Premonitions don't come with an off switch—something Seraphina Porter knows all too well.
Escaping to college, she hopes to bury her "gift" and the "freak" label that comes with it. Then she meets Levi, whose charming smile hides dangerous secrets, and her visions explode with terrifying new intensity.
These aren't just random glimpses anymore. They're warnings of a darkness threatening Levi's New Orleans family. And Sera must keep running from who she is or embrace her abilities and get drawn into a world of voodoo, spirits, and astral projection to save the first boy she's ever loved.
Will she rise to the challenge or succumb to her fears?

4.5/5 ⭐ This paranormal coming of age story is a gripping tale of magic, voodoo, and secrets. Sera and Levi meet in college, trying to start new and experience a sweet romance, but find themselves embroiled in a past that refuses to let either go. When it threatens Levi's family, they choose to embrace their gifts and fight together to save those they love. The love of the culture of New Orleans and Louisiana was weaved throughout the entire story in a way that felt authentic and natural. Thanks to Booksprout for the ARC for my candid thoughts.
Sage: A Supernatural Coming-of-Age Story That Electrifies the Senses Rating: 4.7/5
Jade Salazar’s Sage is a spellbinding fusion of paranormal suspense and emotional self-discovery, a novel that crackles with the raw energy of a storm over the French Quarter. As someone who typically approaches YA supernatural tropes with caution, this book shattered my expectations—its pages thrum with a rare authenticity that transforms familiar themes (premonitions, voodoo lore) into something freshly haunting.
Why This Book Captivates Salazar’s prose is a masterclass in sensory immersion. The way she renders Seraphina’s visions—not as tidy plot devices but as physically invasive experiences—left me feeling the protagonist’s disorientation in my bones. Levi’s character avoids the brooding love interest cliché; his charm and danger exist in equal measure, making their connection feel earned rather than fated. The New Orleans setting isn’t just backdrop; it’s a living entity where jazz clubs and graveyards hum with latent magic. Standout scenes involving astral projection redefine show don’t tell—I could taste the metallic fear of Sera’s out-of-body moments.
Emotional Resonance & Revelations This book wrung me out emotionally. Sera’s struggle to reconcile her gift with her desire for normalcy evoked my own teenage yearning to fit in. The horror-adjacent sequences (a particular voodoo ritual lives rent-free in my mind) elicited genuine chills, while Levi’s family drama added Shakespearean weight. Most profound was Salazar’s thesis that intuition isn’t a curse but a language—one Sera must learn to speak fluently. By the climax, I wasn’t just rooting for her survival; I ached for her embrace of power.
Constructive Criticism The middle sags slightly with lore exposition; a tighter integration of worldbuilding through action would maintain momentum. Secondary characters (especially Sera’s college friends) feel underutilized—their perspectives could enrich the normal vs. supernatural tension.
Final Verdict A standout in paranormal YA—think The Raven Boys meets The Diviners, but with Salazar’s distinct lyrical grit. This isn’t just a story about seeing the future; it’s about choosing it.
Thank you to Goodreads Giveaways and the publisher for the gifted copy. I’ll never hear a distant drumbeat without thinking of this book’s magic.
Pair with: The Premonitions Bureau for nonfiction parallels or The Gilded Wolves for another myth-steeped New Orleans adventure.

Note: Read with the lights on—and maybe a salt circle for good measure.

New YA Romantasy Book takes the normal and throws it away!
Sage by Jade Salazar takes what you think is going to be a normal YA book and throws it away for good. Involving the supernatural and the traditions of Voo Doo, Jade creates an immersive book that brings the reader into the story one chapter at a time. Sera the main character, is a freshman in college and is trying to deal with her supernatural abilities that her family is trying to hide away from the world. While in a series of events she meets Levi, her main love interest, and gets to understand her ability even more. Throughout the novel the two help each other learn new things about themselves and in the end save Levi's family from an untimely demise.
Overall, Sage received a 5/5 rating from me, because of the readability and the flow of the story. I enjoyed reading this book and am left wanting more to see how their future looks.
