My first R.L. Merrill book, and I loved it! This novel was unique, and fresh, and full of emotion! I loved all of the characters, and I loved the content.
Jaylene is a sweet, sassy, whirlwind of emotions bent on succeeding in her independence. When her longtime friend, and client, Daryl, asks her a favor, she is swept up in an experience that rocks her world. Literally. The infamous metal band, known as Maggie's Bones, is in need of some serious help, spiritually, psychologically, and artistically. Jaylene, is gifted in all three aspects, as she not only has a degree in counseling, but also is a BEYOND talented tattooist.
She never expected to be asked to not only tattoo a bunch of ragtag sexy rockstars, let alone, help them find their way back to the soul within their art. Not to mention, she's expected to stay with the men 24/7 for weeks. Oh my! Sparks fly, love knocks on her door, friendship blossoms, and hardships are shared. With Jaylene, and the sexy, tortured, rocker Devon *sigh Devon*
The mysteries are revealed smoothly and over time throughout this book, and while that may seem frustrating, it worked really well for these characters because there is a lot of unfortunate experiences in their past and nearly present. Jaylene comes from a broken home, in a way, and is incapable of having too much faith in herself....though Devon teaches her to love herself, and believe in the love that can grow truly between two people. Devon, though, as well as the rest of the band, have experienced a loss like no other, one that has destroyed Devon more than anyone. The loss of Maggie, who the band was named because of.
Through it all though, we get to experience the personalities of all the guys, the love that Jaylene and Devon share, and furthermore how friendship and love can help heal all wounds even those that never truly disappear. Then, there are characters that make you laugh, and smile constantly throughout the book. Like Star, the unimaginably, loyal friend of Devon, the jester, the lover, and the one who has so much faith, you cannot help but want him. Mage, the mysterious lover of the supernatural, the one who can be serious and thoughtful, yet laugh riotously. Then, there is of course, Jade and Marcus...Marcus, you love and hate at the same time (not going to lie, I am intrigued by the thought of downfall over a woman), and Jade (I wish I had gotten to know him better)...he was quieter, yet still loved the ladies.
Not to mention, Jaylene's best friend, Kenz, who is just crazy and fun-loving, and emotional without being obnoxious. She would be my best friend too, if I were in her world. There are of course plenty of secondary characters, who I always want to see more of, Daryl and Marie, I just loved them too. There is not one character who doesn't have a true role in the novel, and it just makes this book much more treasurable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons, the depth of feelings, the friendships, the laughter, the writing, the tattooing (I'm a big fan, got my own!), the music, the diction, and even the setting! Even though I have never had the pleasure of being in New Orleans, I felt closer to the location with the descriptions provided. Plus, who wouldn't love Star, Mage, and DEVON? His accent, his sweetness, his charm, his sex appeal. Ah! I could go on forever.
Thank you R.L. for providing me with a wonderful experience! This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review, and I couldn't be more thankful <3
