Devon is from the UK, having lived in many places until finally settling in the Midlands. His career in public services started in his teens and has provided a wealth of experiences, both good and some very bad, which form the basis of the book ideas that cause regular insomnia.

He first started reading for fun as an adult, having tried his hardest to avoid anything resembling academia growing up, and at that point the world became a far bigger place. He has been reading, at least one book at a time, ever since.

His debut works, the After It Happened series, (Survival, Humanity, Society) were published in April 2016 followed by Hope (July 2016) and Sanctuary (December 2016). The first part of the series concluded with the release of Rebellion which was published in June 2017.

Storming high into the charts with the first books of the After It Happened series, Devon launched into the top 10 sellers listings in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US, and he made the decision to write full time shortly after the launch of Hope.

Devon’s self-published beginnings caused a stir in the publishing world, and resulted in contracts with Podium Publishing for Audible, narrated by R.C. Bray (The Martian, Expeditionary Force, Arisen), before a publishing deal for kindle and paperbacks with Vulpine Press.

Further works have seen the start of a multi-author series, sci-fi/post-apocalyptic cross genre, futuristic dystopian and alternative history zombie apocalypse. Spin-off books from the After It Happened world have been announced for 2018.

Zombies ✔️
Post-apocalyptic world ✔️
Zekes ✔️
Heroes and Heroines ✔️
And, a dog 🐶 ✔️

Rob is just trying to mind his own business and get through another day.
The enclave is not the best place to be, but it’s better than other places…
As he goes about his day patrolling, watching for threats, killing those deemed to be a threat, he wonders if things are ever going to get better…
As he and his buddy are assigned to a spot, they see what looks to be an ‘undead’ and his partner attempts to shoot it. Thank God he missed, as Rob notices the girl is walking holding a water bottle… so, obviously not dead. But, she appears to be alone. And, that just can’t be…
He goes against everything in him to get to the girl and try to save her.

And then the story really unfolds…
Who is she? Why was she there? What was she doing? And, where is she now???

As the puzzle pieces start to form a picture, Rob realizes that they cannot continue on as they were. Things have to change. And he thinks he knows how, and who might be able to help him…

But things don’t always go as planned, do they??

Some gore. Some nasty images (that might never leave my brain..). A few sweet moments as well (but few and far between!) But wow! This was quite a ride!

If you enjoy zombie stuff. The undead. Dystopian worlds. And the government not seeming to make much sense, then, don’t look any further! This one is for you!!!

It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat!!

4 dark, gory 🌟🌟🌟🌟 for me!

I was fortunate enough to receive an audio for this book

At first I felt like the narrator's execution was too stiff, but the further the story went the more he truly fit the feeling of the book. He also distinguished between characters really well.

The book itself is interesting. You get your post apocalyptic itch with a sprinkle of government conspiracy. Well done all around.

Thank you #NetGalley for making this audiobook available for reading and review.

I want to start off by saying that I did like this book. It is right in my wheelhouse. Post-Apocalyptic... Zombies... Series.... So maybe I am a little harsh because I have read so many brilliant books from this genre, that "really good" books are just judged "good" by me. Or maybe because the first book in any series is usually just setting up the rest of the series and is never as good as the books that follow... But I guess I won't know that till the next book comes out.

I like the way the author introduces characters into the story and then develops them. So far, the female characters just don't have that "real feel" to them, and the main male characters suffer from either that Macho Alpha Male stereotype or the "I'm a good guy that made bad choices and I need to atone" archetype. So far, I think my favorite character is a dog.

The world-building is done well, and the plot is interesting. At least interesting enough to give the next installment a shot. If you are not a fan of cliff-hangers, this book ends without any (major or minor) resolution and leaves several story arcs wide open and in mid-flight.

The narrator is really good.

Enclave:_A Post-Apocalyptic survival thriller. Book 1

Well, kind of a disjointed start to another zombie apocalypse. Kind of good, but kind of nonlinear in content.
I loved Obi and Gator, and I think the series will get better, just going to have to keep reading to find out.

Thanks to the author for putting the work into the series keep it coming!

I usually don’t like zombie books or even movies for that matter. They just don’t appeal to me and I don’t even play an PC games that have to constantly killing roaming zombies. So, this book kind of surprised me when I found out that the world had gone to heck in a hand basket and there are large groups of zombies roaming around the free world. Yet, this book isn’t about just shooting thousands and thousands of mindless zombies creating havoc or of them tearing apart innocent civilians as society completely caves in. No, this book actually has a good story-line that can make sense, but it’s not over so I don’t know if it will all make sense in the end.

We start off in southwest North Dakota nine months after the world went to heck! People started acting very, very strange nine months ago. It seems like those that died, didn’t stay dead, but got up from wherever they were and started attacking those around them. Something started infecting these dead people and they in turn, put the bite on others and then they died but came back almost immediately but now what they called, “turned”. So, you didn’t want to stay around when someone started foaming at the mouth and had this crazy look in whatever was left of their eyes! No, you ran away as fast as you could. People that could run fast made it to enclaves such as Enclave Number 12 her in southwest North Dakota.

As Enclaves go, this one is on the small size. Most of the occupants, but not all, are civilians that either lived in the area or just ran to here from wherever they fled. They had built up walls around the Enclave and had guard/watch towers at various locations which were usually manned by sharpshooters with rifles and scopes. Robert (Rob) Lewis is currently one of the sharpshooters doing a day ship along with his spotter Gerry. These two have been together for a while and they’ve been at the enclave for a while also. They have good jobs manning the watch towers looking for anything that might be a threat to the enclave. Those threats are usually zombies in ones or twos or maybe more, but it’s their job to take them down as long as they have the ammo. They do their job well and have scored a number of kills on the already dead!

Rob had to go do something this one day and he left Gerry alone in the watch tower using his binoculars to scan their sector of the perimeter. When he comes back, Gerry is all exited and has the long gun up to his shoulder looking like he’s got a target. Rob tells him to knock it off and put the gun down because Gerry isn’t that good of a shot and they can’t afford to waste ammo. But, Gerry begins to plead with Rob to let him do the shooting on this single, stumbling zombie out in their sector.

Rob looks through the binoculars and confirms that there is someone stumbling around out there but he yells to Gerry to not to shoot. But, Gerry is so excited he’s already fired a shot and the stumbling zombie falls down presumably dead for real this time. Rob, as the shooter, usually goes for headshots to make sure the dead stay dead. Yet, this time he starts to yelling at Gerry asking why he shot without his OK. Gerry complains that it was just another zombie and he did what he was supposed to do. That’s when Rob tells him that zombies don’t walk around with empty water bottles as he saw the person Gerry shot carrying!

So, that changes the whole complex to the shooting. Rob jumps down the tower and runs out into the killing field trying to find the downed person. He’s hoping that they just got winged, but doesn’t know for sure. What he does find is a young skinny woman very, very much dehydrated but fortunately not bleeding. She seems to have passed out. Rob gives her his bottle of water which she begins to gulp down until he tells her to slow down. He helps her up and takes her back to the enclave where she’s put in the hospital. Rob thought that would be the end of it and was certainly surprised to see a single individual stumbling around outside the enclave. But, it wasn’t longer when Rob and Gerry were back in place and they started spotting a huge gathering of zombies right in front of them coming from the same direction as the young lady. So, Rob starts shooting and then calls in the mortars. They soon devastate the large mob of zombies so that threat is over.

Now we find out there’s more to the story about this young lady. It seems she was coming from Washington D.C. in a convoy with a VIP. She had some special information and they were trying to get to Colorado to provide this info to the President of the US. Rob will get involved and he’ll have some help given by a very competent guy and his dog. So Rob has and adventure ahead of him and it will take him far outside Enclave 12.

Rob’s story isn’t over by any means. Book 2, “Mission”, is available on Amazon right now and I’m adding it to my reading list.

==[Note: As of 12/03/2023, this will not be published on Amazon since I have been banned from posting reviews for some unknown reason. Once the ban is lifted, assuming it does get lifted, I’ll go back and post this to Amazon.]==

I couldn’t put this down.

If you enjoy zombie dystopian novels, don’t miss this. While I generally don’t care for male MCs or older guy narrators, I didn’t mind either here which says how interesting the story was. The narrator did a tremendous job! I appreciated how long this book was and the world building. I felt like I was there. Very much excited for the next book! My only complaint is the one female character (aside from a bar maiden who has only a few lines) could be developed more. As always the dog is the very best part.

There was also a joke of sorts people in Colorado will really appreciate.

The MC works/lives in a military-run enclave. While he’s a civilian, he works as a sniper at the enclave (the purpose of the enclave is to protect people so there’s enough population to repopulate after the zekes die off)

One day on shift his partner shoots what he thinks is a zombie (“zeke”) but is actually a woman. MC is then sent out with a military guy (as usual the canine is the very best part of the story) to find the rest of her crew.

The MC starts to learn and put info together including how the zombies happened.. this puts a target on their back and the race begins

4.5⭐, rounded down

When I started, I wasn’t sure about this one. I wasn’t feeling the narrator, and I got those gross “someone’s going to kill a dog” vibes. (Spoiler: I would’ve DNF’d TF out of this book if that had happened, so when I tell you that GATOR IS GOODEST BOY and that I read the whole thing, you know he’s safe.)

Ultimately, not only was I wrong about the vibes of the book, I’m now chomping at the bit for the sequel.

The main characters are interesting and well developed, and the author does a great job seeding mysteries that make you curious about what’s next. I really enjoyed Obi teaching Rob, and then Rob turning around and teaching Beck what he learned from Obi. Honestly, I would be perfectly happy if the whole book were just Rob, Obi, and, most importantly, Gator.

I understand the necessity of the off-main POV sections, but I didn’t enjoy them. They were too brief to build investment yet uncomfortably long/“torture-porn-ish” at the same time. The little vignettes feel like mood-setters and info-dumps; necessary, but not super well executed. They were out of sync with the tone of the rest of the story.

One cool thing the author does is highlighting practical details you don’t see in every other zombie book. For example: plastic wrap as a key supply! (Because you can’t always be digging latrines, and it’s a great way to contain the smell.)

I’ve seen critiques about a macho alpha-male stereotype in the characters. I get where that’s coming from, but I strongly disagree. Yes, Obi is implied to be Special Forces, and yes, he takes Rob under his wing, drilling survival and combat skills nonstop—but that’s not all that’s happening. What I see is a framework of people who are very traumatized and closed off because of it, constantly revealing their true selves in small ways that are easy to miss at first glance.

Audio-Specific 🎧: Todd McLaren isn’t my favorite. His voice was particularly hard to listen to during non-Rob POV sections. That said, he’s clear and understandable, and he’s a really solid match for Rob’s half-grizzled, half-frazzled perspective.

📌 TL;DR: A tense, gritty zombie story, complete with the bestest boy!

Enclave: Absolutely fantastic!

This is my first book by Devon C. Ford, and I found it to be an absolutely fantastic read. The story was an intriguing mix of characters that were relatable and interesting. Rob is both strong and insecure about his ability to survive this new world he must live in. But his biggest concern is not his survival but his now partner Bec’s as they start a journey to expose the source of the plague that has turned the dead into creatures craving fresh flesh. Definitely preordered the second book.

Great book and very interesting characters

I’m a fan of Devon C. Ford so I purchased this book when I saw it pop up on Amazon. He didn’t disappoint. This was one of my favorite books I’ve read and I’ve already pre-purchased Mission, the second book in the series. I don’t do a lot of reviews but this book definitely earned a great review. If you’re a fan of action and interesting characters I recommend you check this out.

A debut entry for a new post-apocalyptic survival series that is very light on zombies, delving more into what survivors do to themselves. There’s definitely a little bit of Walt Browning’s Extinction Survival vibes here with the introduction of Obie and Gator, and though there wasn’t much of them in this entry, I’ll imagine much bigger parts for them in subsequent entries.

Cool to have a character with my first name. i like post-apoc, dystopia and zombies. And being a big fan of Ford, I was not surprised I'd like this. it was a little slow in the middle, but it picked back up at the 75% mark. Some things are a little still not making g any sense, but I think it will be answered next book. That being said, I think it was very good.

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)

Quick Review
An adventure-first, zombie-second start to a dystopian series. The world building is sharp, the pacing is fairly steady, and the dog, Gator? He's an absolute scene-stealer. A solid start, even if I was craving a little more undead chaos.

Full Review
Enclave opens the door to a post-apocalyptic world that's less about explosive undead pandemonium and more about the long haul survival. The world building is rich and immersive, dropping you into a society that's already adapted to the aftermath instead of showing the first waves of panic and destruction.

Rob, the protagonist, is grounded and relatively likable, however it's Gator who commands the spotlight. Even if he hadn't been a core character, every scene with Gator adds grit, heart, and the kind of loyalty that sticks long after the last page.

Where this one didn't quite hit the mark for me was the lack of zombie fighting and tensions. The "zeeks," as they're called here, felt more like background noise than an ever present threat, which kept the stakes much lower than I'd hoped for a zombie apocalypse novel. I was occasionally pulled out of the story by a few pacing lulls and repetitive use of "glitch" to describe hesitation, but otherwise a solid start.

If you're looking for a quick moving zombified chaos, this likely won't scratch that itch. But if you’re in it for a trek-through-the-ruins kind of survival story with room to grow, it’s a strong opener. And yes, I'll be picking up book two to see where this world heads next.

Features & Vibes
🧟 Background undead; more eerie whispers vs snarling havoc
🧭 Quest vibes; survival with a side of exploration
📚 Clearly laying groundwork for book two
🐕 Standout secondary characters
🔁 Catchphrase overload; "glitch" went from interesting to overplayed

ALC Appreciation

While the zombie thriller has been done quite a few times in several ways, author Ford has found a way to make it new and refreshing. His characters are not super heroic, but regular folks who have had to figure how to survive.

I liked that I could relate to the distractions of the protagonist. I feel I would have been likely to do some of the same things he did. I did not like the relative simplicity of the “Bad Guy” character, though he was not two dimensional. It ended on a cliff-hanger that I did not see coming. Okay, so now I want to hear McLaren narrate book two when it comes out.

Four and a half stars. A good character-driven story, the kind I like best. Reactions were realistic and the plot was not super twisty, but did keep me interested. My thanks to Dreamscape Media and the author via Netgalley.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (3.5/5) | Audiobook via NetGalley

A gritty, post-apocalyptic survival tale with a few unexpected twists, Enclave drops readers into a world where humanity clings to life behind fortified walls—and the undead aren’t the only threat.

The prologue sets the tone beautifully, offering a chilling glimpse into the collapse of civilization and laying the groundwork for the story’s bleak atmosphere. One of the most unique elements? A rare POV from a zombie, which adds eerie depth and flips the usual narrative on its head.

Rob, the protagonist, navigates a world of secrets, suspicion, and slow-burning tension. While the pacing drags in places and the ending veers into confusing territory, the emotional beats—especially those involving the dog (who absolutely steals the show)—keep the story grounded. His presence isn’t just heartwarming; he’s integral to the plot and adds a layer of loyalty and hope that contrasts the grim setting.

And the narrator? Absolutely phenomenal. The range of voices, inflection, and emotional nuance elevated the entire experience. Each character felt distinct, and the tension was amplified by the narrator’s delivery—making this audiobook version especially immersive.

Though not flawless, Enclave offers enough intrigue, character work, and atmospheric dread to make me curious about the rest of the series. If you’re into survival fiction with moral ambiguity, undead lore, and a loyal canine companion, this one’s worth a look.

Thank you Dreamscape media for allowing me to listen to this title. Overall a 2.5 star read, I enjoyed the zombie aspect of the book, but I did have a hard time with some of the writing style. The jokes were very middle school, there was so many opportunities for better adult humor to be thrown in. The characters fell short, there really wasn’t any depth to them, nor did we get much background. In the first half the book barely anything happened, so I was a bit bored. As the story progressed, it was up and down on the speed of it. Real iffy on if I would read the next book, but Gator has me wanting to come back.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ for world building.
⭐️⭐️ for storyline so far.

This one fell a little flat for me as far as zombie books go. The author does really well with building the world in and around the enclave, but nothing really exciting happens throughout the entire book. There's a lot of walking and a lot of talking. There are really no attacks, no casualties...all the things you'd expect from this type of book. He could be setting us up for the next installment in the series, but I don't know that I can sit through another book to find out.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
