Happy Ending

Rate this book
Drew Sterling hates change. Ever since her dad left, it’s been her and her mom against the world. That is, until Laine Loveum returns to town after moving to California ten years ago. Drew finds herself quickly drawn to Laine as their moms rekindle a past friendship, and suddenly, she and Laine are inseparable. However, the feeling of stability in their whirlwind friendship becomes acutely fragile when Laine’s mom forces her to move to a Catholic school, causing her to reevaluate everything she knows about herself. Now, Drew must decide whether to fight for the only person besides her mom that has ever felt stable in her life, or forever mourn the girl she fell in love with.

Laine Loveum has always been adaptable. Her family’s fast-paced lifestyle keeps her on her toes, never giving her a chance to get close to anyone. However, when an incident with her father forces her to move back to Georgia, she finds herself setting roots in the comfort and vulnerability of Drew’s friendship. Having never developed such a deep connection to someone before, especially not a girl, Laine sees religion as the perfect scapegoat to suppress her feelings and follow the path God has laid out for her to live a perfect, sin-free life. Caught in the crosshairs of living out God’s (and her mother’s) plan for her, Laine is forced to redefine her values and pivot from the picturesque future she’d always imagined for herself—even if it means disappointing her mother, upsetting her newfound church community, and finally accepting a part of herself she’s tried so hard to deny.

First off: what a fantastic debut by a young author. Happy Ending is short enough to be read in one sitting. The story grabbed my attention right from the start, and I enjoyed both main characters, Drew and Laine. Because this book is shorter, I was expecting it to be a fast paced, sweet YA romance. Sometimes I find books this length feel rushed and lacking background; however, there was a lot packed in here. Both characters had fleshed out histories and traumas (something they were able to relate to each other about), and although the book itself didn’t feel too heavy the traumas were heavy. The author did not shy away from multiple difficult topics and tackled them head on. I was really impressed (once again, given the length and this being a debut). Because I enjoyed Happy Ending a lot, I did hope to perhaps see more of Drew and Laine’s relationship. Some of it was mentioned and not shown, and I think it would have been really lovely to see. Since the length was shorter, I felt there was room for these additions. I am hoping for some more sapphic works from Jazzy in the future, as this debut felt really promising… curious to see where experience over the years will take her.

I highly recommend Happy Ending to those who love YA romance, like to stories involving religious trauma, and who enjoy a quicker read (perfect summer read in the sunshine).

This is such a cozy, engaging read and it’s perfect for YA fans! I got hooked in with the story and wanted to know what would happen with the characters. Such great queer romance and Hispanic representation. Proud to say my friend wrote it and I hope she continues to put out more amazing works! ❤️❤️❤️ Much love!
