Masterson #2

Here and Now

Rate this book
Laura Masterson is determined not to let her handsome boss, Chase Dillard, distract her from attaining her personal best as a physical therapist. Especially because her new employer is the same world-class athlete who broke her heart back in the day. He put their relationship on hold to fulfill his Olympic potential, but soon realized that his victories were hollow without the woman he loved by his side. Chase definitely has some ground to make up if he wants to win Laura back.

*sighs*

My librarian must have seen me coming. The third book by Ms Monkou I've read in a row. Then, just because fate likes me so much, it's one of those 'happy family' romances.

Plot: Laura Masterson is a physical therapist - she's so new, the ink is barely dried on her certificate, but she gets this job in Atlanta where she can get experience, enjoy the sunshine (I say this as an envious Brit) and met new people. Right?

Wrong!

Her ex- that dirty, selfish SOB - the one who gave her that speech, "It's not you, it's me and my Olympic career. I'm sure you understand." is now her boss.

Laura is supposedly not trying to hear (ooh, am I getting the speech cadence correct?) Chase's excuses, and I'm with her. Chase had to cut short his Olympic glory because his body broke under the strain and is feeling sorry for himself. He sees Laura and wants to woo her back - you get the feeling because he's nothing better to do, since his Olympic dreams are ashes in his mouth.

Unfortunately for us, the readers, Chase doesn't really do much wooing. A lot of winking, sure, to the point of me thinking that he might have had a facial tick that needed to be looked at. But wooing? Showing how he's changed? Asking if it's too late to try again? Here I am? Chase doesn't do sweet FA.

Nope, Laura folds under Chase's half hearted wooing like a castle of cards. There was no tension in the book at all, no 'would she' or 'wouldn't she?'

Then, of course, there's a back story, in that Chase's parents have issues with Laura's family, because Laura wasn't good enough for their little boy.

Laura should have kicked Chase and his parents to the curb like last week's garbage. There's just no redeeming qualities there.

Oh, and nitpick, but the people on the cover do NOT look like the characters as described in the book. That's an editorial fault - but if you can't find suitable models, just do an illustration. Us readers will appreciate it (and it doesn't look as cheesy as the covers). Thank you.

Short of desperation, I'm giving this author a miss.
