Although a year younger than her sister, Mattie Nesbitt has always been considered the stronger of the two. But even she feels the weight of despair as they face an uncertain future.
Mattie has nowhere else to turn when she sees the ad for brides. Perhaps this is their way out. If she and her sister can find husbands, they won't be fated to a life of loneliness and poverty.
But in California, Mattie discovers she doesn't need a husband. She can make her own way . . . disguised as a man. So with the right clothes and a new haircut, Mattie becomes Matt.
Then Mattie meets Sam Jackson Brand. He's as untamed as the Sierra, and his tempestuousness has impassioned Mattie. Mattie knows she must tell Sam the truth. But she has his respect as a man. As a woman, will she still have it--and his love, too?
A sweet little romance, suitable for middle years. Nothing really extraordinary to set it apart from many other books, but the story was sweet and the characters had good chemistry.

Oh dear. This is the beginner's version of the classic romance plot, "woman dresses as man to do manly things in the Old West," which is endlessly popular for reasons I don't fully understand but are probably psychologically fascinating. It even has the "It's Cold And We Need To Get Warm" scene! Unfortunately, some pretty racist undertones and awful writing (hint: don't have your characters say one thing and then do the opposite immediately afterwards) doom this one to a low grade.
I remember enjoying this book when I was younger, but it could've also been because I was only in 3rd or 4th grade or something, and this is basically a "junior" romance novel meant for teenage girls, but which is reminiscent of stereotypical romance novels by Harlequin or something about lusty, but true, love with cowboys or something...
