the perfect imperfection continues
In my review of Sarah Buhl's first book, "penance.", I called the romance featured therein a perfect love for imperfect people. The characters presented in that awesome debut novel were so amazingly flawed and human that, to me at least, trite character archetypes of the romance/drama genre had been shattered. As a standalone novel, "penance." is nothing short of phenomenal. As the first of a series that is as of yet of undetermined length, I worried about the future of the Bohme's series. Mainly that Sarah had set the bar too high for herself. A series is only good if each ensuing volume is better than, or at the very least, as good as, the preceding volume. While I had no doubt that "dissonance." would be good, I admittedly had doubts about the prospects of it better than it's predecessor.
As it turns out, I worried for nothing. "dissonance." was everything "penance." was and more. "penance." had slight touches of humor. "dissonance." had me laughing out loud several times. Blake and Brecken are not as damaged as Wynn and Hannah were, but they are amazing personas that overcome great personal, emotional, and secular obstacles nonetheless.
As the author has told me, she does not create her characters. The characters come to life in her mind and tell their stories to her. She then puts hands to keyboard and tells their stories as only her unique bizarre genius can. In "dissonance.", Blake and Brecken have much to tell the world, and familiar voices from "penance." have returned to enhance the rich tapestry that is the Bohme even further. "dissonance." is a great sequel to "penance.", but it could easily have stood alone.
As fans of the Bohme novels already know, Sarah Buhl does not write for the masses, and thank God for that. She writes for herself and for those of us who want a story that we have not read a thousand times in one form or another already. Get ready for a story that will touch you in a way reminiscent of "penance.", but is easily a unique experience all it's own that is immensely worthy by itself of your time and purchase.
I have no doubt that the next volume of the Bohme series will also be everything "dissonance." is and so much more. Thank you, Sarah, for sharing the Bohme with the world, and for inspiring me to write again.
