Staking her claim!

Horse trainer Trent Kimball is starting to believe his family's ranch is actually cursed. Still, it's a place to recover from both his recent divorce and a humiliating professional setback. That is, until Shelby Foster shows up, looking far too fine for cowboy country, and informs Trent that she is the owner of the Eager Beaver Ranch!

Shelby left everything behind to move to Montana. And she's not about to just walk away! Even if it means sharing a roof with a rude cowboy…temporarily. As they wait for their papers, animosity turns into suggestive teasing. Then it becomes a sexy-sweet temptation neither can resist! Whoever produces the deed keeps the ranch. But will they lose something more important?

Debbi Rawlins currently lives with her husband in Las Vegas, Nevada. A native of Hawaii, she married on Maui and has since lived in Cincinnati, Chicago, Tulsa, Houston, Detroit, and Durham, North Carolina during the past twenty years.

Now that she's had enough of the gypsy life, it'll take a crane, a bulldozer, and a forklift to get her out of her new home. Not that her friends would let her leave Las Vegas even if she wanted to. Debbi's home has become a retreat for writers from both coasts and her guest rooms are rarely empty.

Had some trouble getting into the story - the basic premise seemed a bit implausible and their polarized behaviour in the first four or five chapters was so childish, silly and mean that I found it tiresome.

However I kept reading and came to enjoy how the story played out.

The Hero Trent was so negative and petty that it was unbelievable at first. As the story develops and he apologizes, we find out he is actually a nice guy and quite sweet and you could understand why the heroine might fall for him. He was a keeper.

Although there were hints, it felt like the full back story for the heroine was introduced too late. We don’t understand the choices she had made and her desperation to move without forethought and it was hard to relate to, or care for the her when she came off (at least for the first 4 or 5 chapters) as a bit of an airhead and not grounded in reality.

I really did not like that her revenge on Trent for his petty actions was to provoke him sexually by walking around in only a towel and making provocative comments. My margin note wonders what could that possibly help her accomplish, except to invite attack by a stranger??? It made no sense - good thing the hero was a nice guy.

One they started to make peace, the book moves along better and was enjoyable, but overall my final impression was that I was disappointed in the plot and the character of both the hero and heroine in the first half of the book. If I had not really liked the previous books in the Made in Montana series (I rated them from 3 to 5 stars), I would have abandoned the read at least by the half way point.
