Coach Wooden, more than anything else, is a teacher. Basketball just happens to be his subject. This book outlines a pattern, a theory, a strategy, and a course for how to develop as a basketball player and as a person. It organizes and dispenses the knowledge that Coach Wooden has accumulated over a lifetime in the game of basketball. It gives the reader an understanding of the delicate balance of the simple reality of the game and the incredibly demanding effort and dedication needed to master basketball. This timeless book will help everyone who is interested in improving their life and their basketball game. This book is so well thought out, well planned, well organized, and well written that it is perfectly applicable thirty-two years after its first publication. Reading it will make you feel like a member of the team.
John Robert Wooden is a retired American basketball coach. He is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player (class of 1961) and as a coach (class of 1973). He was the first person ever enshrined in both categories; only Lenny Wilkens and Bill Sharman have since been so honored. His 10 NCAA National Championships in a 12 year period while at UCLA are unmatched by any other college basketball coach.
From the 60’s so obviously outdated information but the old head coaches still use some of the plays that were outlined in here to this day. Couldn’t be me though 🙈🙅♂️
This was my Basketball Bible. I was introduced to the book while coaching college men's basketball in Louisiana in the early 1970s. This led my foundation to coaching biddy, Aau, high school, women's college to the WNBA. Still have the book. If I were to go back to coaching basketball after 32 years, I would break Coach Wooden's out again for my primer.
A classic . . which includes Wooden's philosophy which transcends basketball . . Some of the plays and technique are outdated . . Some eminently timeless . .
