This is my fourth book on my journey of learning about the history of Mexico. Coe provides a detailed overview of the history of Mexico from the Archaic to Post-Classic period. I loved the outline of this book and thought it was far easier to read than The Maya. The textbook style can be a bit much. I recommended reading this as a guide to other books rather than straight through like I did. My next book will be the conquest as told through the eyes of the Spanish.
This is one of the better books I’ve read revolving the history and culture of Mesoamerica. This text heavily weighed in archaeological evidence in partnership with historical records and accounts. It’s written in a manner that’s engaging and it addresses common misconceptions as well as the long-standing exaggerated and partially fabricated history of the Aztecs. The writings, maps, diagrams, artifacts, and evidence presented also practice cultural relativism well.
