A fast-paced short story set in the world of The Shieldmaiden—perfect for a quick, heart-pounding read between full novels.
The battle is lost. Hedeby is burning. And Eirik is all alone.
As flames engulf the city and soldiers flood the streets, Eirik Raude has one goal—find his crew and escape. But when an old acquaintance reappears, everything spirals into chaos. Now he’s dodging blades, chasing shadows, and fighting to survive in a city falling to ruin.
Getting out alive was hard enough. Staying free might be impossible.
Told in Eirik’s sharp, fast-paced voice, this short story is a must-read for fans of The Shieldmaiden series. Grab this thrilling glimpse into the chaos of war—and the mind of a man who refuses to give up.
You have to like a story that has Eirik in it. This was fast paced and contained a bit of humor since this was centered around Eirik. If you haven't been following the series Eirik is the skald for Tora's crew who gets separated from her during their last battle and the exit from the flaming docks. Eirik is known to get into trouble and this is right up his alley. There are times you feel sorry for him but at the same time I found myself chuckling out loud at what he was thinking. I highly recommend this book and the series. It is a book that is hard to put down.
Poor Eirik! He gets left behind, trampled in the mud, with a city burning all around him. How will he get reunited with his crew, and does Tora consider him expendable?
Eirik is in a really tight spot. He has to do things that he detests to survive.
This little story falls between The Shieldmaiden's Swords and The Shieldmaiden's Choice. It's worth reading, as it provides insight into the motivations of several key characters, such as Arrow and Vagn.
Favorite quote: Allegiances shifted, and the lines between right and wrong blurred.
War is chaotic I really enjoyed the POV from someone lying in the mud wondering just what in the world is going on. As a reader, I myself has always thought that the real action in books was the swinging of swords and the casting of curses. NEVER occurred to this ADHD brain with Mental Hyperactivity that there’s soooooo much more going on inside the brain than outside.
Eirik left behind makes a pact with the devil to get away. Only problem is he keeps putting his foot in it. A tidy tale that bridges the gap nicely between the Shieldmaiden's Sword and the next in series. Plenty of action and some unexpected alliance.
