In this companion volume to his classic ' Chess Essential Knowledge ,' Grandmaster Averbakh takes the reader through the various steps to success in the middlegame. He explains the tactical skills and positional strategies that every chessplayer needs to master. Topics covered include coordinating the pieces, attack and defence, combinations and sacrifices, and much more. Yuri Averbakh is a former Soviet champion and world championship candidate. He is also the author of the five-volume treatise 'C omprehensive Chess Endings ' (also translated by Ken Neat) and the perennially popular 'Chess Essential Knowledge .'
Yuri Lvovich Averbakh (Russian: Ю́рий Льво́вич Аверба́х; born February 8, 1922) is a Russian chess player and author. He is the oldest living chess grandmaster. He was chairman of the USSR Chess Federation from 1973 to 1978.
A compact explanation, illustrating and defining of elements of the chess Middlegame. I own the Cardogan edition. Averbakh is a long time major player and involved in the Fischer Spasky match . This book is deeply rooted in the Soviet School of Chess.
The title is a bit silly (an attempt to tie it in with his endgame primer, even though the subjects are rather different). And all the jargon and divisions of tactical motifs seem rather pointless. However, it has a lot of very nice examples and as such will doubtless serve as a trenchant introduction to the real heart of the game.
