Locked in a supernatural prison. Forbidden to see each other’s faces.
Sola is stolen from her life, stripped of her magic, and forced to be the object of a madman’s obsession. After a century behind bars, her world is a cycle of pain and abuse—until a kindhearted stranger is thrown in the cell beside hers. Escape no longer feels impossible, but hope had betrayed her before.
Jailed for the wrong reasons, Quinn’s centuries of loyal service end in torment and chains. A healer with secrets of his own, he never expected to find light in the darkness—or to fall for the fierce, broken woman at his side.
Together, they have one chance at freedom, but survival outside the prison walls may prove even more dangerous than what awaited them within.
Author's Note
Suffered is a dual perspective paranormal romance with urban fantasy elements. As part of the Lost Sovereign series, it can be read as a standalone, but we recommend that they be read in order. While the romance within sizzles, this series is fade to black/closed door.
Anna Hawke is a paranormal romance novelist dedicated to bringing to life the voices inside her head. With a degree in Journalism and a vested interest in grammatical perfection, Anna’s written works contain sarcasm, spark, and sexy alpha males too handsome for their own good.
When she isn’t busy wrangling her three young children, gorgeous husband, and an opinionated grey tabby, Anna enjoys reading romance novels, riding horses, and traveling to places where hiking boots are required. Writing, however, is her favorite pastime, and Anna loves nothing more than pouring herself a 24 oz mug of tea, wrapping herself in a blanket, and giving her imaginary friends a voice.
For sure read book one before devouring this read. This takes place right after the massive cliffhanger of the first book. There’s the classical angst and forced proximity that make these books easy to get sucked into for hours. I was glad we got to learn more into Quinn but I’m left wanting more like always! I can’t wait for the next one :)
This book pulled me in from the first page and I just couldn’t stop reading it it was amazing!
The characters, the chemistry, the story, it was everything you need in a PNR and more!
I loved how it started with the imprisonment and I love the cellmates trope it was just match made in heaven for those two! The characters were so strong and supportive for each other I mean who doesnt like a man that would sacrifice himself for her.
If you love close door shifter romances with action, trauma healing, fated mates and ofcourse a HEA I absolutely recommend reading this!
This one was darker than I expected for this author. But with darker elements comes more trauma; with more trauma comes more character depth and emotion. Honestly, the author really writes her characters deeply anyways, so adding this element to this specific story really just enhanced it beyond what I expected. Don’t get me wrong, the book still keeps the vibes you expect; it just had a little extra depth. I actually finished this book in one sitting because I got so hooked into the story. I was like “I will just start this book”, and then whoops, it’s several hours later and I’m done 😅. It was a good break too between all the other “style” of books I had been reading. The romance is sweet, and the spice is closed door. The shifter world and storyline built up nicely. You won’t be getting an “omg you’re my mate!… oh no you don’t like me… now you do!… the end” (TBH I would’ve cried if it was… because I know how this author builds worlds). Don’t worry, there is a lot more happening. The story actually picks up where book 1 leaves off and keeps building up the world. Which if you didn’t catch on with that, read book 1 first, then read this one. Such a great book!
This paranormal romance is book 2 in The Lost Sovereign series. The romance in this book is friends to lovers and mate bonds. The spice in the book is closed door spice. Quinn made a choice he can’t regret, even if he is punished for it. Sola has been trapped behind bars for longer than she imagined. Powerless and alone until Quinn is put next to her. A friendship blossoms in their darkest tortures. When Quinn and Sola are given their one chance to be free, they could risk dangers higher than being behind bars.
What I experienced during the first eight chapters of this book is exactly what the title says: I had suffered. During those chapters, my chest felt tight, my brows furrowed in heavy concentration (as attested to by the husband who could see me while I was reading), and I was eager to get to the part when I could finally breathe easy again. That's a testament to the amazing storytelling that happened in the book, not only in those early chapters, but all throughout.
I had felt the main characters' pain and suffering during their captivity; their moments of hopelessness amidst the episodes of quiet camaraderie and kinship. And indeed, when they made their escape (oh, how indeed did they escape?) I finally felt myself relax, though not yet fully. I relished the excitement and the curiosity of what was yet to come for Quinn and Sola. How was Sola to face her freedom after a century of captivity? And Quinn, now without a legion, stripped of his primary role as mender, and without his magic - how was he to move on?
It goes without saying that I was hooked on the story from start to end. And as it usually happens in all of her books, the author gives us immense gratification with the main characters' happy ending, but stresses us out with the teaser to the next book. Book Three comes out January next year, and the three months from now till then seems interminably long to wait for us to know what happens next. Still, experience tells me it'll be so worth the wait!
I was granted a free review copy of this book. I write this review voluntarily.
Absolutely brilliant. Devastating but inspiring, an emotional roller coaster that kept me glued to the pages, read in one sitting. It was just as engaging as book 1, Shattered, holding you captive wanting to know what next? How much more could they take? Would they find help? You become so invested in more than just the main characters outcomes, knowing that the fated mates in each book in the series are only part of the bigger picture, and so many other characters are crucial to the story.
In Suffered you follow Quinn’s journey after the final acts of Shattered, as Julian has been healed by him but predictably turns on him and brutally punishes him. This is how he meets fellow prisoner Sola, and we learn of her long suffering in Julian’s care. No spoilers, but they begin to bond before finding a way out, and this slow burn romance continues alongside the much scarier story line of surviving the Prime (and other’s) search for them, while they recover from trauma inflicted upon them and find a new way forward. Sola’s legion and family are fantastic, and help to lend a lightness of humour and camaraderie to an otherwise horrifying situation, but as always a HEA for the main couple is achieved, for now, while the over-arching story continues yet to be resolved at another time, in a future book. Speaking of which, the epilogue has me itching for the next book, Scarred, I sense another great read coming our way.
Okay… buckle up, because this one is wild 😳💥 Imagine being trapped in a world that’s basically a nightmare on repeat, where danger lurks around every corner and even hope feels like a trap ⚡🖤 Enter our heroine: tough, fierce, and full of fire 🔥💪 despite literally being dealt the worst hand imaginable. And just when things feel utterly hopeless… cue the mysterious, kind-of-perfect stranger who somehow manages to shake her world upside down 😏💫
The chemistry here? Chef’s kiss 😘💖 Sparks, stolen glances, quiet moments that punch you right in the heart 💔✨—this is the slow-burn romance you didn’t know you were craving. And don’t get me started on the tension… every choice, every step toward freedom feels like walking a tightrope over a pit of chaos 😱🩸
If you love your urban fantasy with high stakes ⚔️🌌, swoon-worthy tension 💕🔥, and a romance that sneaks up on you like a plot twist you never saw coming 🤯💗, this book is an absolute rollercoaster of emotions 🎢🖤✨ Seriously, prepare to fangirl, scream, and fall hopelessly in love 😍🥹… all while praying the next chapter doesn’t destroy you 💀💔
An epic second installment in the lost sovereigns series! Like every other Anna Hawke book I’ve read, it was binge-worthy with great plot and character development. Anna explores deep and dark themes in ways that still feel safe to read, learning and growing right along with the characters. In Suffered, she beautifully handles discussion around abuse, what it does to someone, and how that person can heal and find safety in someone else again. The best kind of story holds redemption. And as always, a HEA ending 💛

Another Anna Hawke book hits it out of the park! 🎉 I’m already ready for the next one!
Thank you for the ARC from Anna Hawke, all opinions are my own.
I’m loving this series! I didn’t think it was possible, but this book was even better than the first. It picks up right where Shattered left off, so be sure to read it first. This is not a standalone.
Sola had been through some seriously terrible things, and while it still affected her (how could it not?), she was resilient and strong. I really admired her kind strength. It was nice getting to know Quinn better. I loved his optimism even in the midst of dire circumstances. He never lost hope, which was inspiring.
This book deals with some hard subjects, but there was also light, laughter, and hope, which I really appreciated.
If you’re a fan of closed-door paranormal romance, you’ll love this series! I highly, highly recommend it and am very eager for book three!
I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
We pick up right from the end of book one with Quinn facing the consequences of his actions against his Prime. I really enjoy the story line and the characters but this one was a bit slow for me there was some repetitiveness. I still enjoyed the read since I love this Dystopian Society and the shifters in it. Also the angst and suspense. Quinn is a carer at his core and wants to project Sola but she was really strong and felt the same for him. I felt like they complimented each other well.
Anna left me wanting the next in this series with the set up in the last chapter.

I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Highly enjoyed this second installment!! This book directly follows book 1, and it picks up after Quinn saves Julian’s life. Quinn’s aide of Jade and Niko left Julian irate, and he was immediately thrown in a secret prison. The story truly starts to unravel. I enjoyed both main characters and appreciated learning more about our FMC. At the end of the book, we’re truly left with more questions as to what will happen next and who else is involved in the secrets of the First Legion.
I liked it better than the first book! Their period of captivity didn’t drag on and the parts with more tension were strategic and dint feel dropped in for the sake of drama. The only thing that I didn’t like was how it wrapped up at the end, the reunions with family did feel more stilted but that could just be my aversion to more gooey things like sentiment lol. I don’t think I’ll be reading the third book though because I’m not as invested in those main characters. I also felt like there was no progress made in the fight against the larger villains in the story. Instead, it felt more like a bridge to a bigger conflict. It definitely worked well at getting me out of reading slump!
I think I may have liked this one more than the first book in the series. There is a trigger warning at the very beginning that is needed as the first 30 percent is heavy and dark but it really makes you emotionally attached to the characters. Similar to book one, there is almost an “insta-love” feeling which I don’t care for but it’s not a giant book where the time frame allows for more romantic build up. Will definitely read the next one when it comes out.
I can say Sola and Quinns story will definitely touch your heart. Poor Sola has been caged and stripped of everything she was and abused daily. Quinn being locked away after centries of loyalty. Both will only get one chance to escape. I love the strength even when everything seems hopless that they each bring to each other. I was deeply touched.
I absolutely LOVED Quinn and Sola’s story. Don’t get me wrong. It was a horrible situation that ended in restoration, but nonetheless, I do not wish the circumstances of their encounter to anyone. Having said that, I was drawn to their story from chapter 1 and can’t wait what the next installment will bring.
From beginning to end this book is an emotional rollercoaster! My heart broke when listening to both Quinn and Sola’s stories. While they go through many hardships, they are also rewarded with so many joys! I quite literally stayed up all night reading 80% of this book, I just couldn’t put it down! I look forward to the next title in the series!
Trapped in a cruel supernatural prison, Sola and Quinn find light in the darkest of places, forging a connection that’s equal parts tender and fierce. This dark, emotional story is one of pain, resilience, and unexpected connection as they cling to hope and fight for a chance at freedom together.
