First love. Second Chance. And a secret that can derail everything.
Betrayed and brokenhearted, Maggie Raynor fled the small town of Moose Lake with the tender consequence of her fierce love for Baxter Martin. Isolated from her family and all she knows, Maggie raises her sweet son away from the one man intent on harming everyone connected to her baby's father.
Eleven long years later, it's safe to go home. And long past time to introduce Baxter to his son.
The last thing Baxter Martin expects when he returns to win back the love of his life is a ten-year-old son.
Baxter doesn't have the first clue how to be a father. But he knows how it is to be cast aside and abandoned. He knows there's no future worth having without Maggie. And he knows he has to stop running.
The past is catching up. This time, he's not facing it alone.
This book took me on an emotional journey I was not prepared for. I knew it would tug at the heartstrings and make me cry as all of Devin's books do, however, this one tore my heart open from the first page and put it back together by the last page. It was a rollercoaster ride of tears, anger and happiness for Baxter and Maggie.
There were times I needed to step away from the book to reel my emotions in, which in turn caused me to stay up until two in the morning because I was desperate for answers about what happened that night.
The Locksmith’s Promise will make you believe in true love and soulmates, that second chances with your first love is possible and that nothing will stand in the way of a man that truly loves you.
This is my first Devin Sloane book that I have read and I really enjoyed this story so much.
We meet Maggie & Baxter in this book they were dating and she ends up pregnant but she has to leave Baxter because of something that happened. They find each other again 10 years later and they try again and Baxter doesn’t know how to be a father. I really loved there story so much.
4 stars; this is my first book by this author and I really loved it. It takes you on an emotional journey of a second chance romance and it was very well written with rounded good characters and without tropes being used for the sake of adding drama.
I liked both Maggie and Baxter and their journey of coming back together was beautiful.
What is this book about? This story is about Maggie and Baxter; they’ve known each other since high school and eventually started dating later? And fell deep in love. Like deeeep. One night Maggie sees something and runs away. Fast forward 11 years, they meet again and find their journey back to love.
I will say this second chance was done very well. I didn’t feel slighted or angry at one and in fact both did wrongs which were righted in the end.
Spoilers ahead:
Maggie gets pregnant so part of their journey is Baxter meeting his son. Now Maggie did try telling Baxter about being pregnant but the aftermath of them thinking he cheated led him to spiral for a year straight. And he didn’t answer.
What I didn’t like is that their past wasn’t explored very well so I’m wasn’t sure about a few things. We know in high school he was hanging out with Jenny; we know Maggie saw them make up but did they date? More importantly, when did Maggie and Baxter start dating? And Maggie and jenny were friends so how did that go if Baxter was dating Jenny? Was he dating Jenny?
We hear him explain that Jenny just understood his home life cause she went though her own similar things and that they would mostly smoke up, etc. we know he said ““She was my friend. She understood what my homelife was like. And most of the time, we just smoked up.” He shook his head. “It wasn’t even a relationship, not in the sense you may be thinking.”
So did they ever hook up? Was it platonic with a bit of kissing? It felt a bit unanswered.
More importantly when did they start and stop dating??
Despite the above, this man was head over heels about Maggie. I never felt for a second Jenny was a real OW. His love shone for Maggie and he was ALL about her. I loved his journey back to her and I loved their cute relationship.
I wish we had ironed out the details that’s it
I did really feel for Jenny and really don’t get why she did what she did…. I pitied her a lot but also I don’t know why she decided to be the martyr in this it made no sense and I wish she just said the truth instead of protecting 2 people who didn’t even talk to her for years… so while I felt really bad for her, she kinda brought this on herself…. You don’t need to be a Mary sue sacrificing yourself
Safety info; she was celibate for the whole time and he was celibate for a decade but the first year when he was spiralling he was with OW. I didn’t mind it much cause he was then celibate for 10 years ahah
The Locksmith’s Promise (The Promise Duet Book 1) By Devin Sloane
Moose Lake is one of those small towns where everyone knows everyone else! Where your neighbours know things that no one wants them to know and where people will come together when one of their own is in need of help.
Maggie and Baxter had known each other since what seemed to be forever. They had one thing in common, they loved each other and that was the only common thing they shared. Not a bad thing to share, Maggie had a good life and parents who loved her and then there was Baxter. His mother had left him with his father. A man who would prefer to drink away his nights and who would think nothing of not feeding his son or worse.
Maggie and Baxter had plans, but one night, those plans were blown, had Maggie running and Baxter looking for her until he had to stop looking. He needed to stop, remake himself and hopefully get the chance to find Maggie again and tell her he had never stopped loving her. With one phone call his wishes were answered. Could they become friends again? Was there still love there to build on? Will Baxter be able to convince her to give him a second chance?
One of my favorite authors Devin Sloane has given readers another one of her take your feelings ….spread them all out …. and fix you and her characters. I’m not joking when I say that she is my therapist and in a way she is. Her beautiful stories are the kind that allow you to get into the lives of her characters, to see their fears and their wishes and all while she knows that given time all will told. Characters will heal and readers will find out everything that brought us all together in a way that only she can.
I loved Maggie and Baxter! Ten years is a long time, there are secrets that have been kept; some will bring happiness and hope and others will help our main characters look back at that time ten years ago and see that their love was deep then and deeper now and that manipulation the the catalyst that tore them apart.
You need to read this authors stories, they are about love, loss, reunion and what was meant to be just might take a little longer to hold in your hand, heads and hearts.
he whored around ceaselessly the first year of their break up because he thought he cheated on her, then celibate for 10 years why the fuck not just make him celibate for the entire duration? finding out he didn't cheat yet slept around after is just as bad in my book. the lack of cheating was not relieving when he actually did sleep with plenty of other women afterwards and i don't even understand why the fmc even bothered to run away for 11 years and keep his kid away from him when she jumped into his arms the second they met again believing his every word, why tf didn't she do that 11 years ago? why take the kid away from the dad for so long and waste so much time just to be spineless 11 years later? he was even dumber. because the ow has tried to reach out and tell him the truth for YEARSSSS yet he never listened to her, if his dumb ass couldn't remember the night nor the cheating, wouldn't the logical thing to do was at least hear the ow out when she was so insistant to tell him what happened? which was pretty simple, his evil dad basically put her naked and in bed with him while he was black out drunk, the end.
im sorry but this plot wasn't based on misunderstanding nor miscommunication it was based on absolute sheer idiocy ****
"What if I’d have stayed? What if I’d demanded an explanation back then when things were fresh? What if Jenny had an explanation for everything? I shied away from the idea of talking to her."
When Devin writes a new book, I always prepare myself for the emotional ride it is going to take me on and while The Locksmith's Promise probably had less tears shed than some of her other books, it wasn't without them.
This book is a beautiful story of how deep true love is, what it can endure, pain, heartbreak, and familial abuse. There were so many times that my heart ached for Baxter and Maggie and everything they had endured. The childhood abuse that Bax suffered was heartbreaking and I hated how his father played such a huge role in what tore him and Maggie apart.
After coming home, Bax learns the biggest secret that he could never imagine and I loved the way he stepped up and never backed down despite all he had missed out on. The journey that these two take together to heal the pain of the past was absolutely beautiful and Devin writes these scenes in a way that makes you feel the emotions they are going through. There is one poignant moment, which brought out the tears, but felt so freeing and I was so happy that Bax got the chance to let go and move on to his future with Maggie and Corwin.
TROPES: Small Town Single Mom Second Chance Surprise Baby It’s Always Been You
Is there anything better than a new series from a beloved author? And this Moose Lake series is Sage Ridge adjacent since our hero was last living there and is friends with characters we’ve come to know and love. I’m hoping that we'll see more Sage Ridge cameos as the series progresses.
The story of Baxter and Maggie is a complicated, tangled mess. She left town shortly before Baxter did, never letting him know she was pregnant with his child. Ten years later, she and her son Corwin are back in town, and Baxter returns to Moose Lake shortly after.
There's a lot of pain and misunderstandings from the past that need healing, the least of which is introducing Baxter to his son. But Baxter has other ghosts to lay to rest and things from his past to resolve, in addition to trying to be a family with Maggie and their son.
This is a long, difficult, emotional journey, and emotions are something this gifted storyteller does well. Baxter and Maggie’s entire journey to forever is difficult, bumpy, and fraught with complications. In the end they find healing and a new beginning, with the kind of story angst lovers will devour in one sitting.
If I had to choose, I'd say that second chance romance is my favorite. Surprise/hidden pregnancy? Not so much, but in this book, it definitely works for the story.
Bax was Maggie's first love, but one night changed everything and sent Maggie running away to raise Bax's son all on her own. Bax also fled the small town of Moose Lake, but eleven years have passed and he's now ready to face his past. He's also ready to win back the love of his life, but he wasn't expecting to come face to face with the son that he never knew about.
There is a true villain in this story and it's definitely not Bax nor Maggie. While there was a serious lack of communication which could have prevented a lot of heartache, I could totally understand the feelings of each of these characters. The grief, heartbreak, anger and shame...I felt it all right along with each of them.
While I had my suspicions about this storyline (and I was mostly correct), it was still a heartbreaking revelation, and I look forward to book two of this duet. There is no need to worry about a cliffhanger; there isn't one for Bax and Maggie. I can't wait to see what happens in the next story though.
Well this was an absolutely delightful little read that I totally flew through in a day. There was nothing I didn't like here! Baxter is a complicated leading male character who we know as the quiet guitarist from Drivetrain, he returns home to Moose Lake and we finally see his full evolution. Maggie hasn't stepped foot in her home town in over 10 years, but she also has quite a journey over the course of the book. I loved all the other characters we met here, particularly Bax's friends who were fiercely loyal, protective, but also gave the scenes they were in some real humour. There's some really difficult history for Maggie and Baxter, particularly Bax with neglect and abuse throughout his childhood and early adulthood. It was all handled really sensitively and bravely. After you finish the book there is a link to get a bonus chapter and that was the sweetest little thing to read. I am so glad to have seen that. I will be looking forward to returning to moose lake to see what's next!
Whenever I read a book by Ms. Sloane, I am swept away by her attention to detail, her storytelling abilities and her beautiful writing style. The Locksmith's Promise is one of those books where your emotions will run the gamut, have your heart breaking, yet at the same time, hoping for happiness and that love will find its way back. Baxter and Maggie had a beautiful life and relationship together until one night when their worlds were shattered. Bax's life went to hell after his mother passed away. Now he had to live with an abusive father who, at every turn, made sure Bax was suffering. On the other hand, Maggie lived a life of happiness with a loving family. Ten years apart finally sees them come face to face but anger and trust live at the surface as well as a huge secret that sees Bax's life change. The chemistry and love they shared had been pushed down and now are itching to get back to the surface. Can Maggie get past the hurt that happened all those years ago? Will Bax ever find out what really happened the night that Maggie walked out of his life? I loved the way Bax worked so hard to prove to Maggie he is not the person he was when he left. That he would do anything for her and even though she only wanted to be friends, he was going to wait for her. When the sparks started to ignite, they could not stop the blaze from happening. They were truly soulmates who finally found their way back to one another.
Small town Second chance First love Secret child Found family
Baxter and Maggie
This story was another conflicted emotional journey. Live and relationships are never easy with these characters. Baxter and Maggie were real when they were youn. I. Love and making plans for their future together. One crazy night threw everything out of order. 10 years later they have their reckoning. It’s not easy to talk about the past hurt and missed opportunities. They start slow and start to build a new foundation. It’s painful but soul cleansing. The love has always been there even during g their separation. They need to rebuild trust. They are not the sane kids from before, they are changed by circumstances and life in general. I loved that they took the time to work through things. They lost a lot of time. Secrets, lies and mistakes tore them apart but love brought them through. “
Maggie and Baxter both victims of a cruel past, now a decade later can they have a future? Well Baxter is back and he's ready to make it happen if he can just get Maggie to o hear him out. Maggie however wants the past to stay where it belongs. I mean she can get past it if she just leaves it all where it is right? Yeah no, not even Maggie truly believes that and as we all know the truth will always come out. This second chance romance is a great start to this duet with wonderful characters, lots of growth, a slow burn that at times is very sweet, our hero definitely works hard for his second chance. Long lasting friendships that would make anyone envious. I couldn't wait to read the second book. I have voluntarily left this review.
I really don't think that there is an author out there that writes emotional, damaged characters that somehow make it through to the other side any better that Devin Sloane. Her books always take me on a journey that makes my heart ache and then rejoice.
This is a second chance romance in which Maggie and Baxter were basically wrenched apart when younger and now come together with the same love they had then. There are obstacles for them to overcome, but the ultimate goal is to become a family with their son that Baxter never knew existed.
A great start to a spin-off series!
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts are my own.
I love second chance romances and the backstory behind Baxter and Maggie’s breakup was truly such a heartbreaking one. The author has done it again, writing an amazing love story, where I can’t help but root for Baxter and Maggie to finally be together.
The story of forgiveness, redemption and true love kept me glued to my seat as I read through the book in one sitting. I enjoyed every chapter as we are given glimpses into their past, as we learnt about the truth of what actually happened and see how Baxter adapts to becoming a father in the present.
While the journey to their Happy Ever After was full of pain and regrets, the ending promises a future that is bright and oh so sweet!
This book was wonderful. I could not get enough of them, and the way that Baxter fights for the family he wants had me falling in love with him. Maggie is so strong and deserves everything and more. Corwin is such a lovable kid, there is no way you could not want to see him more on the page, especially with his best friend Jeff, the girl dog. Such a cute little pup.
Tropes you will find;
🤝Second Chance 🤝Single Mom 🤝Secret Child (with a twist) 🤝Rough around the edges but gentle with her MMC 🤝Family Bonds 🤝First Love 🤝Adorable Dog
Make sure you check the trigger warnings before reading, as there are talks/memories of child abuse, alcoholic parent, cheating in the past, etc.
Heart wrenching at times, beautiful others. This was such an emotional story that took both Baxter and Maggie through a world of hurt to come out on the other side anew. Both leaving their hometown where the memories of the past were too painful Maggie finally comes home, Bax not far behind her. With a son he had no clue about Bax must navigate fatherhood and the need to have Maggie back in his arms. Will Maggie’s forgiveness, the memories and a shock revelation destroy everything they are starting to build? Loved the characters and this deeply emotional story.
This beautifully written second chance romance pulls you in with two tortured main characters whose tragic pasts will break your heart and then slowly piece it back together. The emotional depth, the slow-burn tension, and the powerful reunion between the characters had me completely hooked. It’s o story through their journey of healing, redemption, and love. ❤️
Thank you to the author for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
First time reading a book by this author and I will be back for more, plus I love a good Canadian story! 🇨🇦
The pain, the struggles, the damage… so much to overcome and so worth the fight!
I definitely cried a few times and their story was just beautiful! Very well written & I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a second chance & some emotional healing ❤️🩹
This book, my goodness it broke my heart, pieced it together again, broke it again and then healed it once again. It was such a good book, and this author is such a fabulous writer. Her books are written with so so much emotion and I’m here for it. Maggie and Baxter’s story is emotional from the start. I literally could not put this down. It definitely brought the tears, the smiles and the awe’s. Do yourself a favor and grab this one. It’s such a great read.
I've been seeing the ads for Jenny's book and knew I needed to read this first. I'm disappointed in myself for not reading it sooner! Baxter and Maggie endured a lot at the hands of Baxter's father as did Jenny. The heartbreak they all feel is palpable and I'm so glad Baxter and Maggie got their second chance asking along with Corwin...and Jeff!! I only hope Jenny gets the same opportunity with Deacon. Love the mateship Baxter has with Miller in particular. Highly recommended read.
One of the better second chance romance books I’ve read. She left when she was pregnant, he left because he was in trouble. Ten years later they’re back in the same small town where it all started. Trust is a hard thing to get back but Maggie and Baxter fight to get it back and to get back together again. They have a son and a dog. And in the end they have a family. Good read.
Oh how Devin Sloane can pull me into a romance book. I think I fell for Baxter in Chapter One! The surprise baby trope is not on my list of favs, but this one had me feeling all the feels. If you're looking for a good cry and a great romance (can you say steamy???) then this book checks all the boxes. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Devin is a new to me author so this is my first book of hers I've read. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed. Her characters are full of life, multi dimensional and relatable. The story itself (no spoilers) brought me to tears a number of times but also gave me reason to smile. Get the book, follow her, support her...she's awesome. I can't wait to read more of her stories.
From bleeding hearts to surprise revelations, Sloane pushes emotions to the limit. The Locksmith's Promise is a love story interrupted. Maggie and Baxter take the heart on a trek through the past to a chance for the future. Food for thought that tugs at the heartstrings with captivating force.
Devon has given us a story that is beautifully written and will have your emotions wrecked. Maggie and Bax are some of the best written characters I have come across. Their story is heartbreaking and so emotional.
A must read!!!! You’ll love the characters, as well as this well written story. It’s an emotional journey. So if you like books that make you feel like you are on a roller coaster. This one is for you.
Tropes: Small town, single mom, second chance, surprise baby
If you love an emotional second chance romance, then you need this book in your life. Usually, you get the heartache from one of the MCs, but Devin Sloane had to throw a double whammy at us and give it to us from both sides! I think Baxter's story touched me more, though. The pain and struggles he went through...you couldn't be mad at him about anything. If I'm being honest, I was maybe a touch annoyed with Maggie in the beginning...probably just because Baxter really broke my damn heart and all my feels were for him. The love and healing that this story thrives on is just so heartwarming. And not just between Baxter and Maggie, but through friends as well as other family members. It was such a beautiful thing. As always, Devin gives us a phenomenal story and everyone should read it! You can thank me later!
