bittersweet

🎌Part 2 is a tumult of action and suspense and passion. Yet it all ends in a whisper. The climactic battle we are expecting is discussed briefly in an epilogue included in the narrative almost as an after thought.

I was one of those people who knew nothing about this famous novel when I began reading it. By its end, I was thinking Zen and Buddhist in my hours away from the lengthy novel due to how completely the story had immersed me in that mind set. I was also filled with a pervasive sense of sadness and melancholy at the loss of one of the characters whose sacrificial death is key to the denouement of the entire book.

It is an astounding work of fiction rife with betrayal and double cross as well as faith in karma and great displays of courage. Epic, I think it will be considered a classic and be included in the realm of the likes of Les Miserables, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Man in the Iron Mask etc.

💞It is also one of the great love stories in contemporary literature. Two different cultures. A refined Japanese woman and a rough but full-hearted Englishman. The love as all love becomes transcendent.

🎌I call it literature because it rises above the categories of historical fiction and adventure as many other works have done in the past.

I enjoy historical fiction because I can learn about the history of different cultures, and this book didn't fail to deliver in this regard. I found the formalities, "politenesses", and customs in this epic novel of the samurai during 1600 extremely intriguing. Unfortunately, I didn't feel an emotional connection with one of the protagonists, Lady Mariko, as I did with the other characters, John Blackthorne and Toranaga, but that's my opinion. Otherwise, I would have given this saga 5 stars. I do recommend this novel to anyone who appreciates historical fiction!

While I felt that Part 1 was an interesting balance of showing everyone learning about and adapting to each other's cultures (and learning how to manipulate that to their own advantage), this one so far has been nothing but Blackthorne being worshipped by everyone. The ladies all want that shlong - so much bigger than Asian men's, so who can blame them - and Toronaga has completely drunk the Kool-aid of White Men Know How to War Better. Blackthorne, meanwhile, is obsessing over Mariko and getting his ship back, but enjoying everything Japan's throwing at him: baths, massages, food, sake, seppuku. Because, you know, everyone in Japan just commits seppuku or gets otherwise killed over every single transgression no matter how big or small. They have no other forms of punishment, donchaknow.

Just go read Musashi. It's no less bloody, but at least it's written by an actual Japanese author who knew what he was talking about, and you can skip all this long-winded buildup to a battle that Clavell couldn't even be bothered with writing.

“Leave the problems of God to God and karma to karma. Today you're here and nothing you do will change that. Today you are alive and here and honored and blessed with good fortune. Look at this sunset, it's beautiful, neh? This sunset exists. Tomorrow does not exist. There is only now. Please look. It is so beautiful and it will never happen ever again, never, not this sunset, never in all infinity. Lose yourself in it, make yourself one with nature and do not worry about karma, yours, mine, or that of the village.”

A very very very good one! <3 I took my time to read it, without rushing it, and totally worth it!

Japonistan'a ulaşmak umuduyla, kara görmeden günlerce bilmedikleri denizlerde yol alır.

Sayanora Anjin San.

The way Clavell rolled out this entire Shōgun plot was like the mind games it contains. One might fault it for its narrative conclusion after all that painstaking buildup, or just relish that it was not as one would expect.

To me if this were a course meal it would be an all-appetizer occasion. Technically not uneventful, you still get your hunk of historical fiction fill colored by political trickeries, but it skirted my anticipated pinnacle of a face-off.

James Clavell is clearly a gifted writer. His Shogun books have taken me on a journey to far away lands where I've learned about samurai, ninja, ladies of The Willow Word, geisha, karma, daimyos and seppuku, honor and traitors. Clalvell's writing casts a spell over his readers and draws them into long and complicated tales full of so many dually named characters that it can make your head spin. His books take a commitment to read.

I enjoyed these first two books of the Shogun series. That said, I didn't love them. I attribute Clavell's art of writing as the reason that I never reached a point where I wanted to give up and put them down for good. I have to respect that when all is said and done.

I first read this book when I was in 9th grade. I remember because I think I scandalized my Spanish teacher by asking her the meanings of (what appeared to be Spanish curse) words that were used by certain sailors in the book. Ma'am, if you are reading this, please accept my apologies!

This book is largely responsible for seizing and inspiring my imagination regarding other cultures. Clavell does a fantastic job immersing the reader in 17th Century feudal Japan. I definitely profited more from a 2nd reading, forty-three years later. And I think it's worth reading yet again, but maybe ten years from now.

He's a great story-teller. Yes, his worldview and skepticism about Western religion bleeds through, as do his values about sex, killing, and death. But it could be he is just faithfully representing Japanese culture. Who knows? He does show cultural conflict and incongruities going both directions--Japanese ethnocentrism, western ethnocentrism. I found that fascinating. Also, his subtexts on leadership through the eyes of several characters was also thought-provoking.

As always, read with discernment. [By the way, I probably would not recommend this for your 14 year old.]

Picked this up out of my interest in philosophy and life in feudal japan. This book indeed does a good job in painting that picture in nice detail though some of it seems exaggerated. Some characters are very well written, I absolutely admired Toranaga and Mariko!

It wasn't as gripping as I thought it would be. I had to drag myself through some chapters. Story is slow-paced, and yet some of the major characters in play (Ishido for one) don't get enough spotlight. And the way ending is written is totally unsatisfying.

Still, overall a good experience.

I'm obsessed with these books. I will absolutely dive into Clavell's other books (Obviously I will be doing chronological), and I can't wait to finally watch the show!

I know there are inaccuracies in the books, but I also understand that a lot of it captures history well from a fiction frame. Overall the books have it all. The politics is fascinating and I was on the edge of my seat wondering how things would turn out repeatedly. I love the seeing this culture and understanding even heavy topics such as suicide and sex from different perspectives, even if I didn't always agree. This story has action and romance and is so so interesting. If you are a history fan, definitely give these books a try!

As far as characters go, there are so many but they all have their own status and allegiances which make them interesting and opens the book to a lot of political maneuvering. Toranaga himself is an incredibly fascinating character. He is neither good nor bad. I find myself rooting for him in the grand scheme of things, but never really trusting him and being constantly worried that he would turn on characters that I love. He is equal parts fair, a genius, selfish, and selfless.

I took my time with this second part and now I'm sad it's over.
