Sakamoto Shin'ichi (坂本眞一) is a Japanese mangaka. He is mostly famous for his series Innocent and Innocent Rouge. He is currently working on #DRCL midnight children based on the classic by Bram Stoker.
I think the scene of the execution is among the best that I have ever read. Everything was made even more captivating by Little Marie. I adored the Bach musical reference. I was transported to a feeling of pleasure by this scene, which was both sad and beautiful.
This whole volume was rough with how the execution was taken place. Especially, when you know that this man did not deserve to be executed in the most vile way.
Other than the execution, this volume set the backdrop for the rise of Marie-Joseph Sanson, the youngest sister of our Charles who one day will become the executioner of Versailles. Thank god she taught her grandmother that old hag a damn lesson.
ART: the art in this volume alone requires a whole speech. Even though, the theme was a dark subject matter, the art was drawn so beautifully that the agony of the characters were felt. One thing I adore about Shin'ichi's work is the ability to draw characters with emotions on their faces.
I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the series best volume!
It hyperfocuses on a single execution and keeps an underlying tension by having this execution be important to the future!
Also, Maria is and interesting addition to the cast right here, because she serves as an example of how wrong it can go with one of these Samson children, Maria being a straight-up psychopath. Which contrasts to how cute and innocent she looks.
And the manner the author uses her here is very good. Good potential which unfortunately gets spoiled later.
"This is France, Charles. You and I have no will. All those born in France are nothing more than a single wisp of hair, just a part of His Royal Majesty's body."
I might have given this one a better review since the execution was so well executed in comparison to everything else, but we're back again to mediocre writing towards the end of the volume.
Can't be helped. It is what it is.
Edit: reevaluating the volume based on later developments.
Execution and torture were once again made out to be an exact science in Mode of Death (ch 32). Anne-Marthe's pride never ceases to amuse me, and neither do the creative visuals in this manga.
The panels in Absolute Paternal Authority (ch 33) were insane and captured how grotesque everything was. The comparison of Damiens's body being torn apart to glass being created was something I did not think I would need or appreciate...
I am thinking about what Nicholas told Charles about how the public witnessing an execution brought them exhiliration and ecstacy that brought them closer to the king of France. How something born from cruelty could be likened to divinity is beyond me.
I wonder how Anne-Marthe felt though. I kinda wanna see her unleash hell on Nicholas.
I feel like there is much to say about the different characters' awe at what was quickly turning to be a spectacle in The Scaffold's Love (ch 34). However, my almost-sleepy brain can only marvel at Sakamoto Shinichi's artistry!
Bud of the Red Rose (ch 35) lent some of the spotlight to the two characters I find most interesting, and I am excited! This is also quite strange to say, but I like the implication that Anne-Marthe adhered to some principles of her own, and disdained people who could not follow through their own actions.
I enjoyed the girlbossification of Anne-Marthe and Marie Joseph in Golden Rules of Blood Relatives (ch 36). Ironic how Anne-Marthe, the matriarch and Iron Law of the Sanson family, thought of herself as being less than a man.
I listened to Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring while reading to Bright Moonlight Cantata (ch 37), and was that an interesting experience even though I did not know how to time it. The tension in the air, ropes, and string were palpable all throughout this chapter. I was amazed by the use of the violin to aid with the build up and climax. There was also something about seeing Charles splattered with blood.
Resplendent Agony (ch 38) had similar vibes to the previous chapter, but it was more emotional and heartfelt than ?? Exciting ?? Thrilling ?? The visuals here depicted something of a more religious and immaculate nature. The use of the violin and its strings was so clever! In spite of the differences between this and the previous chapter, they were every bit as incredible as each other.
It is also interesting how in spite of the brutality of the execution method and the actual event, Damiens's farewell felt so soft and gentle, and so much like coming home. Perhaps it was.
I beg to differ with what Julius Schmidt said about Charles-Henri Sanson having a fragile heart in Blaze of Enlightenment (ch 39). He definitely had a strong heart and stomach.
I loved how Tobias Schmidt was emphasized to be the son of a musical instruments repairman. The guillotine was perhaps the most humane instrument for executions. Speaking of sons, I wonder how Damiens got his hands on his wife's dress...
The Young "Femme Fatale" (ch 40) was wild... I fear for Marie though...
Genesis of the Innocents (ch 41) was all about Marie, but I already knew I liked her from the beginning. This was the chapter that really made me like Charles for his bond with his younger sister, standing up to Anne-Marthe, and his vision and optimism.

3.0 stars This volume focused specifically on the écartèlement execution of Damiens, an unrelenting father blamed for the attempted assassination of the current king of France. This might be an unpopular opinion but I don't really like Marie's character. I would hate to see her replace our present protagonist but it seems like she will definitely stop being a side character as per the time skip.
very very solid, loving marie! as i read this i wonder how much of it is historically accurate. i’ve looked up a lot of the names and obv these are real ppl who did these things but like how much of the family stuff is real and like did it all happen like this? obv i assume it’s exaggerated for the sake of the work but i mean how much is it exaggerated?
