Everything Caerus Thornton touches turns to gold... or dies.
Thanatos, god of death, has an almost flawless record until he encounters Caerus. For some reason, he can’t fulfill the simple task of delivering death to the tiny blonde fated to die in the delivery room.
Furious at his failure, the Fates exile Thanatos on Earth, where he must remain until he redeems himself in the eyes of his fellow gods.
Somewhere along the way Thanatos finds himself falling for the woman he's spent more than two decades trying to kill.
Let me start off by saying I don't normally read romance. The idea of heaving bosoms, blossoming flowers of love, and throbbing manhood makes me gag.
There is NONE of that in LUCKY. This novel is the kind of quick-paced, witty, hilarious read that makes the wary reader forget the pesky genre tag. The dialogue between Caerus and Thanatos is classic Renee Miller--funny, real, and dotted with creative profanity only she could come up with.
The love story--and yes, it's there--feels organic and realistic. Nothing forced about the draw between "Than" and Caerus and readers can't help but be pulled in by their feelings for one another and the lengths they go to protect it.
I know what you're thinking--what about a bit of the hot and heavy? You won't be disappointed. Rawr.
Lucky is the first in Miller's "For The Love of Gods" series and I for one want the second in my hands NOW.
Lucky is one of those books where the characters are so well written, you have a hard time forgetting them. Thanatos "Than" and Caerus are an unlikely pair, with Than being the God of Death and all, and Caerus being just a lowly mortal. In fact, it's Than's inability to kill Caerus since her birth that started this sorted tale. Not that he didn't want to, but she's just that lucky. Or is she? As he continues to try to do his job, he realizes that maybe, just maybe she's something more, and that maybe the Fates have made a mistake choosing her thread for cutting. And maybe his feelings are a bit more complicated - Death has feelings? For a mortal? Well, that's got to be a sin, right? The Gods are not happy.
Lucky is a fun, fast-paced romp through mythology and Renee Miller does an amazing job guiding us and entertaining us with her usual charm, wit, and imagination.
I've read lots of stories with the Greek gods or about the underworld, most were children's, Middle Grade, or YA. So getting an adult look at these characters was both refreshing and enjoyable.
I loved Caerus. She hurt every time others died around her, but much of it was hidden under her cold exterior. She knew that making friends with people would just mean they would die, so she held everyone at arm's length -- to protect them and herself.
So Thanatos walks into her life (though he's always been part of it -- she just didn't know) and turns it upside down. Witty banter and some hot scenes ensue ... along with loads of trouble.
First I need to disclose that I won this book in a contest and am glad that I did! :-)
I'm not exactly sure where to start my review of Lucky to be honest with you.
There are a lot of Mythological Gods in this book and for me that made it a bit difficult to keep it straight. I hard time reading the names (like Thanatos, Dionysus for example) but with Renee Miller's writing skill that should not stop you from reading and enjoying this book. I, myself, was just had a hard time growing up keeping the Mythological Gods straight but if you ask my 14 year old son he can tell you all about the Gods in the book and then some!
I LOVE how the story line is between a God and a mortal. I really love how it centers around a mistake on one of theirs part that must be fixed and a huge lesson that needs to be learned. All through the book I could put any number of people I know into the characters situations and hope that they learned and for me that makes a book even better.
Please do yourself a favor and pick this book up and give yourself a chance to live in the lives of Gods and humans again! <3
Is there anyone less likely to find romance than the god of Death? You sure wouldn't think so, at least not without some divine intervention - oh. Well. This is one interesting story of an unlikely romance between two unique individuals. I think Thanatos deserved to find a little love, considering the family he was stuck with. That's one bunch of fusty, overbearing, humorless gods. They're all pretty full of themselves, too. No fun at all to be around. No wonder Thanatos was a loner.
Renee Miller did a wonderful job of portraying all of the gods in a manner true to Greek mythology while giving them distinct personalities and unusual motives. This book well written and fast-paced, with a fair amount of humor. I found it very entertaining, and I'd certainly recommend it.
This book was just okay for me. Caerus Thornton was supposed to die before she was born, but somehow Fate was thwarted and it keeps being thwarted for 25 years. Thanatos has been trying to kill her for that long, and now he has been exiled to earth for failing his mission. This was a convoluted tale of intrigue, deception, destruction and even humor. But I found myself becoming confused with all that was going on and all the different gods. The destruction by Dionysus was a bit too much for me. It was nice to see both Caerus and Thanatos discover parts of themselves that had been missing and I did enjoy the HEA.
I absolutely loved this book. I love how relatable the Gods were and seeing their own personal struggles and how they manage to work through them. I fell hard for judgemental and quite biased Thanatos. I loved this so much I had to get the next two books in the series, all the shenanigans by the Gods definitely kept me going
