4.5/5 ⭐ This paranormal coming of age story is a gripping tale of magic, voodoo, and secrets. Sera and Levi meet in college, trying to start new and experience a sweet romance, but find themselves embroiled in a past that refuses to let either go. When it threatens Levi's family, they choose to embrace their gifts and fight together to save those they love. The love of the culture of New Orleans and Louisiana was weaved throughout the entire story in a way that felt authentic and natural.

As someone who typically approaches YA supernatural tropes with caution, this book shattered my expectations—its pages thrum with a rare authenticity that transforms familiar themes (premonitions, voodoo lore) into something freshly haunting.
Why This Book Captivates
Salazar’s prose is a masterclass in sensory immersion. The way she renders Seraphina’s visions—not as tidy plot devices but as physically invasive experiences—left me feeling the protagonist’s disorientation in my bones. Levi’s character avoids the brooding love interest cliché; his charm and danger exist in equal measure, making their connection feel earned rather than fated. The New Orleans setting isn’t just backdrop; it’s a living entity where jazz clubs and graveyards hum with latent magic. Standout scenes involving astral projection redefine show don’t tell—I could taste the metallic fear of Sera’s out-of-body moments.

New YA Romantasy Book takes the normal and throws it away!
Sage by Jade Salazar takes what you think is going to be a normal YA book and throws it away for good. Involving the supernatural and the traditions of Voo Doo, Jade creates an immersive book that brings the reader into the story one chapter at a time. Sera the main character, is a freshman in college and is trying to deal with her supernatural abilities that her family is trying to hide away from the world. While in a series of events she meets Levi, her main love interest, and gets to understand her ability even more. Throughout the novel the two help each other learn new things about themselves and in the end save Levi's family from an untimely demise.
Overall, Sage received a 5/5 rating from me, because of the readability and the flow of the story. I enjoyed reading this book and am left wanting more to see how their future looks.
