She was a survivor—until the weight got too heavy to carry.
Jazmine Mitchell had kids too young, fell in love with the wrong man, and ended up chasing her next high instead of chasing dreams. Set in Lubbock, Texas, Broken Promises & Burnt Spoons tells the unfiltered story of a woman battling demons—some she inherited, some she created—and the children left behind to carry her name.
Told through powerful first-person storytelling, raw inner thoughts, and even the voice of her daughter years later, this novel cuts deep into the truth about addiction, foster care, family betrayal, and what it really costs to fall apart in front of the world.
This ain’t a comeback story.
It’s a survival story.
And sometimes… surviving is the victory.

Written by Shay Marie, this book is not for the weak. But it is for the ones who’ve been there. The ones who know.
Though this story was short, it was incredibly impactful. It was heartbreaking—sad in a way that hurts you deep down to your core, to your soul. It showed how pain can be passed down from one generation to the next, and it’s devastating that it had to continue the way it did.
This was a great read. I’m not upset about it at all—it just makes me sad, because it’s a reminder that these are the kinds of struggles our communities are plagued with across the world. Not just in my community, but in communities everywhere.
It’s painful, but it’s also reality. And that’s exactly what made this story so powerful. Great read.
The story was a definitely good read i love how the author told the story raw and to the point of how the environment or circumstance can change how a person life changes. This was a new author for me I will be checking out other work she has. Thank you for the realest and rawest story told job well written.
However, this is either my 3rd or 4th book by this author and I just wish she had an editor or took the time to read through her book before publishing it bc all of her books have a lot of spelling or grammatical errors which can be kind of distracting at times.
