I both love and hate books like this and as a rule I tend to avoid them, I don't like the wait between books and once I start I end up getting addicted and paying well over the odds for very short books which ultimately leave me feeling somewhat cheated so you can imagine just how happy I was when I found this complete set free. The first book 'The New Hire' introduces the characters and sets the scene, Rachel Adams is a Pulitzer award winning journalist who goes undercover as Ms Penelope Potters to work as personal assistant to billionaire Ian Payne 'The Prodigious Prince' in an effort to find a chink in his armour. The story unfolds as Rachel reveals exactly what happened between her and Ian, from her job interview to her first day and the journey to Ian's House. This book worked, it got me interested and intrigued I wanted to know how Rachel and Ian started their relationship, what when wrong, exactly what did he do that put her in the position we find her in, I'm hooked, as I knew I would be which is the reason I avoid this short serial books. 'The Spy's Burden' is where I started my struggle with Rachel, the more she talked the less I liked her, in the last book I got swept along and didn't really stop to consider that she was lying she'd gone into this with a false identity which was fine I suppose until things started to get personal between her and Ian. In 'The Rogue Agent' my struggle continued and this became a thread throughout this series and I think at this point I would have stopped had I actually been buying these books, a romance only works for me if I like both the main characters and want them to be together I wasn't sure if I liked Rachel that much, or even Ian for that matter. I don't like deceit but I can tolerate it if I convince myself it's for a good cause but once emotions become involved I struggle and I'm struggling with this. We discover the depth of Ian's betrayal, or we think we do and we also get a surprise as we get dragged further into this story. It's difficult to say much about the last two parts since I don't want to give anything away or spoil it in any way. 'A Betrayal Uncovered' I'm still struggling with Rachel and this book went as expected, I guessed how it would end and it's looking like it will all go as expected, I'm still hoping for some surprises though.
'The Spy's Redemption' the conclusion, went as expected but also had a few surprises thrown in there as well. I've struggled throughout this series with Rachel mainly because her deceit made it difficult for me to empathise with her, I know she's been hurt and feels wronged but in all honesty I couldn't see that it was anyone else's fault. Even though this collection was free I don't like short serial books, it's not just the wait, although obviously not in this case since it was a collection but it's not only that or the cost but also the writing style, every episode ends with a 'pull' something to pull you into reading the next one and then the one after that, they're all written with the intention of getting the reader to continue on, which is fine we know this beforehand, the first one is nearly always free to draw you in but my problem is that in most cases once I've finished I feel a bit deflated. This said I have enjoyed this read but I did get it free I don't think I would have been happy if I'd paid £6.57 or $10. 48.
