Solène gave up on happy endings. Desiderio is done with safe choices. Neither is looking for love—but when they cross paths on a crowded rooftop in Brooklyn, the pull is instant. Irresistible.
What begins as flirtation ignites into a night of wandering the city, sharing secrets and developing a connection that happens once in a lifetime. But when the sun comes up, the question isn't whether the night was real. It's whether they're brave enough to risk everything for what comes next.
Ready or Not is a sultry, heart-stopping romance about giving love a second chance, instant attraction, and the kind of night you never forget even if you tried.
Olive Winter writes all kinds of fiction—Romance, Fantasy, Thriller, and Horror—because why pick one when you can have it all? A Black AuDHD poet turned storyteller, she channels her emotions into characters who are as real as they are unforgettable.
When she’s not spinning stories, Olive’s probably baking something delicious or replaying Beyoncé’s No Hands To Heaven for the millionth time... or finding a new hobby to add under her belt of long lost hobbies she's tried.
This is a short novella, so I'll keep my review short: this is a very fun debut, and I'm excited to keep reading more in this series! The prose is very engaging, relatable to me as a Black woman, and has moments of being really beautiful. NYC is alive and lively in Ready or Not, and both Black and Dominican cultures are displayed through community, food, and music in a way that I genuinely enjoyed! This is, at its core, a story about taking a chance on yourself and a chance on love.
With that said, I knew this was going to move quickly due to the page count, but I personally did not buy Solène and Desiderio's love story/journey. Things moved extraordinarily quickly between them. Also, the clothes issue was such a non-issue that I got annoyed that the discussion—or lack thereof—surrounding it took such a huge chunk out of this story. As an extremely anxious person, journeying with two extremely anxious MCs who lived in their own heads got…taxing? Unsure of a better word than that. There is a lot of hand wringing and bellyaching between the two of them over small things and it made me wonder if I'm this way as well LOL. I wish there had been more dialogue between the MCs and a natural progression for things.
This one felt a little sentimental to me as a Bronx girlie, especially because of the personal connection I had to the setting and character. It’s a really cute story, heavy on the romantic chemistry rather than steamy romance, and it worked as a nice palette cleanser for me.
The only reason it wasn’t a 5 is because both characters were overthinkers. We spent more time inside their heads with internal thoughts and conflicts than actually witnessing dialogue, and that got a little boring. I also felt like the character info was a little lopsided we learned a lot about Sol and a tiny bit about Desi. Another personal pet peeve of mine is when authors plug a paid service for more content. The book wasn’t long enough for you to suggest we go to your Patreon for additional material about characters we just met.
I also didn’t love the epilogue. It was essentially just another chapter, and while it tied the story up, I expect epilogues to be set further out than five months. The story was concluded, yes, but it still didn’t feel finished. I do think the author is talented but I definitely need more dialogue between characters.
Ready or Not is the kind of novella that sneaks up on you-funny, flirty, and surprisingly tender. Olive delivered a New York summer romance that felt alive: the heat of the city, the laughter of close friends, and those late-night moments where love feels both terrifying and irresistible.
Desi? My Dominican king. He’s sweet, charming, and has that quiet confidence that makes you want to follow him anywhere. The way he listens, the way he speaks (yes, in Spanish too 👀) it’s giving dream boyfriend energy. He’s soft without being weak, sexy without being overdone. Solène? She’s a whole force. Guarded, sharp-witted, protective of her heart until she realizes maybe love isn’t the enemy after all. Watching her soften without losing her fire was everything.
Together, these two just fit. Their chemistry was electric…slow burn, but when the spark finally caught, it was hot enough to make me blush. And yes, the spice was spicing, but what really got me was how consent-driven and intentional it all felt. That’s romance.
The banter had me cackling, the playlist had me vibing, and the friend group had me wanting to insert myself into their circle. It’s rom-com energy with depth, balancing the silly grins and giggles with scars, fears, and the courage to try again.
This was the perfect bite-sized summer romance. It’s playful, steamy, and heartfelt. I’ll be rereading just to relive that NYC night vibe. Olive, you’ve got me hooked for whatever comes next, thank you for the ARC.
This was the like that perfect bite of something sweet. Just warm, sweet, and delicious! There is always something so dreamy and almost otherworldly about a well written contemporary romance that takes place in New York. I don’t know how you can feel nostalgic about a place you’ve never been, but that exactly how I felt reading this short. It was thought provoking, reflective, with almost a YA feel. Like how with young love everything feels new and possible!! (And pointed out exactly how I ended up in my feelings over a lil fwb from the DR when that want even the time I was on!!! Why didn’t yall warn me!!!) I’m so excited for all the possibilities for this debut author. This friend group seems like they are going to be a lot of fun.
You know how the miscommunication trope can be hit or miss? Well, this sweet and spicy novella is a definite hit. Hot Dominican Desi can’t stay away from the Black brunette baddie that is Solène—and honestly, who could blame him?
From strangers to lovers, their instant attraction crackles through the pages of this fast-paced read. He’s pining hard. She’s overthinking every move. But then—one night, a near-spilled drink, stolen glances, empanadas, smooth jazz, and fiery passion shift everything.
Nothing could rain on their parade… or could it?
This quick peek at Desi and Solène left me pining . I can’t wait for more from them and this author!
4.5 stars As a debut book this truly did not feel like it. You can tell that Olive Winter has been writing for some time and I’m so happy that she has entered into the literary space. Sol and Desi’s story was real and raw with emotions. For this to be a novella it felt like a novel. I can’t wait to see what’s next for them and the next set of characters!
Short and cute novella. Perfect for tonight. I love Love. Run me a Desiiiiii anytime, any. The yearn was real for “papi” 🤭 but I truly did love the commentary on leaving all your fears and baggage at the door in pursuit of “the one” ❤️🩹
My only complaint about this is why isn’t there more? It was equally sweet and sexy. Solène and Desiderio are both super relatable and fun characters. Their support networks were equally engaging and interesting. I look forward to reading more about these characters in the future.
Once again, I see myself in both of these main characters. The difference is that I know I’m toxic when it comes to dating (or lack thereof) and they’re doing their best to not be toxic lol. And I’m proud of them for it.
This book is beautifully written and I genuinely got misty-eyed when I read that it’s written in Olive’s third language. Legendary. I swear, fellow Black AuDHD people find me on Threads like we’re in a healthy cult and I love that for us! Her writing is right up my alley. The usual ARC errors didn’t bother me one bit, so that’s how I knew I was sat. I was worried there would be a cliffhanger because it’s a pretty short book and it’s book one, but nope! HFN for the win.
I received a copy of this book directly from the author and this is my honest review. Great first book sis; so well done. 4.75 stars for making me self-reflect real bad. I ain’t wanna be a 304 for not pre-ordering but I figured snagging the ARC would upgrade me to just slightly raggedy lol. Also, I want a seafood empanada with my whole heart for the culture. Nah, I changed my mind. 5 stars flat out.
This was such a cute and short read. Although it’s definitely not a slow burn (or at least not my typical style of slow burn) I thoroughly enjoyed their chemistry 💗💗💗 #Soldesi
happy release day beautiful !! thank you so much for an arc!! desi and sol are such a cute couple and i love them so much 🥹 THEY MATCH EACH OTHER SO WELL
"𝔦 𝔩𝔦𝔨𝔢 𝔱𝔞𝔨𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔪𝔶 𝔱𝔦𝔪𝔢 𝔴𝔦𝔱𝔥 𝔪𝔶 𝔱𝔯𝔢𝔞𝔰𝔲𝔯𝔢."
first off, can we take a moment for the playlist?! so many good songs>>>
DESI MY DOMINICAN MAN 🧎🏽♀️ugh i love him so much!! he’s so romantic 🤭 he’s slick with it fr and he’s so understanding to sol about her hesitations 🥹 i would go absolutely anywhere with him LOL i’m head over heels!! omg him talking spanish has me melted 😩 also the dominican rep warmed my heart so much!!
I LOVE SOL SO MUCH 😍 she’s a baddie who protects herself but at the end she realizes it better to take a chance on love and we love that for her!! her and her friends had me cackling LOL she’s so real though
their chemistry>>> i would give a lot just to be a fly on the wall and to giggle 🤭 olive had a girl twirling her hair (hypothetically cause i ain’t twirling my curly hair after wash day LOL) this story was perfect and it deserves a million stars 🫀
if you’re looking for a book with new york summer night vibes with an amazing friend group/found family, sizzling romance, a cinnamon bun mmc who yearns and second chances, this novella is perfect for you 😘
I knew I was a lover girl damn this one is short but so sexy and steamy. Miscommunication is not my cup of tea but I’ll reread this book again and again because Desi and Sol little story made the gloomy weather in France hot as hell right now.
Ready Or Not was such a fun read! It’s set in New York during the summer which also made this a wonderful summer read! Hehe.
This story will have you laughing out loud right from the first line and then have you kicking your feet up in the air and squealing. I even wanted to shout at one point and be like REALLY GIRL?! and SERIOUSLY MAN?! lol but all in a good way. I swear I had a silly grin on my face while reading this book. This story was heartwarming and reminded me of all the things we love in romance movies and stories but was original with characters who were given depth and so much care in how they were written.
We get to see our characters over come scars from heartache, facing uncomfortable truths/fears and taking chances because they deserve those happy endings. But we also get to see so many happy and exciting moments too.
I highly recommend this book if you love~ ✨Romcoms/contemporary romances ✨Slow burn with a little angst ✨Spicy open door romance ✨Humor/laugh out loud moments ✨Strong friendships ✨A MMC who goes after the girl ✨Lovable/swoon-worthy characters. ✨HEA (and with an epilogue)
This story is open door/spicy with one major scene that was passionate, sensual, and hot enough where you’ll need a cold drink and an ice bath lol. Oh! And Des was so consent driven it made my heart swell. The spice was spicing 🔥🔥🔥
Overall, this story was a 5/5 for me. It was also a quicker read, so perfect for your day out in the sun somewhere with a cold beverage and a moment to relax.
To expand my review, I do talk about the characters if you’re curious!
I absolutely adored both main character. Solène especially. This woman is a successful and independent heroine but underneath that, we get to see some of the real complexities of what makes her who she is and why she makes some of the choices she does. I love getting to read characters who are real and complex and not stuck on a trope. Solène is successful and independent like I mentioned, but she’s also loyal, caring, creative, gentle but not a wallflower by any means, not typically a risk taker but will take risks when nudged (especially from her amazing friends hehe), and she’s insightful. She has been hurt over the years and watching her journey and growth was such a wonderful ride. I love her such much.
And Des! Omg. Olive wrote a dream worthy book boyfriend. He’s a cinnamon roll of a man with layers that will surprise you. He’s creative and thoughtful. Despite his history with romance (I don’t want to give spoilers so leaving it at that), he isn’t afraid of/doesn’t give up trying to make connections. I think I loved that most about him. He has so much care in his heart and so much to offer someone and I’m so thrilled he found Solène because they matched better than anyone could have imagined. They are perfect 🥹 oh and don’t forget the nicknames he gives her 😭🥹
And lastly, the side characters! The FRIENDS! When I tell you that Olive writes some amazing friendships like it was magic, I mean it. The characters we meet in the story had me laughing and also swooning because we all love seeing strong friendships. Even Desi’s friend when we get to see him had me cackling and glad that even our MMC gets to have that kind of relationship. It’s so refreshing to see these types of bonds in stories because it not only allows us to get a deeper glimpse into who our main characters are, but we get all the happy feelings that comes with healthy and successful relationships even when they aren’t romantic.
I can’t wait to see what Olive has in store for us next!
Overall, I think you should read this book! Lol you won’t regret it.
Disclaimer! I received an advanced readers copy from the author. Thank you so so much Olive for allowing me the privilege to read this early! I absolutely loved it!
READY OR NOT made me like two tropes I don't normally enjoy: love at first sight and big misunderstanding. I don't know whether or not I should be mad about that, because now I feel like I can't say I don't like those tropes anymore! But on the other hand, there's just something so magical about this book that makes you feel like you're trapped in a glass snowglobe of New York City, falling in love for the first time, and trying to feel brave enough to hold that cold, electric burning feeling in your hand.
Solene wants to be brave but she just had a terrible breakup, and apart from her friends, she has trouble letting herself feel like she's enough with other people. When she sees her ex living it up with the next girl on a rooftop bar, it's like a stake through her heart. Then she meets Desi from the Bronx, who sweeps her away with his charm when he invites her to get away. They have a magical night, going for food, drinks, and music, all highlighting everything that NYC has to offer, and then he invites her to her place, where it gets even better... before it gets worse.
I really related to Solene a lot. I recently read a book where one of the characters said "I'm good at being hurt but but at being loved" and I thought about that quote while reading this book because I felt like it applied to Solene, too. And Desi was like this perfect, charming himbo of a guy who was also so confident that he was also a bit of a doofus when it came to reading the room, and I liked that, too. It's hard to pack this much development into a novella, but Winter did it really well. I've only read one other novella about love at first sight that I really enjoyed, and that was LIKE NEON MORNINGS by Shiloh Sloane. If you like that author, you'll probably enjoy this, as well. Both are about flawed deep love in the big city.
Ready or Not is a slow-burn novella that explores love at its most vulnerable, the stages where we’re still growing while trying to create connections. The story follows at a natural flow that draws you in from the first scene. Similar to the vibe of a bomb 90s romance, we see these characters burn slowly until a full flame ignites—the vibes was sultry attractive while also invoking you to reflect on allowing life to guide you, to not attempt to control life’s natural flow…no matter how much it feels safe.
I saw myself in these characters, Desiderio and Solène were two halves of a powerful emotion. Desiderio is a papi with every level of swag and jokes, but his inner workings showed us a vulnerability I loved. Solène was trying to find her way are being hurt before, and her evolution within her character was just stunning. In addition to the characters, I was enamored with the world building. The environment felt tangible, and the infusion of cultures was something that was truly cherished—it felt authentic and meaningful.
This story was such a fun time! It had me laughing, blushing and reflecting on myself all in one sitting.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to ARC Read! I promise you, Ms. Author has a forever fan out of me!
This was a new to me author & she didn’t disappoint. This read gave all the feelings of a summer night in NYC . While this was a Novella i think the author did a good job with pacing this story. The instant connection the characters felt, the yearning & the man desi was .
While i did enjoy the book it was things that annoyed me . I think the FMC was too much of an over thinker for me.At times i got annoyed because he reasoning was so stupid to me. I honestly didn’t know female took folding clothes as a sign of being kicked out. I enjoyed the dialogue between the FMC & her friends group. I loved that the group each had different personalities & thats needed . Solene really needed to hear the truth about herself & her actions .
The playlist the author made for this book was chef kiss & the drink & food recipe didn’t go unnoticed. I really like when authors give readers something else besides their words . Cant wait to read other books from this author
Oh my gosh! This took me right to New York!!!! 🥹🤍 DESI BABY!!! You have my heart and I don’t play about you.🥹🥹🥹 Sol, baby, you are too pure for this world. I’m so glad they finally found each other and their relationship is so freaking cute to me. The one night stand was a new trope for me, and I unexpectedly loved it! The author did such an amazing job showing and describing the whole atmosphere. I was ready to book a flight! 😭 Desi and Sol are exactly what I needed, and this really was refreshing. 10000/10! ✨🤍
Okay this gave me all the New York summer night vibes, what a perfect little summertime novella.
I could literally feel the chemistry between Sol & Desi coming off the page, I felt like the pacing was perfect and even the way the miscommunication happened and was handled was just excellent. I love when even in a short story you get great character development.
Also I’m obsessed with the author’s writing style, I’m super excited for the next one!
Thank you so much to Olive Winter for the ARC, it was a pleasure!
Ready or Not has my heart. This was a very, unapologetically black book and I loved it! I do wish it was a little longer simply because I wanted to see more of them, but the shortness suited the plot perfectly! The yearning, the chemistry, even the banter kept me smiling throughout the entire book. The interactions between Solène and Desi were so enjoyable, I honestly found myself loving them in such a short amount of time.
Olive’s writing was very poetic and beautiful, it was easy for me to sink right into this world and these characters. Looking forward to so much more by her!
Beautifully written novella! Shows you what love can look like when you push through your fears, your doubts, and take a leap of faith! And how even the love that you need comes when you least expect it. I tore through this in less than 24hrs I loved every second! Soo many real lessons to take from Sol & Desi’s love story. 5/5 for me!! Bring on the rest of the Nape series I’m ready! (**side bar: I HIGHLY recommend listening to the Book Playlist as you read along. Chef’s Kiss. And can’t wait to try some of these food recipes girl!)
This was a quick and easy read with a mix of banter, emotion, and romance. The story follows Solène and Desiderio as they spend one unexpected night together, opening up, wandering the city, and connecting in a way neither expected.
There’s a nice blend of feelings, some heat, and a bit of angst. If you enjoy fast-paced, one-night-turned-something-more romances with a hint of second chances, this might be worth picking up.
If you love insta love with complicated charcoal this one is for you.
This one dives in quickly and takes you on a rollercoaster. Now while they pmo with the folded clothes debacle lol. (I never even heard of that ). It was still a cute light hearted story that encourages the readers to get out of their head and it's okay to fall in love and take a chance.
I'm proud of Olive fer her debut. I can't wait to see how far you go!
I truly enjoyed this one! It was fun, engaging, and heartwarming. That feeling of young love-we-can-make-it-if-we-try was all over Sol & Desi!
The dialogue was smooth and the setting was the perfect scene. I could see this on Broadway as a musical because it gives all the feels of “love will make a way.”
I want more!
So to quote, “I don’t want last night to be the only thing we have.”
The way the author weaved in the words in such a poetic way to describe both DESI AND SOL was beautifully constructed. It definitely pulled all the emotions out of me as a reader and she left me wanting the physical copy on my shelf to be displayed along side of the other love stories that stayed around longer in my heart. New author to me, definitely will be reading more.
Desi & Solene had major chemistry which led to a one night stand. However, past trauma hindered them both with communicating what they feel which left room for wondering and spiraling. In the end, they got it right and took a chance on one another.
Olive Winter is so incredibly skilled at crafting dialogue and building these wonderfully immersive worlds where you inevitably feel like a fly on the wall, watching as a toe-curlingly good romance unfolds before your eyes. Ready or Not was such a perfect summer novella, sweet, spicy, funny at times, and so relatable at others. 5 stars!! I loved every second of it!
