Fabulous. A travelogue, history, and spiritual retreat all in one.

Hey, I LOVE travel diaries or "travelogues" as we say correctly. I also LOVE Mount Athos and any stories related to this place of paradise. I have read many books on Athos, but this one is very in depth and well written. It keeps my interest and has me making many mental notes to cross reference information. A pleasant read all around.

Loch, who lived near Mount Athos for about thirty years, offers a warm personal account of his ramblings on the peninsula from the 1920s to 1950s. There are brief histories of the various monasteries and hermitages, the legends of famous icons, and many sketches of individual monks. Much better than Robert Byron's more famous and much overrated The Station.
