Based on my research and on Trevor Royle’s book on Culloden, the 1740’s was a tumultuous time in Scotland’s history, and I reflected that in The Highlander’s Secret.
The Highlander’s Secret is a friends-to-lovers, afraid to commit, revenge, dark secret, marriage-of-convenience, and spy caper Historical Romance novel that doesn’t shy away from violence or brutality. If you are sensitive to these things, this is not the book for you.
But if you love happy endings, attractive and complex main characters who save the day and give you one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride, then you are exactly the reader I am looking for! Hello my dear friends :)
Writing this book took me to some dark places and I will be honest, the original manuscript had parts that I eventually ended up cutting due to the feedback from my Critique Group. So, what you end up getting is a tender slow burn yet steamy love story that stands defiantly in the center of a tornado of brutality and violence and says, ‘do your worse’.
I hope you enjoy the read, and please leave me your feedback!
Thank you.

A second chance at love for two old friends thoroughly knocked around by life.

Both children from neighbouring clans, and he her brother’s best friends, Phoebe & Slade grew up together in the Highlands – she harbouring a secret crush, he her guardian angle when she got into scrapes. But both were scarred by loss and their paths diverged.
Now, a decade later, she’s a spy for the Jacobite Movement undercover as lady’s companion, and he’s a war-hardened Cavalry Colonel, arms dealer and double spy. Little do they know they want to take down the same man for very different reasons.
When her mission goes south, she runs to him, and together they make their way back home. Old and new feelings arise, but her fear thwarts their budding romance – until a compromising kiss forces them to marry.
All’s well that ends well – except... the redcoats are still brutally decimating their people, Slade still blames himself for his fiancée’s demise, the man who violated Phoebe isn’t quite ready to accept defeat, and their spymaster has his own plans for them.

This story was a gripping, emotional, action-packed read with a nice side helping of delicious steam, close female friendship, folklore, caretaking, family bonding, personal growth, redemption and forgiveness. The 1700s were tumultuous times in Scotland, and this tale doesn’t shy away from that. At times it’s dark and twisty with political intrigue, corruption, on-page brutality and abuse, soul-crushing guilt, emotional trauma and revenge, but there’s also this beautiful, empowering, heartwarming, tender, slow burn romance at its centre and a ton of healing for both MCs. Trust doesn’t come easily for Phoebe, and Slade never pushes, not even when he figures out her secrets. Seeing their relationship slowly take shape, was a thing of beauty and it balanced out the darkness of certain passages.

It was my first by this author; I really enjoyed the style and flow of her writing, and I’m definitely keeping a look-out for the next books in this series!

The Highlander’s Secret is a well-written story rich with emotion and mystery. I truly enjoyed how Cordon pieced together the puzzles of this story without ever giving away too much too soon. There is no huge backstory info dump, only morsels of information to gather as she slowly sprinkles them in chapter to chapter. Both characters have tragic backstories that really flesh them out and make them worth rooting for.
To be honest, this book is a bit of a slow go— at first! The chapters are short and the writing style is easily digested, so it’s not like a chore to read. Though, once it picks up, it really revs. When Phoebe flees from an attacker only to end up at Slade’s door, I was locked in.
Slade MacLean and Phoebe Dunbar are old family friends who spent their youth in the Highlands together. Plagued by different ordeals, their paths diverge. By happenstance, they meet at British Officer Bolingbroke’s home. Slade is there to sell him guns. Phoebe is there to spy on him. Both are working for the Jacobites, but neither can quite pinpoint what the other is up to.
Phoebe always had a thing for Slade, but she was just the kid sister of his friend. Now Fifi is all grown up, and Slade is taking notice. He doesn’t quite know what to make of her. The girl he once knew to be cheerful and carefree has morphed into a woman who is beautiful, but distant and careful. Phoebe is an enigma he intends to solve.
Cordon builds tension well. A game of billiards becomes high pressure, especial Phoebe has a lot riding on her: her secret being discovered and a kiss from a man she’s been attracted to since she was a girl. Now, it seems, the feeling is mutual, but she doesn’t want to admit it to herself. She’s trying to keep her focus on her mission, but my goodness Slade is making it hard.
‘“Why, Fifi, you’ve sworn twice today. Such colorful language for a lass who goes out of her way to appear colorless.” Slade chuckled.” Did I mention Slade notices everything? I mean everything!
After a kiss between them is witnessed by Phoebe’s overprotective brother, to avoid impropriety, Slade and Phoebe get married. Neither is super opposed to this idea, as they know each other from before, but they still have plenty to discover, as well.
Slade MacLean is a wonderful MMC in that he’s a perfect balance of dark intensity and gentlemanly deference. Phoebe isn’t a whiny heroine or even a Mary Sue. She’s earned her stripes and is believably a reformed romantic who desperately wants Slade to prove her wrong.
I love how Cordon teases the spice along, seducing the reader just as Slade seduces Phoebe. It’s slow, sensual, and climatic in the best way.
Whenever I wasn’t reading, I was actively wondering what Phoebe and Slade were gonna get up to, and that seems like a pretty high compliment for a book. There’s nothing like one that you can’t get out of your head.
Don’t let The Highlander’s Secret be Roma Cordon’s best kept secret! Go read this book!

Compelling, Poignant And Spicy

I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping historical romance novel by an author who was previously unknown to me. The plot is very well written, very interesting because of the many historical tidbits that give a good insight into life and the conflicts in Scotland in the mid-18th century, very emotional, action-packed and full of intrigue, suspense, danger and spicy love scenes. The tropes are:

- Brother’s friend
- Childhood crush
- Friends to lovers
- Marriage of convenience
- Spy romance
- Revenge

I really liked the two main characters. Phoebe is a strong heroine who, despite and because of a traumatic experience in her past, has redefined herself and become a spy for the Jacobites, and Slade is a Scottish army colonel, arms dealer and double agent who suffers from guilt and is on a personal vendetta. Their romance is slow burning and bumpy due to Phoebe's history, but the affection, mutual respect and understanding between them were palpable from the start. I thought it was wonderful how patiently and understandingly Slade helped Phoebe overcome her trauma, standing by her side protectively and motivating her.
TW: Violence, off-page sexual violence and suicide in the past

After Phoebe "Hawke" Dunbar was abused by a Redcoat years ago, she began working as a spy for the Movement, an elite group of Jacobite rebels, fighting against the atrocities committed by the English. Her new assignment takes her undercover to English General Bolingbroke, who is involved in illegal arms deals and is said to be responsible for unauthorised attacks on Scottish villages. There she meets Slade MacLean, a childhood friend she was in love with, but who disappeared without a trace.
Slade, now a colonel in the Scottish army and arms dealer, is weary of war and still blames himself for the death of his great love. He also wants to take revenge on Bolingbroke by exposing his illegal activities. He can hardly believe it when he meets Phoebe, who is secretive. But when she asks him for shelter, he is only too happy to help the now attractive young woman. When the two are caught in a compromising situation, they have to marry, even though Phoebe never wanted to submit to a man again and Slade had once sworn after the death of his fiancée that he would never marry and endanger another woman…

If you like emotionally intense romance novels with endearing characters, great world building, historical insights, action, suspense, and spice, you‘re sure to enjoy this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical novel set during a tumultuous period in Scotland’s history. As a first-time reader of this author, I was captivated by her engaging style and impressive ability to weave historical events with a heartfelt romance.

The story reunites two childhood friends after seven years apart, sparking emotions that Phoebe Dunbar is both afraid to acknowledge and powerless to ignore. Phoebe is a strong, independent woman, trained as a spy for an elite group of Jacobite rebels. Determined never to show vulnerability, she has built her life around self-reliance and secrecy.

Colonel Slade McLean crosses paths with Phoebe and finds himself unable to forget the striking woman he once knew. He senses her hidden secrets and is determined to protect her at all costs. Phoebe, haunted by a traumatic event from her past, struggles with her attraction to Slade, recoiling even from his gentle, consensual touches. When an innocent kiss is witnessed by her brother, societal expectations force them into marriage to avoid scandal. Despite the circumstances, Slade’s deep desire to shield Phoebe from harm remains unwavering, even as he conceals his own dark past.

Phoebe's resilience and secret life as a rebel spy make her a heroine who truly resonates, while Slade’s blend of guilt, grief, loyalty, and tenderness adds depth to his character. Watching their relationship evolve—from guarded interactions to profound trust and passion—was a joy every step of the way.

Though the story felt a bit lengthy at times, the richly drawn characters and emotional journey kept me engaged. The novel is a beautifully written tale of redemption, devotion, and second chances, enriched with fascinating historical details. I look forward to exploring more books by this author and diving deeper into this compelling series.

We have two people who have known each other since childhood! Phoebe Dunbar code name Hawk also known as Fifi is skilled in combat and weaponry for the “Movement!” She was attacked 7 years ago and has made it her mission to rescue others especially women!
We also have Slade MacLean who has fought in two wars and is now a member of the Royal Scots Grays! Some years ago Slade was stricken by grief at the loss of his betrothed and it has taken much for him to survive!
Fifi seven years after dealing with a malicious assault is still not over it! For the first time she is attracted to Slade and she to him!
They both are set to return to the Highlands but neither are sure if what will await them!
Fifi encountered a mutual enemy and left him worse for wear!
When they are found in a compromising position marriage seems inevitable!
Both are keeping secrets but their chemistry is explosive yet how will they have a future? Fifi is still terrified of men and Slade is still bent on revenge! What if their missions are one and the same? Bravo very well done!.

4.5⭐️/1🌶️ A historical novel focusing on the time just after the Scottish Jacobites lost, two childhood friends’ paths cross and attraction is mutual.

Phoebe is a spy trying to gather information on a wealthy Englishman. After being accosted 7 years prior, she has never gotten over it. Even being attracted to Slade, she jumps at his consented touches.

Slade has had his own tragedies and also has avoided marriage until he runs into his childhood friend. Instant attraction leads to a kiss— caught by her brother, his friend.

Naturally, that means they must marry. During their time together, they learn what has happened in the last few years and help each other heal from their past trauma. But will it last? Will their demons come back to haunt them? Will the spying tear them apart?

This daring and heartwarming story is long and full of historical details and perfect for those that don’t want romance as the focus of the whole story but also like a little spice. I enjoyed this read once it got to the romance part.

Tropes:
Past trauma
Childhood friends
Friends to lovers
Forced proximity
Adventure vibes

A Riveting Scottish Historical Romance
Phoebe and Slade are both fighting their own private battles as well as a dangerous one for the Scottish rebellion—and neither quite trusts what the other was doing in the house of a corrupt British general. As the truth slowly comes to light, so does the pull between them. They have always been friends, but when Slade left, he was meant for another life—and another woman—and now he’s returned marked by a past she doesn’t know, while Phoebe is guarding a pain she can’t yet share.
Yet something in her past makes her flinch from his touch, and Slade knows those shadows run deep. She feels the same pull he does—but what happened to her, and what ghosts are they both still fighting?
I thoroughly enjoyed this Scottish historical romance. Phoebe and Slade’s secrets are revealed piece by piece, creating a steady thread of suspense beneath the love story. If you enjoy your Highland romances laced with treachery and intrigue, featuring a fiercely protective hero and a feisty, capable heroine, don’t walk—run—to this one. I’m very much looking forward to whatever this author writes next.

Sometimes, you want to read about a hot Scottish guy and the Sassenach lady who captures his heart (I'm looking at you, Outlander. Also Julie Garwood, you have a lot to answer for!). But other times, you want to read about two hot Scottish freedom fighters finding love together after trauma.

As the book opens, Phoebe is embedded in a British army officer's household looking for evidence that will prove his corruption. Slade is there to sell him guns. Not an auspicious beginning ... except that Phoebe and Slade have known each other for years, and she has a feeling things are not all as they seem.

Slade and Phoebe end up on a road trip together back to Scotland and mayyyybe they compromise each other a little bit. They both have a ton of past they have to deal with - mind the CWs (death by suicide, SA, general violence due to Scotland in the 1700s) - but with each other's help, they manage to get past it.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

This is a friendship to lovers story, but as they say the road to love is never easy!
Phoebe and Slade have grown up together , she always had a crush on him and he was always her saviour in situations. But as time goes by and they grow up the runs and directions change and they lose touch.
A decade later they met up unexpectedly. She is a spy undercover as a ladies maid ad he is an officer /spy. When her assignment runs into trouble she runs to Slade for help. They escape back to Scotland but on the way felling re-emerge and they face many issues.
The story is gripping and action packed. The characters are well developed but with room for personal growth within the story. Forgiveness and love is also present.
This is the first book I have read From this author and enjoyed it and will be watching for more of her books.

A riveting piece of history
In a Scotland torn by British brutal retribution after Culloden, Phoebe Dunbar abhors any man’s touch after a devastating experience years ago. She infiltrates the household of a British general to spy for the Raven, a Scottish spymaster. Slade MacLean, back from years of war on the Continent, guilt ridden due to the conviction that he has caused his betrothed’s suicide, does everything in his power to protect Phoebe, his childhood friend’s sister. However, when she is discovered in his arms, they are forced to contract a marriage of convenience. Unbeknownst to Phoebe, Slade is also a spy for the same Movement, but the rules force him to hide his allegiance even from his wife. Will his love and patience overcome Phoebe’s aversion for the marriage bed and what will be his reaction when he discovers the cause of her deep-seated fear?

The Highlander’s Secret pulls you in from the very first line, with an amazing start hinting at spies with code names, and a shot piercing the air signaling danger. From there, the story unfolds with rugged Highland atmosphere, simmering tension, and two unforgettable characters. Phoebe's strength after heartbreak, and her hidden life as a rebel spy, makes her a heroine you truly feel for, while Slade carries guilt and grief yet remains fiercely loyal and unexpectedly tender. Watching their relationship grow into trust, passion, and something earned was a joy every step of the way.
Roma Cordon blends Scottish history with raw emotional intensity, crafting a romance that feels both high-stakes and deeply intimate. Their love feels powerful, hard-won, and unforgettable. A beautifully written story of redemption, devotion, and second chances that I couldn't put down!

“The Highlander’s Secret” by Roma Cordon is an enticing and thrilling blend of intrigue, historical fiction, and romance with a feisty heroine and a swoony male love interest. (Trigger warning for past sexual assault.) Phoebe is a spy for the Scottish rebel forces whilst working as a companion to the wife of a British army general. She is shocked to encounter Slade MacLean, a colonel in the Scots Greys, at the house, a family friend who once saved her life and with whom she fell hopelessly in love. Slade, though, had become engaged to another woman who died before they could wed. With an intricate and exciting plot, skilful writing, and fascinating characters, this book is certain to delight fans of historical fiction!

I was so excited to dive into this book, and it definitely didn't disappoint! Cordon's skill with immersive descriptions pulls you right into the world and history of the Scottish Highlands.

I loved learning about the clans and their battles for rights against the English, but of course, I especially loved the tension between Phoebe and Slade. This is a slow burn based on mutual trust and respect and a shared history. Both characters have demons and goals and they both slowly come together as their feelings grow. I was kicking my feet the whole way through as I watched them admit how they felt. I loved this and can't wait for the next!

An exciting new Scottish historical romance with steamy leads being brought together in this second chance romance.
Phoebe is an excellent, strong female lead – a resourceful [and beautiful] spy. Her past crush, Slade MacLean, is now even more appealing and comes with a moving and tragic backstory.
Cordon’s enthralling story pulls us into the Jacobite Movement, and a romping tale of entrapment begins.
Perhaps some trigger warning for content, but an excellent debut which touches on a fascinating period of Scottish history.
Congratulations Roma.
