"I never heard of it."
"Of course you didn't. It was a global pandemic that infected a third of the world's population, and yet nobody really talked about it. They just got on with their lives."
"And that's the strangest thing about people?"
"No matter how great the upheaval, within a generation everybody's acting as if things have always been that way. It makes us resilient, but it also makes us complacent in the face of new threats."
