The System is keeping secrets. The truth is hidden in a war zone. Can answers be uncovered in time to prevent catastrophe?
Arlo and his new party, unwillingly named Fortune’s Folly, have overcome the specter of Orexis. Regardless, the avatar’s goal was still achieved. Now, the fresh allies are holding their breath as they wait to see what consequences this will have on the world, but they’re far from idle while doing so.
As a reward from the System for defeating the avatar’s soul fragment, Fortune’s Folly was given a Get Out of Cage Free Card. The item promises to free them from any form of imprisonment or confinement a single time. However, its power is dependent on the current System phase. Not even the most seasoned Delvers know what the System phases are, and Grotto refuses to elaborate.
In pursuit of greater strength and better weapons to defend themselves against the threats they’ve discovered, the party sets out to conquer Delve after Delve at a record-setting pace. They also take this opportunity to politely ‘question’ a few Delve Cores about these mysterious System phases along the way. After a year of disappointment, the party finally discovers an entity that hints at where they can find the answers they seek. To get there, the party must travel to a foreign nation on the brink of war.
Can the party convince the clashing factions to let them through to their goal, or will they have to cut a bloody path to the truth?
Book 2 in thisrollicking new Isekai LitRPG adventure that features steady progression, intelligent characters who spend time making intentional build choices, and tons of laughs.
It’s not action all-the-time, but Arlo’s life is replete with danger and, more importantly, consequences.
Mage Tank ascends to my top 3 all-time LitRPG series with this installment. First and foremost this series has a great MC. Arlo's intelligence is presented in a way that breaks the cliche mold of egghead brainiacs who are frail and awkward. He's brash, silly, philosophical, and eminently entertaining.
The side characters are also endowed with lively backstory and unique motivations that cause them to stand out. The pace in this novel is excellent, I breezed through this chonk, loving every second of it. The overarching plot which began to coalesce in book one takes on compelling definition while still leaving tantalizing mysteries to entice the reader.
The worldbuilding significantly expanded in this sequel and in particular the LitRPG elements came forward a bit, shoring up a minor complaint I had for book one. If you enjoy this genre, Mage Tank is significantly above par in terms of prose and character development when compared with the field.
Bottom line: this series is a lot of fun. It's easy to read. It has well-developed and likeable characters. The protagonist is a standout when compared to other LitRPG titles with superficial personalities that lack the voice and unique perspective Arlo brings to the table. The writing is elevated well above the often churned out feel of much of the genre. This book had some truly epic and memorable fight scenes. And it's funny! Highly recommended.
The Gang is just start to get there groove on in this book. The banter the blood & fun is heating up! If you enjoy the litRPG with a great group dynamic you have found the story for you! The characters are all from different walks of life on the super continent they all call home. Since the rest of the world is an unlivable super storm..Cornman really does a great job giving depth to each characters different personalities and each have there own beliefs and each country has there own unique culture that gets shown as the story progress. Which leads us to the story. Which Bim! Bam! Boom! Amazing! With the gang starting out in a dungeon of Mimics they start to uncover the mysteries of what is going on with the system and realize things are way bigger than they seem. They know they must keep getting stronger and Arlo believes that teamwork makes the dream work and he will stop at nothing to make sure Fortunes Folly (and his magnificent beard) shines bright!
There was a ton of math and explanations, but still so much more insanity. As someone who is bad at math, I appreciated the skip the chapter for numbers bits. Very helpful. The scale of trouble keeps increasing, let's see what happens next!
If anyone learns one thing from reading the litRPG genre, it’s don’t get overly excited because book 1 in a series is great. I feel the author promised one thing in book one, and has not fulfilled that promise through book two. The first book came across as a portal litRPG with lots of comedy, action, and fun characters in a unique world; then it turned into a litRPG with a convoluted plot which is not driven by the characters. The vast majority of this book is internal monologues and introspection, with the main other focus being pages about how great the world building is. This hardly feels like the same author as in book one, and I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much. I had a hard time reading past chapter 30. Not because something specific happened; there just isn’t much of anything happening to make me want to read more. There are fun fight scenes, and interesting things happening in the world, but the author hasn’t done anything to make me like the characters enough to care. Since the characters didn’t get fleshed out more in this book, everything feels plastic to me. This reads like a book about a world which has characters in it, not characters doing things in a fun world. I’m looking for fun and unique characters to drive the plot forward, so without that I don’t know what there is to keep someone reading. The only thing I can figure is a desire to finish the book and avoid leaving another unfinished. This was my goal, but after another half a dozen chapters where nothing happened, I had to decide this series just isn’t for me.
A good book for what it is. No MC growth as far as relationships with his team.
A good book, full of plenty of power, progression and stat growth. The only problem with this book is the MC and his team have no interpersonal character, relationships or growth. You know nothing about their motivations why they’re there, what they’re fighting for or anything about them. If you don’t mind the book that has basically cookie cutter characters, a likable MC you will enjoy this book. As the series progresses, I hope more character growth will come as the story progresses and less turning the MC into a shoe toy i.e. breaking all the bones in his body, turning his ribs to gravel blowing out the back of his head so that he’s missing half his brain I think with these kind of over the top antics and pages of battles there’s no character growth or side character development. At least that’s my opinion. Read the book for yourself and I’ll see what you think in your reviews.
That was great! Sometimes just reading a book makes you happy! And Arlo and his team have a lot to do if they wanna initiate phase two! Like getting to level 10, who cares about the consequences! So pick-up the book to get happy, happy! As you level-up...
Here a few quotes:
I felt the heat of Xim’s Judgment spell building before it hit. In three seconds it went from hot to “heatstroke warning” hot to “I just leaned against the stovetop after making a stirfry and forgot to turn the eye off” hot to “why am I standing on the space shuttle launch pad?” hot.
The rest of the party made quick work of the mimic-snake-chain. The Mimake. The Chaimic. The Snachic. The Snamain…
“Umi-Doo!” Ealdric bellowed. “Where are you?”
"Say no to drugs. Unless you're a master alchemist with virtual immunity to poison and addiction. Then you can do whatever the eff you want."
It certainly doesn’t instill confidence in a book when your least favorite character from the last book is featured on the cover of the new one. I re-read the first book before this one and could not remember her name. Even now I’m sure I can’t pronounce it. The book lacks vision. What are the goals? What are we delving for? Questions that the characters bring up a ways into the book. Very similar to the first book with no plot cohesion even after it is revealed. War, delving, making friends, or the ascension of gods? The story continues but not with me.
While the first book was a playful, action packed adventure with clever surprises and great characters, this book just feels like filler. There are far too many pages full of rambling introspection and sophistry that can be easily skipped over. The plot develops slowly and painfully with relatively no character development or fun new characters to interact with.
I'll probably wait for reviews of the next book before I continue the series.
This book focuses heavily on the action and adventure aspects of the genre. The characters remain distinct and interesting and the world building also continues to build, but the escalating power of the characters and difficulty of their challenges is the core and best written part of the story.
These books are like watching a pretty good action movie, but next to you is a mediocre comedian who occasionally just goes off into one of his variable-quality routines. Sure, sometimes he makes you laugh, but mostly he’s annoying and overall the experience would be more enjoyable if he’d just button it. The start of the book is particularly bad, but I’d actually urge you to push through it, later there’s usually too much going on for him to go off at a tangent about Mister T and ET having a baby. I hardly ever fantasised about punting the main character groin-first into a cactus patch, for most of the book.
Read the digital book on Kindle and listened to the audiobook on Audible.
I really enjoy this crew and were excited to see there growth there is so much going on with the gods and the system that controls this universe. I love character growth that is tangible and the power ups are getting wild. Looking for are to book 3

I personally don’t like gods and end of world missions. Give me loot and leveling every time. Nonetheless this story was a very entertaining read. The ex lawyer is a very interesting character. He pours his stats into constitution and have like two spells.
Perfect combination of humor and fantasy. An litrpg style book that combines all the elements you have come to love in this genre, the breaks the mold and leaves you craving more.
This is a perfect sequel. More character development, more shenanigans, and more fun! If you are new the LitRPGs this is a good introduction to the genre. As well as supporting a new and growing author and a fun read!
Lots to really like about this book, but it wasn't as good as the first one. It was hard to get into initially, and then just felt hit or miss through the rest of the book. Still enjoying the series, so looking forward to the next one.
I am really enjoying this series! The story, mechanics, and challenges are fun to read and take you on a fantastic ride through imagination. Each revelation has been mind blowing and fun. I am looking forward to the next book.
He did an unseen jump in the story. With no details. The MC has punch of new abilities we nothing about. Also, he totally ignored the loot and the fun events. Don’t understand what is the goal here . But 4 stars out of 5
This sequel was quite fun, and the MC and narration had the same deft touch of irreverence the first book did. Quite enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the next!
Lots of cool info about the quests! Draws you in wanting to know what happens next. Great character development. A humorous and excellent adventure with lots of action!
Note to self: what happened, the first one was great! I was even able to stomach the narrator, whom I normally can’t stand, but this one… just didn’t do it. A shame.
