An uplifting, magical story about a once-celebrated antique appraiser who gets caught in the thrall of a strange, powerful necklace—one that has the power to transform her life, and the fortunes of those around her.

Grace Schaffer is adrift. Raised by an eminent but emotionally withdrawn scholar, her talent landed her a coveted spot on Antiques Roadshow, where she charmed legions of viewers. But she's recently fallen from her gilded perch, losing her career, her marriage and her very identity in the process, leaving her with the same question her clients so often ask of What is it worth? Or, the question that beats beneath it, What am I worth?

In a last-ditch attempt to revive her career, she signs on to an amateur travelling show, where an old, tarnished  necklace catches her eye. Imbued with a strange and sudden confidence, she begins predicting the precise amount that objects will sell for at auction—far beyond their market values. As she performs act after act of this seeming divination, Grace catches the attention of detractors and fans alike, all clamoring to see what she’ll do next. Caught in the necklace’s strange and possibly dangerous thrall, Grace is soon thrust into the hunt to uncover a lost masterpiece… before it disappears forever, taking her hopes and dreams with it.

As Grace struggles to find her own worth outside the comfort of marriage, the limelight of career,  of even the necklace’s awesome power, she comes face to face with the hardest appraisal of all…herself. Antique takes readers on an exhilarating journey of art and love, one that will leave them believing in the magic that lies within us all—should we dare to use it.

If you are a lover of antiques you will love this book. Whether it's for the thrill of maybe finding that elusive piece of history that will bring you fortune or just the happiness of finding something that speaks to your heart.

I really enjoy watching The Antiques Road Show on PBS. And also searching all the nooks and crannies of all the shops along the antiques trail. The old books, paintings, and the occasional piece of furniture call to me.

This was a fun page turner following a young appraiser and her search for her "grail."

I really enjoyed this debut novel. It started a little slow but the magical realism experienced by Grace, an antique appraiser, was a pick me up, for sure. Grace had reached the summit of appraisers by being on the popular Antiques Roadshow but fell out of grace (no pun intended) and had to start over. The appraisers were an interesting group, and Jerome Zwick, was probably my favorite character. He supported Grace in his own way and helped her regain her confidence and independence. It made me happy to see Grace come into her own. I rate this book a 3.5 rounded up to 4⭐️.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Antique is a thoughtful magical realism novel centered on Grace, an antique appraiser who discovers a mysterious necklace that gives her the uncanny ability to predict exactly what objects will sell for at auction. While there is a magical element at the heart of the story, this is ultimately much more about Grace’s personal journey than about the magic itself.

One thing I appreciated was Grace as a protagonist. I’m often hesitant when reading female main characters written by male authors, but Grace felt authentic, vulnerable, and determined. Watching her gradually find her voice and wrestle with questions of purpose, identity, and legacy made for an engaging character arc.

The novel reminded me quite a bit of Aftertaste by Daria Lavelle. Where Aftertaste used magical realism to explore the fine dining world, Antique uses it to explore collectors, appraisers, and auction houses. As someone who knows very little about antiques, I found that aspect of the book fascinating. The details of the auction world were immersive and often surprisingly ruthless.

The strongest theme for me was the exploration of value. The story repeatedly asks what makes something worth what it is worth. Is it rarity? History? Sentiment? Ownership? The answer is constantly shifting depending on who is looking at the object and what story accompanies it. That theme carried emotional weight throughout the novel and connected beautifully to Grace’s own search for meaning.

The family relationships are also a major part of the story and provide much of its emotional depth.

My main criticism is that I would have liked more development for some of the supporting characters, particularly Victor and Grace’s mother. Their relationships with Grace felt important, but I wanted a deeper exploration of both.

Overall, this wasn’t entirely my usual type of book, but I’m glad I read it. Readers who enjoy thoughtful literary fiction, light magical realism, family stories, and niche professional worlds will likely find a lot to appreciate here. And if you’re interested in antiques or collecting, this one feels especially worth picking up.

Thank you to Seth Panitch for providing me with a gifted copy of Antique.

Appraising art and ourselves (traveling roadshows NJ, New England, Indiana, upstate NY, NYC, London (ancient times to present-day): Antique is so electrifying, it’s hard to believe it’s Seth Panitch’s debut novel.

On display is a passion for the arts. Creative juices. A flair for the dramatic by the Professor of Theatre at the University of Alabama who runs their MFA Acting Program. Having written Off Broadway plays and films, he appears to have transmitted his performance art writing skills into another format to produce a wildly entertaining literary performance.

Crediting the “experts, appraisers, creators, producers, and guests of the Antiques Roadshow,” (now in its 30th season), his author notes also say he “cannot watch the legendary show without laughing, crying, or learning something new about the art within us all.” So it follows then that he’d want to open us to the mystique of the art world crafting an original story with heart, while offering an impressive knowledge of ancient history and antiquities pitting compassion against prevailing art market appraisals.

This fictional roadshow takes us to the world’s top auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s, to Bonham’s and Heritage Auctions, and to Main Street ones.

America’s Antiques Roadshow was inspired by the British version that launched in 1979. Even the description of it shows off Panitch’s energetic writing style: as “an empire that spanned nine British Prime Ministers and eight US Presidents spawning a worldwide sensation over which the sun, quite literally, never set.” Expect, then, to feel the sensational frenzy of an exciting auction as if you were sitting in the audience holding your numbered paddle glued to the auctioneer caught up in the process.

Inventing a struggling Appraisal Experts Roadshow with a cast of appraisal characters needing to prove their worth, the main character, Grace Schaffer, is most need of recovering her former glory and sense of worth.

Once a celebrity appraisal expert at Christie’s, Grace has fallen from grace. As a consequence, her Manhattan art gallery Schaffer and Schaffer has also fallen on hard times. Reputations in the art world can fall precipitously; trust is hard to earn back. The second Schaffer is a painful reminder of her renowned art historian father who passed away two years ago when the novel opens. Flailing, she feels disgraced and is terribly lonesome.

Grace could use a bit of magic. Panitch delivers it to her.

In so doing, his vision for putting on a brilliant literary show not only asks “What is it worth?” but “What am I worth?” Panitch’s immeasurable gifts – dazzling prose, setting up intrigue, and insight into human nature and groupthink – reveal a master at his game.

Antique raises the bar on fiction with its finesse of how all of us are constantly appraising everything and everyone in life. Including, especially, ourselves.

Grace’s story began in childhood, “swept up” into her father’s world. Albert was one of the “True Art Historians, and her “magnetic north.” In awe of him; he, sadly, in awe of himself. The only time she could enter his “forbidden world,” the only way she got to spend any time with him, was in his stately office. All it takes are two words to picture a young girl respectfully knocking on the door of her father’s kingdom, addressing him as his Columbia University students’ do, “Dr. Schaffer,” he never correcting her, for you to know something odd is afoot.

Meanwhile, Grace’s mother Shirley is treated with borderline disdain. Condescending messages sent that she couldn’t possibly grasp the complexities, intricacies, history of Art. The triangular family dynamics are provocative; gratifying when Grace and the reader see what the real Shirley is made of.

Grace’s story is one of second chances. A die-hard supporter from her previous life, Elaine demonstrates what’s it’s truly like when a colleague’s respect is no-holds back as she sticks her neck out to support discredited Grace, offering her a way to re-enter the appraisal world, revive her gallery business, and herself. When she invites Grace to join the Appraisal Experts Roadshow, Grace is unsure of herself, rusty, wary and weary of others appraising her, directly or indirectly. One appraiser is particularly nasty; satisfying when she gets what she deserves artfully without the crassness.

When Grace comes into possession of something her colleagues don’t have, something comes over her. You can guess at what might have happened to account for her downfall, but you’ll never guess what is about to happen.

Panitch never bores. Starting on page one, he introduces an ancient object that’s at least five thousand years old. Its powers are bewitching, as is the prose:

“The object is a necklace, once “six strings . . . threaded with the riches of Empire.” Its provenance traced back to the “Babylonian God of Wisdom.” Passed down through the Biblical ages to Egypt, to the Sinai, to the Ottoman Turks to 1917, the “Common Era,” when it’s “stolen by an American spy. What’s left is one string: “twelve cylindrically shaped stones of pure onyx spaced with Nubian gold nuggets . . . fastened in the very center, between two crimson bloodstones, hung the celestial globe itself: a marble-size stone of the finest lapis lazuli, mined in the ancient limestone beds of Pakistan. It emerged from the earth a perfect sphere” with “golden pyrite inclusions that shimmer like starbursts across the deep blue face of the stone. To hold the globe was to grasp the Cosmos.”

Grace is drawn to the deep blue stone artifact despite its poor condition. Lapis lazuli is a stone with ancient and modern spiritual history. Believed to have “healing” powers that can reveal “inner truth.” Again, fitting for Grace. Her appraisal of the object shocks. Grace doesn’t back down, instead digs in, not wanting to crush the dreams of someone in need of a break, luck, a boost.

An element of the appraisal process we might not have considered, given we’re inclined to focus on the currency side of it, is the emotional impact of letting down the owner of the object. Grace will surely win your heart. So too her low self-esteem believing the “celestial globe” has granted her fantastical powers.

The ancient stone conveys ancient history of the Cosmos. How the Earth was considered spherical “dates all the way back to the 6th century BC,” chimes in the oldest appraiser Jerome on the fictional roadshow. At seventy, the thirty-year age difference with Grace charms as their relationship comes alive for each other.

Panitch’s antique roadshow makes stops in shopping malls, historic venues, small cities, and big ones. At each one, Grace holds the “celestial globe” in her hands, feels it go from cold to warmer, then starts spinning “faster and faster,” getting hotter, “metamorphosing into dizzying, impossible combinations.” The force of its energy fires up Grace to appraise seemingly worthless objects at astronomical valuations.

Along with the drama, you’ll detect a melancholy sentiment on how the “Modern and Avant-Garde” movements have taken over today’s art market beyond anything imaginable.

So too Panitch’s spinning of Grace’s extraordinary appraisals. How they turn out, and what they say about Grace.

Seth Panitch, the Author of "Antigue" has written a captivating, unique, and astonishing novel. The Genres for this bewitching novel are: Magical Realism, Fantasy, Fiction, Women's Divorce Fiction, and Women's Life Fiction, Mystery and Suspense. The author vividly describes the landscapes, the antique and creative objects, and the dramatic and colorful characters. The characters are complex, complicated, creative, talented, quirky, artistic, and each character has their goals and problems. The author writes about antique appraisers, and also mentions Road Shows, where people show their antiques to see if they are worth anything. Some questions that I ponder as I read this book: Do you believe in magic? Do you believe a physical item is magical, or a person has magic in themselves?

The female protagonist, Grace Schaeffer is searching for the meaning in her life. She is a divorced, well-know antique appraiser that used to work on Antiques Roadshow. Somehow she feels the need to find herself and her mission in life. Grace discovers an antique necklace, that has weathered many seasons, but the lapis in the center gets cool and hot. Grace starts working in small Roadshows, and does appraisals for antiques, jewelry and Art. Somehow while wearing the necklace, Grace has strong feelings about the appraisals of certain things, and puts them at a higher price. She is so enthralled, that other appraisers think she has overstepped. She gets both positive and negative feedback on the worth of the items. It seems that Grace could be headed in a dangerous or questionable position.

An old painting is at question, as Grace is convinced is is quite exceptional and valuable. She is convinced a certain Impressionist Artist created this. This puts her at odds with her ex-husband, Vic, who is and expert at appraising as well. Grace has to learn the hardest appraisal of all, the value of herself. I appreciate how the author shows the love and appreciation for artistic creations. The author also discusses the importance of self-worth, family, friends, community, love , hope and magic. I highly recommend this magical book.

You know I have a thing for unique stories, and this one completely captivated me.

Antique is a magical, uplifting novel that blends the fascinating world of antiques with a journey of self-discovery.

It’s about finding confidence, embracing change, and discovering that our true worth can’t be measured by anyone but ourselves.

Captivating!

I was so intrigued from the beginning to the end, the characters, the mystery, the magic, all kept me on the edge not wanting to put it down! Every part of me cheering Grace on through the journey as I could easily relate to her feelings. It was beautifully written with emotional connection. I love how the past was interwoven with the present and how it all came together at the end. I couldn’t put it down, read it in 2 days! We’ll done!

Sometimes, the magic of a novel lies not within the author (though it is where the magic starts), but in the reader – if the reader is willing to believe in the magic. For me, Panitch made the magic come alive in his debut novel! As I read, I was transported to each city and 'roadshow' set, the characters and their emotions leapt off the page, the jewels, the stars, the constellations all sparkled and glowed. Yes, the story centers around antiques, OLD things, relics reserved for dusty shelves, back closets, and cobwebbed attics; BUT, it questions the very meaning of ‘OLD’.

For me, the magic lay in its character driven plot and the full character arc of the FMC, Grace (Gracie) Schaffer. Panitch makes the reader feel everything Grace does, from the warmth of the lapis lazuli necklace, the feeling of an artifact with life and meaning simmering below its surface, to her all-true emotions of self-doubt, shame, wonder, passion, and the ever-present longing to belong, be noticed, and to be loved.

Antique sets the stage to truly ask, “what is ‘WORTH’”…and quietly urges the reader to seek true worth, not only in each character and artifact, but in ourselves.

I have to say if you are looking for a female empowering story with a little bit of magic weaved into the story then Antique is a book you should definitely consider reading! Before reading this debut I really had no idea what to expect but deep down I had a feeling that this story would be very wonderful! Overall if you are wanting to read a story about someone reinventing themself go for it because it might be a helpful tool if you are trying to do the same thing. I really admired the main fmc Grace because no matter what she was going through she managed to pick herself up and continue on with a hobby that made her happy.

As mentioned our main character Grace who has always had a love for all things old. After her divorce she decides to move on with a job with a antiques tour show. She comes into possession of this necklace that somehow manages to boost her confidence. Within time she manages to make something of herself but she also learns that with great sucess also comes with great responsibility.

This was a great debut. I always enjoy trying a debut. You can really find some gems, and that is what I got reading this book. Magical Realism is something I enjoy very much in my reads. In this book, we have Grace, who is an antiques appraiser, and appeared on Antiques Roadshow. She's gone through some hard times, including getting divorced, and losing her career. She signs on to be on an amateur travelling antique show, and happens to come across an intriguing necklace. This necklace seems to have some magical powers to it. It enhances her appraisal talents and she begins to know exactly what things would go for, and well over their worth. I loved the stories of the families and people that she helps throughout the book. That added an emotional aspect to the story. I really enjoyed this unique look at the art and antique world, it's something I'm not too familiar with. It was definitely well written and I'm happy I read it.

So this was a well done debut novel by this author and while there was quite a lot to like, there were a few odd choices I thought that kept me from giving this book 4 stars. The story, along with some of the character development and dialog is what elevates this twilight zone episode to full length novel. Our FMC is Grace, a 46 year old antique appraiser, formerly star of the Antiques Roadshow, who has fallen on tough times after losing her father to a stroke, her husband to a younger woman, her marriage to divorce which results in a loss of identity and confidence in herself. During a field appraisal at the down strata roadshow she works with now, she ends up with a mysterious necklace that defies an ordinary description. The author includes a great description of the necklace along with the true description of it's magical provenance which was a really fascinating fantasy and I found myself wishing he had included a bit more of that story. But this is Grace's story, and right away she finds that her desire to people please is enhanced while wearing the necklace. She's able to communicate with it and together they change a few lives. Inevitably the third act conflict puts Grace at odds with the necklace. Here's where for me the story got a little screwy. The necklace breaks but somehow Grace finds it restored within her bag once again. A long lost treasure of purely sentimental value is found also seemingly without explanation, and worse of all Grace has an impossibly magical encounter which just doesn't seem earned. For me it begged the question, should Grace's value be a thing determined by others, or one she determines for herself? It was good to read a magical realism book written by a new author and I look forward to what he comes up with next.

Antique is a mesmerizing, magical story about discovering your worth and trusting yourself. This is a masterpiece! The format and pacing were intentionally crafted and engaging, making this book an easy page-turner. I especially love how each appraisal became a mystery. The way Grace, the main character, described each detail in arriving at the final number was enthralling. There were even a few fake-outs that caught me off guard. The art was described in lush prose that made me feel as if I were viewing a real painting. Seth Panitch's writing is exquisite. That is how I described this book 50% in, and that held through the end. Every character was interesting and well-developed. I, of course, rooted for Grace most, but I also loved Jerome, Patty, and Robert. The only person I wish I had learned more about was Grace's mom, Shirley. I would love to know her story but I enjoyed how she was revealed through Grace's narrative. Overall, this book moved me and made me consistently ponder the difference between worth and value. Who determines worth and how do we find it within ourselves? I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves magical realism, history, art, or antiquing.

I loved this book. This novel follows the main character, Grace, who is an antiques appraiser. She discovers an old necklace that seems to pull her towards high appraisals on items. I’m not a huge antique show person - but the RUSH that was portrayed in this book of items going to auction was perfect.

If you’re a fan of the show antiques roadshow, this book is perfect for you. I loved the character development, multiple timelines, the bits of mystery with the unknown history and origin of some of the pieces - it was very well done and flowed beautifully.

Grace Schaffer follows in the footsteps of her father who is a scholar of historical artifacts. She got her father’s attention after digging in their own backyard and finding an arrowhead as a child. As an adult she eventually landed a coveted spot on Antiques Roadshow. Her time there was too short. She loses her job, gets a divorce, and feels like she has lost her identity.

Grace accepts a job on an amateur antiques tour show. She makes friends but she has lost her confidence and fears, letting everyone down until one day she appraises a necklace.

The necklace gives her a magical ability that helps build her confidence. While wearing the necklace and appraising the items, a number pops into her head. A number much higher than she and the other appraisers think is reasonable. Somehow, each item is sold for the amount she was given. She is successful and begins to feel like a celebrity. Each of her appraisals have helped people in need and it makes her feel good about herself and her world.

While appraising a painting, she goes head-to-head with her ex-husband who is famous for art appraisals. Because he questions her appraisal, they are both brought in at the auction. One of them will be destroyed.

This is a story about doing good for both you and others and how that can conflict. It has a little magic involved so you will need to be willing to believe in something that science can’t measure.

It’s a story about what is important in life and what we can do to make the world better.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I did enjoy it and would recommend it to anyone who likes a little fantasy. I think that if you have ever watched Antiques Roadshow, you might enjoy seeing what goes on in the background knowing that one decision can often make or break someone whose counting on finding that one in a million treasure.

A huge thank you to Seth for reaching out and gifting me a copy of this book!

As someone who doesn't typically read a lot of fantasy, I absolutely loved this story. Seth’s writing flows beautifully, allowing me to easily picture the vibrant places Grace visits without crossing the line into the over-the-top, overly dense prose that usually steers me away from this genre.

(This might be a total "reader quirk" thing, but I also have to shout out the formatting as the font choice and size made this such a smooth, physically easy reading experience)

The story follows Grace, a woman at a major crossroads. Fresh off a divorce, she has also had to walk away from her beloved role on the Antiques Roadshow, where she had become a bit of a celebrity. Now facing an uncertain future on the traveling appraiser circuit, she stumbles upon a seemingly innocuous necklace. Once she puts it on, her appraisals completely change. She's no longer measuring a piece's true worth, but rather following a strange pull. Is the necklace forcing her to hunt down something far more valuable?

If you’ve ever watched Antiques Roadshow, you already know the thrill of waiting with bated breath to see if someone brought in a priceless treasure or a total dud. But what I hadn’t fully appreciated until reading this book is the appraiser's side of the equation, their own deep desire to find that elusive "Grail" piece among a lifetime of ordinary objects. That perspective made this story such a blast to explore!

Alongside Grace’s hunt for rare antiquities, we get to witness a beautiful journey of personal growth. It was so satisfying to watch her finally step out of the shadows of her genius father and husband, claiming the independence she truly deserves.

Whether you’re a seasoned thriller reader looking to widen your scope or just searching for a story about finding one's own "Grail," you’ll want to add this book to your summer TBR!

Grace is struggling with who she is and what's next for her. The divorce from her unfaithful husband has been hard, her career is also down the drain and she is also on the brink of losing this last chance she has. She has always enjoyed seeing the enjoyment that is brought to those who think they have a treasure and when Grace confirms, it's a happy ending. Lately that hasn't been the case and so when a mother and her daughter come with a book that isn't worth hardly anything, she just blurts out the most outrageous amount. What is she doing? How could she give these people such false hope, knowing they will never come close to what she quoted them. But this feeling just comes over her and she can't help it. So after this sells for her quoted price and then it happens again with another object. People are coming to see her, they want her to quote their objects and what Grace realizes that it's not about the dollar amount these items are worth, but the worth they are to that person, that family and what it really means even if it is some partly broken, dingy worthless items that's been collecting dust on a shelf for years. She realizes these objects are helping those who really need it at a time when they have no other option. I really enjoyed this novel and have always loved searching through estate sales and Goodwill stores for trinkets and items that may not mean anything to anyone, but stand out to me for some reason. Thank you to the author for the complementary novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

When I saw this book, I knew I wanted to get my hands on it. My mom was big into antiques, so it brought back such fond memories of my childhood.
Antique by Seth Panitch painted a fun world of antique appraisals. The novel follows Grace, an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow whose life gets turned upside down due to personal affairs, so she joins a traveling appraisal company to get back into the industry.

In her new position, Grace appraises an ancient necklace with a strange stone and impulsively buys it for herself. She beings to realize the stone seems to guide her appraisals, giving her insights she couldn't possibly know on her own. The touch of magical realism adds intrigue and gives the story a mystical vibe which was a huge strong point for me in this novel. As the story continues, Grace finds herself grappling with the truth about some artwork she appraises, forcing her to confront some things she has been avoiding about her past, self-worth, and the life she wants to rebuild.

This book was a fun, fast-paced read for me. The magical element was intriguing and kept me going. This was a solid three stars for me.

I really enjoyed reading Antique by Seth Panitch. It is a pleasureable escape into the world of antique buying & selling, but whats more, a reflection into deciding one's own worth. Refreshing instead of heavy and dictitorial, the book presents a likeable character, Grace, who is at a low point in life and struggling to decide her own worth. Choosing an interesting environment, ie. Antique auctions and road shows, the author pulls the reader into an exciting world and distracts with a strong, adult female lead. Readers can identify with Grace, regardless of their age and be entertained while having their own introspection. there is an element of magic which enhances the storyline and a few surprises which show Panitich's ability to deftly describe relationships.
Great book for bookclubs looking for inticing discussion and renewing old memories brought on by familiar objects.
Can't wait for his next work.

Antique
By Seth Panitch

4⭐️

Saying Antique is about as far outside my usual reading wheel house as you can get is the biggest understatement and yet, here we are. Seth has written a mixture of art, mystery, magic, and self-discovery.
Grace’s journey had me rooting for her (be a girls girl) while trying to unravel the secrets of a necklace that seemed to know more than everyone else in the room (and we love a good accessory moment, don’t we?).
It wasn’t my typical romance filled escape, but it was an engaging adventure that proved sometimes the best treasures are the books you would typically not pick up.

This was such a fresh and uplifting read. I enjoyed that it felt a bit nostalgic, bringing up memories of watching the Antiques Roadshow, yet the twist of magical realism gave it a certain sparkle and mystery.

Grace, an antiques appraiser, is having a true identity crisis after losing her job on the Antiques Roadshow and watching her marriage crumble. Until she comes across a very weathered, tarnished necklace, and upon inspecting it, she immediately feels there is something very different about this piece.

Not only did this take us on what felt like a treasure hunt, searching nooks and crannies for art and antiques, but it also offered a glimpse into the cutthroat world of art and antique auctioning.

I loved the added magical element, and watching Grace on her journey towards confidence and self-worth was heartwarming.

Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours @sethpanitch and @grandcentralpub for this gifted book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was about an antiques appraiser who gains the ability to predict the exact price that items she appraises will sell for at a future auction. The story is also about her personal life, the emotions that she goes through and her co-workers and others reactions to her special ability.

This book was imaginative and the theme very original. The characters made the story come alive with their emotions and reactions. The story line was easy to follow. I found that I would get so interested in the story, that it was difficult to put the book down. The story was very entertaining.

If you like books that take people and put them in unusual situations, you will likely want to check this one out.

I received a free advance reader copy of Antique. The opinion that I express is my own.

Lots of fascinating detail about the antique world and—quite literally—the "thrill" of the hunt. I really enjoyed how Grace moved through the increasingly rarified tiers of the auction world, from the bargain basement of the televised "roadshows" to the ethereal heights of Sotheby's. Unfortunately, the paranormal element that dominated the first half of the book was abruptly eliminated in the second, with the result that—for me—Grace's midlife search for meaning fell oddly flat. When the fantastic was restored, in the very last pages, it was just too little too late. I would have been better satisfied with either more paranormal or (conversely) none at all, just straight up women's fiction.

This is a hidden gem of book that has antiques, art, a bit of magical realism, and a really lovely story.

Grace is the main character. She is an appraiser who at one time was on Antiques Roadshow with her ex-husband. Now she is in a second rate roadshow trying to revive her family business.

Grace buys a necklace which gives her the ability to appraise items exactly for people that have items they love but they need to part with.

When she meets a young man and is led to a painting he has in his possession, it takes her on a journey of realization and authentication.

I love the redemption parts of the story. I love the backstory of Grace’s relationship with her dad. I love the way the book takes us on a meaningful journey of items and connections to its current owners.

I enjoy watching Antiques Roadshow but I did not enjoy this book about it nearly as much. There was a plot point about an antique necklace which was just dropped after a while and never resolved. The main character was obsessed with Impressionist paintings and was ridiculously melodramatic about everything art-related. Getting the right appraisal of an object's worth seemed to be a life or death matter to her. The drama queen behavior was exhausting, as was the author's over-the-top writing style. Who cares if the painting was by Kent or Davies. Not me!

Grace is failing: in her marriage (her husband left her for a younger woman), her job (she left Antique Roadshow because her husband worked there), and her life (she's been working for a failing antique assessor traveling group and the group is failing). When a woman and her daughter bring a very old necklace to be appraised, Grace is drawn to it and tells them it is worth $2500. Delighted, they offer her the necklace and that changes her world. It seems to have a life of its own and it changes her world.

Antique is a mesmerizing exploration of value, both of objects and the self. Grace Schaffer’s journey from fame and loss to rediscovering her own worth is beautifully told, with just the right mix of suspense, charm, and magical intrigue. The story captures the thrill of art, the allure of the unknown, and the courage it takes to confront one’s true self. A captivating read that lingers long after the final page.
