The Review

This straightforward and compelling book is a valuable resource for teens and parents alike. The author does an incredible job of speaking directly to the reader, not only by recognizing the emotions running through teens but also by providing tools that empower them to take charge of their own emotional care. The balance the author found in not only identifying the causes of these stresses or anxieties and the steps needed to face them, but also in speaking directly to teens and to the parents or caregivers who need the proper tools to interact with and help teens going through these emotional moments.

At the heart of this book was a focus on relationships as a whole and an exploration of the pressures and challenges teenagers face in the modern world. As someone who grew up in an age that had only just begun to acknowledge mental health and still grew up around mentalities of just “toughening it out”, it was refreshing to see the honest and compassionate yet interactive way the author dove into the challenges facing teens today, from social media and academic pressure to the sadly uncertain future teens face due to the growing political and social divides that impact everything form relationships to economics and so much more. The way the book encourages teens and parents alike to find common ground and create an atmosphere that fosters emotional growth together was a bonus.

The Verdict

Memorable, honest, and engaging, author Paul DeRenzo’s “Calm Within Chaos” is a must-read nonfiction self-help and emotional guide for teens, parents, and everyone in between. The detail and straightforward writing style, along with actual tools and practices teens can use to tackle these emotions head-on, will be perfect for readers to return to time and time again.

Reading Calm Within Chaos felt less like flipping through a guidebook and more like having an honest conversation about the struggles we don’t always admit out loud. Stress, anxiety, and anger are emotions we all know too well, and Paul DeRenzo tackles them with warmth and clarity. What drew me in right away was how approachable the writing felt—it didn’t lecture or overwhelm me. Instead, it offered reassurance that these challenges are normal and can be managed with the right tools.

What sets this book apart is its clear focus on the emotional challenges that teens face today. Stress from school, the constant buzz of social media, the ups and downs of friendships—it’s all here, and it’s all relatable. The author doesn’t sugarcoat these struggles, but he also doesn’t leave you feeling hopeless. Instead, he equips readers with realistic tools like mindfulness exercises, emotional awareness practices, and stress management techniques that can be applied immediately.

I especially appreciated the “Teen Inner Peace Challenges” at the end of each chapter. They make the book interactive, almost like a personal coach is guiding you to practice the lessons instead of just reading them.

Highly recommended for teens and their parents.

As a middle school teacher I found this book to be a wealth of knowledge. The author has definitely done a lot of work with teens. The first section talks about emotions and how to learn to regulate them. The first thing is to understand emotions and how and why teens react to them the way they do. There is an entire section on how to deal with those emotions and a quiz at the end.
The fifth chapter talks about resiliency. This to me was one of the most important chapter. The reason I found this chapter so important is because we have resiliency lessons every month at school. We are teaching them some of the same things that this book teaches. The book is far superior to the simple lesson we give once a month. The author explains what resiliency is and why it is important to our mental health. This is a practical guide for teens, parents and anyone. I say anyone because teens aren’t the only ones who need to learn to regulate and deal with their emotions. This should be used in every school. Great book that every parent should have.
