"I'm looking for maps of worlds that don't exist."
Max Douglas would rather find adventure in his books than put in any effort at school. So when a stranger named Geoff wanders into the bookstore and starts talking about other worlds, Max can't help but be interested. Following a strange accident during a science experiment gone wrong, Max finds himself tossed into a world torn straight from the pages of his wildest imagination. Accused of wizardry by local knights, forced into a voyage across stomach churning oceans and made to argue with unhelpful dragons, Max desperately seeks a weapon that can fight the true threat to this new world he finds himself in: The Sorcerer Ansgar. With the help of his genius scientist best friend Heidi, and a flame spewing princess named Katherine, Max just might pull it off.
Seventeen-year-old Max lives in Waxahachie, a small town south of Dallas. He loves to read and collect odds and ends. School work and activities are not priorities, but he does love the Archeology Club.
Max is not an athlete:
"He got winded just going up the steps to class, and while he was energetic, he was no good at sports. Footballs and basketballs seemed to have a love affair with hitting him across the head, and he didn't have the reflexes necessary to deflect their affections."
Max doesn't have many friends. His mouth is bigger than his muscles, and he tends to use it when his friends are attacked. His best friend is Heidi, great at math and science. She also tutors Max, with some disappointing results.
Max loves the bookstore:
"His home away from home was the local bookstore, where he'd lose himself for hours in the comfy reclining chair, a book in his lap and the warm light of the lamps glowing against the rich red wooden walls."
Max's adventures begin in the bookstore when he overhears an odd request by an even odder customer:
"I'm looking for maps of worlds that don't exist."
Jason Luthor's Dream Map is an excellent fantasy for both young adults and adults. Mr. Luthor brings the adventure into stunning life with vivid details and tons of action.
This is a fantasy novel based on a boy who can jump between worlds. The majority of the story is set in an alternate world where a war is raging against a sorcerer.
This is a great read, it didn't turn into a must read for me until the end, but still a really good and enjoyable book. I found that the chapter length was slightly lengthy and I feel like it'd be an easier read if the chapters were separated and split up into smaller chunks.
However, it had a well written storyline and if there were a second book, I would definitely read it which really says it all!
For a YA indie fantasy, The Dream Map was quite enjoyable. It tells the story of Max, a gawky teenager who is magically transported to another world by accident and his adventures helping rid the other world of an evil menace. While the story is kind of generic, the characters were really alive and colorful. I liked Max and how akward he was and his friend Heidi who was just all sorts of bad-ass. Kate, the princess, was not your typical princess either, she was a warrioress who cared deeply for her people and would do anything to make sure they were safe.
There were points where some things could have been explained better and some parts that could have been edited better, I occasionaly came across some typos and had to re-read the sentances before it to figure out what the person was trying to say. The world building was nice and you got the general sence of what was what without going into over-detail about it.
Fantasy adventure usually has some romance right? no romance here! no love triangles or wobbly teen angst.. It was chaste and simply a good for you YA novel. Dragons, magic, technology and friendship.. there is a lot of happy and good going on for this book and it makes a great splash in the community of YA fiction
Jason Luthor's the Dream Map, a first book and a fantasy adventure at that is an ambitious undertaking. I read it with some trepidation. After a few pages, well... I was hooked.
The story is about a young man who didn't believe in himself, and his adventures in a land of wizards, knights and talking dragons! His journey to the magical land of LaGuna made him realize what he can do when forced to defend his friends and when faced with a responsibility bigger than himself. This book reminded me of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter actually. I particularly like the way the author introduced new plots just when you're about to get bored and keeps you turning the pages.
I highly recommend The Dream Map to young adults and lovers of the fantasy adventure genre
I'll admit, as I am so busy myself, it took a while to read this awesome book by Jason Luthor. What a beautifully imaginative read, everything from the very first page draws you in.
Exciting and captivating, packed full of wonder and surprize. You'll get no spoilers from me, because you need read it and take the journey yourself. But trust me, you will not be disappointed you did.
I was asked to read this story and found it to be a good fantasy adventure. I liked the idea of dreams being a gateway to other worlds and how the believable characters brought alive the plot.
Filled with mystery, adventure and magic within a land plagued by evil, we read an exciting tale.
I can see this story being enjoyed by a mixed age group.
