A prince bound by duty. A commoner who knows her place. Can they find a future for their forbidden passion?
After his cousin is kidnapped and tortured in his stead, Prince Raul works himself mercilessly so he can be worthy of such a sacrifice. When he collapses from exhaustion at a public ceremony, the prince is forced to take a vacation. He reluctantly finds refuge in the mountains, guided by a strong woman whose warmth and understanding dispel the shadows of his guilt.
Erica Ortiz has never felt good enough. Wrestling with the weight of her father’s disapproval, she pushes herself to reach greater heights as a pilot and a part-time wilderness guide. But she never expected to be responsible for the crown prince’s safety on a towering mountain cliff—or to share his innermost secrets.
While Erica battles her growing love for the fascinating, tortured prince, Raul realizes that his feelings for her have grown too powerful to control. He can never offer her the forever she deserves. The heir to the throne and a commoner can never marry.
When they join together for a desperate rescue mission, can they tear down the barriers that threaten to destroy their love?

This is not a review because I'm the author. :-) But I am thrilled to let you know that the prince has arrived! ROYAL CALEVA: RAUL is out in the world at a special price of $2.99 on Kindle for release week only. Grab him while he's cheap!
As always, I'm donating a portion of my pre-order and first week's royalties to an animal rescue organization. Dr. Darling Daughter the veterinarian recommended Harmony Dog Rescue in Pittsburgh because her clinic works with them to provide safe homes for dogs whose owners are experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, or medical emergencies. Even my cats, Skoda and Mobi, approve. They figure dogs, being inferior beings, need all the help they can get.
I hope you'll fall in love with my handsome, workaholic prince!
Raul is the crowned Prince of Caleva and is known for his dedication to his country and his duty. He is rather stoic with everyone except for those closest to him. When his father commands him to take a rest and arranges for a vacation of camping and rock climbing, he is paired with none other than Gabriel's trusted pilot Erica who is an avid and seasoned climber.
The two hit it off so well and are drawn to each other. But, with Raul's status and duty they each know that nothing could come of it.
Circumstances keep putting them into each other's path and true passion cannot be denied!
What this couple go through at times are funny, at times are breath stealing and the heat is always simmering.
The ending will melt your heart and have you swooning for sure. Bravo Nancy Herkness for delivering yet another wonderful book!
Royal Calvera: Raul by Nancy Herkness, book three in her Royal Caleva series, is a wonderful story containing a crowned Prince suffering from the weight of guilt, unexpected love, intrigue, family, and a little bit of suspense.
Raul, the crowned Prince of Caleva, is known for his dedication and duty to his country. On the outside, he comes across as the perfect prince and the heir to the throne. On the inside, he suffers from tremendous guilt due to his Cousin Gabriel’s sacrifice during a kidnapping; which Raul blames himself for. Being perfect takes a toll, and when Raul collapses during a royal engagement, his father commands him to go on a much-needed mountain vacation, with camping and rock climbing has been arranged. Royal pilot and climbing instructor, Erica Ortiz has been hired to be his guide. She is independent, smart, Gabriel's trusted pilot and quite lovely; working to be perfect in every way and defy expectations due to past family dynamics. From their first meeting, these two hit it off; drawn to each other with sizzling chemistry sparking between them. Erica sees beyond his royal stature, behind his guarded heart, and doesn’t let him get away with anything. Their relationship builds as they embark on an undercover hunt to recover one of the country’s national treasures. With Raul’s status and duty they each know nothing can come from this attraction, or is it possible for a royal to marry a commoner.
Raul and Erica learn that things are not always as they seem when it comes to family and expectations. The intrigue tugged my heart, especially as this national treasure meant everything to Raul, Erica and the citizens of Caleva. Then there are Raul's bodyguards: loyal, trustworthy, funny, discreet and protective of their charge(s); what would Raul do without them. Raul and Erica are perfect for each other and you will love the buildup to their relationship.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book prior to purchase.
First of all, this series is amazing! After reading the story of Luis, I didn’t think it could get any better. I was so wrong!
Raul is the Prince of Caleva, next in line to the throne. Lately he’s been working so hard, that his father, Luis, notices the stress his son is feeling. Luis tells him he has to take a mandatory vacation, so he can recharge. Unbeknownst to him, his stepmother has asked one of the pilots for the royals, to please take Raul on a hiking/rock climbing trek. Erica has experience in this sport, so who better to trust, someone already in their employ.
Erica is extremely nervous that she has been entrusted with the safety of someone so important. As it turns out, the Prince is just like any other person. She’s enjoying this vacation and he’s easy on the eyes. Meanwhile, Raul is enjoying the time getting to know someone so intelligent and easy to talk to. Everything is going great till Raul has an accident and hurts his ankle, cutting short his vacation.
Back at the Castle Raul is forced to stay off his feet to let his ankle heal. When Erica comes to visit, he is delighted. So much so, that he asks Erica to come back the next day so they can spend time together. They both feel an attraction and it’s useless to fight it. Erica knows she will get hurt in the end, since the reality of a Prince falling for a commoner is never going to happen. Erica becomes suspicious of some activity in the mountains. Caleva is famous for their Dragons, a large lizard with beautiful colors, that is not found anywhere else in the world. She believes someone is trying to smuggle one out of the country. After discussing it with Raul, they both start an investigation into the matter.
This book has everything, romance, sexiness, adventure, and mystery. It is a must read! I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Nancy Herkness returns to the lush island of Caleva with a new story brimming with adventure, emotional baggage, family dynamics, cross-class romance, and a whole lot of steam.
While Raul is an important secondary character in the first two books of this series, it's only in this third book that we delve beneath the surface and really learn what drives the man. Learning how the after-effects of the kidnapping of his cousin have impacted Raul exposes a character who is much more complex than I had guessed.
Erica is new to the Caleva universe. As a commoner, she would ordinarily never spend private time with the royal prince but as the private pilot to his cousin who also has wilderness skills, she's the perfect person to guide him when he's forced to take a vacation. I enjoyed her character. She also has many layers as well as emotional baggage to unpack. Watching her tackle those emotional obstacles as well as her growing feelings for Raul was a pleasure.
The chemistry between Raul and Erica is explosive - readers should expect a high level of heat in this book - but they should also expect emotional depth. As I said above, these two have a significant amount of baggage to sort through and while the emotional weight is significant, it never felt too weighty or angsty to me. The ratio of emotion to steam to adventure maintains a good balance that kept me invested and eagerly turning pages.
As with the other books in the series, there's also a bit of mystery in this one that brings action and adventure to the story. Herkness had me on the edge of my seat with this aspect of the book, wondering how it would all play out. Happy to say I was not disappointed!
I don't know if Herkness has more books planned for this beautiful island but I hope she does. They would definitely be on my must-buy list.
A Prince Meets His Match – and it’s Perfect! I received an early copy of the book and look forward to it downloading on September 24, 2025.
On the outside, Prince Raul is the perfect prince and the heir to the throne of Caleva. On the inside, he suffers from incredible guilt due to his cousin Gabriel’s sacrifice during a kidnapping. Raul blames himself and doubles down on being the perfect prince. Yet, that perfection takes a toll – and when Raul collapses during a royal engagement, his family (who are wonderful!!) forces him to go on a much-needed mountain vacation. Enter royal pilot and climbing instructor, Erica Ortiz as his guide. She’s independent, smart, and lovely – she too works to be perfect in every way and defy expectations due to past family dynamics.
The thing is – she gets him. Erica sees beyond his royal stature, sees behind his guarded heart, and she doesn’t let him get away with anything. The chemistry between them is fire! Their relationship builds as they embark on an undercover hunt to recover one of the country’s national treasures. Love and adventure abound.
The best part of this series is that it is all about family. There’s so much love and affection – and they all want what’s best for each other. Our two main characters also learn that things are not always as they seem when it comes to family and expectations. Whether this is your first journey to Caleva and meeting with the royal family or if you’re like me, and have read the previous two books, this story stands tall on its own. Both Raul and Erica are incredibly brave and perfect for each other – and the ensemble cast simply leaps off the page!
Nancy Herkness delivers a compelling mix of mystery, adventure, and royal romance in Royal Caleva: Raul. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Caleva’s rugged mountains, the story follows Erika—an experienced hiker, mountain climber and former military pilot—who is recruited to guide Prince Raul on a relaxing camping expedition. Raul is injured and must return home. Erika delights in Raul’s interest in the Calevian Dragons, one of her specialties, and he engages her to help solve the mystery of an alleged missing dragon and the dragon’s eggs. Her deep understanding of the island and the legendary Calevian Dragon adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, giving the plot a rich, mythical quality that kept me turning pages.
However, the romance felt overly rushed. From their very first touch, Erika and Raul are swept into a whirlwind of longing and lust that, at times, overshadows their character arcs. Their immediate physical attraction dominates much of the narrative, leaving little room for deeper emotional development. While their chemistry is undeniable, I found myself wishing for more substance in their individual growth and relationship dynamics.
Despite that, Royal Caleva: Raul is still an entertaining read with a strong plot foundation, a beautifully drawn setting, and a little bit of royal fantasy. If you are like me and love stories with a touch of romance and adventure, Royal Caleva: Raul, will not disappoint.
This is the third book I’ve read in this series and all I have to say is: Have mercy. I first fell in love with Gabriel, and then Luis, but Raul? Hooboy! As they may say in Caleva, he is muy caliente! In my opinion, Raul is a combination of it “all”. He is commanding in his role as Prince, a REALLY good son and family member, and one amazing boyfriend. Of course, he wouldn’t describe his relationship with her this way but that’s what he is to Erica Ortiz.
Erica is actually a Royal Pilot to Gabriel but she is “persuaded” to help Raul take some recovery time off – on a mountain (climbing) respite. When the Queen of your country asks you to do this…you don’t say no.
Loved their crazy buildup to a relationship! There’s some intrigue that really tugged my heart, something that means everything to Raul, and Erica (as a citizen of Caleva), as well. And let's not forget about Raul's bodyguards...loyal, trustworthy, funny, discreet [ahem!] and protective of their charge(s). I don’t think Raul would know what to do without them.
Raul and Erica are perfect together; they just have to figure out how to make it work. They are from different walks of Calevan life but I think they make an amazing couple. They just need to wrap their heads and hearts around it. Besides, they can’t keep their hands off one another!
This edition of Royal Caleva RAUL expertly blends romance, mystery, and suspense around the intriguing tale of the missing Royal Calevan dragon and her stolen eggs.
Nancy Herkness’s imagined kingdom is rich with the charm of royalty, creating a story that truly resonates. At its heart is the charming Prince Raul, whose connection with Erica—a strong American woman and his hiking guide during a much-needed vacation —adds depth to the narrative. Erica also serves as the private pilot for Prince Raul’s cousin, Gabriel, the Duke of Bencalor. These well-rounded characters draw you in, their emotions genuine and compelling.
As a hidden secret comes to light, tension builds, then a royal wedding celebrating Gabriel and Quinn. Meanwhile, Raul and Erica embark on a mission to track down dragon poachers and recover the missing Calevan dragon and her eggs.
Each character is both relatable and captivating, balancing strength and vulnerability beautifully. With its steamy romance, heartfelt family relationships, and a gratifying happy ending, this book is a page-turner that celebrates love, loyalty, trust, and the power of human connection.
I was hooked from beginning to end. You will not be disappointed! While this story stands well on its own, it will undoubtedly inspire you to explore the adventures of Gabriel and Luis next.
Nancy Herkness is a favorite author and Raul, the third book in the Royal Caleva series did not disappoint. Filled with warmth and royal protocols, this contemporary romance with some heat had me turning the pages late into the night.
From the first page to the last I was thrilled to be back in Caleva and felt like I was home. It was wonderful to catch up with characters we’ve met before plus meet new ones. There are vivid and colorful descriptions of the island, the homes, and the dragons that made me feel like I was there. There are multiple stories being told and they are woven together nicely. Through it all Raul and Erica are center stage and brought to life. There is closure and a happily ever after that was sweet and romantic. The epilogue that takes place eight months after the story ends was a nice touch but iwishit went on a little longer.
Raul is a wonderful contemporary romance that had a lot of heart as Raul and Erica navigate their feelings for each other. The only problem is he’s a prince and the future king and she’s a commoner and will it matter in the end?
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 here and on other sites.
Fantastic third book in the Royal Caleva series! I'm so happy that we finally have Raul's story. Nancy Herkness continues her wonderful series with this installment and its made me fall in love with the island nation of Caleva even more. Raul takes a 'break' from his royal duties to rest and relax out in the Calevan mountains, and the descriptions of the beautiful landscape are so real that I was easily able see the views and vistas in my head. Raul's story also gives us more introspection into how Raul feels about what Gabriel did for him, his sense of duty to his family, friends and citizens of Caleva, and the pressures of not wanting to let his father, the King, down. I also enjoyed the introduction of Erica, an admirable pilot, experienced mountain climber and all around badass who captures the attention of our Prince. This is a wonderful story and I enjoyed it thoroughly!
It is always a joy to return to the picturesque island of Caleva. Nancy’s descriptions of the land are so vivid one feels as though they are actually there!
In this third entry in the series, we learn Raul’s story. While we have met him in the other books, we get to know him in depth here. As an aside, I will say this book stands alone well but you are really missing out if you don’t read the first two books.
I’m not going to summarize the plot as others have already done so and quite well at that. What I will say is that Raul and Erica are very likable characters and they are fire!! This story has it all - adventure, mystery, family dynamics (in a Royal family), romance and more.
Don’t miss out - ‘travel’ to this awesome place and get to know the Royal family. I look forward to going back soon!
I think this was my favorite book in the Royal Caleva series so far. I'd been waiting for Raul's story since the first book. The dutiful son, the loyal cousin, the complicated boyfriend, Raul had many layers to him and was pushing himself too hard. When forced on a vacation, Raul met Erica. Not only a dedicated pilot but also a skilled guide and climber, Erika proved to be a fitting companion and confidant. I enjoyed their relationship and progression to more than friends. It wasn't an easy process for either one but most definitely a interesting and steamy one.
I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book and, really, the whole series if you haven't already. It's written very well, has a good storyline, and has relatable characters, even though some of them are royalty. Download this book. You won't regret it!!
Just when you think the Royal Caleva series can’t get any better… whoa! Get ready for a HOT and wild ride.
Raul, the crown prince of Caleva, is next in line to the throne and his father, the King, is preparing him to rule. Handsome, sexy, skilled and daring, Raul is focused on princely duties with no time for relaxation or romance. Raul’s greatest desire is to represent the kingdom well and make his father proud. That is, until a skilled and feisty commoner enters the scene and unwittingly captures his heart.
The suspense quickly builds from the get go, with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Adventure, danger, intrigue, romance, lots of spice … this book has it all. As the Royal Caleva series progresses (from Gabriel to Luis to Raul) you learn a little bit more about each character, and they become like the family you wish you had.
I love reading romantic books about royality. This book was fantastic! Erica is a fierce, protective, beautiful woman pilot. Love women in typically man roles and this book had several. Raul is the handsome prince who puts country before self (which is very noble)
They both have daddy issues. Trying to be the children that would make them proud and earn their respect. Sometimes things turned out harder then it had to be.
The suspense, mystery, adventures are thrilling throughout this story. The love scenes are very steamy and the banter witty. You can feel the struggle each character is living to negotiate through the royal channels.
My mind enjoyed the visualizations and the journey this story took me on. I highly recommend this book. KUDOS NANCY!
Raul Prince of Caleva Erica Ortiz - Captain on flying planes
This was a story made you laugh made you cry. Raul need a well good vacation so he decided if he had a choice it would rock climbing. His teacher was Erica Ortiz. He love the way she looked at him. Then he decided to go off alone and he twisted his ankle. But it was a good thing he did because found a hole that was deep enough to realized someone was taking The Dragon of Caleva alone with the baby dragons. Things Raul carried about the dragons and their safety. This is a book I couldn't put down. The story line was fabulous and the characters were fantastic together. Nancy is fabulous woman who writes stories that are intriguing. I recommend this book for anyone who like intriguing books.
Third book in the series and I’m still invented. Gabriel and Luis were swoony, but Raul? He gives them a run for their money. He’s got the charm, loyalty, and everything one would want in her man. Even if he doesn't know it yet or believes in it.
Erica, a pilot (love that for her), gets asked by the Queen to take him on a mountain recovery trip. Their attraction is instant and intense, but nothing about that is easy. He's a royal prince and she is a commoner. Their love was doomed from the start; or is it?
A lot happened in this book and i loved it from start to finish. This is probably my favorite in the series and if you're looking for your next read - this series is it!!!
Just finished this book for the second time - so good! Lucky enough to receive an ARC, Raul's story continues the Royal Caleva's story. There's adventure, humor, romance, and insight to Raul's life as a prince, a man, and a future king. Erica is a delightful match who sees Raul as a human but still respectful to his royal life. She is her own person. Nancy Herkness writes strong characters, solid story lines with research into skills her characters have (you nailed the climbing scene!), and books that a reader returns to time and time again. Here's hoping the series will continue with a book for Grace and a book for Mikel!
Wow! Wow! WOW! ROYAL CALEVA: RAUL is an everything you want romance book! Spellbinding. Sizzling. Scintillating. Perfectly perfect from beginning to end with just the right amount of intrique to balance the heart-swooning romance.
The instant attraction between Raul and Erica ignite fireworks which light up the entirety of the book! Their adventures along with steamy love making scenes make ROYAL CALEVA: RAUL an instant page turner.
This book was so enjoyable to read, I was profoundly sad when Raul's story ended. I just flat-out wanted more!
Thank you Ms Herkness for giving readers an amazingly awesome book. Your characters are lovable. Your plot is exciting. Your descriptive passages conjure notable pictures. And the imagination you used in writing ROYAL CALEVA: RAUL is outstanding! I LOVED this book and highly recommend it to all lovers of the romance genre! Well done! Very well done!
Another sweeping, romantic chapter in the Royal Caleva series!
I’ve loved following the Royal Caleva series, and Raul is a spectacular conclusion. Nancy Herkness blends adventure, romance, and heartfelt emotion as Raul, the crown prince, weighed down by duty, finds unexpected refuge and love with Erica, a fearless pilot and guide. Their chemistry sparks against a backdrop of danger, daring rescues, and impossible choices. And just when I thought the story couldn’t get any more moving, the epilogue delivered one of the most breathtaking and romantic endings I’ve read — the perfect crowning touch to this series.
Another royal finds his forever. Prince Raul, heir to the throne of Caleva, drives himself relentlessly every day. After his cousin is taken by kidnappers in his place, Raul feels tremendous guilt. Driving himself to exhaustion, he collapses at a ceremony one day. His father, doctor, and many others force him to take a break. He wants to hike the woods and climb in the hills. As it happens, one of the royal pilots, a beautiful woman named Erica, is also a qualified outdoors guide. They should not find each other attractive, nor act on it, but they do. The subplot involving the Calevan national treasure, the Calevan Dragon, makes an interesting side story.
I received an early copy of this book. However, I also pre-ordered my copy and well. Of course I had to read this right away and didn't stop till the end of the book.
Prince Raul finds his happiness. His love interest is Erica Gabriel 's pilot. There is Hot romance, suspense, mystery and the Royal wedding we all have been waiting for. Loved the Bodyguards as well. You also see another side of King Luis. Loved this book it was so worth the wait. oh and the ending was so perfect!!!
This is the newest edition to the family story we've come to love. It stands alone, but readers will enjoy and understand the appearances of other family members and friends if you've read the previous books.
While I enjoyed the first part of the book, with the getting to know each other events, more than the more suspenseful second part, I totally loved the two main characters and their finding of each other. I am looking forward to the next installment of life in this picturesque Kingdom.
Received a ARC for a honest review. The 3rd book in this series ( and i hope Grace gets a book!!!!!!) A prince ,working to hard is sent out on a rock climbing, camping trip and his guide is Erica. This is Rauls pilot and she is a certified outdoor adventure guide. So off they go, going good until the prince hurts his foot in a hole that turns into a dug out dragon nest and its empty. So the mystery begins. And did i forget to say about the sparks that fly between them. And the dragon tattoo..i have to stop or i will tell you the whole book. Loved it!!!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
In Nancy Herkness' continuing tale of Caleva and its' inhabitants, I found Prince Raul totally Yummy. The way he is portrayed hits the spot for me. He doesn't let a little thing like an injury get in the way of loving the woman he wants. His romance with Erica is captivating. They team up to capture royal bad guys and return a dragon and her eggs to Caleva. A Dragon WOW. And of course there is romance and kisses I'd like to experience. If you like books with romance and a little suspense and yummy kissing, throw in a dragon this is the book for you. Don't Miss It.
Oh Raul, be still my beating heart! I was so looking forward to reading Raul’s story having gotten to know him a little in Gabriel and Luis’s stories and Nancy did not disappoint! He’s your classic book prince but updated for the current time. He meets his match in pilot Erica and boy do the sparks fly - if you don’t like your stories with plenty heat then this might not be for you as it’s muy caliente! This really has everything I look for in a romance, but I’d expect nothing less from this superb writer. Highly recommended. Thank you Nancy!
The third in Nancy Herkness' Caleva series, this book does not disappoint. It is well-written with very well-developed characters. I have been impressed by the author's impeccable research and rich vocabulary, both English and Spanish. There is plenty of suspense, both in the main plot of forbidden love and in interesting sub-plots and characters. Raul is sexy, sensitive, and slightly insecure. He finds his support in Erica, who helps to encourage his best, wonderful self and reinforces his underlying confidence. Great reading!
I received an early copy of Royal Caleva Raul by Nancy Herkness and loved it. Raul’s story can stand alone, but I feel you should read Gabriel’s and Luis’s stories first. Raul feels the pressure of being Prince of Caleva, and is forced by family to take a few days off. During his brief vacation, we are introduced to a mystery regarding the famous Caleva dragons and an intriguing woman. Nancy has written a romantic cozy mystery which I encourage everyone to read.
What an amazing story of a prince finding his true love. You will find intrigue, suspense, love, and laughter in this book. I love reading about this wonderful island paradise and it's royalty.
Nancy Herkness bring her characters to life and you become invested in their future. I typically notch out a couple of days to read before picking up one of Nancy's books because I have a hard time putting them down. This is definitely a must read!
I received an early copy of this book for an honest review. This is the third book of the Royal Caleva series, and it is as good as the previous ones. It is the love story between Raul – a workaholic and son of the King - and Erica a pilot. The plot moves along quick and it keeps the reader engaged. I have been reading Nancy Herkness’s books for years now, and she did not disappoint with this last one.
