Camilla Sten is a writer, and her publisher made the mistake of letting her set this author page up by herself. She is best known for her internationally bestselling novel "The Lost Village", which has sold to 19 countries, and has written books ranging from YA fantasy to contemporary thrillers.

Camilla lives in Sweden with her American boyfriend and two fluffy, evil cats. She is quite enjoying talking about herself in the third person, and might keep it going after she's submitted this author bio.

En trevlig bok för tonåringar. Jag hade förväntat lite mer skräck än fornnordisk fantasy, men det gjorde inget. Detta var ytterst underhållande med flera överraskningar också för en vuxen läsare.

I yttre skärgården bor en mobbad 13-åring, Tuva. En dag räddar hon sin klasskompis Rasmus från ett okänt öde. En annan klasskompis försvinner, liksom många gjort på sjön. Vad är det egentligen som händer? Det är omöjligt att avslöja mer utan att sabotera. Rekommenderas varmt i ålderskategori 11-14 år.

When the school has an orienteering activity in the woods, everyone but Tuva pairs up. As she goes alone, a strange fog creeps up--she sees two boys from her class, and one of them vanishes. There's a concentrated search for the missing student, but Tuva talks to the boy who was still there, and he confirms that he saw some supernatural creatures around when his classmate disappeared. Koulukiusaamista ja kauhufiilistä. Alkoi hyvänä dekkarina, mutta harmittavasti kaatuu sitten kuitenkin fantasiaan.

Etsinnässä olisi enemmän realistista jännitystä, metsänpeikot ja merenväki on turhan nähty.

i could not connect with the storyline, it felt weak in my opinion. i felt there could have been some developments in some areas. the supernatural element in the book didn’t appeal to me and felt awkward for the plot. overall, it is a quick summer read.

Jag gillade boken mycket; den gick snabbt att läsa och det hände mycket hela tiden. Dock saknade jag något – kanske för att jag inte är målgruppen egentligen. Därför känner jag att tre stjärnor blir bäst.

Boken är väldigt mörk. Det känns hela tiden som om det ligger dimma över hela berättelsen typ? Det är mörkt och grått hela tiden. Ibland ville jag gråta för att jag tyckte så synd om Tuva.

Karaktärerna var bra, främst Rasmus och Tuvas föräldrar. De utvecklades under bokens gång och det gillade jag.

En annan sak jag gillade lite mindre var det övernaturliga (ibland). Det funkade bra på vissa ställen, men det är svårt att läsa och ta in när boken annars utspelas i ett helt vanligt område. Det blev ibland nästan komiskt (och det är inte vad författarna ville åt).

Hur som helst tänker jag fortsätta läsa. Jag gillar både Camilla och Viveca. Jag vill veta hur allt fortsätter! Att jag ändå gillar en bok som är skriven med helt annan målgrupp i åtanke ser jag ändå som ett bra omdöme!

Jag har tyvärr läst den här väldigt sporadiskt. Om jag hade läst den mer sammanhängande så hade den nog fått högre betyg för jag kunde ändå avgöra att det var en väldigt spännande och bra bok.

Stockholms skärgård. 13-åriga Tuva är utstött i klassen och hon har inte några vänner. Det ändras när hon räddar livet på klasskompisen Rasmus. I samma veva försvinner en annan av deras klasskompisar spårlöst. Är han försvunnen? Eller död? Det är många som tror att det är Tuva som är ansvarig för klasskompisens försvinnande. Men Tuva är oskyldig. Däremot är det mycket som tyder på att det är mystiska krafter i görningen.

En spännande bok inspirerad av nordisk folktro/mytologi.

Djupgraven;
Den här boken var riktigt riktigt bra! Skulle faktiskt kalla den för en slags ung version av John Ajvide Lindqvists Människohamn! 🌊

Omgivningarna och allt som tillhör i skärgården är detaljerade och intressanta. Väldigt mysig. Man lever sig väldigt lätt in. Lättläst, bra pace och en story som man dras in i direkt. Karaktärerna är lätta att tycka om och sympatisera med. ”Skräcken” är faktiskt rätt otäck men det är samtidigt invävt i magi och folktro vilket gör det mer intressant och inte ”bara en rysare” utan mer en fantasy-rysare. Mycket spännande! Mysteriet byggs upp bra och man kan inte sluta läsa. Ser fram emot de andra två böckerna i trilogin :) 📚

Glömmer ofta bort att det faktiskt är en barnbok. Huvudkaraktären Tuva känns inte som ett barn på 12 år utan äldre. Det är både bra och dåligt. Jag kan tänka mig att någon i just målgruppen 9-12 faktiskt kommer få det svårt med den här boken i vissa delar. Bara för att huvudkaraktärerna är barn blir det ju inte automatiskt en barnbok. Det märks lite under själva mysteriet kring Tuva som känns förutsägbart och DET är anpassat till målgruppen men det är endast då det faktiskt märks.

+ väldigt skönt att läsa en bok utan triggers. Det är så oerhört tröttsamt och att äntligen hitta en bok som passar vuxna UTAN sex, alkohol, droger, våld, relationsintriger osv är sååå skönt! Därför är den perfekt för människor med den sorters trauma, som jag, utan att det känns som om någon ”talar ned” till en, som det lätt kan bli i barnböcker. Så jag skulle rekommendera den här till alla som gillar skräck, magi och svensk folktro. Både för barn och för vuxna!

Viveca Sten a probablement voulu chaperonner sa fille dans l'écriture de cette série (juste en apposant son nom) car celle-ci nous entraîne dans un univers différent des Meurtres à Sandhman. Cette fois, on pénètre dans le monde d'une adolescente solitaire (Tuva, douze ans) qui vit avec ses parents sur une île mais qui va également se découvrir des origines hors du commun.
Ce roman ne nous sert pas une histoire très originale : tout commence par la disparition d'un camarade lors d'une sortie scolaire puis survient la révélation concernant Tuva. Et là, on entre dans une sphère fantastique. La grand-mère lui fait quelques confidences et la rassure sur son état mental (Tuva fait souvent des cauchemars, entend des voix ou aperçoit des ombres). Elle comprendra pourquoi.
La suite est encore plus surprenante mais on en oublierait presque l'énigme initiale car on baigne en plein contes et légendes nordiques. Moi qui avais été séduite par la première partie du roman - cadre insulaire fabuleux - j'ai trouvé le retournement de situation inattendu. Par contre, le rythme est plat et le dénouement assez insolite. J'étais moyennement convaincue.
Pour l'heure, ce premier tome est davantage confus et vise surtout à planter le décor (fascinant avec son ambiance brumeuse) et à présenter les personnages (la famille de Tuva entretient jalousement un secret devenu trop lourd à porter). Manque encore de matière pour soulever une foule en délire... selon moi.

Vad händer egentligen på skärgårdsöarna när alla turister har åkt hem? När öarna befolkas av de få som valt att bo kvar.. Tuva är tolv år och en outsider, de andra i klassen tycker inte speciellt mycket om henne, hon håller sig för sig själv och har en ganska speciell relation till havet. Det är höst och miljön i boken spelar mycket på just mörkret, kylan, den lömska dimman.. Det är väldigt mycket miljö och natur, en hel del beskrivningar och framför allt havet - eller snarare det som lurar under ytan..?

Det är spännande, väldigt spännande till och med - bit för bit får vi läsare reda på mer och mer kring vad som händer och det är fokus på nordisk mytologi, nordiska väsen vilket jag tycker mycket om. Samtidigt är det också en skarp samhällskritik, eller snarare uppmaning, om hur bottendöden på Östersjön brer ut sig och hur det påverkar livet i och runt omkring havet och hur vi kan förändra den annars dystra framtiden. Det är en tidvis ganska långsam bok, vilket jag välkomnar, där det finns tid för karaktärer att lära känna varandra och där det inte alltid måste hända saker på var sida. Absolut en av de mest spännande böckerna i höstens utgivning!

Ulkopuolisuuden tunteesta kärsinyt päähenkilö tajuaa vähitellen, että hänen varhaislapsuutensa veneonnettomuus ei ehkä sittenkään ollut onnettomuus, ja että arvet kaulalla eivät ole mitä tahansa arpia. Ympärillä tihenevään tahtiin tapahtuvat onnettomuudet ja katoamiset tuntuvat liittyvän toisiinsa ja moni ihminen tuntuu tietävän asioista enemmän kuin myöntää, mukaanlukien oma äiti ja isoäiti. Magian ja taikaolentojen pariin päädytään.
Kauhua vai jännitystä, mihis tämänkin laittais? Fantasiaan nyt ei kuitenkaan.

Fantastiska miljöer, jättespännande!

En conclusion, La fille de l’eau est une très belle surprise ! J’ai été ravie de découvrir l’archipel de Stockholm et une part de sa mythologie à travers ce roman très addictif.
J’ai vraiment hâte de découvrir le tome deux. Je conseille à tous cette lecture !

I was looking forward to reading this. I bought the whole trilogy, ffs.
If this book would be written for children between 6-10 y.o., and the ages of the protagonists would be like 7/8 y.o., then this book would be around three or four stars.
Bud damn, 12/13 y.o. main character belongs into the YA category already (and that's how this book was marketed here, as YA lit), and so it should not be as juvenile as this. I've read middle grade books that did not treat its readers as some stupid 4-year-olds, as did this book.

the good:
- short chapters helped me fly through this quickly, the font and spacing were rather big
- Tuva's relationship with her parents
- a presence of a dog (and the fact that he stayed unharmed)
- the setting is really interesthing
- the incorporation of facts about the Baltic sea and its pollution is done well
- I really liked Rasmus's charater, he felt the most real to me (I also liked his house, and his mother)

the bad:
- it was never specified how their dog looks like, all I know is he has a nose and a tail. Idk how big he is, if his ears are up or down, the color or lenght of his fur... nothing. This stressed me a lot. I love dogs, pls just tell me
- dialogue felt very unnatural, repetitive and all over the place
- there could've been more descriptions. I did not know how long was Tuva running in the fog for example, because she did not tell me(2 minutes? one hour?). She also did not bother to tell me much about her surroundings (path, trees, beach, flower bed... those are very broad terms that invoke nothing)
- the book would not let Rasmus cry (bc he is a boy I guess?), even if his best friend just disappeared and he himself went through something traumatic

- omg the girl hate in this. Tuva's two female classmates were made into the most stereotypical petty antagonists just so Tuva could look better next to them. I abhored this. Tuva's comment on how the shade of a lipgloss of one of the girls looks bad on her, mentioning food stucked between their teeth as if that was a capital sin etc. There was so much of this.
To her eyes they are these giggling, whiny, pretentious, vain creatures that act cute or fragile only for the attention of boys. The scene in the cafeteria where they call her monster was just a cherry on top. Of couse her crush comes to rescue Tuva and stops liking the girls, even better if he says never liked them.
I thought we left this back in 2010? I wish we stopped doing this.
I thought Tuva will actually feel bad when she understands that both girls were not pretending, but were actually very sad bc their friend disappeared. That maybe Tuva will learn to be less judgmental and will regret some things that she thought before. But nope, Tuva is a selfish brat that only ever thinks about herself.

Don't get me wrong, girls like this exist and I know that of course, but in reality at least there is also a variety of other types of people in the classrooms. Writing them like this is just another shortcut, the demonization of stereotypically feminine girls/children/women/everybody. I wonder how children whom like lipglosses and read this book felt.
It was no better when it came to their teacher/nurse/whoever she was. I am glad that at least she was not really evil, but Tuva did never really felt embarrassed for thinking badly of her.
If anything, Tuva seems to be really jealous of them.

- look, idk if it's a fault of an editor and/or a translator (I've read it in czech), or if the original text was indeed written this way, but anyhow: paragraphs were sometimes chopped at weird places (often you would find that three other sentences that followed a paragraph could've been included) and that made the reading really hard bc I would have to go back all the time, making sure who was talking now
- I was promissed horror(or at least krimi/drama), yet horror was nowhere to be found
- in fact chapters were always (99% of time) sooo tense, and usually ended in this kind of a "cliffhanger", as if you were reading them in a newspaper each week. If there is too much tension, then there is none. Everything was overly dramatic and mysterious. The book did not want to share important information with me, keeping it for later books obviously. It was annoying.

- Tuva was a horrible MC. She is your "not like other girls", as if this book was written in 2010. The authors throw the obligatory "she is just so different that she was bullied and so she has no friends" so you would like her from the get-go and they would not have to build her character. It's a shortcut I'm not a fan of.
And as we see later in the book, it's mostly Tuva doing the distancing. When Rasmus called her on it it should have been a breaking point for her and something should've changed. She should've go out of her way and be more active, try speaking with classmates more (not going complimenting her teacher, or snapping a few words at other girls at the boat). I have no idea how big their class is, but it felt like there were only three girls there.
She is also very judgmental. I hated to be in her head. The way she was thinking of other people was disgusting, and she never thought anything of it. Especially when it came to other girls/women. For someone who was supposedly pushed to be alone, but doesn't want to be, she seems to truthfuly hate everybody.
It would not be a problem if this was treated as a character flaw that she needs to confront and work on, but the book is trying to convince me she is actually cool.
Another thing: Tuva has it all easy. She goes to people, asks them a question and they tell her. She did not work on her abilities (as I hoped), neither did she do anything regarding Axel (I hoped at least she would find a body or something?). She just did a magic trick twice, and expected to die. Nice seeing this in a book for children.

other things:
- characters were not very fleshed out. Tuva's "character development" looked like this: being affraid of the sea and being antisocial → falling into the sea and doing stuff she did not know she could do → suddenly has a pocket full of witty remarks and can fight bullies → learning about her backstory and doing nothing with it → in the end jumping into the sea out of her own free will and defeating the great evil without any training or a plan.
- the book should've spent more time with Axel, because it really is not enough to say he is cute and then kill him off, sorry but I don't care bc I don't know him. Also, if Axel was so kind and cute, why did Tuva not try to befriend him?
- the scene where one of their classmates uses her phone to record what Tuva was just telling Rasmus... it was so cartoonish, idk why it was there. Bc the situation was magicaly saved by faeries a few moments later so... why.
- also they are children, but they were so calm when coming to terms with the fact that their classmate/best friend is dead, lol
- police ending the search after a week? lol, ok Sweden, fuck children I guess

- the book is full of tropes that are outdated, many of which I think can be outright harmful and should not have a place in books for children

The book is about her learning she is adopted, and nothing more. By the ending she has 1 friend, and does not try to make any more. He is also her crush. It's strange, just strange.
I don't like messages of this book.

Oikeasti jännä nuorille suunnattu dekkari, jossa oli käytetty hyväksi myös kansanperinnettä. Sopii parhaiten 11-14-vuotiaille nuorille, mutta kyllä sopii kevyenä lukemisensa varttuneemmillekin. Helppolukuinen ja koukuttava kirja, joka oli ahmaistava yhdeltä istumalta. Sopivan synkkä tunnelma ja Ruotsin ulkosaariston omintakeinen miljöö, yhdistettynä mystisiin katoamisiin merellä, takasi minulle huikean sekä ennenkaikkea viihdyttävän aamun tämän kirjan parissa. Annan 3,5 tähteä ja jatko-osa on myös pakko lukea.

Oikein positiivinen yllätys. Tarina nappaa heti mukaansa ja jäätävä, tuulinen saaristomiljöö sekä synkät marraskuun yöt ovat erinomaisen kammottavia. Pohjoismaisen mytologian käyttö tuntuu raikkaalta kaikkien velho- ja vampyyrikirjojen jälkeen ja luonnonsuojelu-teemakin sopi taustalle. Vain Rasmuksen hahmo tuntui hiukan oudolta: hän tuntui uskovan purematta aivan kaiken, mitä Tuve keksi hänelle satuilla. Ehkä seuraava osa valottaisi tätä omituisuutta hiukan..

Rackarns bananer vad bra den här boken var! Otroligt beroendeframkallande, så jag är glad att jag har nummer 2 nära till hands. Den är fylld av spänning och obehag samtidigt som det är ett mysterium som ska lösas. Sen att gammal folktro dyker in överallt är ju verkligen inte fel! Sååå spännande och superintressant verkligen!
Nu ska jag gå och grotta ner mig i bok 2, tack och hej!

Nelosesta vitoseksi koska kirjassa on mukavan lyhyet luvut ja puolesta välistä eteenpäin ajattelin että luen enää vain seuraavan luvun ja sitten nukkumaan, mutta....koska seuraava luku oli niin lyhyt niin oli pakko kurkata sekin ja seuraava....jne. ja sitten olikin lukenut koko kirjan yhdellä kertaa.

Sopivan ikävä ja kamala ja jännä, seiskoille kokeillaan, vaikka osa voi olla jo ohi tämän kaiken. Mutta kyllä tällainen vielä pureekin, sillä onhan esim. Coraline niin suosittu vinkkauksissa edelleen.

Dekkarina alkava, mutta loppua kohden fantasiaksi/kauhuksi muuttuva tarina piti hyvin otteessaan. Kirjan twisti oli hieman liian ennalta arvattava, mutta miljöö oli mielenkiintoinen ja omaperäinen, kyllähän tätä seiskoille vinkkaa.

I thought this was a horror book but i would say its more about folklore and swedish fantasy. I dont mind it because i love folklore and old tales but it wasnt what i thought it would be. Its not really "scary" more a thrilling adventure.

Looking forward to read the rest in the series!
