Dammit, where is the next book?

Congratulations Brian on an excellent new story! I'm both Sad to see that I have to wait for the next one to come out, and relieved that I won't get so far behind on all the work that I have.

Congratulations again on wonderful story!

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

What I most like about this author is how unafraid he is to write long, meaty books that allow me more than just a couple hours to read them. This installment took Sal in a slightly different direction from previous books. He's more confident, not meek in the face of other stronger, pushy first-year saviors. Sal simply maintains his polite, well bred demeanor and either chooses to interact, or not.

I very much enjoyed this foray into Sal's determined journey to be all he can be, and a lot more besides. He's unflinching in the face of danger, which was great to see in spite of his amusing inner monologues with himself in the moment to flee as ordered or take a stand against demons he previously used to be terrified of. I'm just a bit annoyed I'll have to wait a month for the next book! Highly recommend this series, this marvelous author! Maximum stars!

For me, just too much crafting stuff and not enough plot movement and action. Could stand to have 40% or so removed and you'd lose nothing unless you're really into the iterative crafting stuff.

I also don't know what to make of the MC. Five books in he should be more confident in his crafting and more focused on his own growth. Rather, he's helping everyone around him while going out of his way to make as little money as possible from his world-changing inventions. Just didn't all come together for me.

The book begins how most of these have begun. Sal is running around like a chicken with his head cut off bouncing between projects. Once it hits the middle he at least has a project and by the end the book actually appears to have a direction and conflict it wants to go towards.

Most characters take a backseat for this one and it's mostly the crafting people. I would love to see more of the world and guild. Even just one sustained thing for any length of time would be nice. Sal really does too much in terms of crafting and skills.

Small character developments here and there but would love to see more since this is the 5th book in the series. Hopefully the next one focuses on one project or activity with a lot more focus on side character development.

Wow, just WOW. Another winner!

If you haven't read the 1st 4 books, go directly & buy them! After reading book 4, I went & joined Brian's Patreon page, where I discovered the individual chapters for this book. It was great to read this book a little bit at a time, but it was frustrating as well! I've actually read this book 3 times now, with the last time just now, over 2 days, but as the complete book this time. Long, enjoyable days!
Based on books 1 - 4 covering the 1st semester @ Quest Academy, I can only hope & pray that more people discover this author, take the time to write good & insightful reviews and that Brian is inspired to continue telling Sal (and friends) stories! If he's inspired, maybe there will be at least 20 more books. [4 per semester, 2 semesters per school year, and 3 total years of college! Not counting any extra books for summer vacation!]
This book covers the beginning of the Mythic Guild, Sal's overcoming his fears and discovering more about his abilities, and so much more!
Please, please, please buy and read this book immediately!

This is the 5th installment, but the story feels like it's still in its early stages. This book feels like playing those RPG games, you finish the side quests before returning to the main storyline. I have no qualms with that, but doing it for 5 books and while still in the side quests made my eyebrows raise.

It is WRITTEN WELL, but the story slowed and made no remarkable progress at all. How can you do that with an 800-page book?

Some conflict resolves themselves, giving no palpable tension throughout the book. It doesn't keep me on edge at all.

This series FOCUSES too much on CRAFTING. That's okay if you're into that, but the book has a brobdingnagian amount of them! The reactions from everyone towards those inventions are funny at first, second, and after that, it makes your eyes roll.

All in all, this series is too focused on crafting, with no apparent progress in the story compared to the amount of pages available; there's not even any detritus of romance, and conflicts resolve themselves. It all comes down to: Did I enjoy reading this installment? Yesn't, but it is written well, and I'm fairly optimistic that the author will turn it around 4/5

Literally can't stop listening to the audio book. Really enjoy this series and the world Brian is building. Plus Daniel and Rebecca just do such an incredibly job creating characters that establishes such an immersive experience.

Not sure what to make of this series anymore. I started it really excited, but I have no idea where it is going for the last couple of books. Early in the series, Sal was just a crafter. He didn't want to have anything to do with fighting. He was pretty much forced to go into dungeons and fight monsters. He used his crafting experience to make gear to give him a leg up in combat. He had a visor, a gun and was pretty good at long range combat.

Then the last book happened. He gave up his gun, and it turns out his father, the auctioneer, was a badass fighter in the past and is now teaching Sal the Silverson arts, a form of martial arts that allows him to fight demons up close. So, what is Sal supposed to be now? A crafter? A close-range fighter? Everything all at once?

The last couple of books have felt like a side quest. The main story isn't really progressing. To be honest I don't really know what the main story is. Sal is in Quest academy, a school that is supposed to help him learn but so far, he is just doing things on his own. The overall goal is to fight demons and except for one instance in this book there hasn't been much info on the state of the world and how that war is going.

Then there is the crafting. This is something that I was really interested in, but Sal is all over the place with his ideas and builds. He keeps being told he needs to slow down and learn the basics but then he gets an idea in his head, goes into a flow state and ends up making another Mythic grade piece of equipment that is going to change the world. I never hear anyone mentioning slowing down after he does this. Before we even see he effects of what his invention can do, he is off making some other crazy thing. I just wish there was more structure to what was happening.

The idea of have of this series is better than the actual series. I listened to the audiobook and out of the 17 hours, there really was only about 5 hours that were interesting and only about 2 hours that were really good. That doesn't sound great, but those 2 hours are what bring me back to this series over and over again.

The issue with this series is that the story is in conflict with the natural progression of where the core concept wants to go.

Sal has no business whatsoever being in Quest Academy. His abilities are far too advanced and overpowered for him to be in any kind of traditional learning environment. His story is not that of someone needing an educational structure to help him develop his abilities over time, but instead the story of someone who needs to be out in the world actually doing things.

In our world, it would be the difference between someone who goes to college to learn the necessary skills for a more traditional career path, and those who are more interested in setting their own path and would be wasting their time on college, so they go straight into their own businesses and learn by doing.

This story is at its best when Sal follows his own path. Whether he's working on groundbreaking passion projects, building his guild, or trying to do something revolutionary to help win the war, this story shines. When he's forced back into a school environment, or down paths of story tropes associated with YA magic academy stories, or into more traditional action hero roles, the story struggles because it feels unnatural.

I thought the core concept of this series was that an OP character in a support role could have more of an impact than any one traditional hero might have alone, no matter how powerful they may be. When the story sticks to that and the natural path progression of that story, it's awesome. When it forgets, it becomes a chore to read.

Overall this is much the same review as the last book. When it is bad it's difficult to stay interested, but when it's good it's genuinely great and keeps me eager to come back for more. Therefore the rating is split down the middle at about 2.5-3 stars.

My KU experience this month was consciously choosing to read endless back-to-back lit-rpg's, which is a genre I unrepentantly love, but by golly some of the tropes wear on you by the end.

Fortunately this series starts off with a vibrancy and clarity of setting that makes it clear you're actually in talented hands. They're in a future-earth world at war, with civilisation-threatening enemies out there which give them an actual reason to be working so hard to level up at magic school. And although the mc is of course going to end up super-powerful, it's pleasant that here the world doesn't revolve around around the hero, with side-characters just their to praise him for how magnificent and special he is; their friends and teachers are actually also incredibly talented folk with their own overpowered abilities. The mc even gets to have parents who are neither evil nor dead!

One thing which surprised me about this series is how unrepentantly fast it took that levelling. This is not a slow-burn sort of book where they gradually acquire small skills which will build together to eventually make them something unique. No, right out the gate, the trajectory our main character is on is heading straight to epic. The fact that it continues this directly uphill power-arc across all five books currently released is a genuine surprise, but an absolute joy to read.

I can safely say, I don't think I've ever read a series where the author is so willing to have the mc stretch the boundaries of their world so fast, and yet have such incredibly slow internal pacing. At the end of book five, we've gone through about six months total. The contrast is pretty hilarious.

Very much looking forward to the next book coming out later this year.

4.25 Stars. Finally some more demons but not a lot, not enough.

I rate books based on how much I think about them after I put them down.

1) What is marriage based on? Doesn't it have to have an early and strong physical attraction?
2) How many threads are there per weave and what do they connect to?
3) What is the balance of an institution's control over a student?
4) What is the limit of a future vision skill if someone changes the future? wouldn't that just be just another branch?

I very much enjoyed the series through book 5. I'll definitely listen to book 6. As many people have said the economics don't make a ton of sense but if you read it like a westernized cultivation book that focuses on crafting it is quite an entertaining progression fantasy.

The MC is 18 so his understanding of the big picture doesn't really come out to book five. He is sheltered and rich but his parents raised him correctly. I like the focus on the underdog.

The things that keeps the series from being five stars are forgivable but nagging.

The demon threat is thin, unexplained.
The pacing is fairly slow.
Economics is not exactly clear. How are things valued? Two systems.
The incompetence of the new world system is not very clear.

Overall, a fun listen. The voice acting can be a little over the top at times but generally good.

If you dislike things like: gaining praise for super abilities, a healthy relationship with parents, good friendships, etc. you may not like this book. It is not dark at all.

Looking forward to the next.

Legions delivered another great experience in the series. While not quite reaching Mythic levels for me yet, it still landed comfortably in the Epic tier, offering strong storytelling, great character work, and exciting developments that keep the momentum of the series alive.

Characters — Epic (B) - Sal continues to shine through with his skill, creativity, and craftsmanship. Watching him develop new Mythic items is always a highlight. However, I found myself wishing he’d be a little more confident in his abilities instead of second-guessing himself. He’s an incredible talent and deserves to act like it. Still, his growth and interactions remain engaging and leaving me wanting more.

Plot — Epic (B) - The pacing and action hit a satisfying balance, keeping the story engaging from start to finish. My main (positive) frustration is the ongoing slow-burn romance between Sal and Fabi. It’s been teased for so long, and while I know it’s coming, I’m still yearning for things to finally ignite.

Worldbuilding — Rare (C) - The glimpse into the nearby residential areas and the struggles people face during demon attacks added emotional weight and depth. It wasn’t a huge expansion of the world, but what was there was meaningful and grounded.

Emotional Moments - One of the standout emotional beats was . For a moment, I worried the narrative might go somewhere I wasn’t on board with, but Sal stepped up and handled it beautifully. Their interaction was heartfelt and one of my favourite moments in the book. I hope we see more of their dynamic as I love their relationship.

Romance — Uncommon (D) - The Sal/Fabi romance continues to crawl forward at a glacial pace. I’m invested — I just want more movement. Stop being a tease Brian!

Final Rarity Ratings

Plot: Epic (B)
Characters: Epic (B)
Romance: Uncommon (D)
Worldbuilding: Rare (C)
Overall Enjoyment: Epic (B)

A very strong, enjoyable continuation of the series — not quite Legendary or Mythic, but absolutely solid and full of great moments that left me excited for what comes next.

I have now caught up to the series that I started last week, 5 books on audio, 6 days? Jeesh.

This book explores Sal's evolution into a more confident hero, someone who can actually meet the challenges. He's still in his own head, but we get a more and more confident version of Sal as he discovers his power is equal to the challenge. By the end, it's quite a turn around. It's the progression made sweeter by the struggles we've seen him have in the earlier boooks - and that are still acknowledged when he thinks through things.

The final chapter was incredibly moving for me. Or it was 2 hours past my bedtime and I was vulnerable. Or both.

I'm still a bit unsure if the book is going to give us a romance, between Sal and either Fabi or Divinity or maybe even calling back to one of the others now that they've had conversations and as life develops. It's an side that is completely unimportant, but I'm rooting for them all to have good results.

I've been listening to this, but to get the next book quicker, I've preordered the physical for book 6.

a wizard did it

More and more handwave, intuitive flow state until the universe just says “forget it, here have some magitech”. Sal puts together a dream team in his first year of college, builds some crazy items that surpass their maker within seconds of activating, and seem to tap into something larger than a genius prodigy who can’t program if his life depended on it.

I feel this is a slow roll System, other series the System is an all powerful announcement that either teleports people to induction and terraforms Earth, or just instantly changes the world. In this series, the portals are 60 years old, earth has been invaded and humans are just now fighting back with essence-powered abilities.

The throwaway comment about essence infection and mutations that Bastion will experience when they descend from space also seems to imply that something is happening to Earth.

Read this series!

The other day I was telling my friends that I couldn't start anything because Legions, Quest Academy book 5, was coming out on the 14th. I honestly debated on just rereading the first four books. I probably will even though I just finished the fifth book.

I love the world. I love the system that Brian has created. It is honestly refreshing to have a main character who has a loving and supportive family. I'm enjoying the development of the main character as well as the surrounding characters.

Do yourself a favor and start this series. If you've read up to book four then you absolutely have to read book five. I can tell the effort and dedication the author has put into it. If you get started you will as well.

Can't wait for book 6

The series continues to be great. Continues to put a unique spin on litrpg / apocalypse style stories. This one was a little slow. I would like to see more action and a more opinionated assertive SAL!. He has all the leverage. Glad to see him finally thinking about his roll in the larger war. It almost like his OP is being nurfed by inaction but he is making good progress. Its easy to forget the timline is still short on the story. I really want to see a love intrest!! The series would be great with some added tension between Sal and a couple characters fighting for him - but he only ends with 1 girl. No harem crap. Also he needs to build a bad ass mech and or bad ass assault vehicle/ drop ship for the guild.

Keeps you wanting more

Book 5 is a little slower than the previous 4 books. The building of new gear is highly entertaining. Sal and the rest of his every growing crew of cohorts is wildly entertaining. I love how Brian easily describes the gear and character so I can picture each piece of tech and gear Sal builds. I want more the second I finish one of his books. I want to watch this books as a tv show this litRpg style is quickly becoming my favorite. The demons he describes has me fully embedded in the book. If you haven't read the first 4 books go back and read the entire series. Worth every second of my time. Will probably go back and start again with book 1 while I wait for book 6.

Myth and Legend, Sal Strikes Again

Quest is by far one of my absolute favorite LitRPG series of all time, second only to Dungeon Crawler Carl. I’ve been avidly following this series since it began and am so pleased that the fifth book is just as incredible as the rest. I’ve introduced all of my friends and family to the series; it’s the perfect blend of crafting, fighting, and character development and always puts me in the best mood. I cannot wait to see what else Sal has in store, and thank you for giving us a closer look at Divinity I’ve missed her! I’ll be desperately awaiting the next book, absolute edge of my seat please please release soon.

Very good. The series really hit its stride for me with the previous book, and this one continues to stride in the right direction.

The one ongoing niggle I have is that Sal's crafting still feels like a missed opportunity given how crafting-centric the series is, and then the MC keeps "magicking" solutions whose function he doesn't even understand. When you compare him to a character like Fabi, who is competence incarnate, it really underscores how unearned many of Sal's achievements feel.

Still, I enjoy the story; I just hope we get to see Sal really become the expert he needs to be to justify his accomplishments in future books.

this getting better and better

The growth of the MC is the stand out for me. Not in his abilities, though those were great, but in his character. It was difficult seeing the protagonist so scared of combat in prior books but it made sense given his upbringing and focus as a crafter. This book gave the reason for why his parents brought him up in that way and how he managed to face conquer his fears and realize the need to face the demons directly.

The series is packed with great characters and action as always while the setting continues to be immersive.

I can’t wait for the next book

Another excellent edition to the series

I’ve really enjoyed all five books. I’m happy to see that a sixth is in the works since I am very invested in these characters.

I love how the world just keeps getting bigger even though Sal is still in the academy. The growth of the characters is not limited to just the grounds of the academy and what an education provides to a student. The portrayal of what education and lived experience can do for a person are certainly delivered in this series.

I’m really sad I don’t have another book to rush off to, but I guess the house won’t clean itself…

Better and Better

This series just gets better and better as it matures, with more expansion from the Academy classes and a bit more of the historical world building Norden really grabs my interest.
Sal is a well rounded character and his interactions are quite easily well humanised despite his power and his empathy towards being a worthwhile Hero.
Also glad to see some more from other students giving a different perspective and not just focusing on those we know now from an integral part of his Team/Guild.
Looking forward to just what else we may expect in the future.

Another Killer Series Entry

This has fast become one of my favorite series.

The story, the characters and the Crafted world are extraordinary! Engaging, lifelike, lovable, hatabor, despisable - they bring out true emotion. You can't ask for more!
To ready for this release I reread the first books in the days leading up to it, so it would seem as if I was reading it as one big volume.
It flowed seamlessly through all 5 "episodes" as if it was just a single continuous story.

Write faster Sir Nordon - I need more of a Mythic fix!!!!

What a disappointment

This book was a huge let down. It's a meandering roller coaster of making characters too or nerfing them or both, the plot is all over the place and there's no real progression of any value. A few things are built and some boxes checked but nothing of consequences. Fight scenes are so hyperbolic they belong in some kind of manga or anime. It's really sad as this series started out with potential but book after book it disappoints as the author has so much trouble with cohesion.

Best one yet

I rarely remember to write reviews for books after the very first one. This one was so above and beyond some of the other books that I feel like I should leave a comment. If you've been reading the series and are not sure whether or not you want to continue , the answer is yes you want to continue. I was not sure where the book was really going to go but in the end this was great. I cannot wait for the next one I know that is somewhat cliche , but it's the truth.

Read overnight...

I can't wait for the next book in this series ... it is unique and strangely addictive with a lead protagonist you just can't help liking. Character development and world building are captivating. Please let the next book be released soon! A bit rude I know especially given this one has only just been released. What can I say, I just love to read and this series is an addictive pleasure. Want a review of the book heavy on details? Don't stop here, just read the series to date. I love Kindle Unlimited - best subscription investment ever!!

I wonder if authors are using bots to create 5-star reviews.

The writing has been on a steady decline, the plot is all over the place, and the character's personality seems to shift with every new interaction. The story continues to suffer from pacing and editing issues. The biggest issue is that the author made Sal too powerful, too early, and has to contrive stupid ways to nerf him, such as "Sal can't use Skill Master on days that start with T or S."

I do like the setting with the war against the demons, the magic/skill system, the guilds' conflict, and some of the crafting.

I think it's time for a time skip.

It feels like nothing new happened. Just more crafting. Why is he even at an academy if he learns nothing from almost all of his professors. This series is getting slower and slower.

I say jump to a time when people stop caring about mythical gear. To when Divinity can see the future but that doesn"t help because it is such a huge challenge. And to when they are out of the academy.

There is no magic at this academy, time to look elswhere.

I do like the series, and I will continue to read it. This book was just slow and repetitive.
