“Teleporter” is the second in a series of stories featuring the Hyllis family who tend to inherit “talents.” The stories are set after a plague induced apocalypse which resulted in the collapse of civilization and reduced mankind back to iron and horsepower.
Eva Hyllis and her ancestors became healers because they could feel the insides of their patients with their talents. This helps them diagnose the underlying causes of many illnesses. Having made a diagnosis, unfortunately, there is often not all that much that they can do to treat the problem.
Tarc Hyllis, Eva’s son, has telekinesis so that he can “push” objects with his mind as well as being able to feel inside of people. This gives him the ability to diagnose bleeding inside someone and then stop that bleeding by applying pressure inside the patient.
Now Tarc’s sister Daussie proves to be able to teleport small objects. She can remove a gallstone! This is a huge help to patients with gallbladder disease. Can she do more?
Unfortunately, the Hyllises have to leave their home in Walterston. Traveling the roads in their day and age can be dangerous. Will their talents also let them protect themselves?

I was born on the island of Cyprus where my dad was employed as a mining engineer. We moved to the Philippines (more mining) when I was three and then to Arizona when I was 9. I went to med school at the University of Arizona and did a residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Kansas. I taught Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until I retired in 2017.

I've always loved science fiction and it's been great fun getting to write some. I also like music and have a little home recording studio. You can read more, listen to some music and look at some of my art, at http://laury.dahners.com/ if you like.

This was an OK story, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous book. I found the beginning of the book a bit slow, but it did liven up in the second half. However, there were a few irritations when the author tried to introduce a bit more ‘tension’ into the action, but it was still a good read.

This is a good series so far. I like the way the author plays with my emotions but doesn't make me wallow in any specific emotion for too long. After saving the lives of everyone in town, Tarc and his family are forced to leave. Only a handful of people know how Tarc and his father helped with rescue and none of them know to the extent that they did that much. Having to hide Tarc's talents comes back to bite them now. All the townsfolk remember is the Hyllis family sheltering the outlaws and feeding them. Never mind they were forced to do it. The rumor mill is out and the truth doesn't matter. Since they run the Inn and serve meals that nobody is coming to anymore, they decide it is better to leave town. I like that. I would hate a "turn the other cheek" kind of story. I don't mind it that much in the short term but I can only take so much of that. By the time I was really getting upset about the way the townspeople were treating the family, they decided to leave. I applauded it because it is exactly what I would have done. " Oh, you don't want me here? Well kiss my ass goodbye. Next time the town is invaded you can just get rid of them yourselves. Oh, and good luck with any healing you need in the future!"

The family sells the Inn and buys a wagon to join a caravan to try and find a new home. Along the way the caravan in ambushed by bandits. The same bandits that attacked their town. They have been extorting money from the local farms for "protection" but whoever doesn't pay gets hurt. The men are killed and the women are taken. Tarc has the same problem now as he did in the previous town. He has to hide his ability at the same time as trying to do everything he can to help. His sister now has some talent and it turns out while she can't move things like Tarc, she can move things by teleportation. I am still loathing the way the bandits treated women and more so because I know that if society would break down like it did in this book, things like that could and probably would happen.

Overall a good book and I am looking forward to the next one.

Like the first book, it was over before it felt like it had gotten started. The premise was great and fun to read (which didn't take long), but the writing was pretty repetitive, lacking any subtlety, and the plot was very simple. If it wasn't so gruesome, particularly in how keen it is to shine a light on the inhumane sort of things that raiders are wont to do to women, it'd be a good book for kids.

Bad

Big drop off from the first one. Ridiculous attitude of the townspeople made no sense. Running away " the best healer(around)". Done with this series.

Was hoping for more

The characters are weak people and not very well adapted to their world. This world is medieval and the casual brutality of this kind of society coming as a surprise to the inhabitants, gets to be irritating. The concepts of personal responsibility and community cohesion don't occur to any of the characters. This book shares this and other weaknesses with the first book, that I hoped would be corrected but aren't.

Given that, they all behave in a realistically wishy washy manner all through the book. The men and women are written as weirdly self- satisfied frontier people from the U.S. wild west, whether in the small town or the farms. There don't seem to be the fortified villages that were common in the middle ages. None of the characters has any depth and the plot is not only predictable but boringly delivered.

I stopped reading at page 233, because the reluctance of these people to defend themselves and the women thinking like helpless victims (but without caution, needless of danger and generally clueless was too much to handle). These characters were like a bad western with medieval trappings.

The background world is sketched in and isn't fully fleshed by the end of this book. I can't imagine that it gets any better. I won't be reading more of this series, it's too poorly written.

The whole of the first book I was like - But what about the daughter? And it is like the author heard me cos here she is finally given a POV. Good, steady, still interesting writing. Onto book 3 I go!

This book was a slow read it took over half the book to decide to leave town when it could have been said in half a page, which made the end of the story seemed rushed.

A New Talent

This is the second book in a continuing series. You need to read the first book to understand this one. There is no cliffhanger, as the book ends with a natural break in the narrative, but you are aware that the story will continue in the next book.

After freeing their small town from the raiders who terrorised them, the Hyllis family were treated with contempt. The town gossips believed that they were collaborators when they had no choice but to feed and house the raiders or risk their own deaths. Whilst dealing with the anger in the town, Daussie finally gets let into the family secret and she learns what she can do, and can’t. Disappointed to not be as strong as her brother she dives into her books to apply herself to understanding as much about healing as possible. Deciding that the town they saved is unbearable they Hyllis family take an opportunity to leave it behind and travel. Only it seems like some of their troubles can be found out on the road too.

This second book in the series mainly deals with both siblings and their abilities. It also shows their growing closeness as the work together to ascertain the limits of their skills and how to apply them creatively to tricky problems. I like how the author has charted the gradually evolving relationship between two teenaged siblings. It’s handled with a high degree of accuracy (if I remember correctly) showing the vacillation between being annoyed and feeling deep affection, sometimes both simultaneously.

As the family go out on the road we are introduced to more of the world created by the author. It’s just a small taste of what is out in the greater world, but it’s interesting to see how things might work. We also meet new people who travel with the caravan, some of whom might be interesting to the siblings.

Once again, this author delivers an entertaining and interesting read, that can be devoured quickly. I think I’ll go and devour the next one now!

Dahners, Laurence E. Teleporter. Hyllis Family No. 2. Kindle, 2014.
If you were ever unsure about the distinction between telekinesis and teleportation, this second installment of the Hyllis family saga will make it clear for you. Tarc can push things with his mind, but his sister can pick them up and move them. His talent works over longer distances than hers. These abilities have ramifications for self-defense which figure into the plot, but Dahners is much more interested in the possibilities for bloodless surgery than he is in the ability to correct the aim of an arrow or a thrown knife. The family must pull up stakes and join a merchant caravan. Life on the road is plagued by bandit attacks and exploitative local governments. Tarc struggles not to give in to adolescent braggadocio that would reveal his TK talent and put his family in more danger. If you have read any books by Dahners, you will not be surprised at any of this. 3.5 stars, rounded up.

Again, good story, lousy knowledge of punctuation

Comma Rules of Thumb: too gets a comma before (and after, if it’s mid-sentence) when it can be replaced by also. Names, nicknames, terms of courtesy (miss, sir, ma’am, etc.), even insults (bitch, bastard, etc.) get set off by a comma before (and after, if mid-) when used to address a person. If it’s an action related to words (asked, growled, sobbed, whispered, etc.), it gets a comma to go with the quote mark; if it isn’t related (looked, glanced, stood, etc.), it doesn’t.

A good addition to the series.

I enjoyed this book it is well written and paced nicely. The Hyllis family has been forced to leave their homes but they continue to grow stronger as a family. The MC has started to take charge and grow into his role, but he is doing it in such a way as to make everyone miss the fact he is responsible for the good things that happen. Overall it is a good book.

Very good, but not quite great..

The good guys aren’t quite as realistic as they could be, and modern expressions creep in from time to time. But overall, it’s a good read, good enough that I’m binge reading the complete series.
For the record, I wrote a series myself that featured telekinetics, teleportation, and a number of other paranormal abilities, but it’s not at all like this series so I’m willing to write this review.
Recommended.

Since I listened to the audiobook I didn't have to deal with some of the grammar mistakes others found. Also, since I read a lot of post-apoc fiction I wasn't surprised or put off by the gore. I thought the narrator was good which made it a good book, or at least good audiobook, in my opinion. The premise is fascinating, especially in a genre where all the books these days have similar plots and read alike.

Another amazing story from Laurence Dahners

I have found that I love every book I've read by Laurence Dahners. This series is a bit more violent than normal. I assume it's older than the others I've read, and he hadn't quite hit his stride. But even so, I enjoyed this one immensely.

Love the Continuing Story

Laurence Dahners keeps the pace going strong. There are more snafus in this second book, more errors than in the first, with parts of sentences missing or extra words that don't belong, mostly in the first half. But you get past those easily in your headlong rush to get to the next page.

Not much to add to other reviews. Ah... Small town gossip, prejudice, corruption, brutality and general unfairness. True to the storyline but not a happy space. The core characters kept me reading.

Probably would have just done a rating, but the Amazon wouldn't give perks?.

A good tale

Well thought out, nicely crafted world. Interesting plot line, some characters are nicely filled out. The parents are kinda flat, causing the story to be a bit sticky sweet.
That being said, I'm interested to see how Tarc handles this new issue, and will gladly buy the next book.

Excellent series, intriguing and entertaining!!!!!

Congratulations to Lawrence Dahners for this amazing series. It’s hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.

I like Dahners approach to books. They start with a "What would happen if?" built on strong characters and great events.

I like seeing him here doing his best with dystopian settings and Pizzas and medicine.

Teleported

Another great and interesting book with lots of action and human stories of what you might consider doing under great duress. Cannot wait to read the next book in the series

Nice take

The situations of this PAW is similar to the others. Lose too much population, and society will collapse. The Mental powers of the Main Characters is a nice variation. All in all, a nice read.

Time for the Hyllis family to move on, so they join a caravan

Not able to convince the locals that they were not collaborators, they swap their tavern for a wagon. Life on the road quickly becomes a challenge to their newly acquired but still developing skill sets.

Marvelous! A healer and a stone cold killer in one young body. His sister is no slouch at either herself. I like it!!!

The story itself is ok but the characters have the personality of silicon valley nerds, not the young adults of similar to medieval timeline.
