Rough Around the Hedges

Rate this book
He’s the city boy who wants to destroy the place she loves most.
She’s the countryside girl who is determined to break him first.
But when hearts are involved, can either of them truly win?

I, Rose Matthews, have always considered myself a perfectly reasonable person.
Until the day Oliver de Havilland—the hottie I wham, bam, thank you ma’am’d two weeks ago—shows up at Hanbury Allotments and hands me a closure notice. In two months, he’s going to shut down the place I love the most—the very place that keeps the dwindling community of our village alive.
Long story short; I’m ready to riot.
Riot. Protest. Run naked through the village centre with nothing but lettuce leaves covering my lady bits. You know, the usual.
The new Duke of Hanbury is as arrogant as the last, but there’s no way I’m going to let him get away with this. Especially not since his plan is to sell the land to make way for more cookie-cutter housing nobody wants.

This is more than a battle of wits—it’s a war, and a dirty one at that.
But I won’t lose.
Because if Oliver didn’t want to play dirty, he shouldn’t have roughed up a gardener...

She’s baaaaack! Emma Hart has a new book and I’m all for it. Rough around the Hedges is freaking hilarious. Rose, not to be mixed up with Rosie is a gardening legend around Hanbury. She’ll help you practice your saucy plant jokes, tend to your best veg and keep you on the narrow path to growing success…. That is until her beloved allotment comes under fire.

The Duke of Hanbury is looking to sell the land that the allotment is built on. He wants to give way to a new housing development, but the Hanbury allotment committee won’t go down without a fight.

This is a fun enemies to lovers or should I say lovers to enemies and back. It has all the charm you’d expect from an Emma Hart book and all the laughs too.

Ms Hart is back with a vengeance with her latest witty story with a veritable crazy character Rose in Rough around the hedges!
This book is really quite out there entertainment wise! Highly quirky storyline and characters that take the cake, pun very much intended!
This book is quite the breath of fresh air too!
Rose and His Grace aka Oliver are such opposites you can cut the sizzling argumentative tension with a knife, oh yes another pun intended!
Im all for British humour and this had it in spades! I bloody loved it!
Definitely a favourite and I highly recommend you pick it up!!

This book was kindly sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

When your no-name hook-up is the new duke trying to evict you…

After years of estrangement from his grandfather, Oliver de Havilland is back in Hanbury to finally take on his new role as Duke of Hanbury. He's ready to modernise the dukedom, starting off by selling portions of land to help keep the estate in the black. And first on the chopping block is the Hanbury Allotments, which are the heart of the community. Head of the Allotments committee Rose Matthews is ready to fight to keep the Allotments, her happy place, and she's ready to show Oliver just how important they are to the community. But there's a slight road bump - her and Oliver hooked up two weeks before his arrival in town and it was the best night of both their lives. There's chemistry bubbling beneath the surface, but that surface is wrapped up in the drama that comes with Rose's attempts to get under Oliver's skin in some of the most outrageous ways, including running naked through the village wearing nothing but lettuce leaves. It's not just the Allotments on the line, but hearts as well.

Emma Hart, how I've missed you! While I'm glad she took a step back from writing instead of forcing out stories she wasn't happy with, I am SO happy to have a fresh Emma Hart book to devour, especially an Aristoverse romance! There is just something about Emma's writing that sucks you into the lives of these characters like a big warm hug of comedy and heart.

The personalities of Hanbury are an absolute RIOT, led by gardening legend Rose (who may or may not have a cell at the local gaol named after her), and every single character is an absolute joy to read about. As always, Emma is able to so easily balance the romance, friendships, and family relationships of the village, to the point that I could totally read a book about the village shenanigans sans romance - it really is that fun! Honestly, I forgot how much I LOVE the Aristoverse and this little world Emma has slowly created and fleshed out.

But of course, we're here for the romance and Emma certainly delivers with Rose and Oliver! Enemies-to-lovers is always a fun romance trope, and there was so much flirty banter and chemistry between these two. There's a great balance between the sweet, swoony and somewhat spicy moments, and the back-and-forth quick-witted banter. Oliver and Rose are very much opposites attract that just click.

If you're new to Emma's Aristoverse, there's no better time to dive in! Aside from the original trilogy, the books can be read in any order (although I am a bit of a stickler when it comes to reading companion novel series in order, so I definitely recommend reading them in publication order). Outside of the original trilogy, the rest of the books are very loosely connected, with small Easter eggs and cameos popping up when you least expect it, so you won't feel lost if you read them at random. If you enjoy regency romances for the aristocracy but want a modern twist, these books are definitely for you!

Romance girlies, don't miss this fabulous rom-com romp in the British countryside!

Welcome back to the writing world Emma!

I have missed Emma's humour in backs and was very excited to have a light hearted, laugh out loud story to sink into and Emma did not disappoint. Rough Around the Hedges was funny, goofy and absolutely crazy! I laughed so much at some of the antics the characters go up to.

Rose and Oliver's relationship literally started with a bang, but when they meet again, he is very much the enemy when he decides to sell the town's allotments, which are a huge part of Rose's life.
Rose and Oliver are complete opposites with her being absolutely crazy and with a bit of a reputation as the town loon, although her heart was always in the right place, and Oliver being very reserved. Somehow though they just fitted together and his reactions to her crazy antics were brilliant and definitely brought a lot of humour to the story.

Whilst I did enjoy the story and the characters, I did find Rose to be a bit too much for the first half of the book. Some of her reactions I felt were a bit unrelatable and it felt like her character was trying too much to be crazy and sarcastic. However, when we began to see her softer side come as she fell for Oliver, I felt her character changed, she was still quirky and a bit crazy but it was toned down enough that it made her completely relatable and less annoying.
The side characters were brilliant, as expected with Emma's books they brought plenty banter and hysterics.

Overall, this was a very fun, light hearted read that is an absolute must if you're an Emma Hart fan.

It's been a long time since the author released a new book so I was very excited to hear that there was a new book coming out. There's just something about the story that draws you in. I loved the fun banter between the two lead characters that had me laughing out loud but also the side characters were such a delight to read about. I was hoping for a happy ending but next to the funny moments, there were also the heartfelt times that my heart was falling for. Another great read!

When Rose and her community learns that the new owner wants to sell the area that their Allotments are on, she realises that they all have a fight on their hands that won't be easy to win but she'll do whatever it takes to hopefully change the Duke's mind. When she sees who the new Duke is, it appears they have met each other before but under circumstances neither really want to relive. Oliver starts to realise that it won't be easy to sell the Allotments but while he's trying to reason with Rose, it's not an easy task. While he's slowly figuring out why everyone is against the sale, there's a side he sees in Rose that might change his mind but there's still a long way to go. Will it all work out in the end? And will Rose give Oliver a chance?...

***5 ‘Wotten Bastard’ Stars***

This was a really fun read filled with crazy, unique characters, laugh out loud moments and moments that will keep you on your toes and make your heart melt.

I adored Rose. She is a force to be reckoned with, has a really good heart and totally owns all that she is. Oliver…well…it took a while for me to get to where I liked him and in the end, I can say that I liked him, but to use a British term ~ he was a wanker throughout most of the book.
They definitely had an interesting and unique “courtship”. They are opposites in practically every way and on paper, shouldn’t work, but they did. Their journey was all kinds of enjoyable and I loved how things worked out in the end.

I’m going to be a broken record and say yet again, this was a fun read. The inhabitants of Hanbury ~ all of them whether they were two legged, for legged, furry or feathery ~ were a hoot!
I loved their antics and how they rallied around those they cared about. Isa and Eleanor were my fav two legged ones, but I have to admit that I really liked everyone and wouldn’t mind seeing them in future books.

What a seriously fun read! If you have ever read a book by Emma Hart, this has all the things that you know and love in it - a feisty main character, fun loving animals, spirited older people and loyal friends. Combine all of these things and you have a fun loving read that will have you laughing out loud!

Rose is a quick witted always ready with a comeback woman. She does landscaping and is head of the town allotments that mean so much to this small town. She is so passionate that she even has a jail cell that they refer to as her "time out" space.
Oliver is the new Duke of Hanbury. He's young, arrogant, sexy beyond belief and someone Rose hooked up with two weeks ago and ran out on him while he was in the shower. Rose had no idea who he was at that time.
Oliver comes into town and immediately tells Rose that he's shutting down the allotments and selling them. She won't go down without a fight and boy, will this book keep you on your toes with how she fights.
A seriously fun read!

This book was wildly adorable! I adore a small town, and even more so a small town with a cast of characters that are lovingly eccentric & supportive.

Rose and Oliver are what we could basically describe as opposites. After a random night together with no identifying information exchanged, their discovery of who each other really is causes a bit of a ruckus - especially since it seems that Oliver is set on taking away her town's gardening plots.

Throughout this story I found myself laughing out loud, connecting with this town and its inhabitants, and also falling in love with this story.

"A life here, a life there ... The only life I want is one where she's in it - one where she's smiling. Even if she rejects me, I won't change my mind and sell the land. I know how beautiful her smile is, and I would never forgive myself if I'm the reason she loses it. I want to give her a reason to smile. Even if the smiles aren't for me when this is all said and done, then it's fine. The fact she still has it will be enough for me."

Rose’s life revolves around the Hanbury Allotments - it’s her happy place. The organizing, the planting, even planning things at the nursery school for the children.

Oliver is the new Duke of Hanbury and plans to sell off the allotments so housing can be built and he can use the profits to help keep up his family’s estate.

The big surprise, however, when they meet face to face over the announcement is that they were a one night stand! And now, according to Rose, they are mortal enemies.

Rose plans to drive Oli crazy by making his life a living hell to get him to change his mind. Oli weirdly finds that her stunts are like flirting. He can’t seem to get enough of Rose’s crazy. And, she has way more feelings for the Duke of Hanbury than she would like to admit

Rough Around the Hedges is really fun. The banter is incredible! It’s super quirky and adorable. And, there are lots of emotional moments too, making this romantic comedy a lovely mix of all the things I adore in a book! 4 stars!

Favorite Quotes:

It was truly surprising how many people were interested in a calendar of naked people covering their wobbly bits with their homegrown vegetables. The internet was a strange place.

“How else should I put it?” I replied. “That we engaged in coitus? Partook in premarital activities?” He stared at me. “Tossed the hotdog down the hallway,” Isa offered. I snapped my fingers in her direction. “Did the bedtime slip’n’slide.” “Planted the parsnip.” “Fed the kitty.” “Stuffed the taco.” “Buried the bone.” “Slammed the ham.” I paused. “Why are all your sex euphemisms food- related?”

Oli, this woman is two colours short of a rainbow.

Maybe Eleanor de Havilland had a few screws loose. Well, even if she did, she was in good company. I barely had any screws, much less loose ones.

Always ask for someone’s name before you do the dance with no pants.

Put your fishing pole away. There are no compliments here for you to catch.

… she was practically running this town like a mafia lord now. The woman was a master of deceit— everyone thought she was a kind, sweet lady always willing to lend a hand, but she was actually a rabid bull who had no qualms about breaking down a door or two to get what she wanted.

My Review:

I adore this author, Emma Hart is da bomb! I have gleefully giggle-snorted my way through every book of hers that I’ve been lucky enough to source. Her well-honed tales are laced together with clever wit, keen snark, and sharp visuals that dance through my gray matter while featuring authentically quirky characters that I enjoy getting to know. I can’t wait to see what she conjures next.

This was cute!

As per usual, we have two fairly relatable characters (even if one *is* a duke) with a supporting cast of sometimes-helpful BFFs, a little less helpful group of feisty older people, and not some helpful at all but quirky animals in a story that is also slightly OTT with the goofiness (and a little more OTT with the reason for the black moment) but of course brings it all together for a lovely finish. An altogether fun read for the start of summer :)

Enemies to lovers with a side of she uses a hot pink s3x toy to do WHAT?, Rough Around the Hedges is in the same universe as the author's other recent romcoms set in the UK, but since the previous characters pretty much just get a shout out here, it's a perfectly acceptable place to start reading.

I absolutely loved this story. Rose and Oliver are so much fun together. Yes Rose is a bit crazy, but her heart is in the right place. So sometimes she needs a time out but its for a good reason why shes there. I wish I had waffles as a therapist too. When she pulled out that pink thing, I knew exactly what she was gonna do at first. This book had me hysterical. The banter, the friends, the animals, just everything. The only time I got mad & sad was at the end cause I'm greedy, wanted more, & didnt want it to be over lol. I really hope we see more of these crazy, loving characters! Another great read added to my favs!

This was a cute story. Rose was a little over the top, but really it just fits her. It is truly who she is. I mean, she does have her own time out area aka a jail cell. Oliver is the exact opposite, much more reserved compared to Rose.

Rose and Oliver were fun. They had great banter and they had me laughing out loud throughout the story and their journey to a happily ever after. Of course, there are some bumps along the way.

The whole support of characters was also enjoyable.

If you’re looking for an enemies to lovers, rom com check this one out.

This book has me laughing out loud! I loved Rose and her shenanigans, she was one crazy character I will gladly read again. Her and Oliver could not have been more different, he was so polished And she was a gardener, happy to be dirty. These two will have you laughing throughout the chapters and will finally make you happy with their hea. But Rose and her shenanigans will never stop, she's literally the best.

Am so excited for everyone to read this book. The author has done what she does best great banter between the characters and with sexual tension. Oliver inherits a title and makes decisions that cause complications in the local community. In comes Rose Matthews hard working and local sweetheart of chaos. I loved all the dynamics between the characters and the relationship Rose has with her chickens. A light read and highly recommend.

I haven’t laughed so hard while reading a book in a while. Hands down I think Rose is my favourite character this author has written. She is an absolute riot. The way her mind works & her witty banter?! So freaking good. The tension & banter back & forth between Oliver & Rose was next level good! Plus all the side characters who were just a quirky & fun as you’d expect. I laughed, gasped & just had a good feeling the entire time I read this book. Hilarious & fun from start to finish!

It’s been much too long since we’ve had a romantic comedy from Emma Hart. Just goes to show that some things never change and that includes her witty banter, hilarious side characters, and the love story. Rose and the Duke … what may have been a one-time event turns into enemies who have only one thing in common. I can never get enough of Mrs. Hart’s stories. She’s the mastermind behind some of my favorite books, and I can’t wait to see what she brings us next!

This book is hilarious. Rose and Oliver had a passionate night, memorable and perfect, until the meet again and he becomes enemy number 1. I love how these two can't stay away from each other even tho they are supposed enemies. Love the gang of seniors, Rose's family and best friends, and Oliver's mom is amazing.
Made me laugh and certainly enjoyed the ride.

I can't lie, I laughed my way through this one. Emma Hart's titles tend to be on the funny side, which I enjoy as the British humour (see what I did there?) is amusing, the characters are great, and the stories she tell make me feel like I am reading about people I could know in real life.

Rose and Oliver are wonderful. She is absolutely a loon with her own jail cell (ahem, a time out area) and he is more formal and at first sees her as only a thorn in his plans.

I thought the balance of the characters, and of them figuring out that they actually liked one another was fun. Oliver's reactions to her, and to her silliness, actually not only was a balance for her, but it also balanced her for the reader. Yes, she was a little nutty. But it was endearing and it was funny.

I enjoyed and recommend this title.
