Back in the beginning of the pandemic, when COVID broke my body and my brain, I was working really hard to keep it from breaking my spirit. So I spent A LOT of time watching Nancy Birtwhistle's IG. Nothing soothes me like a capable, competent woman who knows exactly what she's about and is working in her own focused way to make the world better. Nancy is such an inspiration to me and I don't care if that sounds silly.

HOWEVER, I have also been very intimidated to try any of her green cleaning ideas because it seems like a lot of complicated ingredients and measuring and boiling and chemistry (which I failed, twice).

But I was wrong! It's not complicated at all! Or, well, it's more accurate to say that Nancy makes it non-intimidating even though it actually is complicated. I ordered all the supplies from the beginning of the book and made all the magic cleaners in one afternoon. I also tested them out on some tricky tiles, grout, etc. and, as Nancy promised, they do work a treat! I only used like ten percent of the supplies so I'm going to get a whole lot more magic out of that initial fifty bucks.

Thank you, Nancy! :)

Not everything works despite being made up and applied exactly as instructed. Ingredients very expensive and difficult to find. Not worth the money or effort

Lots of great tips for Green cleaning. I agree we don’t need chemicals to clean our homes and I don’t think I’ve used chemical cleaners for well over a decade.

I'm going to preface my review by saying that I love her recipe for Pure Magic - it literally saved a toilet i had that had a hard water stain. But that was from another book and several years ago. The last few years, I've had this uncomfortable reaction to so many of this authors social media posts. Getting the ingredients for her recipes isn't cheap where i live, which she emphasizes is part of the attraction, and they're not easily acquired. If i didn't have a car and the money to gas it up, i couldn't easily get citric acid or washing soda or green bleach. And i don't have the time or space or energy even to live the life she's advocating for - which made me realize that what she's really selling is a privileged lifestyle. I genuinely agree that her recipes are probably better for the environment than commercial cleaners but it's a full time job and a full paycheck to achieve that life. The language and terminology she uses implies that this life is easy for anyone and if you're not doing it, you're living life wrong. I'll keep using pure magic in my hard water area, as long as I can afford to, but this white washed, privileged life of growing my own food and keeping chickens, etc., isn't applicable to me or literally anyone else i know.
