Four lights . . . Three . . . Two . . . One . . . Lights out. Time to move.
“It means next time, I’m gonna bury you.” I snatched the scoresheet from his hands, resisting the urge to crumple it and throw it at his forehead. “In your dreams.” He stepped in close, voice low and smug.
“You’ll look so good in my dreams.”
The markings on his face pulsed with a deep red light, and I wondered what they meant. Whether they turned any other colour on the spectrum. Whether the crimson was solely for me.
“Do you want to fall apart for me, little comet?”
“Somewhere along the way, you became everything to me, little comet. And I’ll gladly feel the burn if I get to hold you close.”
When people looked at me, it was with admiration, lust, or at the very least, envy. Rev . . . he may as well have looked through me. To him, I seemed to be an inconvenience. An annoyance. He’d sized me up and decided I wasn’t a threat. I was nothing. And it shouldn’t have even mattered. I knew that. But it did.
“I don’t play games I can’t win, Kai.” My hands wrapped around his throat, thumbs pressed against his pulse point. “And I’m not playing yours.”
We didn’t speak, just stared, locked in a silent standoff. Our eyes were twin pools of fury, yet worlds apart. One black, one hazel. One alien, one human. I thought Kai would push away and storm out. But he didn’t. He just murmured, “Fuck it.” And then his lips were on mine.
“Promise?” There was a tremble in his voice, the kind that only comes when someone is trusting you with the softest part of themselves. Whatever defences I had left around Rev dissolved in that moment. “I promise.”
“Don’t worry, baby,” I whispered, our foreheads pressed together. “I’ll have you begging before we’re done.”
