Ink and art are in Jaylene Charles' blood. When her overbearing father died unexpectedly, Jaylene quit her internship with a prominent Berkeley therapist and followed her heart to New Orleans. Finding kindred spirits there, she got back to her tattooing roots and realized her dream of owning her own tattoo shop. Jaylene had everything she thought she wanted when five tattooed, pierced, and broken-hearted rock n’ roll boys challenged her to put her skills, and her heart, to the test.
Maggie’s Bones were Metal’s next big thing when tragedy struck, leaving them devastated and at each others' throats. Their label demanded a follow-up to their latest insanely successful album, and they were running out of time. Hiding out in Louisiana to salvage their career, they sought Jaylene’s help. She immediately felt a connection with D, the broken man with the sorrowful eyes and missing smile, but refused to let him in.
Can Jaylene trust that D's feelings are more than gratitude? Can the man with the sad eyes make her accept that sometimes love really can cure the haunted?

I stumbled upon one great gem of a read with RL Merrill's debut novel Haunted. Set in New Orleans, Haunted has an imaginative and unique premise and characters that you feel to the core. But, I also had fun reading this as I came across references to places and music that I know and love. My feelings ran the gamut from giddy to scenes where I felt very heavy-hearted, but the overall feeling that this story left me with was one of contentment and happiness.
There were many facets to the story that I enjoyed, one being the setting of New Orleans. I know it’s partly because I‘ve been New Orleans a few times and that I have familial ties so perhaps I’m biased about its charms. My experiences in the city are so well characterized in all that is Haunted. The depictions of the city, the uniquely creole characters and all their charms, the slight mysticism that is inherent in all that is New Orleans is presented to us with perfection. Now, toss in characters that are insightful and passionate, add a storyline filled with love and grief and learning to move through pain and loss, and we have a very smart read.
As for the characters, at the core of the story is Jaylene Charles. A transplant to the city, Jaylene is a wonderful heroine - armed with a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology, she’s book smart, relatively street savvy, and has a special gift in her talent as as a tattoo artist. Jay’s art directs her and gives her the the ability to get in touch with what people are feeling allowing her to empathize in a unique and almost spiritual way. However, when it comes to a love life, well, Jaylene’s is sorely lacking. But that all changes when she is introduced to Devon Boudreaux and his Maggie’s Bones band mates.
The members of Maggie’s Bones are in desperate need of material for a new album, but the group is also facing a disconnect with each other and experiencing profound grief while mourning the death of their namesake, Maggie Boudreaux. Jaylene’s talent, the ability to recognize an individuals’ path to emotional healing, acts as a guide as the members work to come to terms with each other. In Devon Boudreaux, Jaylene see’s a uniquely tortured soul, a person who is not dealing with his grief and the profound loss he feels, and she steps up to help him find a path towards healing.
The connection between Jay and Devon is immediate but the build up to their acceptance for their feelings and the implications of being together is slow , and much like Jaylene I was instantly endeared with Devon. He is a noble and sincere young man, and when he is in, he is all in. Devon gives Jaylene the devotion that she so clearly deserves. What is so well communicated in the writing is the feeling of this deep and ardent love. To emphasize the transformation that Devon begins to feel the author gives us some amazing lyrics ( A song I can only think to call “Heavy”) that frame up the mystery that is Maggie the impact her death has a Devon.
The cast of secondary characters in Haunted offer so much direction in how the storyline develops. Jaylene would be nothing without her shopmate and friend Mackenzie as she encourages Jaylene to live life to the fullest, to take much needed chances and shake up her world. And the crew, the remaining members of Maggie’s Bones, are what glues the story together. They add humor, drama and the much needed sentimentality that creates the storyline.
With Haunted I couldn’t help but feel as though I was experiencing a weird cosmic connection to the story and the characters and I HIGHLY recommend this novel as a romance genre read, one with punch and depth!!
Absolutely AMAZING!!! I feel like I won the lotto when I found this beautiful gem! An emotional riveting story about dealing with loss and moving forward! Full Review to be posted soon!
I don't even know where to begin! I loved this book from the time I started reading it. It was clear to me that there was certainly going to be a good storyline to follow when you put a tattoo shop, a rock band, and New Orleans together!!
Basics: Jaylene is a tattoo artist who has been introduced to a rock band called Maggie's Bones and has been propositioned with quite an interesting offer.
Devon and his band mates have been touring non-stop for years and have suffered some terrible heartache recently.
Can Jaylene help heal their hurts? Will Maggie's Bones ever be the same or will their lives continue to be overshadowed by tragedy?
For me I found Maggie's Bones so full of love and care. It was honestly a very well-written book that left me wanting for more. I cried several times and laughed as well. The characters leave you wanting to know "whats going to happen next" with them, and when something doesn't go as you think it should you, just want to shout and scream at the page!
I absolutely loved this book! Jaylene is a tattoo artist living and working in New Orleans, and is asked by a good friend to stay with a rock band for two weeks, to tattoo them, and hopefully get them back on track with their music writing after a tragedy. And she does, and she meets and falls in love with the bands lead guitarist named Devon. I became so engrossed in this love story, and these characters, that I wanted to be right there with them! This book is fantastic! I also loved all of the references to the eighties, the music, and the movies. Being an eighties kid, I can relate. I also loved all of the references to new music, and Devons band, Maggies Bones, would be a band I would listen to! I was excited to see what was going to happen with Jaylene and Devon, but at the same time I didn't want it to end! I truly hope there will be a sequel. I will definitely keep this author on my to buy list!
I absolutely loved this book! I love the spirituality that surrounded the book. This was a truly magical story set in a city I love with beautiful characters. Jaylene and Devon were so fun to get to know. I'm really wanting a CD of Maggie's Bones!!! A 5 star read!!
This was the best book that I've read all year. I have never been so involved with characters before. I love it. it has been the best and the only thing that I have won
My first R.L. Merrill book, and I loved it! This novel was unique, and fresh, and full of emotion! I loved all of the characters, and I loved the content.
Jaylene is a sweet, sassy, whirlwind of emotions bent on succeeding in her independence. When her longtime friend, and client, Daryl, asks her a favor, she is swept up in an experience that rocks her world. Literally. The infamous metal band, known as Maggie's Bones, is in need of some serious help, spiritually, psychologically, and artistically. Jaylene, is gifted in all three aspects, as she not only has a degree in counseling, but also is a BEYOND talented tattooist.
She never expected to be asked to not only tattoo a bunch of ragtag sexy rockstars, let alone, help them find their way back to the soul within their art. Not to mention, she's expected to stay with the men 24/7 for weeks. Oh my! Sparks fly, love knocks on her door, friendship blossoms, and hardships are shared. With Jaylene, and the sexy, tortured, rocker Devon *sigh Devon*
The mysteries are revealed smoothly and over time throughout this book, and while that may seem frustrating, it worked really well for these characters because there is a lot of unfortunate experiences in their past and nearly present. Jaylene comes from a broken home, in a way, and is incapable of having too much faith in herself....though Devon teaches her to love herself, and believe in the love that can grow truly between two people. Devon, though, as well as the rest of the band, have experienced a loss like no other, one that has destroyed Devon more than anyone. The loss of Maggie, who the band was named because of.
Through it all though, we get to experience the personalities of all the guys, the love that Jaylene and Devon share, and furthermore how friendship and love can help heal all wounds even those that never truly disappear. Then, there are characters that make you laugh, and smile constantly throughout the book. Like Star, the unimaginably, loyal friend of Devon, the jester, the lover, and the one who has so much faith, you cannot help but want him. Mage, the mysterious lover of the supernatural, the one who can be serious and thoughtful, yet laugh riotously. Then, there is of course, Jade and Marcus...Marcus, you love and hate at the same time (not going to lie, I am intrigued by the thought of downfall over a woman), and Jade (I wish I had gotten to know him better)...he was quieter, yet still loved the ladies.
Not to mention, Jaylene's best friend, Kenz, who is just crazy and fun-loving, and emotional without being obnoxious. She would be my best friend too, if I were in her world. There are of course plenty of secondary characters, who I always want to see more of, Daryl and Marie, I just loved them too. There is not one character who doesn't have a true role in the novel, and it just makes this book much more treasurable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons, the depth of feelings, the friendships, the laughter, the writing, the tattooing (I'm a big fan, got my own!), the music, the diction, and even the setting! Even though I have never had the pleasure of being in New Orleans, I felt closer to the location with the descriptions provided. Plus, who wouldn't love Star, Mage, and DEVON? His accent, his sweetness, his charm, his sex appeal. Ah! I could go on forever.
Thank you R.L. for providing me with a wonderful experience! This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review, and I couldn't be more thankful <3
Haunted is a story in which the author, R.L. Merrill, grabs the readers attention from the very beginning and keeps it with the myriad of emotions that the complex cast of characters display throughout. It is a story of pain and loss; but also of growth, love, and new beginnings. Grab your tissues and settle in for the emotionally harmonious roller-coaster that will have you on pins and needles.
The lead female, Jay, is a tattoo artist who started her own shop in New Orleans with her friend, Kenzi. Jaylene is originally from California but after a major life changing experience she decided to pack up and move to a new city where she could start all over. Jay has made some very dear friends since her move; one who means a great deal to her and has brought her a lot of business is Daryl. To others Daryl may be a little rough but with Jay and his family he is a papa bear; always loving but willing to protect in the blink of an eye. One evening Daryl brings a few men into the shop with a very special request.
The guys who arrived at the shop that evening with Daryl happen to be his nephews and their friends, or as the rest of the world knows them - Maggie's Bones. Maggie's Bones is an award winning rock band who have faced some hard times of their own and are currently in a writing funk. They are hoping that with the help of Jaylene they will be able to get over their hurt and move forward with their career. The special request they have is more of a job offer - spend seventeen days with them, learn about them, then design a very important tattoo for them and in return Jay will receive a substantial paycheck.
Jaylene finally decides to accept and moves her traveling table as well as some of her things over to the St. Germain where the guys are staying. In the following days they all learn a great deal about one another and become very close; some closer than others. Though true to form tragedy strikes again while Jaylene is staying with the guys from Maggie's Bones. They all must face the skeletons in their closet if they want to move forward or the future of Maggie's Bones will be non-existent.
***Throughout the story there are lyrics written by the band and I can't help but wish that it was a real album because I would buy it in a heartbeat!!! ***
Did I read a different book to everyone els who left a review. It's fantastic.. Best book Iv ever read.. Good writing and editing??? WTF are you people for real???
There was so many mistakes in this book it pissed me off. The story was good in its self, but the way it was told ruined it big time and the reason she needed to stay with them was a stupid. There was to much crying, every other page, there was some one crying and it just got to the point where I would have rather read BLA BLA BLA.
Ok so the girl in the book is a tattoo artist but also is a fully qualified shrink. The band are having a bad time getting over a death and hire the girl from the tattoo shop (they have never met) to stay with them for 17 days to help them get there music magic back by sharing there story's with her (they want to share there story's with her, that's what it says) any way. I'm like ok, they need tribute tattoos and she's a shrink so they want to use her talent to sort out there heads and get there tribute tattoos.
On the second day they ask her what got her into tattooing. She starts form been 18 years old and telling them about training to be a shrink and what ever els and they oooh and arr because they DIDNT KNOW SHE WAS A SHRINK??? So why the hell would they want a stranger to stay with them? What made them think she could help if they thought she was just a tattooist?? I don't get it???
it takes her only two days to fall in love with one of the guys and she's so cleaver and can do just about anything yet she can't work out that the girl who died was Devons sister, not his wife? I worked it out in like 10 minutes of reading this book yet a shrink who's fantastic at everything and shrinking 5 guys about the girls death can't work it out. God this book was so stupid I don't even know what els to say. Iv rabbited on and on but this book is just to stupid to have that rating.
If you like instant love, constant crying and books that make absolutely no sense from start to finish, then this book is perfect for you.
** Provided on behalf of the author for an honest review **
** Our favourite quote **
Don’t turn the Fates away when they place something beautiful in front of you. Chances are it’s not likely to be repeated.
How do you ever overcome grief? How do you deal with the constant ache in your chest? How do you rid yourself of the guilt that’s eating you on the inside? How do you mend a broken heart? How do you heal?
This is what the guys from the band Maggie’s Bones are dealing with. Devon, Mage, Marcus, Jade and Star. All grieving differently, but all hurting the same.
Why?
Because they have lost the one person that held them together. They lost the one person that was the very foundation of them becoming Maggie’s Bones.
How will they ever recover, not only as individuals but as a group?
Enter Jaylene Charles.
A tattoo artist. She’s asked to spend time with the band, to get to know them. To help them heal. To design a piece for them, that they can wear with pride. A reminder of who they’ve lost. Jaylene hesitantly agrees. But there is one thing she never bargained for. Love.
Haunted is a story about loss and grief. It’s about heartache and pain. It’s about healing. It’s about love. We simply couldn’t put it down. We fell in love with all the guys from Maggie’s Bones. Each unique with a story to tell. The emotions poured out throughout the pages. You could feel the pain and the hurt. You could feel the turmoil of their emotions. You could feel the love.
A highly emotional read.
We cannot thank R.L Merrill enough for giving us the opportunity to read Haunted. We highly recommend everyone to place Haunted in their TBR list. For us it is a definite 4 star read.
In order for me to give a book a 5, I have to have at least two big things happen. 1 being I must get completely engulfed into the writer's world almost becoming one of the characters myself. The other criteria I have is that I need to have a strong emotional reaction throughout the book. Haunted is really more like a 6. First, understand that when you read this book, it is a dense, heavy read. Honestly, right now I feel a little haunted myself. There really was not the angst factor that kept me going but more of needing to heal right along with the characters. This is one of the best books I have read in a while. RL Merrill has a new fan right here. By the end of the book, I was laughing at unexpected times waking my husband from sleep and then crying at the same time. At one point, I was sobbing a little feeling the pain radiating off the pages. But then I was bathed in a glorious love not only between the main characters but also through friendship and family. It reminded me that family is so much more than blood. Jaylene is an angle who makes this book amazing in ways that I can't really describe. All I can say is don't miss this amazing book. It will settle in your soul leaving you a little sad, a little happy, and a whole lot of love.

After a terrible tragedy strikes the soul of Maggie's Bones, they desperately turn to Jaylene, and ask her to help heal them through her tattoos. They need a miracle to help bring the band back together and record their next album. She goes in very hesitantly promising no miracles, but in the end they all help each other heal more than anyone could have expected.
I LOVED this story! I very quickly was sucked into the world of Jaylene and the nerdy rocker boys of Maggie's Bones. Despite introducing five angsty rockstars all at once, each guy has been given their own personality and story, without being too overwhelming or hard to follow, and I fell in love with each of them.
I feel like we're getting a behind the scenes view on just how dorky our favorite musicians can be. Everyone should check this story out, it was a fast read, but this isn't just a typical steamy romance novel. It definitely has fun, sexy scenes, but there is also a lot of heart in it and the story is well written. I haven't been so upset to not be able to hang out with fictional characters since I read Harry Potter, and that's saying a lot. I was lucky enough to be sent this book and I am so thrilled I can finally purchase it and support such a fantastic author. Read Haunted and then keep your eyes open for R.L.'s other fantastic stories! (Copied from my Amazon review)
The story concept itself was really good and I liked it. I did however feel as if the story dragged on. A lot could have been cut from this story and it still would have made sense.
I like a man who isn't afraid to show his emotions, but this book had way too many tears. I think every 10 pages had someone crying. If it wasn't Jaylene, it was Devon, Marcus, Star.....the list goes on. All the tears were rather redundant. I would find myself skimming when I would see more tears coming. With all the tears the character had, I would have thought that I would have had a few heart twinge, teary eyed moments (because we know what an emotional sap I am) but not a single tear from me. I actually sighed with relief when I got to the epilogue.
But like I said, the concept of the story is really good, but this had so much information that we could have done without. The characters interactions were good and had some really funny moments that did make me grin a time or two.
So......would I recommend this book? Yea..but be prepared for a long read.
R.L. Merrill’s Haunted is an engaging debut. It weaves the tale of Jaylene, a former psychology student, who, after a family tragedy, abandons her studies and her native California to reinvent herself as a tattoo artist in New Orleans. As her client list and reputation grows, she is asked to embed herself with the members of the metal band Maggie’s Bones as their court artist. The band has sequestered themselves at home in the Big Easy as they try to navigate the loss of their beloved friend and manager while struggling to meet the obligations of their recording contract and deliver their next album. All of Jaylene’s skills will be put to the test as she tries to help put their fractured pieces back together. In Haunted, Merrill has created a cast of characters that demand attention. These are people that I know, people I have played in bands with. In one case, someone that I may or may not still owe a few bucks in child support to. They live and breathe brilliantly on the page. And, as such, they pull you through the story as you cheer them on. It is a great accomplishment.
Very well written and edited, with just a couple of issues. This is a stand-alone story with no cliffhanger.
As many other reviewers have noted, this story is a big surprise. Although it is a Rock-n-roll love story, it's more about grief, recovery, friendship and the family-you-choose than the romance.
The lead female character is a trained therapist/tattoo artist who's insightful, frustrating, sassy, insecure, tough and empathetic. She's immersed in the band's internal drama while they struggle with grief, guilt, musical identity, personal identity, friendship, and family. Basically, all the big questions.
This is a New-Adult story, so at times, it's a little angsty, but set in the background of New Orleans, it never feels over-the-top.
Although this is a stand-alone story, I hope there are additional stories written about Maggie's Bones, because not all the member's stories are tied up with a bow.
Strongly recommended to fans of the Big Easy, tattooed musicians and HEA.
I LOVED this story! I was drawn into this world completely!!!! Jaylene and the guys of Maggie's Bones are very compelling!!! :)
Jaylene is a transplant to NOLA with a Masters degree in Psych and a tattoo artist. Her art helps her to get in touch with what people are feeling, helping her to feel what they feel. Because of this after tragedy takes the soul of Maggie's Bones, they turn to Jaylene to ask for her help, they want a miracle to help the band so they can record their next album, she does stating NO miracles!!!! I have never really read a "rock star" type book before so was not really sure going in but now I'm hooked!!! So much fun!! I will be looking for other R.L. Merrill works now!! Love coming across new to me authors :) I'll be suggesting this to all my book friends!!!!
This is one of those books you will thank yourself for reading! The characters and storyline are so well written that you cannot help but be drawn into it. Everything works in this story, the background, the story, the characters, and I could not find fault with anything. What happens to people when they experience grief is as individual as a fingerprint. No two people go through the grieving process the same way, yet everyone can relate to loss and grief. I was drawn in from the very beginning and although I have not read this author before, I will be looking for more! Fate and love play a big part in this story, as well as, the grief and healing process. Such a great read! I will be keeping this book handy because I will be reading it again and recommending it to my friends.
OMG This was such a great read was so well written and such great characters . It made me laugh out loud and also mad me cry in parts she is such a great story teller you go on a ride of ups and downs with this bunch.. It's got a metal band on the way back from a bad and sad time to comming back to find their way back to their music ... Add in a pretty Tattoo artist and her crazy partner who is a big fan of the band and you get a fun time ... I could not put this book down.. so it is so worth the money you spend for this book cant wait for the next yahh thats 5 HOT HOT guys and so great fun .. Happy reading all go get this <3
A tattoo artist gets the gig of her life to create and tattoo famous metal group Maggie's Bones. Jaylene has to dig deep with these guys to figure out what the memorial tattoo will be and who this person was that the group lost. As she gets to know them all she starts to develop feelings for the quiet one known as Devon. Will her feelings get in the way of what she was originally hired to do? This is a great story. The only thing for me is I didn't get the title of the book until I was about half way through so don't give up reading this if your lost on that. Everything gets explained and it all flows together nicely. Loved!
I just finished this and I think I am already having withdrawals!! I love everything about this book! The characters really draw you in and make you want more!! I am not a writer, only a reader so anything I write here will definitely not do this book justice but just know it will suck you in and leave you craving more!! Great storyline with romance and humor! I actually laughed outloud a few times while reading this. I cannot wait for a follow up and find out what else happens with Jaylene & Devon and Maggie's Bones!!
Jaylene realizing her dream of owning her own tattoo shop was one of many capitvating moments in the book. It’s amazing how tattoos can change the lives of both Jaylene and the Maggie’s Bones band members for the better. The connection that lies between Jaylene and Devon is riveting. The characters and the great setting of New Orleans are well written. A good book that has tattoos and the mending of hearts.
Haunted is a must read ..., March 9, 2015 By Raven Wolf This review is from: Haunted (Kindle Edition) I absolutely loved this book. I enjoyed getting to know Devon and Jay , they take you on an emotional ride of heart break and pain. Then lift you up with love and devotion . Each and every character manages to touch you. I laughed & Cried while reading this wonderful book.
This book was amazing. I love the setting, New Orleans. I really love rock stars. Tattoo Girl, Jaylene, was so cool. She was strong and insightful but like all of us she has her own hauntings to deal with. And the love story within melted my heart. I would recommend this book to everyone.
Loved this book! I enjoyed the story and the setting my hometown of New Orleans the perfect setting for a Love story of a Rock Star.I want more. I actually want a book for each member of Maggie's Bones.
This is the second book I’ve read from the author and she writes rock romances. I love rock n’ roll romance stories and the first book I read from Merrill was The Rock Season. When I read the premise for Haunted, I was hooked and the story lived up to its expectations.
Set in New Orleans, which by the way the author does a great job of describing the city and its festivities. The story revolves around tattoo artist Jaylene Charles, who gets the opportunity of a lifetime when she’s asked to stay with a rock band for two weeks as she helps them with a memorial tattoo. During her stay with the band Maggie’s Bones, Jaylene finds herself falling in love with guitar player Devon.
Devon like Jaylene has faced a tough past filled with heartache, but as he and Jaylene grow closer they learn to open up and let go of the pent up emotions.
The story is very emotional, at times you find yourself wanting to shed tears. Jaylene seems like a tough tattooed woman, but deep down she’s someone who’s very sensitive. Devon’s personality is very much like Jaylene’s, he has this gimmick as a tough rocker, but has a sensitive side. Throughout the course of the book, you learn more about Jaylene and Devon’s pasts, and your heart aches for them.
Haunted is a gut-wrenching story; however it does have its light moments. The author adds humor throughout the story with the rest of the band members Marcus, Star, Jade, and Mage. Whether the boys were jamming to Big Time Rush, Mage was talking about magic, or Star was pining over Jaylene’s friend MacKenzie; the characters provided plenty of memorable moments.
Jaylene, Devon, and the rest of the characters were a joy to read. I’m hoping this isn’t the end for Maggie’s Bones because I want to read more about the band, especially Star and MacKeznie. Also, I want to find out if Marcus ever settles down.
