl's first book, "penance.", I called the romance featured therein a perfect love for imperfect people. The characters presented in that awesome debut novel were so amazingly flawed and human that, to me at least, trite character archetypes of the romance/drama genre had been shattered. As a standalone novel, "penance." is nothing short of phenomenal. As the first of a series that is as of yet of undetermined length, I worried about the future of the Bohme's series. Mainly that Sarah had set the bar too high for herself. A series is only good if each ensuing volume is better than, or at the very least, as good as, the preceding volume. While I had no doubt that "dissonance." would be good, I admittedly had doubts about the prospects of it better than it's predecessor.
As it turns out, I worried for nothing. "dissonance." was everything "penance." was and more. "penance." had slight touches of humor. "dissonance." had me laughing out loud several times. Blake and Brecken are not as damaged as Wynn and Hannah were, but they are amazing personas that overcome great personal, emotional, and secular obstacles nonetheless.
As the author has told me, she does not create her characters. The characters come to life in her mind and tell their stories to her. She then puts hands to keyboard and tells their stories as only her unique bizarre genius can. In "dissonance.", Blake and Brecken have much to tell the world, and familiar voices from "penance." have returned to enhance the rich tapestry that is the Bohme even further. "dissonance." is a great sequel to "penance.", but it could easily have stood alone.
As fans of the Bohme novels already know, Sarah Buhl does not write for the masses, and thank God for that. She writes for herself and for those of us who want a story that we have not read a thousand times in one form or another already. Get ready for a story that will touch you in a way reminiscent of "penance.", but is easily a unique experience all it's own that is immensely worthy by itself of your time and purchase.
I have no doubt that the next volume of the Bohme series will also be everything "dissonance." is and so much more. Thank you, Sarah, for sharing the Bohme with the world, and for inspiring me to write again.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review How do you review a book that you loved so much that you want to talk every single detail but you can’t spoil the story for those yet to take the journey? Blake caught my attention and imagination in Penance (side note though you can don’t have to read Penance to understand this story, I HIGHLY suggestion you do) months later I would wonder when Blake story would come and how it would be. He is the one to bring a smile to your face so how can you not want to know his story? I can honestly say I dived into this book with a unique mix of fear excitement. Blake just had to have a great song. And his story is better than great. It is a definition of romance in age that romance does not happen. Not only has Sarah Buhl given one of the best follow up novels I have ever read, and given so that you start here and backtrack to book 1 with ease. She has expanded the cast and brought a vividness to even the smaller of characters that is too often lacking contemporary romances novels. I found myself looking back on my own romance because of the emotions the characters story brings out. Mrs. Buhl seems to have a knack for doing this in her work and I love the work for that. This book is a thinking romance, it the love story I hope to have one day. The ubbergeek in my is dying to fan girl over this story and go make everyone read it so they can fall in the love with the characters the way I have. In the end this is the best thing and worst thing I can say about this book I started out trying to sip this story like a fine wine slowly savoring the characters and found that instead I was chugging it like a frat boy at a his 1st keg party because I simply COULD NOT put the book down. Sarah Buhl is on my MUST READ authors list.
So I actually was blessed to receive an unedited ARC from the author & it's taken me awhile to post a review because I had to go through parts of it again with fresh eyes. Not eyes that was trying to catch mistakes or inconsistencies. Which I have to say there actually were very few of any. It took me a little bit to get into her writing style & how descriptive she was with the secondary characters. But after I got further in I actually really liked that she took the time to do that. It made it more real like you knew everyone & were invested in all the characters & the outcome. Blake is this happy go lucky guy on the surface but as the book goes on you see that he's more than that. Maybe it's that Brecken's seriousness brings that out in him & he brings out the playfulness in her. Blake meets Brecken at a bar & right away he's interested in her but she rebuffs his advances. From there they start to build a friendship as there paths cross. While their friendship & love story grows there is a graffiti artist going around town writing these deep profound questions. Our two main characters end up finding themselves trying to answer them themselves. Which helps them to look deep into themselves & open up to each other. I like that it brought a little mystery to the story. I really enjoyed the story as a whole & can't wait to continue in the world of the Bohme.
I remember when i first came to know penance of Sarah and how i devoured that book, how that book was so very different of everything i was reading at that time, and i became obsessed with that characters, when i finished , i made the 'saga' that i usually do, search for the author page in facebook, goodreads, etc. And i came to have the pleasure to talk sometimes with Sarah and i remember that at that time i think, 'she needs to write another book, preferable about Wynn and Hannah' but i really liked Blake and the friendship that he cultivated with someone so special like Wynn and yeah this guy could give an excellent book. So came dissonance and this book is very amazing in another special way, Blake falls for a strong female character, she is a drummer and wonderful and this book won me. I love strong female characters and Brecken is so amazing, even her stubbornness is the way that life had taught her how to be and Blake is this funny guy who lives his life in a way that make he seems like he dont have a care in the world and is a little frivolous but is the thing that made him be this guy with a heart of gold. Dissonance is one more wonderful book by this amazing author. I hope that the next book be so amazing like the others. :D Thanks again Sarah!
I fell in love with Sarah buhl's writing with the first book in this series, Penance and Oh. My. God. I'm still falling. The banter, the chemistry and the characters are just so damn original and every one of them will touch you. Some of the lines in this book resonated with me on such a deep level and so beautiful they gave me pause. I was so intrigued by the storyline, It moved and flowed so fluidly I couldn't put it down. If you want a story and characters you will never forget and never get enough of than you need this series. you don't have to start with penance in my opinion but it will add to the experience by allowing you to understand the relationships of the characters and connect with them on a much deeper level.
This book is not a continuation of the first book. It is the story of Blake. I love when a supporting character in a book gets a book all their own. I found the story of Blake and Brecken very inspiring. They kept me guessing until the very end if they would be able to overcome their own insecurities and make it work.
This book is just as good as the first. You feel like you in the story and you can't put it down until you find out what is going to happen next!
4.5 stars I loved this book. This is my second Sarah Buhl book and I have become a big fan. I love her writing style. Her characters come to life. There is so much more of a real and relatable story within her books. Her words are beautiful and make you think. Can't wait to see what she writes next.
Behind our social mask lies the beautiful, complicated quagmire of what we humans experience. This well-written story, rich with psychology, has a way of making you feel okay about any mistake you ever made or any shortcoming you feel you have. It's a love story, but so much more! There is also some masterful interweaving of the storyline.
