His Undoing

Rate this book
When Mike found out he would be sharing a dorm with a former football star, he was terrified. He'd been bullied by jocks all his life for being scrawny and weak and didn't have high expectations of how it would go. To his surprise, Brett was a great guy that was easy to get along with and seemed to enjoy his company. When Mike learned that Brett was gay, it was a shock but it also explained the threatening letters that Mike had been receiving. Was Mike really at risk because of a jealous ex? Was there even anything to be jealous of?

I’m not a big fan of GFY stories, but I really liked how this one was handled.

This wasn’t a straight boy turns gay over night story, but more a slow intro into Mike’s growing feelings for Brett.

I really enjoyed the emotional side to this story. Hearing Mikes thoughts on his confusing feelings worked well, and gave this story an edge that most GFY stories that I’ve read lacked IMO.

I did feel a bit let down with the stalker side to this story. It was a bit to quick and a bit to neatly solved for me, but I guess that’s to be expected in a short fic.

I really liked how

The scene with Maggie, while it needed to be shown for Mikes thoughts, I could of done with less details lol.

Overall an enjoyable story but should maybe contain a warning for those that don’t like Lady bits in their M/M reading, lol.

Given to me free by the author with no expectations of a review of any kind lol

So you know when you give a poor review to a short story saying that it's not developed enough, and people gripe "well it's a short, what do you expect?" Well, THIS IS WHAT I EXPECT! Love and lust, adorable moments of longing and steamy moments of hot man sex. Is that so much to ask?! Obviously not, because Ms. Grace pulled it off immaculately. There's not much else to say, this was just a wonderful romance with two fully developed main characters, one moderately developed side character (thank you for keeping it simple), and one psycho ex for some drama. Oh, and the steamy sex. CANNOT forget the steamy sex.

I recieved a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Mike is a college student who has been assigned to a dorm with a jock as his roommate. Mike has been bullied most of his life because it was assumed that he was gay.... he's not. He's nervous about meeting the roommate, Brett, because he fears that it will be more of what he experienced in the past with other jocks. It turns out that Brett is a nice guy and he is gay though that fact is not well known. A friendship quickly develops between the two young men. As the friendship develops, Mike begins receiving anonymous, threatening emails warning him away from Brett. Assuming they are a joke, he brushes them off and doesn't tell anyone about them.... until something happens where Mike has no choice but to come forward with information about them. Afterwards, Mike begins dating a girl that Brett introduced him to. This leads to a sexual experience (that was pretty graphically described) between Mike and the girl. Later, Mike realizes that who he wants is Brett... not the girl.

I had every intention of adding a quick rating on here and not reviewing this book at all. It was not a bad story. In fact, it was going pretty well even if I normally have zero interest in seeing m/f situations in my m/m books. Then something happened. When this occurred (listed in the below spoiler) my rating dropped and I knew I would not simply be marking this as read and moving on. My apologies to the author but this particular thing (as well as a couple of others) bugged me. I am sure others will enjoy this story. I have to say, however, that it was not for me.

In all seriousness, OMG I LOVE THIS STORY!

Crisp clean and adorably personable. Generally I have no patience for coming of age, YA type characters. They annoy me. Ha! But I was enchanted! Mike tells the most delightful rendition of "My first time", ever.
Both first times actually. In fact the boy/girl scene was one of the most honest things I've ever read, and his first boy/boy kiss? My heart burst into flames.

The perfect short story, didn't lose itself in the details.
Sweet, funny, sexy. Recommend!

First off, I love the cover! This was perfect for what it was intended to be. A sweet short story about young love. The characters were likable and were good together. It was nice that they had "normal" names. That sounds strange, but with authors coming up with stranger and stranger names or just using Chase, Tyler, Cam etc. all the time, it was good to meet a Mike and Brett! I am looking forward to a full-lenght novel from Ms. Grace. hint, hint!

Gay for you, such a difficult thing to make real and get right. His Undoing? Well, Ms. Grace got it right. Told in first person POV, the voice of Mike is a little unsure of himself, self-deprecating and introspective at times. Oh, and confused too! Mike has a new roommate, a big, bad jock type named Brett. The fact that Brett turns out to be a decent, caring friend just makes Mike all the more confused.

Brett and Mike become friends and we get to listen to Mike’s thoughts as he discovers maybe he’s not as straight as he thinks. Sometimes he is so adorable, like when he is once again being self conscious about his body and believes Brett just called him a “twinkie”. So cute, so clueless.

The story lost a little bit for me with the attack. I could totally see Mike believing the email warnings to be a joke or a scam but once the attack happens, it is all taken seriously. I liked how much care Brett took with Mike and how upsetting it was when Brett found out why Mike was attacked. I loved the care Brett took with Mike. Mike was seriously hurt and his fear and Brett’s anger came through well. He wants to hurt whoever hurt Mike. So far, so good. But then when the identity of the attacker comes to light, I found Brett’s actions inconsistent with how he had been up to this point and I completely thought this was out of character (and damn insulting to Mike, as well).

It should be noted that Mike has been, up to this point, virginal and straight-thinking. His good friend Maggie gets to take his virginity, so if you are very down on m/f in your stories, you may not like that (but really, it’s a pretty quick scene, promise!) I’d rather boys do boys in my books but here I think it was necessary to show Mike, yes, that’s not really it.

Mike’s fear of showing his “shriveledness. Damn cold water!” in front of Brett made me smile. And Brett, the one-off man, admits that Mike will be his first boyfriend? Big smile.

The ending is a little cut off and abrupt, I’d have liked to hear the conversation with Maggie (loved that girl). This is a sweet and lovely story that more than once made me say “awww”. This is my first time reading work by Aria Grace and I’m glad I did.

Mike, the narrator of this story is more science than sports and so to find it his new roommate at college is Brett a big jock was a little worrisome.
But soon a friendship develops between the two .
Mike is a virgin and all around unexperienced but with a little help and push from Brett he finds a girl, Maggie, but he also starts having more and more thoughts about Brett.
There is a stalker who turns violent towards Mike and that moved Brett and Mike''s friendship along as Brett is a sweetie and plays Florence Nightingale.
I do have to say I was unhappy with the resolution of the stalker part of the story, I realize it's a short, so it needs to be tied up quickly, but I didn't like it, but it probably won't bug others as much.
After a uninspiring sexual encounter with his girlfriend Mike knows it's Brett he wants and not Maggie.
It's a cute story and I enjoyed it, despite my small niggle, I liked that Maggie was cool and not portrayed as many females are in m/m as bitchy, vindictive homophobes, I liked that it was mixed up a bit and the jock was the more secure and aware one, all in all a good story.

Small warning a short amount of on page m/f with Mike and Maggie.

Now this one I liked much better than the last few I read.
Mike and Brett were adorable. The natural progression of their relationship starting out as new roommates, becoming good friends, their growing attraction, (one just learning about where his sexual attractions lie) and then finally confronting each other about it and acting on those feelings... It was sweet!
The only thing I didn't like is how the attacker is dealt with when they finally find out who it is.
Overall, a very good short...again, especially for free. :)

I got this for free from the author, but after reading it I have to say I would have gladly paid for this book. It was a wonderful read, exactly what I like in a story, even the m/f scene wasn't a problem for me. What resulted in the missing half star? For me the end was too rushed. This is another book for my comfort reads and I will definitely read more by Ms. Grace.

This was a great gay-for-you story. Told from the point of view of Mike, "The kids I grew up with called me a fag. I'm not gay but I guess small features and a lack of arm and chest definition were enough to consider me effeminate by most standards.", the story starts when Mike arrives at his dorm and meets his room-mate Brett.

Brett is the typical tall and muscled jock. However, as Mike gets to know Brett, he realises that Mike isn't all what he expected and he certainly didn't expect him to be gay. The men develop a close friendship which, to the reader is obviously more, but Mike is yet to acknowledge it.

The story involves a traumatic assault on Mike which provides a further push for the relationship development as Brett's protectiveness and nurturing side really kicks in. Although I did think the resolution of the attack on Mike seemed a little strange

It was great that Brett was not the stereotypical jock (so often these stories are about the jock realising he is attracted to the geek). Rather the story focuses on the 'non-gay' Mike gradually realising that he is more attracted to Brett than his newly-found girlfriend. I wasn't overly happy with Mike's treatment of the girlfriend but the way the story was written, Maggie was alright with the outcome and happy to transition to good friend so I guess all was okay.

This story is a nice blend of good characters and interesting plot with some drama thrown in. The sex was also good (it was nice to see Brett not taking the stereotypical role - or at least the role I would have expected - in their first encounter, particularly as Mike was very new to sex).

A nice happy ending although it did seem a bit abrupt - a short last chapter that basically summarised that all was right in the world or at least HFN. "Everything was still new and confusing at times, but I was happier than I'd ever been."

A copy of this book was provided by the author in return for an honest review.

Let’s start with Cover Love! It is simple and sexy, and completely fits the story it’s wrapped around. I grabbed a copy from Amazon as a free read, but I would gladly have paid good money for this book.
Mike is in his first year of college in a foreign state, away from his family and friends. Having spent much of his young life being picked on and bullied, the scrawny more academic than athletic type, is justifiably anxious to meet his new roommate.

Brett is the typical jock, the same kind of person that had picked on and bullied him in the past. Imagine his surprise when he meets Brett and he’s not only friendly and easy to get along with, but he’s gay.

His Undoing is the story of Brett’s hidden attraction to Mike, who is none the wiser in the beginning. As the story progresses Mike makes friends and even grabs himself a “girlfriend”, sadly, he also becomes the unwitting victim of a stalker that results in him being brutalized as the result of a hate crime. Brett and Maggie both are there for him through the ordeal and the aftermath and as his relationship with Maggie progresses to the next level, Mike realizes that he’s not quite as attracted to her as he thinks he should be.

Grace does a phenomenal job of squeezing a lot of content into this short story, as well as conveying Mike’s emotional journey while adding depth and realism to it. I loved the reality of the conversation he and Brett have when Mike is telling him how he feels. This is the first book I’ve read where one page had me saying “Awwww, they are just so damn cute!” then the next had me fanning myself from the steam radiating off the pages when Brett and Mike finally get together.

My only complaint was the way the situation was handled when they discovered who it was that had attacked Mike. I thought there could have been a better outcome, aside from that this was a well written, coming of age, gay love story with some Fantastic guy on guy action!

My Thoughts

Again another well written M/M story. I really enjoy Aria's writting. This was a quick read, but worth it for sure. There was a lot packed into this book. Mike goes through a lot tring to figure out who he wants to be. In the end he finds happiness... who doesn't love that!

Aria Grace has done it again. I really enjoyed this short story. When Mike found out he would be sharing a dorm with a former football star, he was worried. He was the complete opposite of a jock and had been bullied for being scrawny and was not looking forward to repeat that experience. However, Brett was a great guy and seemed to enjoy his company. Although one day, Mike suddenly starts to get threating letters telling him to back off from Brett. But why was he receiving these and was he really at risk because of some crazy jealous ex - boyfriend?

If you like M/M then this book is for you. I couldn’t put the story down. It was very well written and captivated me from the beginning. This was defiantly a page turner and I can’t wait to see what Aria has in store for us next.

SUMMARY (50 words or less)

It’s a novella, so I’m judging it on that fact. Short but well told. I didn’t feel like the story was too short. It felt right. There wasn’t insta love as much as there was an awakening. I still wonder if Mike isn’t hetro flexible or bi.

3.5 stars - this piece is great in that there is no filler or background noise... There are only a couple of characters and in a short story, that is essential because there are no distractions to the story. This being said, I think that the story started a bit slow and had a lack of momentum, but once things got started, the pace really picked up. However, shortly after, the story just ended. Which left me with a big old sigh because I wanted more!

I really liked the chemistry between Brett and Mike. I liked how they started as friends and grew into a relationship.

I wish more was told about their respective backgrounds, but, understand that wasn't really feasible given the length of the story. While there were a few grammatical missteps, they did not take away from the story being told.

All in all, this was a great read.

3.5 - Mike and Brett were college roommates and friends and grew into more especially after a former hookup of Brett's attacked Mike. It was very good for the length allotted, could have had more background and been expanded a bit. Could have used a bit more editing.

All in all, a hot college mm romance.

What a great short story. I would have liked it even more if it had another 150 pages to flush out the characters a bit more, but I know...it was a short. I enjoyed the emotional development between the two MC's and especially with Mike's recognition of his homosexuality. Congrats to Ms. Grace and her efforts here. I will definitely be looking forward to more works from her in the future!

I saw this one was a freebie and saw that it was a new to me author so I thought that I'd take a chance. It turned out to be a really good thing I did because this was such an enjoyable story. It was a blend of Coming of Age and Coming to Know Himself.

Mike is dreading this year at college when he reads the bio on his new roommate. Mike is a less than average height and built guy with no athletic interests whatsoever and finds himself paired with a jock. It has been his experience that this will only end in harassment and bullying.

Isn't he surprised when Brett turns out to be a decent human being who not only treats Mike right, but seems to want to be friends into the bargain. Mike can't believe his luck. But then he gets the first warning text to stay away from Brett. It confuses him until Brett comes clean. He is absolutely flabbergasted to learn that his roomie is gay. Brett isn't in the closet, but he isn't announcing it to the world. Mike's okay with Brett being gay and their shared personal revelations only serve to solidify the friendship for them.

Brett helps Mike hook up with a really nice girl who goes in for the cerebral types, but before he can really enjoy it Mike gets attacked in his own room. Brett is the one to find him battered and beaten on the floor. Brett is more upset than ever when he learns about the threatening texts and he takes on nursing Mike back to health single-handedly. The time with Brett and the thing he has with Maggie only serves to confuse Mike. And he really starts to question what he has believed about himself all his life.

This story is novella length and it is a first person account from Mike's point of view. Mike is observant if not very perceptive so this type of narration isn't a problem. I really enjoyed the story and the characters. If I had one disappointment, it would have been to get a little more at the end because it seem to come to a sudden halt. This only serves to show how into the story I was.

This would appeal to those who enjoy m/m new adult contemporary romance.

Oddly curious how this book went for me. I've never been exposed to any kind of LGBT reading before and I was surprised by what I found in this book. It read a bit more effeminate than I had hoped, but I thought that was just the author's soft touch to this book.

I really enjoyed the building of the two characters. I never felt like I was left wondering who these people were or felt like I was questioning their motives at any point. I appreciated the story taking the view point of a guy who isn't quite sure what to expect in general and then experiencing it from both sides. It put a lot of things into perspective for me and for that I was greatly appreciative.

The story was a very quick read which was appreciated. I'm glad the scenes where they were intimate weren't heavily drawn out or turned into these epic moments (i.e. two people running at each other from opposites sides of a field and meeting in the middle to kiss and blah blah blah). It was very honest and well written. I think I would have liked to see more come from the ending, but overall it was enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend it, if for nothing more than a great perspective on discovering one's sexuality.

I really like this one.
A well developed GFY. I like when an author can give to a commonly use plot a twist to make it different and to own it.
The twink geek type falls for the jock.
In this case the jock, Brett, is the one that is gay. While Mike is discovering who he is.
After a very painful incident they become even closer friends that they already were.
And Mike is finally able to understand his feelings and share them with Brett.
One thing to say is that the end felt cut short, abrupt.
And also I should warn you, the is a very explicit m/f sex scene, it took me by surprise (as in I was not expecting it in a m/m book) but is not sudden, it actually makes sense.
Aria Grace is a new author for me and I'll make sure to read more from her.

There was something so real about the emotional development of the relationship between Brett and Mike. What started out as s tentative friendship between roommates blossomed into so much more. I loved that the author showed the progression of their relationship, even going as far as writing in an almost perfect girlfriend for Mike. Yet even the most perfect girlfriend could not make him forget the feelings his roommate invoked in him.

A beautifully written story whose only flaw was the lack of a more substantial ending. It seemed a bit rushed to me. Other than that, it was a great read and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more by this author.

I always like happy endings, and I liked the cheerful way this story left off. Really enjoyed the story progression as well, Mike's insecurities not being overexaggerated and Brett's longing for Mike being subtle enough to not make me want to yell at Mike for being a dunderhead. One thing though was the resolution to the threatening emails seemed rather abrupt, but then again this isn't much of an issue since Mike and Brett are happy in the end (:
So, great read!
