I received a copy of Rose Goodwin's debut story 'For Now and Always' and was so blown away at the ease of style and voice within it. She tells the tale of Val whose dream has always been to become part of the Queen's guard. She must undergo a transformation in order to achieve her destiny but it comes at an unknown price.
The story and anthology as a whole has echoes of D&D and traditional fantasy tropes and yet the writing within feels fresh and exciting and even if you're not a huge fantasy reader you cannot help but be drawn in from the offset.
For me Goodwin's depiction of Val and Amara's relationship is effortlessly woven through the brilliant detailing and world building. Their chemistry and the way their feelings change throughout the story is so eloquently down. Their individual positions are so different in the beginning and yet as Val becomes stronger and more powerful within herself, Amara allows for vulnerability and softness against her regal name. I am so excited to read this anthology in full and also see what is next for the amazing Rose Goodwin, definitely one to watch!

Updated since I got to read the full Anthology. There are some great stories in this anthology - other than below some of my favorites were from new to me authors - Her Fiancée's favor by Alyssa Rae Jensen, Sisters in Arms by Cassidy Percoco, For Now and Always by Rose Goodwin, The Ice Princess and the Gladiator by Gwenhyver, Di-Caffeinated by Erin Branch (need to move up Di-Curious in my library TBR list), and Make Me a Sword by Jules Revel (which I hope is a prequel to a longer novel).
I received an arc for the story The Swords Soul by Evelyn Shine in this anthology (a short story that follows our MCs from her Goldie Finalist Debut Novel The Librarian's Gargoyle) and I've got to say I loved going on another acion-packed adventure with Viola & Boudicca! The story starts with V&B fighting for their lives on what was supposed to be a pleasurable and safe portal trip, has Viola meeting a talking sword, V&B trying to save & reunite lost loves, fighting more evil all the while attempting to stay alive trying to make their own way home. Highly recommend for those who enjoyed The Librarian's Gargoyle... it could be read as a standalone (but why deprive yourself of how V&B's story started lol) *Will update once the full Anthology is released & I get hands on the rest of the included stories*

I want to thank Gewnhyver for the opportunity to read “The Princess and the Gladiator”, a story that will be included in “By Her Sword: A Sapphic Fantasy Anthology”, expected to release June 3, 2025!

“The Princess and the Gladiator” is a thoroughly enjoyable read! Set in an icy, tension-filled world, it beautifully explores themes of forced proximity, emotional growth, and the slow thawing of guarded hearts. The dynamic between the “frosty princess” and the “nonchalant gladiator” immediately grabs your attention, setting the stage for a compelling emotional journey.

The story wastes no time diving into the friction between its two leads: Acasta, the sharp-tongued princess, and Herakles, the reluctant gladiator assigned—by royal decree—to train her in combat. Neither is thrilled about the arrangement, and the result is a deliciously angsty, slow-burn journey from rivalry to romance.
“Oh, my apologies. I meant to say: don’t be such a brat, your highness.”

Gwenhyver’s writing is crisp, accessible, and full of personality. Acasta’s perspective adds wit and depth to the narrative, especially through her snarky inner monologue and begrudging fascination with Herakles.

If you’re in the mood for a short, sapphic fantasy romance packed with enemies-to-lovers tension, biting banter, and emotionally charged stakes, “The Princess and the Gladiator” is a must-read!

I absolutely loved Di-Caffinated by Erin Branch. The whole D&D thing woven into the cozy cafe setting was such a cool idea – it really sucked me right in! It's awesome to see something so imaginative set in such a familiar place.

I loved Evelyn Shine's The Sword's Soul The blend of fantasy and high-stakes action was captivating. The talking sword was a brilliant addition, and the characters were well-developed. Highly recommend!

I received an ARC copy of both stories for free, and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved Di-Caffeinated, one of the short stories in the By Her Sword Sapphic Fantasy Romance Anthology! After reading Di-Curious by Erin Branch, I was thrilled to get an up close look at Awe and Hunt! In the original, if you haven’t read it then go read it!, Awe and Hunt are D&D characters played by the MCs June and Nova. It was fun to be on the inside for Di-Caffeinated. I imagine the other stories will be just as exciting and recommend reading the anthology!

I was gifted an ARC of The Ice Princess and the Gladiator short story by Gwenhyver that is included in this anthology.

At only 68 pages it was a fast read and very refreshing. I wasn’t sure of Herakles in the main Jasyn books, but seeing her story fleshed out better here is really cool and I’d probably read more about her now. Would love to read about the adventures she talks about on her body map.
In already liked the Ice Princess after her interactions with Atalanta in the main books, but I loved delving deeper into her character.
This was a great short story and just made me want to read more Jasyn books soon.

Ehhhh

Overall, I didn’t like this anthology because many of the stories took “sword” to mean “unclear fantasy world with magic and random indiscernible plots about bad guys.

I’m not a fan of anthologies because there’s usually lot more bad stories than good ones, and that proved true once again with this book. Here’s a mini review about each story:

Ishin-denshin × Yokai:
Too much. A short story shouldn’t be immersive and it used up all my brain power on the first story, not to mention it was so random.

Make Me a Sword:
This story was confusing because the FMC kept talking about Melly, this omnipresent forest spirit that wasn’t the main character or the love interest?? But they didn’t add anything to the story?? Weird

For Now and Always:
This was the first good one. A transgirl becomes a bodyguard and protects the princess for years, but it doesn’t feel rushed. There’s even a little boss battle at the end. Chefs kiss.

Di-Caffeinated:
Very good. This short story about a DnD-esque party with amnesia going on a quest to require their memories is cute and has a happy ending.

Sisters in Arms:
This story was abruptly short, but seems sweet. It wasn’t very vivid.

Royals and Other Beasts:
Perfect!!! This story is also VERY short but it has a good structure with the peasant saving the dragon—I mean, Princess ;)—and living happily ever after.

Targeting the Heart:
This short story was the most promising but devastatingly undeveloped. WHY is the phoenix lady’s wife secret? Why are they wearing their wedding rings on necklaces and being separated and bumping into each other like strangers then being happily married for the second half?? We know why Siwani was kidnapped, but why was Malinga targeted in the first place? Combine that with an ending focused on a secondary character, and it’s just frustrating.

Kindness:
This one is simple and clear. I like it. Bonus points for super cute ending <3

Her Fiancée's Favor:
This story is way too long for what it is and is very muddy. They’re in a cave for most of it?? I have a VERY vivid imagination, but give me SOMETHING to work with. What country is this in? What kingdom? Who’s the princess of what and is the dead sister alive or is she the dragon? Is the Crimson Spector a pen name for love letters or a wraith-shifting power? Don’t like.

The Sword’s Soul:
Too much for a short story. After reading the About The Author section, I realized it’s the author of The Librarian’s Gargoyle, which is on my TBR. This short story feels like a DnD side quest on steroids with what I can only assume are the main characters from that book. I wish it was dumbed down for an anthology bc the world building takes up ten of twenty pages.

The Heart is an Inferno:
10/10. An exemplary short story. 17 pages of minimal description, maximum action, and a whirlwind of character development. it’s only one scene, which makes it super clear and vivid. The plot is the two main character’s past and their resolutions of it, making the story even more to the point while weaving in an all too familiar dysfunction of family.

My only problem is that it’s written so badly. Every other word is some variation of the word “dragon”. There’s magic, but also space stations?? The writing is wack af but the plot and pacing and characters are magnificent. I also noticed it is by an author who I have an unread special edition book by rainbowcrate from. Coolio.

Make Me a Sword by Jules Revel features a fae, a vampire, and a half-fae, half-human sword-wielding woman. It is written with detailed descriptions and rich world-building, resulting in an engaging story. I love the writing style. I love the plot. I want to give it 5 stars, but I don't feel like it's a complete story on its own. There are many questions left unanswered. This feels more like a snippet of a much larger narrative that I really want to read.

Ishen Denshin x Yokai by Aoibh Wood has lovely setting descriptions. I really enjoyed the glimpse into the different cultures. This short story felt complete, and I found the ending satisfying. Two demon hunters from different worlds connect over their shared enemy and shared losses. It was immersive, sad, and hopeful. I am giving this one 3 stars.

Oh my! The Ice Princess and the Gladiator by Gwenhyver is absolutely delightful! It's flirty, witty, sexy, steamy, and there is some action (more than one kind *wink*). A literal ice queen and a smug (but caring) gladiator misjudge one other and find so much more while self-defense training when their defenses go down. For me, this short story is an easy 5 stars. I am also excited to know that there is more to come for Herakles and Acasta!

The Sword's Soul by Evelyn Shine is such an exciting adventure! This one begins right in the middle of the action. Viola and Boudicca are lost in the bōc-hord being chased by hungry manticores. They happen upon a sword with a soul imprisoned within. Having read The Librarian's Gargoyle, I found this to be an accessible extension of that novel. I think it would still be enjoyable without having read it, but much more so with her previous world-building. Evelyn Shine is so creative. I absolutely love the originality of Roya and Arezou's story. I am giving this one 5 stars.

Di-Caffeinated by Erin Branch is a fun and imaginative story. It is a follow-up to Di-Curious by Erin Branch. I have not read that one yet but still enjoyed this short. The two main characters have lost their memories, and we learn along with them who they are and how they know one another. As short as it is, it successfully conveys a complete tale. I like the writing style, enjoyed the lighthearted plot, and was happy with the ending. I am looking forward to reading more by this author. I give this one 5 stars.

This sampling of the anthology leads me to believe that By Her Sword is overall a 5-star read. I recommend!
I received these free ARCs from the authors. This is my honest opinion.

“Amara was the first person to see me as I truly am. She was the first person to accept me and enjoy my presence. Even before my arrival to the castle, I had no one. But now, apparently I had a friend in Amara.”

Excerpt From
For Now and Always
Rose Goodwin

I was given an ARC of the short story For Now And Always by Rose Godwin, and I really enjoyed it. It’s the story of a girl called Val who really wants to be a member of the The Queens Guard when she grows up, but she needs a little help to make that wish come true. Magical help. On her way to find a wizard who grants wishes, Val actually finds a witch who offers to turn her body into a girl (Val was born a boy, but deep down knows they’re actually a girl), and the witch says not to worry about the price, she will find Val later for payment. Val of course makes the deal, who wouldn’t want to have the body that fits them, and they can also now tryout for The Queens Guard who only allows women. Val wakes up changed. Her voice, her body, all now fitting how she has always felt. Val also realizes that she is in a strange bedroom with Princess Amara heir to the throne. She was found unconscious in the woods, and brought to the castle. The two of them are close in age and they become close friends. Val is even allowed to start training to join the guard.

I really like the use of time jumps in this story. They are used really well, and you don’t feel like you’re missing things. It keeps the pace of the story really fast. Seriously, I read this in one go! Of course Val will make the guard, and of course the witch will turn up to collect her payment. But things won’t happen how you necessarily expect them to, and that’s another thing I really enjoyed about this story. It keeps you guessing, and therefore really holds your attention.

There’s sword fighting, actions and adventure, death, a wicked witch, and an absolutely beautiful romance that runs throughout the story. I definitely want to read more stories by this author, and I recommend For Now And Always.

"Kindness," by Susanne Salehi, one of the stories in By Her Sword, made me happier by its end than I was when I started reading. The paragraph below contains both my opinions and my take on the story set-up, but shouldn't be spoiler-y. That said, if you want to go in without knowing said set-up, I can tell you that this work is well worth the read.

Susanne Salehi wove glowing romantic tension through "Kindness,” all balanced against an edge of danger. The main character, Leyr, struggles to ignore the intensity of her connection to myth-level-badass swordswoman, Meridian (the tension between these characters is beautifully written, with internal angst and self-denial balanced against action and banter). Unfortunately, the Mage Guild, a powerful organization that raised (and continues to terrify) Leyr, has sent her to track Meridian down and steal the cursed sword that is Meridian's livelihood. Leyr can totally do this, except she’s *very bad* at lying to herself, and not great at lying to anyone else, either. When Leyr finds Meridian, the attraction between herself and the swordswoman hasn’t diminished... nor has the Mage Guild’s intent that Leyr complete her mission.

Like its protagonist, “Kindness” has unique heart, and merits every star.

I had the pleasure of reading “Di-Caffeinated” by Erin Branch and “The Sword's Soul” by Evelyn Shine; two of the short stories included in the anthology “By Her Sword: Sapphic Fantasy Romance”.

“Di-Caffeinated” stands out for its witty tone and dynamic action, captivating, lovable MCs and has the perfect touch of spiciness. The story is related to Di-Curious: A Sapphic Tabletop RPG Romance by E. Branch and I can definitely say that it drew me to read Di-Curious as well.

The second short story “The Sword's Soul” completely captivated me with its magic, the MCs combine strength and tenderness in a unique way, the action is dynamic and immerses you completely in the tension of the events. “The Librarian's Gargoyle” by Evelyn Shine from the “Stone Awakenings” series is related to the second short story and definitely makes it to my reading list.

Both authors are talented storytellers, able to intrigue the reader from the first sentence; I have no doubt that the anthology “By Her Sword” is also a wonderful read. They get my 5 stars.

Thanks to the authors for providing ARCs in exchange for an honest review.

4 stars. I got an ARC of ‘The Princess and the Gladiator’ by Gwenhyver so thank you to the author! This was such a fun story. I love a good enemies to lovers and let me tell you the tension between Princess Acasta and Herakles, the gladiator tasked to train her. The dialogue was sharp and quick witted and the sexual tension between them was just leaping off of the page with every barb they exchanged. I liked both characters a lot and thought they were both interesting. The build up of their relationship was great and I was so happy to see that the author plans on giving these two a full length novel! I can’t wait because this was so good.

Looking forward to reading the rest of this anthology once it's released.

After enjoying The Librarian's Gargoyle so much, I was excited to see what Boudicca and Viola were up to now in Evelyn Shine's short story The Sword's Soul. I was completely engaged with this story. Although it's not lengthy, it's packed with action and adventure and introduces new characters who are worthy of their own story. If you read The Librarian's Gargoyle, you shouldn't miss this one.

Di-Caffeinated by Erin Branch is a fun story set in the world of D&D showcasing Awe and Hunt, the D&D characters of June and Nova from Di-Curious. It was nice to go on the adventure and see how Awe and Hunt interact with one another and the various characters they encounter. It's a well written, engaging story with humor. If you've read Di-Curious, this is worthy of a read.

Kindness sits among the pages of “by Her Sword”—an anthology I cannot wait to fully devour. Salehi masterfully crafts a well-layered plot that feels anything but short — every page is rich with tension, emotion, and wonder. From the very first sentence, you’re pulled into a world where magic hums beneath the surface, and desire lingers like smoke in the air.

The characters are as intriguing as they are unforgettable. Each one feels fully realized, with motivations and vulnerabilities that make their connection all the more electric. And let’s talk about the spice — the author nails that perfect balance: sensual without ever overshadowing the emotional depth. It’s swoony, it’s steamy, and it’s laced with a tenderness that lingers long after the last page.

This story is a shining example of how powerful a well-told sapphic tale can be — enchanting, romantic, and deliciously magical. I’ll be thinking about these characters (and that ending!) for a long time.

Kindness by Susanne Salehi is unique in its clarity of voice, the depth and breadth of its universe, and it’s overall quick wittedness. Lovable and loving, it will strike a chord with anyone who loves fantasy, adventure, mystery, love and life itself. The author excels at keeping their readers laughing while rooting for Leyr and Meridian both - a testament to Salehi’s strength as a storyteller. We fall easily and often with both protagonists, though it’s clear Leyr’s perspective is relatable and revenant (yes, like the 1999 video game though Leyr is more likable than Locke D'Averam in my opinion). Salehi reveals the plot, the characters’ complexities, and the awesome arch of this fantastical tale so deftly that Kindness will undoubtably leave you wanting more. Maybe Salehi is a generation-defining voice?

The short story Di-Caffeinated by Erin Branch was a very cute D&D in-game followup to Di-Curious, explaining what happened to Awe and Hunt after they were post-resurrection and a fun quest to steal back the lute that may contain their missing memories. My favorite part was the Douche Bag, a magical object for ditching jerks. Since much of the story takes place in a café and the stakes are fairly low, there’s a cozy Legends & Lattes vibe to it, but with a touch more flirting. While I’m already familiar with Awe and Hunt, I think it should be easy enough to follow for people who haven’t read the Di-Curious.

I’d love a follow up story about June and Nova, too.

I received an advanced copy from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving this review.

Wanted to love this for the sake of sapphic fantasy but felt that the final story was the only one even decently written.
Tons of modern turns of phrase and slang regardless of the often medieval settings. Almost every character in every story saying "fuck" as if that alone makes the writing mature. Glorified D&D fanfics, shoehorned tropes, and sex scenes that kept feeling obligatory instead of earned or emotional. Does every single story need to be a woman having beef with another woman but thinking in her head instantly how hot she is but "I shouldn't be noticing that about her!"
I'm a lover of fanfiction so I avoid using it as a derogatory term but man, this is what people are talking about when they do.

Sword lesbians assemble! This anthology spans galaxies and planets and follows sapphic romances, from new loves to tried and true sword wives. I appreciated how this anthology covered a wide range of relationships, including ex-lovers finding their footing once more in the face of an enraged dragon to women recovering from heavy loss and finding solace in each others’ arms. I especially enjoyed that, even though the tension is sizzling high (in more ways than one), all the stories have a happy ending. This anthology also features new writers alongside veterans, which was really cool! My personal favorites were Kindness, Di-Caffeinated, and The Heart is an Inferno.

Thank you Susanne for sending me a copy!

I got an ARC of ‘The Swords Soul / By Her Sword’ by Evely Shine. Thank you so much for the ARC!

The adventure of our beloved Boudicca and her Viola, who is learning to be a mage but isn't quite ready yet, is adventurous, dangerous, and uncertain.
Things get dicey, and the two lovers encounter strange, astonishing, and very dangerous creatures.
They search for their way back from portal to portal.
This is short, but very exciting.
I'm rooting for them both and love seeing them again.
Their story is one of the coolest and most beautiful romantic fantasy stories I know.
I enjoyed it very much!

I can't say enough about Selina Rossman's writing in Royals and Other Beasts. It was daring. It was exciting. It was everything everything I could ever have fantasized about and here it is in a wonderful collection of sapphic-based romance and fantasy. It really itches the scratch when it comes to seeing women in power at odds with each other and I was blown away by the twist. Definitely worth the read 10 out of 10. Can't wait to see what else this writer has to offer. I'm definitely checking out her other literature, the Howling Sirens series. I've already started it and I got to say an amazing read for those of us who love things that go bump in the night

Exquisite. Kindness by Susanne Salehi is gorgeously crafted. Salehi immediately brings you into the world of the protagonist, Leyr--breathtakingly beautiful gardens, ancient baths, filthy forests--and into Leyr's heart as it aches for authentic connection. While this genre is not one that I typically read, I instantly felt at home with the universal themes of conflict between duty and desire, belonging, discernment of personal strength, and our failed attempts at quieting the inner voice of self-doubt. And, the setting, while unfamiliar, was beautiful--auras, mages, sigils, and more. Salehi has created fantasy's newest fan. I cannot wait to read more of their work.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of the story "Kindness" by Susanne Salehi from the upcoming anthology By Her Sword. What a delight! Protagonist Leyr is a charmingly awkward mage tracking down the powerful swordswoman Meridian to steal her magical sword. The story is funny, sexy, and an overall fun read. The evolution of their relationship as Leyre begins to understand the truth about her mission is surprisingly tender. This is exactly the kind of escapist/aspiration fantasy I need in my life right now!

I received the ARC 'The Swords Soul' by Evelyn Shine, which is part of this anthology. It follows our two FMCs, Viola and Boudicca from 'The Librarians Gargoyle'.

This short story is action packed and jumps straight in from the first page. Viola and Boudicca are fighting for their lives - they seek refuge in a study where Viola finds a sword that starts to speak to her - i won't elaborate any further as i dont want to spoil it for you!

A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ sapphic romantasy perfect for those who have already read The Librarians Gargoyle.

I read the story of The Ice Princess and the Gladiator by Gwenhyver and it was so good.

It may have been short but the characters were fun and sarcastic and badass, exactly what I wanted from this story. The changing of the old Greek mythology names to use as female took me a second to get my head around but the story was great and I can't wait to read the rest in this anthology.

Also really want to read the next part of the Acasta and Herakles tale which I know is coming out.

"Targeting the Heart" by Erin Casey is an exciting blend of lyrical prose, fierce emotions, and razor-sharp battles. There were a few moments where the POVs bled into each other, which created some confusion in how some of the scenes were presented. Otherwise, the chemistry between the bard and the mercenary makes for a well-balanced and captivating pair, capturing realistic emotions between moments of tension and tenderness.

Grab your copy, Selina Rossman has done it again, only better. It has been an anxious few months waiting but she certainly made the wait worthwhile. Action packed from the first sentence she pulls you in with detailed descriptions that paint vivid scenes flowing through your mind. Fast paced the time flies as the pages turn leaving the reader engulfed in her written world that delivers once again, yet leaves the reader wanting more. I cannot wait for the next one -

Thank you, Evelyn Shine and Erin Branch for the ARCs!

The Swords Soul by Evelyn Shine:
This was a lovely novella about Viola and Boudicca. They go on a little adventure where Viola learns a bit more magic and they learn about another world. I'm interested to see if Arezou and Roya come back in other books.

Di-Caffeinated by Erin Branch:
Another lovely novella, this one about Awe and Hunt. I loved seeing these two again and thought the memory loss trope was well handled.

I read Targeting the Heart by Erin Casey, and Oh. My. Goodness.

It was steamy. It was fun. I was completely immersed in a bad-ass fantasy world.

It was kind of like an episode of the Witcher but way better because this one is about sexy fantasy lesbians with layered character, amazing defensive skills and the exact right amount of 😘.

Can’t wait to read the rest of the anthology!

Ishin-Denshin x Yokai is a great story by Aoibh Wood. The MC is an Arab woman traveling Japan to kill a Jinn. She is a tragic and miserable person but it all makes sense. Thanks to an intervention from another warrior, there is a happy ending. Really engrossing prose. I felt this woman's pain and rejoiced when she found a moment of happiness. Really worth the read!
