1812. Aristocrat Lady Cressida Nightingale has spent years following the drum in Spain, in the heat of battle of the Peninsular War. Secretly, she has spent much of her time spying for the government, but now she has been caught behind enemy lines by her estranged husband, Lord Greville, an officer in the Rifles - the man she has been pointedly avoiding since the collapse of her high society marriage in a flurry of scandal.

Arrested as a traitor, and brought back home in disgrace, Cressida has been betrayed by those who have made use of the information she has supplied. The only way she can save her skin is by taking on a another delicate mission - entrapping her friend Lord Byron, who is suspected of treasonous acts on British soil...

I am a big fan of Katy Moran's writing, having loved her Lamorna Family trilogy, and could not wait to get stuck into The Nightingale Dilemma for more of her gorgeous settings, compelling characters, and slow-burn story-telling rich with luscious detail of time and place.

This stand-alone novel is told from the perspectives of rebellious Cressida and her estranged husband Greville. Driving the story, Cressida's fight for survival gets her into a number of sticky situations that keep you firmly on your satin-slippered toes as she is required to reconcile with family and friends post-scandalous exit from the haut ton, and fight her way out of danger, not to mention negotiate a relationship with Greville that veers wildly between fiery sexual attraction and seething hate. Meanwhile, Greville has to wade through pretty much the same level of family difficulties, scandal, and attempts to decide out how he feels about seeing Cressida again too.

There is a fair amount of backstory to take-on-board about complicated family situations on both sides; their short tempestuous marriage; political unrest; and significant moments from the war, before you can understand quite what is happening in the book - but hold onto your fine-linen shifts and tattered shakos, because all this detail pays absolute dividends once the action really gets going in Scotland. It does help if you know a little about the Peninsular War before embarking on the story as this has major bearing on Cressida and Greville's motives and relationship.

Lush plotlines revolve around political scheming, rebellion, betrayal, blackmail, smuggling, slavery, and the gulf between rich and poor, which show off Moran's skill when it comes to filling out her books with historical context and rich social history, and she also knows how to weave in romantic suspense and red-hot passion to stir your emotions. The resulting novel sits nicely somewhere between Bernard Cornwell's excellent Sharpe series (with a lovely nod to the green-jacketed Rifles through swoon-worthy Greville), Regency society yarn, and atmospheric Du Maurier mystery, which makes for a delicious combination. The inclusion of mad, bad, and dangerous Lord Byron also makes for a lot of salacious fun, and touches on aspects of sexuality in Regency Britain that are quite thought provoking.

Just my kind of spellbinding historical adventure, with a love story between Cressida and Greville that is enemies-to-lovers gold. Another winner from Katy Moran!

Set in Regency England the book opens with Cressida Nightingale breaking into the home of the secretary for state, Lord Liverpool, being discovered by a footman and then walking into a rooms where Lord Byron is in a compromising position with Lady Caroline Lamb. And that’s just the first few pages!

Briefly, Cressida had been married to Lord Greville Nightingale for a short time when she is seduced by the Duke of Cleveland. Their marriage over, and Cressida ignored by high society, in 1812 she eventually fled abroad to the peninsula war. Cressida has been spying for England but she is caught behind enemy lines, by Lord Greville, of all people! With no support from her spymasters she has no option but to accept the offer made to her; to entrap both a childhood friend believed to be guilty of treason, Lord Byron and also her father.

This historical novel is fictional (yes novel is the clue) but with a lot of factual people and events included, from the assassination of PM Spencer Percival to the scandalous life of Lord Byron. Cressida is a feisty character who seems to have few scruples in how she lives her life, albeit much of her life was a result of her treatment by men and her determination to survive. An interesting book with good social and political reference and an underlying love story. Entertaining read. 3.5⭐️

HISTORICAL FICTION | PAPERBACK

There was so much about this book I enjoyed from the courageous and unconventional Cressida to the historical detail of the period. A work of fiction but Moran captures the era exceedingly well and there were nods to real people and events.

Set in 1812 Cressida Nightingale is arrested in France by her estranged husband and his superior during the napoleonic wars. As the story unfolds we learn much about their marriage, why it fell apart and how they both have to pretend to reunite not just to save their reputations but their lives. There are quite a few sub plots, conceals and reveals with plenty of high drama and adventure.

My only complaint which prevents me from giving it five stars is that the story jumped about a bit too much and I became confused but once you accept that’s how the book is written and go with the flow it all makes sense.

Early 1800’s London - Cressida Nightingale is a fugitive on the run and London is on the cusp of revolution following the assassination of the Prime Minister. From the ruins of a Spanish town, to the unsettled streets of London, to the wild granite cliffs of Northern Scotland this book takes Cressida on a journey with the few people she can trust. Who will she betray to survive or will she be betrayed herself by those closest to her? With 19th century attitudes towards women and wives making me angry it took me a while to get into this book due to the numerous characters. Once I did I enjoyed it but I did need to concentrate! That said, it kept me engaged, I loved the colour of the cover and liked the twists and turns of the plot. Whilst a fiction novel, this is clearly a well researched book.

The Nightingale Dilemma is full of suspense, emotion and twists and turns, all wrapped up in a wonderful early 1800's London setting.

I must say, it's definitely not my usual type of read, but i'm so glad I gave it a go, as I really did throughly enjoy it. I also think it's important for authors to have the perspective of readers who are not necessarily their target audience, so I try to read outside of my comfort zone as often as I can.

It's a story of class systems, from the lowly servants, to the glamorous upper-class.

But it's main theme is Romance, love and complex emotions, with a great cast of characters that are believable and feel real, and a descriptive storyline that'll hold your attention to the very end.

This was such a beautifully written novel. Historical novel fans will love it. The author's writing draws you in and makes you forget that you are reading. I loved how the author blends history with a gripping storyline, a touch of romance and a great cast of characters. I hadn't read anything by the author before and I will definitely be reading more by them. Overall, a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers.

The author’s signature different twist on history and characters makes for an intriguing read . As usual, the men hold all the playing cards. Greville’s broken marriage to Cressida is told in retrospect whilst their fuelled reunion plays out in Scotland in a dark mix of political intrigue, social posturing, sex, treachery and revenge.

It’s 1812 and Cressida Nightingale is a spy who has just been caught by her estranged husband Lord Greville Nightingale. She is given a choice. Choose between her freedom or that of her childhood friend Lord Byron.

This was definitely a whirlwind of a book. From the start the reader is dropped into Cressida’s chaotic world as a spy where she is on the run. As soon as I started to read I felt like I was with Cressida and on her journey. The twist in the story is that Cressida is apprehended by none other than her estranged husband Lord Greville who she never thought she'd see again. She is faced with an ultimatum and it’s not an easy choice to decide which way to turn because she could either destroy her life or Lord Byron’s.

I really liked Cressida. She certainly made a lasting impression on me because when we first meet her she is climbing on a vine onto a balcony and breaking into a house while being chased by soldiers. Cressida is very different from other characters that I've read from the same period of time. She is determined, confident, feisty and she’s brilliant at being a spy. When she is caught and presented with a choice, it also means that she will be working with Greville. Cressida and Greville may not see eye to eye but they do share similar thoughts on the plan to entrap Lord Byron and pretending to reconcile to complete the task. To say they’re less than enthusiastic about the plan would be an understatement.

There was definitely chemistry between Cressida and Greville. They may dislike each other but there was something between them. They still care for each other. They try to keep each other at arms length but are drawn to each other. I mean Greville does take a bullet for Cressida which showed how protective he is over her.

What I liked about the story is that it isn’t just a historical romance. There is also mystery, intrigue and espionage.
