'The book I’ve waited all my life for' – Kirstie Allsopp
I'm going to preface my review by saying that I love her recipe for Pure Magic - it literally saved a toilet i had that had a hard water stain. But that was from another book and several years ago. The last few years, I've had this uncomfortable reaction to so many of this authors social media posts. Getting the ingredients for her recipes isn't cheap where i live, which she emphasizes is part of the attraction, and they're not easily acquired. If i didn't have a car and the money to gas it up, i couldn't easily get citric acid or washing soda or green bleach. And i don't have the time or space or energy even to live the life she's advocating for - which made me realize that what she's really selling is a privileged lifestyle. I genuinely agree that her recipes are probably better for the environment than commercial cleaners but it's a full time job and a full paycheck to achieve that life. The language and terminology she uses implies that this life is easy for anyone and if you're not doing it, you're living life wrong. I'll keep using pure magic in my hard water area, as long as I can afford to, but this white washed, privileged life of growing my own food and keeping chickens, etc., isn't applicable to me or literally anyone else i know.
Nancy's books have changed the way we live our lives. This is another extremely useful book with new approaches and updates. I wish everyone in the world would read one of her books and make changes to benefit the Earth. Or even just look at her Instagram!
