Poetry by its very nature should be fully experiential, create imagery, becoming visceral and evocative of emotion. The very nature of the poem exists in the sensual world and, thus, it is erotic at the core. In poetry, I hear the words lyrically, as spoken, perhaps even whispered or sung; I see images as they create patterns of meaning in meter - and I see the face of my lover.

The themes are love, lust, fulfillment. Each poem a journey of expressing something heartfelt. An outpouring of wonder at the joy of rediscovery and re-emergence from a profound loneliness and desolation. We can feel the pain that has been before, and experience the rebirth, literally from darkness into light.

The language is exquisite. Some poems are wordy - expressive torrents that wash over the reader.

“The cicadas make the movie soundtrack
As we move in the way that lovers do
To heart beats and breezes
Rising and falling
And listening to the river
We flow”
Lyrics

Others are minimalist, where every word fulfills a paragraph of meaning and the very simplicity becomes an art-form.

“Sometimes
Melts
Into Always”
Citadel of Me

Throughout each poem, and the collection, we experience emotional and physical ecstasy, at times almost overpowering. Deeply personal and yet made public, speaking to anyone with a romantic soul, a yearning for more.

E.M. Hodge takes hold of your heart and soul and twists them along with her angst, then releases the visceral pleasure of new love, new desire and the physical bliss of physical exploration.

She is a wordsmith of the highest order, where every word fills a place and a purpose, every phrase a rounded and well-mannered addition to the flow of feeling.

Whether you normally read poetry or not is irrelevant. This is a book for lovers, for dreamers, and most of all, for women who love women. Read it to lighten your own darkness with hope or to woo a new love with passion. Share it with your partner in bed every night. Speak it out loud and revel in the glory of a perfectly expressed emotion.

“She
On top of me
Inside of me
My body
Captured
Anticipating
Needing

To be undone”
Undone

This is, without a shadow of a doubt, a love story from one woman to another. A rediscovery of emotion the author thought unobtainable, a life and passion she had despaired of achieving. If you love women you cannot help but engage with the passion and fall in love with the words.

I'm not fond of poetry, mainly because it doesn't speak to me, until I read bits and pieces of Hodge's poetry that she wrote here and there and I liked them. With that in mind, I hunted down her book UNDONE. Stream of consciousness, her words created images for me, memories, fantasies, feelings I had had no words for. Yes, a quick read, at one gulp, but coming back to pages, lines, images to think about, sensual, erotic, musical, emotional. It's going to be a read and re-read book to capture or explain a mood, a feeling, something I myself have no words for. She has supplied the words.

Though I've spoken with Hodge for years and read her poetry online, this is the first of her books I've read. I knew already that I appreciate her poetry because of what she shared on the internet. What is beautiful about this book, however, is she capture the beauty, fear, excitement, and the ordinary of a new relationship. Another thing that's beautiful is who Hodge shows that love transforms the beloved into something new. I highly recommend this book to lovers!

"Poetry is what in a poem makes you laugh, cry, prickle, be silent, makes your toe nails twinkle, makes you want to do this or that or nothing, makes you know that you are alone in the unknown world, that your bliss and suffering is forever shared and forever all your own"― Dylan Thomas

There is no better way to exquisitely describe this book.E.M.Hodge has a gift and from the first page to the last her words fill you with reverence.Several caught my attention from the very first word, ‘Sunrise’ ‘Wake-up’ and every line of ‘Reading’ allowed me to re-live Sunday morning bliss.

As T.S. Eliot wrote - "Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood" and with that in mind Undone is filled with powerful words written by a poet who is undoubtedly passionately in love with language and the need to express emotion on a celestial level.

My personal favorite is ‘Weirdo’. It’s not me but so is. It would be a travesty for women not to read and enjoy this wonderful catalogue of work.

So to finish this review I’m going to quote Eli Khamarov - "Poets are soldiers that liberate words from the steadfast possession of definition". Dr Hodge is most definitely a soldier.

Undone.. Wow, so raw, so real. Sometimes veiled, sometimes not. Exquisitely open, as only poetry can be. I love how much is said in so few words. Sometimes innocently provocative, always tantalizing and scantalizing (using my literary license). Bravo, E.M. I think my favorite is Dream Escapades as I love trees and roots, light and subsequent shadows, and the depth of the word pictures you create.

I would like to thank the author of this book for re-igniting my passion for poetry. E M Hodge has a wonderful way with words, sometimes playful, sometimes soul searching but mainly sensual. This is poetry at its most intimate. Poetry to be shared with your loved one.
