How Life in Christ Helps Fight Sin, Guilt, and Fear
Many Christians know what it's like to feel worn down in the fight against sin. Others quietly settle into apathy, growing comfortable with the patterns they once resisted. What will free us to live a life of heartfelt obedience to Jesus Christ, pursuing him, and becoming more like him? Scripture points us to a single, liberating hope, with the power to free us for good.
Encouraging for new Christians and lifelong believers, this book explores how union with Christ offers lasting freedom and hope, both in this life and beyond the grave. Chapter by chapter, pastor and author Brad Wetherell walks listeners through key biblical passages, showing that in Christ we can marvel at the miracle of conversion, fight sin with greater confidence, and rest in the riches of God's glorious grace.
Explores Union with Revealing how it brings peace with God, power to fight sin, and freedom to pursue holiness Each chapter features a key biblical passage to illuminate the importance and value of our inseparable relationship with Jesus This concise book is perfect for new believers and seasoned saints who feel worn down in the fight against sin
Some doctrines are tragically overlooked. One of those overlooked doctrines is union with Christ. Dr. Brad Wetherell seeks to revive this precious doctrine in his book, Saved to Sin No More.
Wetherell’s definition of this critical doctrine is set forth at the beginning of his work: "Union with Christ refers to the believer’s position in Christ established at conver- sion, experienced in all of life, and enjoyed forever." This doctrine is explained in clear terms and is undergirded by the doctrines of grace.
The author highlights the central themes of our union with Christ by pointing readers to key texts in Romans 5-6. He underscores the great benefit that believers en- joy, which goes beyond mere salvation. Rather, he points to the gospel realities that focus on sanctification, Christian growth, and battling sin with a holy passion. Students of Martyn Lloyd-Jones will be pleased with pertinent citations that em- phasize our union with Christ. Wetherell reminds readers of the hope that we possess in Christ: “He has made us fruitful, pruning what is evil from our lives and producing what is good. He has guaranteed our future, promising to bring us through this life and into the glories of the life to come.”
I especially encourage new believers to carefully study the precious treasures that are explored in this book. My hope is that Saved to Sin No More will encourage Christ- centered passion to reach a crescendo in the lives of many. Soli Deo gloria!
I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.
This was rich! Concise, biblical, theological, and really edifying.
He gives a clear and concise definition of union with Christ, which is: the believer’s position in Christ, established at conversion, experienced in all of life, and enjoyed forever.”
He unpacks the implications of this doctrine, and specifically how it impacts our sanctification. It’s honest, encouraging, and pastoral.
This book is a great resource for those who have walked with the Lord for years and for new believers.
“Union with Christ refers to the believer’s position in Christ established at conversion, experienced in all of life, and enjoyed forever.”
“… a life apart from God’s authority is not freedom — it’s slavery to that tyrant called sin (John 8:34). But Christ releases us from sin’s grasp, unites us to himself, and brings us under the authority of the Father.”
This book presents a concise and powerful exploration of our union with Christ upon conversion. In 125 pages Wetherell expounds upon the sanctification of believers as we walk in the way of Jesus. Oh, how I look forward to that blessed day when my sanctification will be complete! I found this book to be edifying and encouraging. This would be a great read for those who have been Christians for years as well as those who are new believers.
Thank you, @crosswaybooks for a complimentary copy of this book! All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
A great, concise, and pastoral book on a big doctrine- Union with Christ. I love when a theological work can be written biblically, concisely, and with real life in mind!
There are so many good illustrations in this book, that I can’t wait to use. This book’s strengths are on its overall introduction/definition of union with Christ, its walking through Romans 6, and its help on how to apply union with Christ to resist sin.
“Union with Christ refers to the believers position in Christ established at conversion, experienced in all of life, and enjoyed forever.”
Having followed Kristen Wetherell for a while, I was eager to request this book on NetGalley when I saw it become available. Why are we saved? What exactly is the purpose & outcome of our salvation? What does salvation enable us to do? If you've ever found yourself wondering these thoughts or if you find yourself in a low place, this message of this book would be a well-timed read. Brad Wetherell takes the various occurrences of the phrase "in Christ" & carefully explains just how our salvation should impact our daily lives. We are not just saved to escape God's wrath, although we should be humbled & grateful for that mercy. We are saved to live in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit to bring glory to God. This book gives a very practical look at how that translates to everyday life.
This is a very short but powerful book - describing what a post-conversion life can (and should) look like. Think of it as a spiritual primer on some basic theological truths.
What makes the book so good is not that it is particularly new, but that it is profoundly clear. Brad Wetherell has been gifted with the ability to see analogies of the Christian life everywhere, and the book is full of them. It actually stirred my heart a lot to get back into teaching because that's the way I thought and taught as well. It was very impactful when I taught the Bible, and those analogies work the same way here. They are powerful and memorable.
(My favorite, in case the author is reading this, is the one about working in the same building as your old company. I will take that one with me in my own fight against sin!)
Additionally, I find a lot of the books from Crossway/ the reformed crowd to be angry and rigid - this one felt kind and gracious.
My only -.5 was the lack of emphasis on the Holy Spirit, the dunamis behind the ability to do these things. The first step is to think, to ponder identity, etc, but there is the same resurrection power that raised Christ from the dead living in us! He deserves a whole chapter in a book like this.
The audio book is read by the author and is really easy to listen to. I listened to it in one Saturday morning at the gym and cleaning my house.
If you are someone who wants to read more practical theology books, or maybe you're like me and are out of the habit of reading Christian books and want to get back into it, this is a GREAT entry ramp.
(I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.)
I love Kristen Wetherell, so I was really excited to read this book from her husband, Brad Wetherell!
The doctrine of union with Christ can be often overlooked, so I really appreciated seeing this book released. “Saved to Sin No More” is short at 125 pages but extremely rich, edifying, and powerful.
This book was such an encouragement to me! I would highly recommend this book as a resource to explain this doctrine in greater depth to new believers, and I would highly recommend this book for people who have walked with Christ for a long, long time.
If you’re looking for a biblically sound book on union with Christ, I couldn’t recommend this title to you enough!
I recently read John Mark Comer's Practicing the Way, a book that exhorts believers to be like Jesus in thought, word, and deed. While reading that book, I kept asking myself, how is it that the believer is empowered to "become like Jesus" and to "do and he did," given our fallen nature and proclivity toward sin? This question is never properly addressed in Practicing the Way, but it is helpfully and thoughtfully answered here in Saved to Sin No More by Brad Wetherell. Only through our union with Christ are we empowered to become like Christ. I'm thankful for this book.
My favorite quote from this book is: “…when God brings you into union with Christ, he will not let you out.” Amen. That has been my experience as well. Though sin and failure have at times felt like a threat to my relationship with the Lord, still He has not let me go.
I found wisdom and scriptural insight in this brief book. I especially appreciate an author who can write about sin truthfully — without condemnation. That balance is deeply needed.
For me, the ending served as the clearest reminder: we are to pursue the Person of Jesus. In our union with Christ through His shed blood, we have communion with Him. That is both our security and our joy.
“The greatest gift of union with Christ is Christ himself.”
This book stirred in me a desire for deeper communion with the One in whom we are united. Brad Wetherell made this truth real, beautiful, comforting and empowering to pursue holiness out of gratitude for what’s already been immeasurably lavished upon us.
For those wrestling with assurance, longing for renewed zeal in the fight against flesh, or wondering what the true spiritual blessings of being in Christ actually are, why they matter, and how they shape daily faith—this book is a compelling, steady anchor.
I'm torn about books like this, a perfectly pedestrian exposition of parts of Romans 5–7. Does this book introduce anything fresh or insightful? No, not really. Did it thus need to be published? Probably not. Would the church grow in leaps and bounds if everyone heard sermons like this week in and week out? Absolutely! So perhaps the book is needed after all, to remind us of the basics of sanctification.
Wetherell can be a dry writer, and yet the biblical material is a gold mine, so even with flat writing the gospel will be heard. For that we can all certainly be grateful.
Short and incredible read. I personally love diving deeper into this doctrine of our union with Christ and found that this direct application to the believer’s ongoing battle against sin was intriguing. Our union with Christ plays a significant role in our lives as believers to both provide assurance of salvation and ongoing empowerment and comfort to fight against sin. Kept thinking about this book while I wasn’t reading it which goes to show that it’s a phenomenal resource. 10/10 would recommend!
We are no longer slaves to sin! For anyone struggling with sin, temptation or seeking to grow in their walk with the Lord this is the book I would hand them. It was a short read, but every sentence was meaningful and deeply important! It makes you want to keep running to Christ and praising Him for the work He is doing in our hearts and minds through saving us from sin and Satan. "For in Christ, along with all the ransomed church of God, we are saved to sin no more." PRAISE GOD!
This book explores how union with Christ offers the believer lasting freedom from sin and hope for increased fruitfulness. Brad Wetherell invites the reader to consider our how death and new life in Christ aids us in our fight against sin, gives us confidence as we pursue godliness, and encourages us to rest in the riches of God's goodness and grace.
