Texas Rangers #1

Foster Justice

Rate this book
"Intense romantic suspense with a sexy edge." --Tanya Anne Crosby

One Riot, One Ranger. . .

That's the Texas Ranger motto, but when Chad Foster's rebellious brother goes missing, it's time to put his elite training to use investigating a crime that strikes much closer to home. Turning Los Angeles inside out to retrieve Trey and save their ranch from a ruthless land grab is a no brainer, even if it puts his badge at risk. His only lead is a heart-stoppingly sensuous exotic dancer with a very tempting butterfly tattoo, the woman who helped scam his brother out of their ranch. But staying on top of this redhead's every suggestive word and sensual move means putting his case--and his heart--right in the line of fire . . .

A Texas Ranger, complete with quarter horse, is as out of place in downtown L.A. as a lawman is in the bed of a suspect, but with both their lives at risk, Chad has to put his trust in the one woman who could bring him down for good, and pray that somehow hard evidence is really just a pack of lies. . .

Caffeinated Aspects:

Brothers, swindlers, and an exotic dancer had me intrigued. When Chad Foster’s brother goes missing the Texas Ranger has no choice but to turn in his badge and head to California to find him. The plot drew me in with compelling characters.
Chad Foster is a born and bred rancher and lawman. Chad has a reputation hunting cattle thieves and uses those skills when he enters California. The man brought his horse with him, and I could not help but giggle. Chad could be charming, and the man was tenacious trying to find his brother and capture a crook.
Jasmine is so much more than an exotic dancer and the girl does not mess around. She completely upended Chad and I loved her role in the case.
Riley is a local police officer and his interactions with Foster where comical in the beginning. The banter made me laugh and I enjoyed their interaction as the case deepened.
While this is dubbed a romantic suspense, it leans heavier to the suspense side. Foster did a great job of provided clues, ramping up the tension and adding some twists to the story. The tale flowed well despite my disconnect to the romance and I enjoyed all of the character interactions. The villain was slimy and I cheered the good guys on.

Decaffeinated Aspects:

I liked Jasmine and Chad together and could see them working as a couple but some scenes and the rushed romance (in part because the action and suspense were heavier) I was never really swept up in the romance.
Jasmine used something to prove that Chad was interested in her as a woman and it just did not work for me personally. I felt in a way it degraded her. Not for the act, but because she saw it as validation he liked her. It is only one scene and the author clearly showed more sides to them as a couple but for me it fell flat.
Chad was a tad bull-headed and got himself in some mighty sticky situations while trying to solve the case and while I loved his tenacious persistence, some of it was just a bit over the top. Hotheaded and stupid are two different things.

*** I received an ARC from Kensington through NetGalley for an honest review. Expected publication date: 12/22/14 ***

A Texas Ranger, a woman working as a stripper to make her way through school, an artist, a con artist, a Beverly Hills cop and a quarter horse all walk in to a bar....I know this sounds like the start to a joke, but it’s really the start to an action packed story filled with twists and turns and a budding romance added to the mix.

While this book is pegged as a romantic suspense, I find that it was suspense side of things that I enjoyed and held my interest. The search for Chad’s brother, Trey, and unearthing all of the secrets that surrounded it were well thought out. The twists and turns gave the mystery depth and had me wanting to see what the outcome would finally be. There were a few things that I didn’t see coming and find that I appreciate the choices the author made because they made the story much more realistic for me.

The romance element didn’t get my heart racing as much as I’d have liked. I could feel the attraction between Chad and Jasmine, and enjoyed some of their more entertaining interactions, but I didn’t feel that deep seated connection. I could see it growing, but not that quickly since there were quite a few things that never really got worked out between the two.. Also, I felt that the angsty aspect of their courtship was just a tad too drawn out for my liking and couldn’t help but do the “really? seriously? face through the last stages of their romance. But while the romance side of things didn’t move me, I did like Chad and Jasmine. Chad’s determination to find his brother at any cost had my respect and being able to follow a true blue Texas Ranger around as he tried to navigate the wild world of Beverly Hills did offer up moments of levity, especially when they involved a Beverly Hills cop, that helped to give a slight break from the urgency of finding Trey. I could feel his frustration at being stonewalled in his investigation while also being frustrated with him for not bending on his preconceived notions, some were valid while others he really just needed to let go of. Jasmine, while being put in a somewhat stereotypical role of student stripping to make ends meet, had a lot of gumption and balls to help Chad in his efforts to solve the mystery of his brothers disappearance.

Texas Ranger/Rancher, Chad Foster doesn't always get along with his brother, artist, Trey, but when Trey disappears with no word in Los Angeles, CA, Chad doesn't hesitate to go to his brother's aid. The only lead Chad has is a painting of a red-headed stripper with a butterfly tattoo, named Jasmine.
So with his trusty horse in his trailer and Chad's pick-up truck, the Texas Ranger travels to the big city of L.A. in search of his brother and immediately discovers down home hospitality is not the norm in L.A, especially when continually has run-ins with a particular traffic cop who seems to enjoy making Chad's life miserable while ticketing him for minor infractions.

Once Chad begins to follow some leads, he realizes he has stepped into something far more devious than he had previously thought. His brother is in danger and so are those surrounding the entire scheme going on which is being perpetrated by the art dealer with whom Trey had some dealings with. In addition to that, Chad is thrown for a loop when he meets the very sexy and mysterious Jamine and she not only turns out to be the opposite of what he thought, but also an attractive distraction, who makes him want to claim her for always.

Foster Justice by Colleen Shannon is a fast paced mystery/suspense that leads all who dare to read, on a journey into the unknown. Jasmine is so not all she seems and when Chad comes to the realization, he becomes more intrigued by the minute. Chad is the ultimate alpha Texas Ranger. You can take the Ranger out of Texas, but you can take the Texas out of the Ranger, especially when his is out to protect his own. This well written and entertaining story, but Colleen Shannon will take you through the spectrum of emotions that will range from happiness to tears. I look forward to more from Colleen Shannon and her Texas Ranger series for she has me hooked.

Good story if you like unlikable heroes

Third generation Texas Ranger Chad Foster is a bit of a loose cannon. He'll bend the rules over backwards to pursue justice. And he'll break every one of them to save the brother he loves. However, this maverick Lone Ranger is also the most stick-up-the-butt, inflexibly moralistic, judgemental and self-righteous prig you'll ever meet between book covers. I get why his brother took off. I get why heroine Jasmine wants to hate him. I even get why she ends up falling for his disapproving snotty alpha-male BS (Daddy issues). I get it, but I don't like it. And I don't much like the death toll. And even with the HEA and the love of his good woman, I don't think this hero is heroic at all.

This has a good story line but it took a little while to get into it for me. I liked how the story had 2 red heads that had identical tattoos and Chad assumed that Jasmine was Mary, Trey's girlfriend. Once I got into the story and things really started to pick up I was hookef.

“Texas Ranger Motto: One Riot, one ranger.” All I can say is, “Look out Walker, there is a new ranger in town.” This was one rollicking story filled with action, intrigue, and betrayal.

The opening scene, not exactly what one would expect from a story about a Texas Ranger, but then again, he is tracking rustlers. “No matter how fancy their rig, likely stolen, too, Chad viewed rustlers on a par with worms and strippers: the only critters too low to fall down.” This vermin is not only rustling cattle, but his cattle. So in wild west glory Chad Foster – Texas Ranger – charges in on his trusty steed, Chester, and an “AR-15 rifle mounted with a night scope” as his only back up, averts a stampede, shoots out the horn, head lights, and tires on the eighteen wheeler, arrested them and leads them back into town (a mere 20 miles) behind his horse. All in a day’s work for this Texas Ranger. That is only the first five pages.

Now meet little brother, Trey. He has no interest in the ranch or Texas for that matter. All he wants is to paint and a fiery red head in LA. Little does he know that the guy he is selling his half of the ranch to is a sidewinder from way back. Trey just wants to get to LA and the red head. So the adventure begins.

A few weeks later, Chad follows Trey, complete with his dually pickup with horse trailer for Chester. Now imagine this rigged out cowboy in Beverly Hills. Yah! “You’d stick out in Beverly Hills like a sore-tailed cat at a rocking chair convention, anyway, and probably not get a damn thing done before you got yourself arrested.” According to his captain. It was entertaining watching Chad navigate the streets of Beverly Hills. He had barely arrived in the city before he racked up his first two tickets for “Illegal parking, no horses in the city limits.”

Chad was a fun character. Rough around the edges. Not as smooth as Walker maybe, but he “keep on comin’.” He tried, he really did, to be low profile, in control, and not rock the boat. But, these Beverly Hills cops took too long. And imagine his surprise when Chad found himself enamored with his lead witness – his brother’s girlfriend, a stripper. (See above quote.)

This story just kept getting more and more exciting and entertaining. I couldn’t put it done. Art galleries. A stripper. A gang with a green lowrider. A cop who seemed bent on harassing him. Chases through Southern California. Oh Nooooooo! Gasp! Sniff. *wiping tears* Threats. A trip back to Texas. Heart stopping action. Gasp! *sigh*

You really need to read this one for yourself. A fast paced action adventure from beginning to end, with some romance thrown in for spice.

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

There are many things that attract this gal to romance novels. When it came to Colleen Shannon's Foster Justice it began with the mere mention of Texas Rangers. Not sure what it is that intrigue me so much about them. There's just something appealing about the rugged alpha male types with cowboy hats and those amazingly tight jeans. So Foster Justice clearly made the cut.

Where to begin? Chad Foster. This is one Texas Ranger that brings sexy back. His smoking good looks just make me shiver with delight in all the right places. He's alpha male through and through ladies.

Shannon's Chad Foster is not fond of strippers which seems like a bonus for him. The only problem is the leading lady is just that...a stripper. Granted she isn't defined by that profession in her eyes. Although Chad has a difficult time seeing passed it. His interaction with the stripper with the butterfly tattoo is intriguing at best. There is tension for sure but I always wanted more to happen between these two. There were heated moment but sadly it just wasn't enough for me. It seemed as though Shannon saved the heat until the bitter end which was a waste in my opinion. The chemistry between this pair had all the makings of that hot steamy kind of love all of us ladies really want in out romance novels. But in the end I did enjoy the romance they shared and the ending was neatly wrapped up with a red hot bow.

The suspense! Shannon definitely has no problems in the suspense department. As Chad began the hunt for his missing brother the mystery and suspense revved up like you wouldn't believe. There was always something happening...a lead to follow...a chase to save a brother before it was too late. My gosh...I was always on the edge of my seat dying to know what would happen next. If you're wanting to know if Chad found his brother you'll have to read the book to find out. I just can't bring myself to ruin the mystery for anyone. I will say that I was one pissed of reader. I understand the angle that Shannon was going for but for goodness sake. Why...oh why did you have to do that? Was it necessary?

As the debut installment of the Texas Ranger series Foster Justice has a lot going for it. It's a light and exciting read with exciting characters that pull you into their story. I'm curious to see where the second installment leads and what characters will be in the spotlight. I highly recommend Foster Justice to romance readers that enjoy a little suspense with their love stories topped off with a nice hunky Texas Ranger.

Justice served, Foster-style!

This book has a unique twist of intrigue, danger and deceit which is complimented by a great cast of characters with a wide range of personalities. Chad and Trey may be brothers, but they are as different as night and day as are Jasmine and Mary, the main cast list is topped off by a straight-laced, by the book cop who seems to take great pleasure in blocking Chad at every turn...or is he?
As a Texas Ranger Chad is determined to do everything in his power to protect those he loves, even if that means protecting them from themselves. He will stop at nothing to find and rescue Trey, ripping the city apart until he finds the lead he needs.... and as soon as he see's her he is convinced Jasmine is the woman who has lured Trey here and holds his heart - a red head with a butterfly tattoo - it has to be her, doesn't it?
Mistaken identities, fraud, kidnapping, money laundering and steamy sex leads you on a twisted, dark journey, but not everyone will make it, how many victims with there be before Chad rescues Trey?
Whilst Chad and Jasmine are the main characters this book is written from multiple points of view, so you see this from Trey and Mary's view too which adds to the plot nicely.
This is book one in the series and is more than worth the 90p price tag, a price tag which it shares with book two and three too, both of which I am looking forward to reading.

Foster Justice is quite the wild ride of suspense. While this cleverly plotted out book starts of slow, things seriously pick up in all directions.

Ms. Shannon managed to weave in well placed tension, and I found myself pleasantly surprised that some of the "good guys" didn't quite make it. That aspect actually peeved me off, but on the other hand, great story telling is writing a book that engages all kinds of emotions from the reader--even the unpleasant ones.

I'd highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense books with a Texan flare.

Fast, exhilarating, sexy

A hard headed cowboy who is also a Texas Ranger leaves his home to find his missing brother in what feels like a foreign country, Los Angeles. Introduce a smart, savvy stripper working her way through law school, greedy con men, and an LA cop who just keeps running into the most ornery ranger he has ever known and you have an action packed story filled with laughs, hot lovin, and finally, justice. A great read!

This book turned out to be really good. The story starts out with excitement and never stops. It was full of action and suspense. You never knew what would happen next. I take that back, you knew Chad would get a ticket or have his truck towed. I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. He was working as hard as he could to find his brother and kept running into road blocks at every turn. Several things at the end were unexpected but it was a good ending to a good book.

I thought the over all book was ok. Jasmine with her saying she had only been intimate with 10 men, like she doesn't sleep around, thats a lot in my opinion. Then comes trotting out of her bedroom with a large box of condemns. The killing of one of the characters is unforgivable for me. No more by this author...

A Texas Ranger resigns his commission to search for his brother who has disappeared. The only clue is a stripper in LA with a butterfly tattoo. Too late he finds he is chasing the wrong person and is lead through LA with murderers on his tail. His brother is beaten to death, but its not over yet.
