A how-to guide for building a branded business asset
You can start off as a complete beginner and learn from an expert how to set up a website, how to blog, how to secure it, how to back it up, how to make money and how to develop an authority website and brand that looks good.
Rob Cubbon was born in Kent an awfully long time ago. He now lives mostly in Thailand running a design business, selling courses and t-shirts, blogging and engaging in other creative pastimes.
A few years ago you could find him stuck behind a computer in a soulless office block in central London.
Being your own boss is an incredibly liberating experience but it can be difficult as well. There never seems to be enough hours in the day for what we want to do.
Rob is driven to help people experience the positive side of entrepreneurship. To encourage others to live their dreams doing what they want to do - and to get paid doing so!
What I thought was particularly useful about this book was that it took me right from the start of the journey. Rob is an outstanding internet marketer, and he makes sure that you're actually getting your target market and pitch right before you even start building the site. Far too many people - beginners and experts - get it into their heads that they must have a website NOW and just fail to engage an audience - any audience. Trust Rob, and he will take you through the whole process from concept to finished website smoothly and painlessly.
I've had this book on my kindle for 4 years! LOL. I was having a clean up last night because the silly thing is full and I couldn't download a new fiction book and I stumbled across this book. I also broke my website two days ago so it seemed pertinent to have a quick read. I was interested to note that almost all the information in this book was still relevant today for setting up a website. To me, that means all the basics were well covered. If you've never set up a wordpress site from scratch this book would be a useful tool (I'm not sure if it's had an update or not since 2014). There's no filler here, just useful info.
This book is for beginners using WordPress to build a website. I like that it’s concise, isn’t repetative and doesn’t contain a lot of pep talk filler. Rob’s style is friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful. Good book!
From Online Entrepreneur Rob Cubbon comes a nice, insightful book on how to create your blog/website using Wordpress from scratch. The book has a lot of good pointers and advice that saves you time and stress by avoiding the many pitfalls and mistakes that new bloggers and entrepreneurs make. Rob shows you that in order to succeed, you only need to FOCUS on two things: Your WEBSITE and building an EMAIL list, "your shield against the unpredictable forces and changes of the net.” In a well-structures and easy-to-follow system of setting up your site, this book walks you through the basic essentials you need to know.
BOOK HIGHLIGHTS
Signing Up with Host Server Choosing and Registering a Domain Name Installing Wordpress Naming Your Blog and Tagline The Importance of and Creating Content The Difference Between Wordpress Pages and Posts Writing the Niche-Specific Blog Building Engaging Relationships for Support Selecting a “Paid” Theme vs. “Free” Themes Customizing Your Webpage with Premium Themes [More advanced] Logo Design Adding Plug-ins Registering your Website with Google Webmaster Tools
In addition to the technical advice Rob delivers, he dives into the importance of creating content for your blog. The message is “love doing it and make it a habitual and consistent practice.” I couldn’t agree more.
The book comes complete with very useful snapshots of the Wordpress site so that you can easily follow how things are done. This is another one of the concepts I liked about the book. instead of just a bunch of text telling you what to do, there are pics accompanying each description/step. By taking a glance at the pics while reading about how it's done makes for a more enjoyable read. Building a website is a series of learning curves so the easier you can make it on yourself the better.
The book gets into more advanced areas that I started to feel a bit “bogged” down by but, the more I followed along the more important this material seemed. I am referring to the customization of the Wordpress theme and purchasing a logo. This is the only part that threw me off because as it is suggested you spend some money [about $250.00] on a logo, it isn’t something most amateur bloggers still lacking confidence are going to take action on right away, but, a good point to consider if your blogging takes off and you want to look more professional.
WORDPRESS ESSENTIALS!
Other good TIPS the author discusses centres around the “Wordpress Essentials" with such tools as:
Googleweb Master Tools, and; Google Analytics. You will receive a code from Google Analytics you can paste onto the Pages of your Blog in order to track visitor statistics. SEO Titles [information in the book is just basic but Wordpress SEO through yeast.com has an extensive webpage and newsletter you can check out. Creating a Contact Form Preventing SPAM and the necessary PLUG INS for this. Includes direct links to the sites so you can download and install the plug ins right away. Cache and Speed Backing Up Your Site/Security Social Media Sharing
Although the author admits that the list is a presented to be “dry” and may appear boring to do, the steps presented are must-do and you are encouraged to try it yourself. After giving these a shot it wasn't nearly as difficult as I had imagined it to be. The book walks you through the steps so anybody can do it. Any problems you run into rest assured there is always somebody with the solution, if not Wordpress itself with their multiple training videos to support you in your website creating. As I read through the book I made a checklist of all the steps so that, for future reference if I decide to create more websites, I can just refer to the list and, because I did it all once already, it could go faster the next time around.
Finally the book moves into one of the best parts of defining the most important aspect of creating an online business and that is Relationships. Again there are some good pointers here such as: commenting on other blogs and websites, uploading a Gravatar photo, forums and of course, connecting with email. The "making money” section is a nice little bonus and wraps this book up nicely.
I would highly recommend this book “Create the Website that you want” because for the low price you pay, it is packed with lots of good information on getting your website up and running, picking a theme for your blog/site, and then promoting your site while helping other people with their success. The author as well, Robb Cubbon, speaks to the readers with a genuine voice and style that keeps you engaged in the process of creating. A definite resource for building a presence online.
Fast read, lots of great advice. Good for those who want to start a blog or are thinking about improving the one they have (if you started yourself learning as you go, this is a great refresher). It will also have some pointers to improve what you are working on.
