Book Review: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: You Belong at the Table!
Reviewed by King Pen Gemini

I’ve lived most of my professional life being “the only.” The only Black man in the room. The only one with a seat at a table I wasn’t sure I was invited to…. at least not fully. A bachelor’s in Communication, a master’s in Creative Writing, and the founder of a publishing company… on paper, I’ve done what they said would make me “enough.” But the truth is, I’ve carried imposter syndrome like a silent chain for years. And Anthony W. Scott? He just gave me the blueprint to finally start unlocking it.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: You Belong at the Table! isn’t just a book, it’s a mirror. And for brothers like me who’ve had to over perform just to be seen as average, it’s a long overdue therapy session. This book doesn’t speak at us, it speaks for us.

Scott’s raw storytelling took me back to all the times I questioned my worth despite my work. From the early chapters where he breaks down the roots of imposter syndrome, to his own East Cleveland upbringing and legal battles that mirror my grind through predominantly white agencies and institutions, it felt like he was reading pages from my life.

What hit hardest was his acknowledgment that being a high-achiever, especially as a Black man in white spaces, doesn’t silence the inner critic. In fact, it amplifies it. I’ve published books, run a business, survived spaces where my presence alone challenged the norm, and still, I’ve felt like a fraud in rooms I had every right to be in. Reading this made me realize I’m not weak or ungrateful for feeling that way, I’m human.

Scott’s breakdown of the “Five Imposter Types” had me circling paragraphs, especially the “Perfectionist” and “Superhero.” That need to overdeliver, to be excellent just to be accepted, isn’t just pressure, it’s generational trauma. But the author doesn’t leave you in the pain. He offers tools, real ones for unlearning, reframing, and reclaiming your confidence.

More than anything, this book reminded me that survival is not the goal, but thriving is. And thriving means believing that I belong not in spite of who I am, but because of who I am.

If you’ve ever walked into a room full of people and felt like you had to shrink to be accepted… If you’ve ever second-guessed your talent after being the most prepared person there… If your story starts with struggle but you’re still showing up with brilliance, this book is your reminder: You belong.

Thank you, Anthony W. Scott, for writing this. For making space for our truth. And for reminding me that the table I keep showing up to wouldn’t be complete without me.

In Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: You Belong at the Table!, Anthony Scott presents a compelling and timely exploration of a challenge that affects many accomplished individuals imposter syndrome. Despite impressive achievements, countless professionals continue to wrestle with self-doubt and the fear of being “found out,” and this book addresses that struggle with both honesty and practical insight.

What makes this work particularly powerful is its use of interviews with a diverse range of professionals. This book really hit home. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome offers a thoughtful mix of real-life stories and practical tools that helped me feel seen and understood. I appreciated how it brought in voices from different backgrounds made it feel more inclusive and relatable.
The strategies are useful and down-to-earth, not overly "self-help-y," and I walked away with a few actionable things I’m already trying. I knocked off one star only because some parts felt a bit repetitive, but overall, it’s a powerful and affirming read. A great pick if you’ve ever felt like you're faking it, even when you’re clearly not.

It is a must read! I have been awakened, and applied the tools from this book. A power joy and a great self reflection to oneself I never knew the actions I was doing by questioning my abilities, my potential, my self worth was allowing me to settle and be comfortable in my environment, circle and surroundings without challenging myself to strive.
I have embraced challenges and the unknown. I know my worth. I will not allow my imposter dictate my destiny.
Thank you.
