Following the disappearance of the infamous 'Sword' and leader of the anti-human rebellion, Allie finds herself despised by every free seer in the western world...and most in the East. Hiding in an underground cell to stay alive, Allie struggles with yet another visage of Revik, too, who turns into a feral animal once free of the Dreng.

She only has one shot at saving him, and it means learning more about his past than she ever wanted to know. It also means re-earning his trust, a near-impossible task given what she had to do to get him free.

Most of the other seers, especially Balidor, want Revik dead. Even her brother, Jon, starts to question Allie's sanity when she refuses to admit Revik might really be beyond saving.

Meanwhile, a human-killing disease appears in Asia and a mysterious force rises, known only as "Shadow," boasting an army of powerful and ancient seers...seers with a darker agenda than even the Rooks.

Let's just do a recap of this series. In the first book, he's unfaithful to her with a hooker (many times) and a married woman. In the second book he's unfaithful to her in a orgy and she's raped repeatedly. In the third book she's unfaithful to him and betray him. In the fourth she's sell into prostitution. Now... I think it's a little too much. This series is well written but made me physically and emotionally ill.

“Shadow Seer”, is the fourth and second to last instalment in JC Andrijeski’s “Bridge and Sword”, a dark urban fantasy series, setting in a word reminiscent of our own, populated by “Seers” and Humans, and in which those “seers” who possess psychic abilities, are subjugated by the humans who use them for their own purposes. JC Andrijeski world feels very familiar and deeply alien at the very same time, and is populated with interesting characters, both seers and humans, that often blur the line between good and evil, which makes them all the more believable and relatable an captivates our attention page after page from the start and until the very last sentence.

Andrijeski’s series is aimed at mature readers, and offers a brand-new perspective on themes of love, bonding and fate, with multidimensional characters that try to walk the moral line while finding a way to survive their own personal struggles. This is an adult urban paranormal fantasy series, that crave full dimensional characters and good stories, with a good side dish of action and entertainment, and enjoy following the evolution of the main characters through a wide story arc, that would extent to future instalments, and are not afraid to cross some narrative lines in the name of a good story. Andrijeski’s fluid, fast paced, vivid and always delightful writing style, excels in getting across the actions elements with the added bonus of a good social critique, without disregarding the harsher romantic aspects of the story. A clear recommendation for any fan of intelligent dark (the darkest!) urban fantasy and/or parallel science-fiction worlds, with a single caveat: the ride eventually ends and could let the reader experiencing some sleep-deprivation, as it is very, very difficult to put down, a known side-effect of Andrijeski’s writing, but don’t they said that sleep is overrated anyway 😉

***Fans of Andrijeski’s might already be aware of a previous version of the story (Shadow, published March 2011), this new version manages to improve that already outstanding story, preserving all that make it absolutely formidable and still adding new layers of meaning and character development, new twist and turns, that make this world become even more alive before our very eyes.

Now that the Sword has disappeared Allie becomes despised by free seers in the western and eastern world as he saved so many of them. There are contracts on her life from all sorts of people. She is actually hiding underground with Revik trying desperately to save him and break him free of the Dreng and their control of him. However, when freed he becomes more like a feral animal and she needs to learn much more about his colourful past plus try to get back the trust that she damaged in her actions to get him free. Then something called the "Shadow" starts to rise with their army of ancient seers and what appears to be the darkest of agendas.

OMG, this was a book where we found out much more about Revik and his past (although definitely not everything). So much happened - there were twists, turns, advanced politics, drama, and a most bizarre period where Allie works off a debt. I supposed a great way of summarising it would be exquisite torture. When I read one significant turning point I was heartbroken and I will admit to crying with despair at the stupidity of two people who love each other as much as these two. Great book, well written and building up to more epic adventures and events in the next book in the series. I can't wait as I NEED to know what happens next. Will everything turn out ok or will they continue to torture each other? The writing was clear and easy to read and the plot twists (even the complicated ones) were easy to understand. I definitely felt the thoughts and emotions at times hence my tears. I definitely needed chocolate and tissues to hand.

Should we be worried by just how skilled the author is at designing torture for her characters? Yes, I think we should be very concerned. Shadow took a heavy emotional toll out of this reader. Through fears and anger, laughter and despair, this was an emotional roller-coaster that made me hang on for my sanity – and my dear life. The intrigues get more complex and the counter-plots more dangerous. Even though this book ends on ‘satisfactory for now,’ there’s still so much more story to learn. I’m torn. I wish I could immediately dig into the next book, but I feel like I need break it up with something light and fluffy to have a chance to recover first.

Another exciting volume in the Allie's War series. In "Shadow" the reader is allowed a deeper look into our broken hero, Revik's, mind and past, as what is left of the Seven attempt to break his light from the parlous clutches of Salinse and the Dreng.
A slight departure in style from the previous books, Book IV is a strong follow-up to Book III in both voice and in its nuanced introduction of 'the Shadow,' an ominous new menace in possession of a bio-chemical threat that could end both human- and Seerkind.
As ever, there is vivid imagery, unpredictable twists and turns, and a seat- and mind-gripping ending that will leave you running to pick up the next installment. A recommended read!

Čtyřka začala slibně a byla dobře řemeslně zpracovaná. Retrospektivní pohledy, Revikova minulost, politická scéna...
Co knize ublížilo nejvíce je nejspíše stále se opakující motiv.
Allie a Revika zbožňuji.

Dokážu to z pohledu postav chápat.

Interesting that the author titled the book about the character/s that would only essentially be introduced in this volume. In so doing, she also used her last chapter as a teaser for not just the next book but the next portion of the long arc; which is not one of my preferred devices and usually leaves me feeling mildly pissed at the author and thinking they tried to manipulate me.

That said, Andrijeski is quite good at putting her characters through the ringer and this series is no exception, in spite of it's horrible start. This book was, predominantly, a deep dive into Revik's past, much more so than the novella "Revik" which only focuses on a small period of time in his past. Revik has a very difficult past, and a fairly good bit of it, too. There should be trigger warnings on this stuff, though. It's rapey and all sorts of other things that suggest the lost of autonomy and personal power. Again, it's "the ringer" I mentioned above.

I thought some of the separation stuff with the two MCs was unnecessarily melodramatic and I am becoming frustrated with the inability of these two to connect in any lasting way and get on with it. But if you're looking for high relationship drama this series has it in spades. It is a good vehicle for getting them out into the world to have lives away from each other, however, so I can't fault the author for this too much.

So far each of these books in the series has been better than the last. Admittedly, the first book set a very low bar.

Shadow by J.C. Andrijeski.
4 out of 5 stars.
Allie is now hated by all the seer world. It wasn't long ago she and Revik had run an Op to free all the prisoners at the security cells and blown up the seer registry, meaning that no uncollared seer could be traced or identified. But then she kidnapped her husband to get him away from the Dreng that were using him and his powers, trying to get him to see who the bad guys really were.
All the seers went crazy at hearing that, wanting him back and hating her for doing that to him. How could she collar her own husband, betray him like that and keep him locked up in chains in some godforsaken place?
Bounties are being taken out on Allie and her life is in constant danger, so much so that, they all have to hide away underground to escape everyone.
And then there's Revik himself, he's forced by Allie to relive his unhappy and abused childhood to understand why he is the way he is and what happened to him along the way. Who really did what to him?
Another great book in this series that's worth reading. I'd recommend this series to all interested in Paranormal fantasy, light romance, magic and mythological figures.

I have to say that I liked Shadow Seer so much that I started right into the next book, I didn't even pause to write this review. In fact, I had to force myself to stop reading in order to write this before I got so far into the next book that I wouldn't remember which one was which.

Shadow Seer begins soon after Sword's end. Allie is the most hated person on the planet with both Seers and humans blaming her for kidnapping the Sword. No one outside of Allie's inner circle knows whether Revik is dead, imprisoned, or being tortured. As Allie and her inner circle are holed up in a hotel, a huge crowd is protesting her outside. The protesters are attacked by a biological agent by a mysterious being called Shadow, but no one knows why. Meanwhile, Allie begins working with Revik, trying to help him detox due to his separation from the Dreng. They do this by reliving pertinent times in Revik's life, none of which are particularly happy. Just as Allie's starting to make real progress, they get into a massive fight and Revik pushes Allie away. Where she goes isn't that pleasant, but I was really happy with their reunion in the end, so much so that I immediately jumped into the next book. So, in case you weren't sure after reading my review, I definitely recommend the book and the entire series.

If there is such a thing as being too intense, I think this series would fall into that catagory. Have you ever been reading and have found yourself holding your breath, because of the book you are reading? Or how about sweating and gripping your kindle super tight? Maybe found your neck muscles sore from tensing? Yeppers, that would be this series. So well written you can't put it down because you are living in it with them.

Like "Awakenings" I had a more difficult time with this book, not because it wasn't good but because it was so intense. I ended up taking a break from the series to read some light stuff just to *cough* relax. 8 )

I Don't like spoilers, but I started this book hating Allie and what she had done to Revic, but it really balanced out by the end. The experiences both of Allie and Revic were so hard-core I actually thought "there is no coming back from this." Even though I have the next book locked and loaded and as such know that yes, they did come back from this,...wow...just wow!

Fantastic read if you are looking for something to wake you up!

Pros and cons

Andrijeski
SHADOW Bridge & Sword Series #4 “Awakenings”

When you follow a writer down the rabbit hole that is their creative writing portfolio, a reader has to choose whether to focus on the mechanics of the writing or just wallow in the created world exploring the experience. Ms. Andrijeski's world beckons, making it difficult to focus on the mechanics. I found maybe two tiny typos, far fewer than I find in internet newspapers that duplicate entire blocks of text. That being said, our author has taken the time and care to provide an almost perfect presentation of her literary baby.

I also suppose I could write, "Read this book! You'll never read another book that is so engaging!" However, Ms. Andrijeski has proven that we can expect an "experience" from her characters in their world. I'm coming to expect this level of craft from her. In fact, I've become blissfully addicted. Dare I say, "It's better than chocolate?"

That being said, buy this book. Support independent e-book writers. It is worth your time.

This next segment of the Allie and Revik saga was extremely emotional. While trying to save Revik and get him through the “dreng” light withdrawal, Allie and Revik both have to relive some very unpleasant memories. It takes an unhealthy emotional toll on both of them. Just when things begin to look up, something happens to make Allie leave.

You see quite a turn around for Revik. Once he is well again, he plans a mission to go after Allie. During all of this, we catch up a bit with Chandra, Wreg and a few others. The ending was a semi HEA, but you know the story continues. This author has kept me reading these books back to back, but with the emotional roller coaster, I’m needing a bit of lightness before I start the next book. But I am anxious to start the next book because I need to see where the story is going. Great book and great series!

I received Shadow, book 4 of the Bridge and Sword series, as a free copy from the author, and enjoyed the read so much, I purchased a copy when it became available for sale.

The twists and turns just keep coming! A huge book-- over 600 pages-- Shadow was another intense, multi-layered read. Typical of all Bridge and Sword stories, there was a full gamut of emotions: betrayal, hope, love, hate, anguish, fear, redemption, and more. As with prior books, this is also a book to read when you have time to concentrate, as the complexity of the world-building and seer society, demand the reader's attention. Wonderfully layered with plots-within-plots, and personal agendas that make it hard to tell the good guys from the bad-- Andrijeski has a winner is this angst-filled addition to the series, and I eagerly await the next book, Knight.

This episode of the series is very harrowing for Ali and Revic. I find myself so bound up in the story and the characters that I felt empathy pour out of me while I was reading. Ali and Revic and the others are part of me now and I cant help but feel hurt when they are hurting. They did an awful lot of that before the end of the book. But that is as it had to be, because their journey is a really hard and long struggle, and we the readers are along for the ride. We will have to wait till the very end to find out what will happen to them. As I have said before of this author, she is touched with an otherworldly brilliance that I admire immensely. Each book gets better and better and I wait with baited breath for the next installment.

What can I say about this series that I haven't said already?

I know I have mentioned in previous reviews that reading Allie and Revik's story is exquisite torture.  And that remains my view.  With this addition to the series however, that is really ratcheted up.

My emotional connection with these characters was put to the test.  With each revelation, each disclosure my heart broke for them just a little more.  But Allie's response really resonated.

This is not an easy read.  Don't expect hearts and flowers.  You just won't get them.  What you will get is a tumultuous and emotional read.  With just a touch of hope.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

OMG! Fighting impossible odds to free Revik from the dark corners that control him, Allie is forced to make hard decisions. Then when she is lost, their love for her brings her back from that dark place. Trouble is still in the air not letting them breath at all. This story just keeps getting grittier and it doesn't seem to be any closer to closure. In fact it seems to had a new character added to the mix or is it someone we already know about. It's like a giant roller coaster ride that's still going strong.

Time For Changes

Excellent story! Allie is bent on helping Revik to be rid of the Dreng and her love for him is strong. There comes an impasse in their relationship/healing that causes a rift. Allie helps others but hides from herself and others. Revik saves Allie from the Chinese but he still has a few demons to conquer. The Shadow is manipulating a lot of people and the Chinese want revenge. Read this excellent book and look forward to the next books as I can hardly wait!

An Adult Book

I can think of no better way to give a positive review of this series than to say that I have just purchased the next in the series and am only waiting on my bank balance before the next one too. A warning for readers, this series is by no means YA. The books are written in an adult fashion although easy to read. The sex scenes are strong, the seers being able to feed off each others vibes. A good book!

Flashing to the past

Awesome. What has happened? Hummm....so much explains why Revik is Revik ,but I see that there is more to be discovered. Not only does Allie kidnap her husband but she to is help captive. I cried my heart broke...sniff sniff. I can believe that this is happening ,but it explains so much. The details in the writting, mystery, paranormal sifi, a world within a world, trying to be free will cost so much.

Wow

I love, as I have loved before, the intricacies of the plot lines and sub plots. The characters and the personal fights that they make themselves get through, the choices they make and why. These characters and their journey have become my home! I’m so glad that I made the choice to re-read this series and finally finish the series. Thank you JC Andrijeski for sharing this absolutely amazing world with me!

Before Quentin Black

This is the world Quentin Black and his peers come from. This series is the story of their world, the Mythers, the seers. I cannot explain how these books have affected me as I see those possibilities in our world albeit without seers. How easy mob mentality causes horror. Excellent books.
