The Lady Was Lying

Rate this book
On the eve of her sister’s debut, Belinda promises her brother she won’t lure a gentleman into a compromising position. Succeeding only because the stranger she encounters in the garden refuses to kiss her, she can’t help but worry that she’s lost her allure.

Already hiding a scandalous secret, James resists the gorgeous woman he meets in the moonlight. Determined to uphold his honor and marry well, he futilely explains that he cannot risk engaging in a casual dalliance.

Unable to forget the sting of rejection, Belinda finds herself seeking James’ attention. As one encounter becomes another, she can’t help but wonder why she can’t get him off her mind. Is it because he said no? Or because he is the one?

The Lady was Lying is the third novel in the Greydon series. It features a lady who has never felt passion and a duke who is fascinated by her. While it can be read as a standalone, Belinda is a prominent character in the first two books and readers may appreciate reading the series in order so they can fully grasp the relationship Belinda has with her family.

I began reading romance novels in high school. Julie Garwood, Judith McNaught, Jude Deveraux, Amanda Quick and Johanna Lindsay were the first authors I loved. I have always devoured historical romance, but I also enjoy contemporary romance. In recent years, I have embraced sports romance (because it combines two of my favorite things: sports and love stories!).

I am an ex-collegiate volleyball player with an undergraduate degree in history, a former elementary school teacher, and the mother of three daughters. My husband and I spend our free time transporting our girls to dance rehearsals, bantering about sports, and eating entirely too much Mexican food.

I really enjoyed the first book of this series The Earl Was Wrong and then actively disliked the second book, specifically the FMC. I was worried Belle had given me another intolerable FMC this time around, but she reversed course and I ended up enjoying this book.

Belinda had a rough debut season, where she got a well-earned reputation for kissing and more with whomever at the drop of a hat. She's been rusticated until Jane's season here years later, and is supposed to be on her best behavior to not eff it up for her sister. So here's the thing, why can't this 24 year old show even the teensiest bit of self control? For the first half of the book, we hear that "she would hate herself if she spoiled Jane's debut" and yet she immediately does what she explicitly promised her brother she wouldn't do and goes looking for trouble. "Society events had always brought out the worst in her, and the urge to misbehave had flared to life as soon as the first matron stepped through the doors." She's not a teen in her first season, she's actively endangering her sister's prospects (her sister wants to get married pronto). Like get some self-discipline.

Frankly Belinda seemed awful. She meets James in the garden and gets super insulted that he won't kiss her, a total stranger, on demand. Then proceeds to act in really selfish ways for weeks. Her sister-in-law who is on page described as the nicest person in the family has a revelation and could use family support, Belinda can't be bothered to show up for her. She repeatedly propositions (and puts hands on) James even though no means no Belinda. She makes out with randos out of spite and tells him about it, then is insulted when he makes any judgements. She literally tells her brother she's going to behave and hours later courts major scandal. Jane speaks for us all when she says "I do not know why you insist on believing you cannot control yourself."

So anyway, Belle recons it all later by having it be due to their neglectful mother, and she kind of turns it around? I don't know why her sister-in-law didn't have the talk with her years ago that if she doesn't find happiness kissing randos, maybe the solution is to find someone you like v. keep repeating a failed experiment? Why does her mother's advice carry so much weight when she's the last person she wants to emulate? IDK.

Oh yeah, James is also there. He's nice and honorable in the beginning, he's nice and honorable in the end. He has some Family Secrets to deal with and he does with no drama or fuss. He has to do some creative thinking to end up in his HEA with Belinda, and frankly, if it's that much work to get what you want with someone, maybe....she's not the right person? "She would have fought with herself for weeks. Months. Possibly years. She was too stubborn to admit that she had been hasty when she'd said she would never marry him." Like this is her not bemoaning this fact, this is her just being like, yep, that's my personality! I'm a person who can't control my most momentary urge even though the repercussions would be really bad for my family I love, and who can't be bothered to support them if I don't want to even a tiny amount, and who would rather die alone than admit I might have been speaking off the cuff so other people have to contort themselves to accommodate me!

I know Belle is writing her FMCs as strong-willed and independent thinkers (even if I think they go too far). I just wish she would spend a little more time exploring the relationship and the evolution that takes someone from thinking only of themselves to being a good partner. The family dynamics in this series is entertaining, and again, the first book of this series was great.

Thank you to the author for the arc.

This was my first book by this author, but I definitely have to read the first two! This one was really intriguing, even if the story is quite simple. But I really loved both main characters, also because I’m particularly fond of stern, respectable men who fall in love with women who defy Society’s expectations and break the rules. Belinda is a wonderful character, tormented and very real, and quite different from the usual Ton debutante. I loved the writing as well.

The protagonist promises her siblings she’ll behave this season, but let’s be honest: old habits don’t disappear that easily. The hero starts off serious, carrying a family secret during his stay in London. It adds a touch of drama, but it’s not the kind of mystery that keeps the story hanging until the end — on the contrary, you quickly figure it out, the characters handle it without much fuss, and the plot doesn’t rely on it to stand.

I wouldn’t say Belinda and James fall in love at first sight — especially in her case. It feels more like a spoiled girl who didn’t get what she wanted and didn’t know how to handle James saying “no.” (No spoilers, of course!) With quick dialogues and some entertaining twists, the romance finally takes shape and reaches its resolution.

And as always, Belinda’s mother is unbearable (oh, that woman could use a slap… figuratively speaking!). In the end, I was actually more curious to read Jane’s story than fully satisfied with the main couple.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read, but I missed more character development — both individually and as a couple. The story has potential, but it stays on the surface. It’s a good book to pass the time, but it could have been much more memorable if it had explored its main characters in depth.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is the third story in the Greydon series. While you could read it as a standalone, to get some nuances of Belinda's personality and her understanding of relationships, it would be of benefit to read at least book 1 to see how her family role modeled relationships for her, and how her first Season went.

On saying that, Belinda to me is very sad, lost, and confused, seeking something but not sure if she is sure what it is, or deserving of it. She grew up witnessing her mother's influence on men and relationships, and with her mother's expectations that Belinda would be like her. But likewise, she grew up as a child to adults who were selfish in their narcissistic pursuit of pleasure and engrossed in themselves, which seems to have given her a bit of a contempt for men easily influenced by her outward beauty and sensuality. She is torn between the two sides of herself - compelled to tempt men and test them, but then disgusted when they are easily lead, and disappointed when she does not find what she is looking for - named as passion, but probably a deeper connection. As a consequence, she feels she is passionless and destined to be a spinster.

She is thrown for a loop one night, when she sneaks out of her sisters' debut ball to get some air, and runs into an intriguing stranger - but when she tries to seduce him into a kiss, she is rejected. His response is anomaly to her, and she is not sure how to take it. Especially when she discovers he is a duke, a highly eligible bachelor in search of a wife, and an honorable man who repeatedly crosses paths with her and has some unexpected connections to her family.

James has spent his life in the country, living a dutiful life, and pleasing his parents. When he finds himself inheriting the title, but jilted by his arranged fiancee, he decides to defy his mother, and travel to London to participate in the Season. His world is thrown into chaos and confusion when he meets the Greydons, especially when the incredibly attractive and sensual stranger he almost kisses in the garden turns out to be the eldest sister of the earl and countess who have suddenly turned his world upside down.

So much family angst and confusion in this story, but this story helps to shed some light into Belindas' simmering resentment in the first book and helps me to understand her sense of personal confusion. I am glad to see her come to some understanding of herself and find a man who defies her expectations, since she had so many who have appeared to fail her in the past - dishonorable men, an absent father, and a brother who appeared to abandon her. James is sweet, endearing, honorable, and steadfast. While at first he appears to reject her, he shows that he is also one who looks past the superficial and seeks something deeper and more meaningful, though he is more conscious of it than Belinda is. And it appears that while he was reserved and stoic to begin with, when James is ready to follow his heart and get what he wants, he is all in.

Sweet, with a bit of sadness, and ultimately showing that there is more than meets the eye. The family relationships are just as important to the story as the romantic relationship.

On the eve of her sister’s debut, Belinda promises her brother she won’t lure a gentleman into a compromising position. But a mysterious stranger she meets in the garden challenges her resolve. When he refuses to kiss her, she’s left questioning her charm. James, weighed down by a scandalous secret, resists Belinda to safeguard his honor and future.

Haunted by his rejection, Belinda finds herself drawn to James time and again, unsure if it’s his refusal that captivates her or if he might truly be the one.

Belle sweeps readers into an emotional roller coaster with Belinda, who is initially hard to like but undeniably compelling. Belinda’s complexity, raw honesty, and perceived brokenness stem largely from her fraught relationship with her mother. A particularly poignant conversation between them speaks volumes, giving Belinda much to consider.

The relationships with her sister Jane and her brother Sebastian are heartwarming highlights. Their unwavering support and nonjudgmental understanding provide Belinda with both comfort and clarity. Jane, astute and insightful, seems to sense that Belinda’s attraction to James is fueled by the very idea that he’s off-limits—perhaps even recognizing Belinda’s feelings before she admits them herself.

James’s unwavering honor and gentlemanly demeanor make him an irresistible counterpart to Belinda’s fiery spirit. When he finally throws caution to the wind and kidnaps Belinda, defying the consequences, their time together becomes transformative. It’s in those moments that Belinda begins to unravel her confusion, realizing she may have finally found her prince after kissing one too many frogs.

Belle’s writing is undeniably captivating. She skillfully creates richly layered, authentic characters that draw readers into their emotional journeys. Her combination of wit, charm, a touch of angst, and heartfelt moments brings the story to life, leaving a lasting impression long after the final page. I eagerly anticipate reading Jane’s story and discovering what else Belle has in store for us.

I enjoyed this slow-burn reverse grumpy-sunshine romance with its added strangers to lovers, found family, road trip and one bed tropes. The plot is very well written and full of humor, banter and a few steamy love scenes. I already knew Belinda from previous books and I didn't like her at the beginning of the story with her pouting, petty behavior and willfulness. But as the story progresses, you get to know her better and discover her depths. I liked James from the first moment, an honorable cinnamon roll hero who respects women. I really enjoyed the witty interactions between them and the way they tried to resist each other. I also find the strong bond in the extended family endearing.

After years of seclusion at the country estate, Belinda Grey returns to London to support her sister Jane in her debut. She had cut her own season short prematurely, having acquired a scandalous reputation for kissing numerous men in an attempt to discover true passion, but all experimentation left her cold. Belinda is determined to behave herself at her sister's debut ball, but she soon falls into her old pattern and asks a strange man in the garden for a kiss. But to her chagrin and annoyance, he rejects her and Belinda sets out to seduce him.
James, Duke of Avondale, has come to London for the first time to look for a wife. At his very first ball, he makes an incredible discovery and is asked to kiss a woman, but her resolute nature and his sense of honor prevent him from doing so. James' dark family secret and Belinda's persistence lead to their paths crossing again and again. But when James tries to give in to Belinda's seductive powers, she suddenly wants to set him up with her sister and he is off-limits to her...

Overall, An entertaining read that made me smile again and again after some initial irritation and which I am happy to recommend!

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

Cupid’s arrow made a detour

Belinda & James
Eldest girl, middle child of five, stubborn and spirited, Belinda made a mess of her own debut because of her mother’s (not so) good advise. Determined to do better and not ruin her sister’s debut, she promises to behave – or as much as she’s able to...
Only child James is a debutant duke; born and raised solely in the country, it’s his first London Season too – and he’s entering it with a secret... that is exposed as soon as he makes his first appearance. But will his host rat him out, or is he safe – for now?
They meet accidentally in a dark garden; no names, just the moon and a stolen kiss... except, he refuses, and she’s more than a little vexed!
She sets herself a dare to seduce him, he’s adamant she won’t, and then her sister expresses her interest...

Poor B, so confused, her feelings are all over the place... if only she could get her head and her heart aligned. And J may be slow to catch up, but steady and determined once his path becomes clear – and it only takes a bit of friendly kidnapping to convince her.

It’s refreshing to read a duke who isn’t overly confident and a lady who isn’t all butterflies and rainbows. I loved the sibling shenanigans, the found family subplot, the sneaking around, the awkward flirting, B’s brazenness and J’s befuddlement.
The ravishment was delicious, fresh and just perfect for this couple! Their chemistry was excellent even though it isn’t love at first sight. It’s banter and teasing, a bit of push and pull, sort of a frenemies-to-lovers with their wires mixed, and it works like a dream.

The story is lighthearted, humorous, and it just flows so effortlessly, but then the last part of the book picks up speed – and maybe, just maybe, that part deserved an extra chapter or three to explore its full potential.
And yes, this book fully stands on its own, but meeting B and her unusual family in the previous books will make it all the more enjoyable!

The Lady Was Lying is a quirky romance because its heroine Belinda has a unique outlook on the world. She’s an incredible beauty, but being raised by an unconventional mother led her to undertake an unconventional method to explore her interest in men: she convinced a large number of them to kiss her to see how reacted to them. The result? None of them caused the slightest feeling in her, and she left London in disgrace with a clouded reputation.

Meanwhile James, a duke, has discovered his own clouded past when he learns that his ducal father was not his biological father. It’s why his mother has kept him in the country all his life. But he decides to come to London to find a wife—which leads him to Belinda’s family and Belinda herself.

Belinda is a wild character, one who today I’d say is on the autism spectrum in terms of how she expresses herself to her family and to others and in terms of some of the decisions she makes. James is relatively inexperienced with women and has difficulty identifying his feelings because of that. So how the heck these two are ever going to navigate the paths of love is the core of The Lady Was Lying.

I’ll be honest—it took me a long time to warm to Belinda, mainly because she seemed to be her own worst enemy, with her actions contradicting her words. But Belle takes her time exploring what a spark between two people really means. Belinda’s family is a bit too good to be true in their treatment of her, but that’s nicely counterbalanced by James’ mother, whose panic in her deep dark secret being discovered by society is palpable.

I liked The Lady Was Lying, but it me took a while to get there. So the heroine time. She might grow on you just as she does on James. This is a 3 ½ star read rounded up to 4 for the quality of the writing.

Like the previous book in the Greydon series, I wish this was longer and we had more time to see Belinda and James develop feelings and their undeniable attraction toward each other in the context of the season. Given both their insecurities and the secrets they keep to face with speculation with an unbothered air I think it would have been very nice to see them feel turbulent and figure out how to navigate their new feelings with their ingrained habits. I was glad there was a bonus epilogue to set up the next book instead of taking over the main couple’s epilogue but even with that extra bit overall this felt like an underdeveloped story, especially considering the high hopes I had for Belinda specifically. I’m glad she got her HEA but in all honesty it didn’t feel earned considering the despair she has felt over the last 2 books.

I also felt like the relationships between our MCs and their respective mothers felt like wasted potential ending on a rather anticlimactic note. Especially James’ mother - considering the severity of her fear of scandal and the gravity of the secret she had kept from him, their final interaction didn’t feel in line with the slow progress of their relationship we saw once they came to London. Belinda’s interactions with her mother and her actions in this novel also felt a little trite and like there was an intent to tie the mother up in a neat bow and justify her behavior despite years of emotional neglect which didn’t sit well with me.

Brit Belle is a good writer and the stories remain interesting so this is still a 3 star for me - but I miss the magic of her debut novel and hope the next 2 installments in the series will be able to recapture it.

First I wanted to give it more stars for the Hero but…..Belinda!

So Belinda believes she is broken! She has been given horrible advice from her mother! Belinda longs for passion and to feel “something”!

Enter James, the Duke of Avondale who resists Belinda right away even though Belinda promised to behave during Jane’s come out ball!

Belinda it seems gets bored easily and she sees James on a frigid night in their garden! But James is an honorable Duke! Kissing has to mean something and they are not courting! They don’t even have a proper introduction!

Belinda thinks her charms are flailing so she kissed another total stranger! He is very aroused but Belinda feels nothing!

With the number of men she has kissed it’s a wonder she should be walking, kissing scandal!

Sebastian shields her as much as he can because they all witnessed their mother’s promiscuity and it has affected their relationship with themselves and their spouses!

James has a secret and he questions his life especially why the secret was held from him!

The interaction and attraction seem very stilted! Their “love” came too quick!

Belinda seems she wants to stamp her feet like a small child! It appears her attraction to James is the one who walked away! She frustrated and it takes some honest conversation with her mother for!

James is everything a book boyfriend should be and moore!

Belinda she is not a robot so it does seem she is human and just wants to feel something!

James knows something is wrong but he continues the path of “love” not sure of what this is either! Belinda is not just rich and charming she’s spoilt but does have compassion! Can’t wait for the next one! Bravo

Belinda has promised to behave appropriately and avoid any further scandal on the eve of her sister's debut. On the night in question, she meets James and is desperate to have him kiss her, despite her promise. He politely refused her and thus begins her fascination with the newcomer. James has his own scandalous secret and is keen for it to remain a secret. Somehow the pair seem to find themselves alone on several occasions, often at the instigation of Belinda, and they come to know each other a little better each time. Could this be the one for her to discover she can experience passion?

This was an enjoyable read and it delves quite a lot into the complex character of Belinda, who feels nothing when she kisses another and feels defective. Meanwhile, James has recently discovered that his father is not the one known to him but another. And he meets some of his family at his ball, purely by chance as he is the spitting image of his biological father. Both of the characters are likeable and sympathetic, and one can't help cheering them on as the proceed in their current efforts.

I must admit I haven't read the previous books in the series but felt able to follow along quite well with the story. It does pique my curiosity to know what came before and perhaps I will follow up and read further in the future.

Overall, it was a really good read. I thank Booksirens and the writer for providing an advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I saw this novel somewhere on social media and decided to give the new-to-me author a try. I am very glad I did as I ended up enjoying the story immensely and will be reading the rest of the series. The book is very well written and very well paced, engaging throughout, and, in my opinion, of perfect length for the story it told. I never felt bored or restless while reading and finished the whole thing in one sitting.

Belinda considers herself to be a bit of tart, having kissed nearly thirty men in the hope that she would feel the spark, but it never came. James is a duke who was raised in the country for reasons that get uncovered early in the book, and is now in London in search of a wife. When he runs into Belinda at a ball and she asks him to kiss her, he is the first man to ever refuse her, doing so because of his principles and despite being attracted to her. As the two remain in each other's orbit and get to know each other better (banter is very well written, fun and natural), their mutual attraction grows. Belinda realizes (there's a whole angle with her mother) that she needs emotional connection before physical passion (these days we might call her demisexual) and she and James eventually ride into the sunset.

I'm very glad to have read this book and look forward to reading more from the author.

Thank you to BookSirens for this e-ARC, and a chance to read a new author to me.

I am an easy sell on a Regency era romance, so this one was a quick yes for me! Sidebar, the cover is great! We love to see authors and publishers moving this genre of romance into a new era of covers ;) This book took me a solid 50% to get fully invested, but I'm glad I stayed for the full read. The premise of the plot and the backstories for both Belinda and James were very good. When considering why it was that it took me so long to buy in, I think it just came down to struggling to feel any true tension between them. I think my personal preferences came into play, and I like my fictional dukes to be a little more commanding in their personalities. Having said that, I didn't create these characters, and the author is free to see her dukes however she prefers them :)

I will give another book in the Greydon series a read, and recommend this one if you like a cinnamon roll Duke.

This book was really good. I have liked all of the books that I have read by Britt Belle. In The Lady Was Lying, we read the story of Belinda and James. Belinda is an older, single lady who had a "difficult" season a few years back and didn't want to try again. James was in an arranged marriage situation, but released the woman of her obligation when she fell in love with another. There was backstory to both MCs but there wasn't much character development. The interactions between the two really made me like James but I wasn't always enthralled with Belinda. In the end third, we meet Belinda's mother, and she sheds some light as to why Belinda has the views she has on love and marriage but I wanted more. I also think this book is hard to classify as far as segregated genres. It isn't quite historical romance and it isn't contemporary romance, but a very liberal, open-minded historical romance?

Thank you for the copy, this is my honest opinion. Please be aware of any trigger warnings, as your mental health is most important.

If you like push and pull and angst and a woman going after what she wants (she’s looking for passion with a kiss) and not finding it and an upright, proper gentleman who is looking for a wife then THIS book is for you!
Belinda meets James in the garden and corners him for a kiss which he refuses to do. James walks away and sends Belinda in a tailspin.
They keep meeting at different functions and Belinda realizes that she is starting to feel something when she is around James and wants to confirm this improbability.
Finally, they both figure out this spark between them.
There is heat comes later in the book with lots and lots of banter and a nosey sister. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the pages turned quickly well into the night!
This is the third book in the series but I didn’t read the first two and didn’t feel lost at all. But if you have read the books, you will love seeing characters from the previous book!

I really liked this historical romance featuring a scandalous lady (she's been looking for the man who will knock her socks off by kissing literally anyone willing to kiss her back) and a starchy duke with a potential scandal in his future.

Belinda is trying to Be Good this season as she supports her younger sister's debut. But even though she WANTS to behave, she can't seem to help herself. James is the only man who can resist her charms, which makes him an irresistible target for her. But then her sister admits he's the man she has her eye on, so Belinda knows she has to mend her ways, and that James is off limits.

But maybe Jane, her sister, just knows that Belinda can't admit that James is different UNLESS he's off limits ... and maybe, as James and Belinda get to know each other, he'll understand that she needs a way to be with him without admitting she wants to be.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

Well written, full of secrets, love, romance, society, mystery, lies, twists and kidnapping. James is the Duke of Avondale who wants to head to London for his first season. He thinks it's time to look for a wife to start a family for love and not convenience. His mother doesn't want him to go but refuses to tell him why. When he decides to leave , she goes with him. At his first ball, the hostess, Countess Emmaline thinks he looks just like her father. James states that he doesn't know him at all. He then talks to his mother to find out what happened years ago. The Earl and Lord Danford show up and talk to him. James also has meet a woman at the ball and then again at Emmaline's home- Lady Belinda. They continue to bump into each other and the sparks start. Round and round they go till he kidnaps her. has lots of everything you need to keep turning the pages. Would strongly recommend this book.

I received this book and leave this unbiased, honest review.

4.5 - Despite not reading the two prior books, this was excellent! It was well-written so it was not necessary to have read the previous ones.

This is pretty much what I'm looking for in romance novels - a spicy FMC, a partner interest that likes her contrary ways, and some fun side characters. There were a lot of healthy family moments that were great, not everyone has to be difficult and it was nice to have that.

I would have enjoyed a little bit more development in our lovers relationship - just a few more moments of tension/connection between them.
There was not a crazy or dramatic plot device in this story, but I found that kind of refreshing. It almost went into cozy-read vibes due to this, which I'm totally down for.

I will definitely check out the other books in this series to learn more about the other ladies and gentlemen in the family!

Belinda, Belinda, Belinda! What an awesome, complex character! I was immediately intrigued and I told my DH this book was gonna be a banger. Then I became irritated but also captivated at her thought process. I loved her because she is so honest but also at the same time thought she was making a mistake. She took me on a journey!! Talk about someone who is NOT a one dimensional character. That girl has layers and all of them provoke some kind of reaction.

James was adorable and honorable. I love good guys and James is one of the best. Poor guy started out with whiplash called "Belinda", but he figured it out. These are two perfectly paired people. And very, very hot together. LORDY.

Anyway, I'm ready for Jane's book next year. On y va! Let's gooo!

Thank you to Britt Belle for the copy of this book. Opinions are my own.

A charming, slow-burn Regency romance with just the right mix of longing and restraint. The story follows Belinda, a heroine questioning her own desirability after a rare rejection, and James, a duke determined to do the honorable thing—even when temptation is standing right in front of him. Their moonlit encounters are filled with tension, wit, and unspoken desire, making every meeting feel meaningful.

I loved the role reversal here: a lady intrigued by a man who says no, and a hero whose self-control only makes him more fascinating. The romance unfolds gently, with emotional depth and plenty of yearning. While it works as a standalone, if you’re a longtime reader of this series you will especially enjoy seeing Belinda step into the spotlight. A completely satisfying read!

The third book in The Greydon Series, The Lady Was Lying, was a real rollercoaster of emotions. Between Belinda’s “problem” and James’s determined search, the story pulled me in with its mix of drama, mystery, heartfelt moments, and a whole lot of tension.
Britt Belle’s writing flows so well that I found myself reading with genuine interest. The world and characters felt alive, even though some parts moved a bit slowly. Belinda, in particular, could be frustrating at times, but that made her feel more real, and I also felt there should have been more in the last chapter.
Overall, it was an enjoyable and engaging addition to the Greydon series which made me glad that I picked it up.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I loved Belinda's brashness, especially towards James. His reaction to her early advances made me laugh. With each meeting between James and Belinda, their attraction grew and the sexual tension was at an all time high! It was like a stalemate between them. Who would flinch first?? She wanted to avoid him ,because of their increasing attractions. Sebastián was the perfect brother. He protected and supported her, even if he thought she was wrong. James's schemed to outwit Belinda.

Who will win this love battle? A very entertaining and captivating story. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

A great read , this is the third book of the series . Lady Belinda is a young woman who is smart and knows what she wants from her life and what she wants in a man . She may have kissed many men but she hasn't felt anything and she believes she will end up spinster . James, Duke of Avondale is looking for a wife but when Belinda is trying to kiss him and he refuses she is determined to seduce him but he is a truly gentleman . With every time they meet their attraction is making it for them more difficult to resist to the pull they feel about each other .

this had that element that I enjoyed from the previous two books in the Greydon series. It had that historical romance element that I was hoping for and used the regency concept that I was wanting and enjoyed how it was used in this. The characters were so well written and enjoyed the way they were used in this universe and how they felt like real people and how they worked in the time-period. The overall concept was so well done and enjoyed the way the romance element worked in this. Britt Belle wrote this so well and had that element that I was wanting and glad I was able to read this concept.

This book was okay. The FMC was unfortunately not likeable. She's dishonest, promises her brother one thing and turns around and breaks her promise, she's selfish, courting scandal when her sister is debuting, she's aggressive, attacking James by touching him etc... even when he does not want it and she's just spoilt with no self control. Well, that about sums my dislike for this woman.

The book itself was kind of on a cruise control. It did delve deep into the connection between Belinda and James and how their relationship evolved.

This book surprised me in the best way. It’s a slow-burn, grumpy-sunshine romance with witty banter, found family warmth, and just the right amount of spice. Belinda is messy, stubborn, and delightfully unpredictable but I was completely rooting for her. James, meanwhile, is the kind of respectful, soft-hearted duke that makes you melt. Their chemistry builds slowly and beautifully, and the humor sprinkled throughout kept me smiling.

Belinda is more than just a handful—she’s a force of nature. I often found myself feeling sorry for the men in her life, yet at the same time completely captivated by her wit and determination. Her dynamic with James made this my favorite story in the series so far. Both characters face very real struggles, and it’s easy to connect with their journeys on an emotional level.

What really stood out to me was the way the author explored how parental influence can shape a child’s behavior and future—an added layer of depth that made the romance even more compelling. Grey’s family situation is nothing short of complicated, adding further intrigue to the overall plot.

The Lady Was Lying is a wonderful continuation of the series: heartfelt, engaging, and full of character-driven drama. If you enjoy historical romance with strong heroines, witty banter, and layered family dynamics, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

A charming story and pleasant read. The heroine has a lot to work through about herself, she is not her reputation and the hero is intrigued enough to help her. Two unique characters that belong together. I enjoyed the story but prefer novels that include more period details.

The love story of Belinda and James. It’s a very good book. Belinda is complicated and thinks she’s broken. James has secrets. This book draws you in and keeps you there. I love how this story unfolded and they fell in love almost at first and didn’t realize it. James was determined and they got their HEA.

Operating from an advice that doesn’t really apply to her, she concluded she was broken until she met him and both went on a journey of discovery amidst potential scandal. Lovely read!
