Caught in the Book One

When Adam’s father catches him in bed with his best friend, he rips Adam away from his comfortable life in the city and sends him to a farm in the country, hoping some hard work will "fix" him. Adam is supposed to work with Ben, a hostile young man who clearly doesn’t want him there, no matter how hard Adam tries to prove himself. When Ben kisses him, Adam is shocked and delighted but terrified his father will once again pull him away from a home he’s grown to like.

As their relationship grows in secret, Ben promises to stay with Adam when school starts to help him get to know the place and the people. However, Amelia, a young woman Ben had dated, latches on to Ben again. Adam is furious at being abandoned to fend for himself on his first day in a new school. A physical confrontation with Amelia lands Adam in trouble again, and his father's involvement complicates all their lives. Betrayal and an uncertain future threaten Adam and Ben's budding summer relationship.

Robbie Michaels grew up in rural upstate New York, the same setting as the beginning of The Most Popular Guy books. It was not always easy growing up thinking he was the only gay person in the world. He felt like a stranger in a very strange land for most of those years, always having to act a part, play a role, until he later met other gay folks and found out that he was not alone. He was teased and bullied when others suspected that he might be gay. But he survived those days and found that life does get better, even though at the time it sure didn’t seem possible. He wants first and foremost to tell others to hang on and to have hope for a better tomorrow. Life is a wonderful, marvelous thing to be embraced and celebrated. Don’t ever give up. You are the only you there is. You are not alone. There are many, many, many others like you out there and some day you will meet them and together you will change the world in a wonderful, positive way.

I liked this book for the most part, but I also found it sort of "meh" when the final credits rolled.

The premise is that city boy Adam gets caught kissing his best friend and his defense attorney dad flips out and moves his son and himself from a NYC suburb to bumfuck Upstate New York to "save" him from becoming one of "those" people.

Then once they arrive in Bumfuck, Adam, for all intents and purposes, becomes the indentured, unpaid farmhand/slave to local (hot, muscley) farm boy Ben for the summer to make "a real man" out of him. *Insert-EyeRoll-for-"Real-Men"-Here*

And Ben himself doesn't exactly endear himself to us initially either.
“Don’t you know that cleaning is women’s work?” <-- Seriously, Ben? SERIOUSLY???

The book mentions that Ben has recently lost his father to a heart attack, supposedly the reason that he's such a surly little bitch boy to everyone, (but especially Adam,) then when he finally stops being a dick to Adam, they *finally* get together and Ben has someone to talk to, there isn't word one about dear old dead daddy. Huh? PPP (pointless plot point).

I enjoyed the fact that the boys were extremely flip-floppy with their roles in bed, but we got more of a general descriptive overview than any real details sex-wise. I also enjoyed that Adam did have a spine and stuck to his guns when he needed to (mostly), despite how we're repeatedly told that Ben was the bigger and stronger of the two.

Overall, I did like the story, but I found it extremely inconsistent that the "strong", opinionated Ben immediately flipped into cowering, whimpering dishrag mode when dealing with his pushy, CUNT/bitch/uber-twat ex(?) girlfriend, Amelia. The author explains that away by saying that Ben 'doesn't like confrontation', but Ben was willing to confront anyone and everyone through the rest of the book. So, yeah, WTF?

Plus...

And the last inconsistency that I'll mention is what Adam's dad did, in public, when he found out about the boys. People ashamed of "the gay" don't do that. They also tend not to do a complete 180 on being supportive.

(My logic puppies say, " Say what??? ")

But "shit that didn't make a lot of sense to me" aside, this one was about 3 1/4 stars for me.

3.5 stars! An enjoyable YA read. Yes, both Ben and Adam acted immature at times and made poor decisions, as teenage boys sometimes do. But I was really disappointed in Ben Overall, I enjoyed it and will probably read the next one.

"Have you been sleeping with her?"

He hesitated for a moment before trying to answer, which gave me all the answers I needed.

3 STARS!

This one was a very cute story. There were some things I liked and some things I hated but overall, it was an okay book.

The story started off somewhere in a middle of the scene with Adam and his best friend Mark. It didn't need a momentum as it just packed the punch to the point. I liked that. Speaking of Mark, he was an asshole. Adam's Dad was an asshole too and he annoyed me so much.

Anyway, Adam and Ben had not much chemistry to be honest. The first kiss was unexpected because there was not even a single sign or at least action that gave away Ben's attraction to Adam except for the fact that we knew he was the love interest based on the blurb. But I liked Ben and his mother, Melinda. Although I was iffy with the change of personality of Ben. I knew he would turn all mushy when he declared his attraction to Adam but the transition to that wasn't really that written well. Some things just felt really weird as there were no momentum going to that point of the story (even if I liked it in the first chapter). The sex scenes were great tho.

The story really went slow in the love plot. I felt like I was almost halfway through and there was not a single important even leading to the first kiss.

But other than those, I thought the story was really cute and refreshing (maybe because it was in a farm). Love the secret pool Ben had. Loved the farm. Hated Amelia (which I know I will hate more BECAUSE OF THE FUCKING BLURB FOR BOOK 2 WHICH I'LL TALK ABOUT LATER).

The thing I loved here was Adam. It's really rare we see a main character who didn't let anyone step all over him. He didn't take crap from the principal, from Amelia, and especially from Ben! I was so disappointed with Ben at one point. I thought it was unforgivable. Ben really held himself well.

Oh and the father had a great redemption arc. It was very realistic for me.

I think I'll read the Book 2 because this one was okay but I JUST HATE WHAT I KNOW WILL HAPPEN IN BOOK 2.

My thought about the blurb for book 2:

I really liked this book, but it only gets 3-stars because there were too many sudden switches between real world believability and unbelievability. For example:

Adam, in grade 12, is more adult than many of the adults I know. No one is that levelheaded all the time. He was just too perfect.

Adam's dad appears at basically only 3 pivotal point on the story arc causing two major disruptions in Adam's life. Given that the story is told from Adam's perspective and his dad is physically absent most of the book, I found it very difficult to reconcile the changes in his personality each time he appears - he moves the plot along but he is too poorly defined to be a believable character.

Why is Ben so antagonistic towards Adam when they first meet? Sure he has reasons to be surly but to my mind the open hostility was over-the-top and unexplained. Later, why does Ben suddenly change? Sure, Adam may have been unaware of Ben's changing feelings but at some point, if I was Adam, I would have asked for a clarification. Again the plot is moved along but these situations are too ill-defined to be believable.

I liked reading this, but it was nothing special. It has the feel of those self-published books; one feels the absence of an editor. Not sure if that is the case here or not, but the book is somewhat repetitive, with certain phrases or descriptions reappearing again and again. The tone is matter-of-face and somewhat reminiscent of Jay Bell. There is no real emotional impact here for the reader, but the story is involving and I certainly was not bored reading this. I will probably read more by this author, but he will never be a favorite or special writer for me because of the emotionally dry delivery of his material.

Ok, so good this reading. I cannot even write a correct and decent review. Loved the angst, loved the MCs (even shitty, stupid and weak Ben, I hate him but loved him since there are people so coward, such assholes masked by puppy eyed face!) and hope, really really really hope Adam dumps Ben and ends with Bill or another wonderful hunk in another place! I am so f*** (sorry for my french) rabid about all this crappy story! But it's real! It's true, that's not the edulcorated queer romance I usually read, and this is why I love it!

Recensione in ANTEPRIMA “Caught” e “Caught in the Middle”

Adam has managed to keep his sexuality a secret from his father--until his father comes home early one night and catches him in bed with his best friend. Determined to get Adam away from "bad influences," his father uproots him from the life he's known and takes him to live on an old family farm in the country. If that wasn't bad enough, Adam has been promised as an extra set of hands for the neighbors, and is forced to work with Ben, a surly young man who very clearly would rather Adam wasn't there at all. But Ben's not unattractive. And when Adam pushes through the rough exterior, he finds there may be more to his new "supervisor" than he realized. But even if Ben is interested in return, can a relationship like theirs survive in a small town? And what would Adam's father say or do if he found out?

I don't like the stories where parents are terrible to their children when they find out they're any part of the LGBTQ spectrum, but only because I wish they were not a reality for anyone in our community. But since they are, they need to be told, if only to help provide glimmers of hope that things can and do get better, and hopefully these kinds of stories will one day be clearly in the realm of fiction. The story does a good job of addressing the issues that Adam and Ben face, within themselves, with each other, and against the world. There are a few change of heart moments for characters that I thought were a bit superficial or rushed, but overall this is an enjoyable read.

Great read of love forgiveness and general happiness!

I enjoyed all the characters in this story and how they all inter-reacted with each other in the story! Feeling down or blue give this story a read and there's a good chance you'll be smiling at the end! On with the next chapters in Ben and Adams life! Can wait to see what happens!

Summary:

As this story, I wasn't sure what sadden and angered me more, the way Adam's father treated him or the way Mark, his boyfriend, acted when Adam's father caught them in bed kissing. Mark not only blamed him for the situation, but when Mark hit him he ended any friendship they had between them. Uprooting Adam to a dilapidated farm in the country was supposed to “man him a man” while in reality it allowed Adam to start over. Adam's father may have been a lawyer, but when he started to leave Adam for days alone with only the neighbor Melinda to look after him was not right. Adam may have lived in the city all his life, but he took on farming chores with a determination that was incredible. It helped that Melinda's son Ben was the ultimate eye candy for Adam! Adam and Ben's mistrust quietly began to change into something neither expected, but can it withstand the difficulties they may face in high school? Their story has only begun and I for one will be waiting impatiently for the next book in the Caught in the Act series.

3.5 star review by Rhonda

Poor young Adam, first he gets caught making out with his best friend and romantic interest Mark by his father. Then Mark runs for the hills and pushes Adam away from him, declares himself straight and blames Adam for swaying him to be gay which he swears now that he is not. He also does not want to see Adam anymore and actually becomes mean to the point of violence.

Dear old dad won’t even talk to him anymore except to tell him to pack his things and won’t even tell him where they are going until after hours of driving into the countryside. Where turns out to be an old family farm where he hopes to fix what is wrong with his son so that he will turn straight and forget all about being gay by being around some “real men” doing real men’s work. Hah! That never works does it? Needless to say Adam doesn’t react very well to this news right up until he meets Ben, a fellow worker on the farm and what do you know!! He is gay and will be attending the same school where Adam is going to be finishing his senior year of high school. Seems like it is all going to go his way after all, he doesn’t mind the countryside, his dad is no longer totally spazzing out and he has a new bff /bf. The boyfriend though just happens to be in the closet and dating a girl in school. Damn, doesn’t that bite? We have all the angst, turmoil and hurt you would expect in those circumstances, but this time Adam decides to fight for what he wants, damn the consequences. This is a young adult book and does not have any heavy sex involved but is a well written novel that will appeal to all ages

What happens when your dad catches you in the bed making out? And with a guy at that? Adam finds out the hard way. He faces the cold shoulder of his dad and his best friend turning on him at the same time. Can things get worse? Yes they can. Adams dad shows up and tells him to pack for several weeks they are going somewhere but won’t say where. Adam fears the worst that it may be military school, or one of those pray the gay out camps but finds himself in the middle of nowhere on a ramshackle farm that no one has lived in for weeks. Maybe one of those camps wouldn’t be so bad… then it gets worse. He finds out his father has promised the neighbor that he will work for them. Free of charge. All summer. But can blessings come in nightmares?

I thought this was a very good book. I loved Adam with his snarky wit and felt sorry for him. I still don’t know about Ben. One of the things I liked about this is that it wasn’t a perfect, love at first sight, knight in shining story. Ben and Adams relationship has lots of up and downs and twists and turns. The only issue I had with the book is at time there were a few repetitive lines, but it didn’t really effect the story for me. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

If you like young adult, coming of age, first loves, family drama, sweet relationships and a relatively clean but sexy story this is for you.

I enjoyed this story, even the frustrating parts that had me yelling at certain characters. The frustration makes the book realistic, which I like in this kind of story. Adam and Ben both have challenges to conquer. Adam was removed from his previous life by his father, who caught Adam making out with his best friend and FREAKED. Then Adam meets Ben, who ends up having some peer issues going on. Yeah, I didn't like the way Ben handled some things, but I found his actions true to life considering his age. I enjoyed it and look forward to starting the sequel.
