Dating Trouble

Rate this book
Never trust a twin!

I want Ethan, and Chris wants me.

Somehow, I managed to get caught between identical twin brothers at school this fall. Both of them want to date me, so I only have to take my pick. Right?

Wrong! Ethan is reluctant to kiss me, and Chris wants me for the entirely wrong reasons.

Nothing like his obliging and sweet brother, Chris Donovan has trouble written all over him. He changes girls like other guys change t-shirts, and the next trophy on his little list is me. I swear that’s never going to happen.

So why the heck did I let him feed me with strawberries when we were alone in his house? I knew I was getting myself into more trouble than I could possibly handle when I did what he said and closed my eyes…

A super-cute little YA which gets 5 stars because I've reread it way too often over the years.

17-year-old Sue is a nerdy little bookworm, but unlike most nerdy little bookworms, she's the athletic sort who plays for Grover Beach's mixed-sex football team. When she injures her knee, she's temporarily replaced by Ethan. The two instantly hit it off, and Sue's overjoyed when he asks her out on a date.

But... why has he stood her up? And when she marches up to confront him about it, why does he pretend he doesn't even know her? Of course, the truth quickly emerges - she was talking to Ethan's identical twin brother Chris, a player as infuriating as Ethan is sweet. Soon Sue finds herself in a love triangle, but not the ones you usually see in YA. You see, she likes Ethan, Chris likes her, and Ethan likes someone entirely different.

There are definitely some cringy Wattpad-type moments, but overall this is an adorable book with minimal drama and a heroine who actually has a backbone. Plus, joy of joys, this book also has a satisfying marriage-and-kids sort of epilogue you don't usually see in YA. Wins all around.

I hadn't read this for quite some time but was really in the mood for a light, easy, YA romance and found this on a dusty shelf at the back of the house.

I still loved it, especially the first half, and caught myself grinning a couple of times. But I didn't quite love it as much as the first time around. The characters seemed younger than I remember, especially the main guy, and some of the book hasn't aged too well. Too many stereotypes, perhaps?

But this was like a cozy old blanket of nostalgia too and I still love a good opposites-attract romance!

Original review below.

5+ Stars!

“So you want me because you can’t have me?”
“Who says I can’t have you?”
“I do.”
“Oh, okay. So yes, then I definitely want you.”

What's it about? Bookworm, soccer-playing, romantic dreamer Susan meets the delectably good-looking Ethan and after spending hours talking to him after their first meeting, she feels as if she's finally met her soul mate. But then his arrogant, one-track-mind twin brother, Chris, also enters her life and makes her question everything she ever thought she knew she wanted.

The Best bits: I absolutely LOVED this book. I'm still gushing and can't get my thoughts together to write a proper review. But Chris and Susan's romance is definitely my favourite in this series!!

First, there's Chris. He was hilarious, cocky, mischievious and devoted. All good things in a YA hero. And so perfectly suited the stubborn and romantic Susan.

Susan was a terrific heroine and perfectly captured the doubts and insecurities of a 17 year old. I loved her spirit, especially when cornered!

Anna Katmore sets up the mistaken identity them brilliantly and creates tension and chemistry between two very strong personalities. And while I totally loved this book, I am almost twirling with g l ee because I get to read it from HIS point of view next!!!

The worst bits: I think the last few chapters were drawn out a little bit, but on the other hand, without that aspect " the pool room scene" could not have been as awesome!

Recommended for: Absolutely anybody and everybody who enjoys YA romance!!! Fans of mistaken identities, cocky heroes, and fiesty heroines. This is an absolute must-read!

Awesome 6 star favourite!!!

The Grover Beach Team series by Anna Katmore just get more and more amazing. Meet Chris Donovan. He's a playboy, a charmer, a hidden romantic, and he's just...ugh...so impossible at times.

We've met bookworm Susan Miller in the previous books in the series - and she gets in trouble pretty soon when she meets attractive twins, Chris and Ethan - not necessarily in that order. But while Ethan is obviously her soul mate, his brother is quite a handful to deal with. They both want to spend time with her, even if their motives aren't entirely clear. The texts from Chris? Just hilarious! They made me smile every time Sue's phone beeped with a new SMS .
Susan finds herself drawn to the twins in a way that leaves her breathless. And breathless you'll be after you read the amazing kiss scene. It's just the BEST ever! And so-soo darn sweet. ;)
I wished Sue could have both twins, of course, but hey this is sweet YA--LOL.

You know what they say about twins? They're double the trouble, and that's definitely the case for Sue! Sue's falling for Ethan but Ethan's hiding something. Meanwhile Chris is after Sue, but he's not the twin she wants!

I really liked Sue at first but she gradually turned into a soppy, angtsy teenage girl who just couldn't stop thinking about a boy. I enjoyed the first half of the book and the leadup to the revelation of Ethan's secret. I didn't see that twist coming. After the cat was let out of the bag, the story went downhill from there. There were so many cliches crammed into the plot that had my eyes rolling I thought a lot of the second half of the book was redundant, making the book unnecessarily long. I felt very bored! Overall, the book was enjoyable but let down by a weak middle and end.

I loved this book. I’ve read and enjoyed all of the Grover Beach Series, but this one was definitely my favourite.

Susan we’ve met before, Ethan and Chris were new and wonderful. I loved all the confusions, twists and turns that the plot took, and the fact that Susan didn’t see any of it coming.

A romantic teenager who has never been kissed and is watching her family break apart, Susan finds solace in a new friend. She falls almost immediately for Ethan, and takes an immediate dislike to his twin, Chris. Susan tries to keep Chris at arm’s length, but he has other ideas, and pulls out all the stops to get past her image of him as a player.

Susan knocks him back again and again, but how long can she hold out, and why isn’t Ethan kissing her?

Dating Trouble is a lovely, sweet, teenage romance. The twins are irresistible, and once it got me hooked, I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read all about Chris’s side of the story when the next book comes out.

Omg. You guys. YOU GUYS!!!
If you loved Ryan Hunter, you will love this. I was skeptical on whether or not the new guy could be, but he's a very close second to Ryan.
This was amazing. And I love Susan even before because I'm pretty sure I was just reading a story about myself with a few embellishments.
So yes, highly recommend. Super amazing and perfect.

Loved it up until 75% and thought it would be 5 stars from me.
But I had a problem with how Susan handled both Ethan and Chris asking her to forgive them, she was way too stubborn and unreasonable for too long in my eyes (for 20% of the book in fact).
The epilogue was a bit strange, too.
4 stars overall.

"He didn't act like he didn't know me. He just acted as if ... he didn't care."

The butterflies in my stomach won't stop stop. I soooooooo love this book. It gave me a hell lot of giggles in middle of the night, butterflies and so so deep sighs with thoughts of "How I wish". Definitely how I wish for a Hunter and Tony, or even Alex and Nick, or for this book, a Christ and Ethan in my life. Goodness, how I wish I could give death glares to these girls in the book because they're so lucky and I can't even.

"Don't worry. It's okay to be nervous. You'll get used to the butterflies. And at some point, you'll love them."

This series earns a spot in my heart. This review includes the entire series. Although a little too good to be true, it makes me feel better and hope for something as good. Young love earns a soft spot in me for the reason I have no idea. In GBT, everything was just perfect - hot guys, pretty girls, families, group of friends, and perfect love stories. It revolves around a group of friends in high school who found one another through love and relationships. Totally a #Relationshipgoals #Friendshipgoals you name it. I awfully sound a lot hopeless romantic but who cares, it got me hooked. Thankfully I'm not too old for this. I think.

To be continued

"Dating Trouble" by Anna Katmore
5 out of 5 stars

Grover Beach fans rejoice!!! Anna Katmore has taken the beloved series to a whole new level! If you are a diehard fan (like me) or new to this group of characters you will not be disappointed with this new installment!

Susan is a little down on her luck. Everyone is coupled up around her and now, because of an injury, soccer is sidelined as well. Could her life suck anymore? That's what she's asking herself when she meets a cute new guy named Ethan who seems to be everything she's ever wanted in a love interest. It all seems to be going so well until she meets Ethan's twin brother and he sends the butterflies in her stomach on a rampage. Will she listen her head or heart and take a risk on love?

Susan has always been one of my favorite characters in the series. I have always pictured her as the foundation of the group. Even though her head is often in a book, she's the one that grounds everyone else and keeps them together. I was honestly waiting on a book where she and Nick realize that their feelings go beyond friendship, so I was pleasantly surprised with this story. I loved getting to know her on a deeper level. Her interactions with her family are raw and realistic. I felt her frustration with her family drama and her sadness as things escalated. There was a sense of loneliness in her that Katmore managed to bring out so well I wanted to reach through the pages and offer her comfort.

Ethan and Chris are great additions to the group. While identical twins in appearance, they couldn't be more different in personality. Ethan's relationship with Susan is fun and flirty. They have great chemistry and always have a good time together. Chris is more mysterious and has just the right amount of that "bad boy" vibe. When he and Susan are together the sparks just ignite the page and I kept waiting for the explosion. Katmore did an amazing job of taking two people who have the same physical characteristics and making them stand on their own as two very individual people. I love their personalities and I can't wait to see more of them in subsequent books.

Katmore is one of my favorite authors. I've written before about how she has a knack with imagery (the world Neverland and Pan's Revenge are beautifully written) and she has translated that to this series. I felt like I was in each scene. I could easily picture the soccer field, the school, Charlie’s, Susan's house, and the boys' place. In fact, I wanted to visit!!! My favorite characters were all back and it was fun to take a peek into their lives and see what they've been up to since the last book. The only downside is now I have to wait again to catch another glimpse at their world. Until then I'll have to settle for stalking them on Facebook (where many of the Grover Beach kids hang out) and anxiously await the next book. This one is a definite recommend and if you are new to Anna Katmore make sure you scoop up her other books as well...you'll thank me later!

I can't decide if I like this book more or less than the others. It was really entertaining, and I appreciated that it was longer than the other books, and therefore gave a bit more breathing room for character development. It's cool that Susan didn't immediately melt into Chris's arms, kind of; but at the same time, the obstacles, by the end, were getting tiring, because they were so contrived. It got to the point where I thought that if I were Chris, I would just forget about Susan.

Was the pacing perfect? No, not even close; I predicted most of the twists and turns way before they actually happened. But was it compulsively readable? Certainly.

Unfortunately, I really can't seem to get past some of the awkward word usage and phrasing (especially, in this book, "sweetness", sure and surely, heck). I was also thinking that I really hope Katmore won't get into a habit of writing two books per character in this series, because it just feels like a bit too much. Also, each successful couple is showing up in the later books, which is kind of cool, except that there are just a lot of cameos of kissing couples.

I don't know if there's anything more to be gleaned out of the series, to be honest. I like Nick and would possibly welcome a story about him, but in some ways, I'm hoping Katmore will branch out and write something different.

Apparently the next book is going to be this one in Chris's perspective. After having read Play with Me and Ryan Hunter, I'm not sure I can handle that. But overall, this book was an enjoyable and quick read.

PS: Taschentuchalarm :,)

4 1/4 Sterne ☺

Good but not great

I absolutely loved Ryan and Lisa's story which is why I was excited to read this book. It's true that Chris is no Ryan Hunter but that's okay because he's still charming and lovable in a different way. I also liked Susan as a character because even though she's supposed to fit into the nerd trope, she's strong, level-headed, and not the squeaky shy girl that you commonly see in romance novels. She was also smart and I loved the fact that she figures out most of the plot twists quickly because I find it annoying when books have characters that remain oblivious until the end to something the reader figures out twenty minutes into the book. The banter between Susan and Chris is enjoyable and the book is well-written. I would give it 5 stars if not for the epilogue. For me, it sort of ruined the story and was totally unnecessary. I don't understand why the author felt the need to include it but I wasn't happy with it. I think there's a charm in not setting the character's future in stone and say exactly what happened to them and what will happen after the story. I don't want to give details in order to not spoil the story but I REALLY disliked the epilogue as I felt it gave me a bitter aftertaste that makes me look at the story in a less positive way. I would recommend this book but suggest you skip the epilogue if you want a truly enjoyable experience.

**Update: I‘m so happy that I finally have this cute story as a paperback. It really is my second favorite couple of this series and just always sooo freaking good to reread. Especially if you need a bit of teen love story magic. 🥰✨

*Update: I love when minor characters from a story I love get their own story, which is just as amazing. Plus, it is sooo lovely to follow all your beloved characters from before and also look into their future along with the story. ;) *

I couldn't resist rereading this lovely story again. I love the Grover Beach Team characters and although Liza and Ryan from the first two books of the series are my favorites the couple in this book and the 6th book is my second favorite!

Suzanne is just the adorable but feisty bookworm who makes her book become true! I'm also living my life through books and love epic romance stories that is why I could identify myself so good with her character.

A super funny twist in their story makes it way cuter. I believe it can be really confusing telling apart identical twins, especially if they are such adorable and handsome as Chris and Ethan! <3

This is a fantastic read for helpless romantics and bookworms who just try to be pulled into a too cute to be true love story. I can recommend reading the whole series as beloved characters always reappear and it's amazing to follow their story from another perspective.

I always wanted to know what sort of guy Sue would end up with and now I know. I won't say Chris is perfect because that title belongs to Ryan. The thing is, Chris is his own guy and he works for Sue. Did they have an easy road? Not at all. A great many things could have been avoided if they had opened their mouths and spoke to each other. That is really what the main problem was and when it really was time to talk, Sue was not having. In this case, didn't blame her, but Chris makes up for it.

Now of Ethan. It took Sue WAY too long to figure out what was going on there. I wouldn't say there were signs exactly, but there is shy and there is not having the right moment and then there is being not interested. If none of these things are coming into play, its time to look into the matter. That is one of those things a girl checks out so she won't end up unknowingly friend-zoned.

i wouldn't have given it a 5 star rating if not because of its epilogue and the way Chris' moves had swept me off my feet if it hadn't with Sue. hehe. he's such a sweet guy. totally could be with same level as Ryan. i would even pick Chris over Ryan in a heartbeat if i had to choose between the two. on the other hand, i hated the way Sue gave Chris a hard time just because he switched place with Ethan. like what Sam said, it's totally romantic and doesn't Sue even realize she's got the guy already at her feet and yet she's still playing hard to get?! haha sooo totally in to this series that i sure appreciate the epilogue. i would love to know if the other couples also ended up married to each other. oh, Anna Katmore, it wouldn't hurt to make another Grover Beach book and we definitely wouldn't mind reading another book of yours. :)

This may be my new favorite Grover Beach Team book and Chris might just beat Ryan Hunter as my new favorite GBT hero. Though I feel a little disloyal saying so. I'll have to let it sink in for a bit before I can be sure. Susan is definitely my favorite heroine. Of course, who doesn't love a bookworm. In any case, this book is just another reason to love Anna Katmore. Here's hoping she follows her pattern and publishes Chris's side of the story.

Dating Trouble can be read as a standalone. I would still recommend reading the other books in the Grover Beach series because Susan is in those books.

First off, I loved the opening scene of the book between Ryan Hunter and Susan Miller. I have adored their friendship throughout the series. I find it sweet and funny. I think it is cute that he gave her the nickname “Book Lover”. The Twilight references were funny. The opening scene was made of win.

I have always really liked Susan. I was happy when I heard that she would be getting a book. She has a good sense of humor and is a great friend. Most importantly, she has a good head on her shoulders. Also, Susan was rooting for Ryan to win Liza over in Play with me so that made like her all the more. One of the things I really like about this series is that the female leads stand up for themselves. They are not pushovers. Susan definitely has a backbone.

Another reason I like Susan is that she is a book warm. I like that Susan is not a completely stereotypical version of a book warm. Susan is very innocent. She has never had a boyfriend or been kissed. However, she is not shy or antisocial. She is quite the opposite. Susan is outspoken, maybe a little too outspoken at times but that is alright. I like that Susan points out that just because a person wears glasses that does not mean they are a nerd.

At the beginning of Dating Trouble, Susan’s feeling a bit glum. Recently, Susan sustained a leg injury during a soccer match. As a result, she is unable to play soccer for several weeks. Ryan Hunter (the captain of the soccer team) finds a temporary replacement for Susan but he forgets to tell her. Needless to say, Susan is not very happy about the situation. On the plus side, the replacement happens to be a really good looking guy named Ethan Dononvan aka Charlie Brown. Ethan’s clothing reminds Susan of Charlie Brown. Susan worries that he will try to make his temporary spot on the team permanent. He reassures her that as soon as her leg gets better she can have back her spot. I really enjoyed when Susan and Ethan first met. I thought their interactions in those first few scenes were cute and fun. I too was swooning over Ethan a little bit. I thought it was priceless that Susan actually had her name written on that bench.

Ethan and Susan end up spending hours talking after soccer practice. They really seemed to hit it off. It turns out that they have a lot of common interests. He is her first real crush. Before Ethan leaves, he asks Susan if she’d like to go on a date with him the next day.

The next day in school Susan sees Ethan flirting with another girl. She goes to talk to him. He completely blows her off and acts like he never met her before. I thought she handled that situation well. She wants nothing to do with him after that. Eventually, Susan finds out that Ethan has an identical twin brother named Chris.

Needless to say, Chris does not really make a good first impression, second, or third for that matter. Chris has the reputation of being a player. Susan finds him insufferable. I did not like Chris at first because he was so rude and arrogant. Anyway, Susan ends up giving Chris her number in an interesting way to give to Ethan. Only, Chris starts calling Susan and leaving her sweet goodnight texts! Chris’s sudden interest leaves Susan very confused.

I know some people might be hesitant to read the book because of a love triangle. There is a little bit of triangle in the beginning. There is just a bit of a triangle. Not everything is as it seems. Ethan has his secrets. I thinks it becomes clear who really makes Susan’s heart race and gives her butterflies.

“Chris touched his lips to the corner of mine. And the butterflies were back. All ten thousand and then some.”

She does go on a few dates with Ethan. They never become girlfriend and boyfriend. They don’t kiss. Ethan seems more content just playing Mario Kart with Susan. I really think that Susan had the best of both worlds with Ethan and Chris. They both cook for her.

I just want to point out that Chris would never have pursued Susan if he truly thought his brother had a romantic interest in her. Chris kind of seems like a crummy brother at first but he is really a good brother.

On top of all the boy drama/confusion, Susan has family issues. Susan’s parents fight all the time. It’s sad because she can’t even have friends over because she is embarrassed by her parents fighting. Susan’s friends do not know about the drama at home. I too was a little surprised by it. Susan’s parents fought a lot over silly things.

In regards to the twins, I think Ethan seemed more like that safe guy. He never really puts moves on Susan. He does not try to kiss her. Ethan seems more like the boy next door. Whenever Susan was hanging out with Ethan her mind would drift to thoughts of Chris. Susan was really comfortable with Ethan. It was like hanging out with a best friend that she knew forever even though she just met him. On the other hand, Chris made her nervous and uncomfortable. He hadtrouble written all over him.

“I knew his kind- he was trouble, the kind that drew looks from every corner when he walked through the hallways and that could turn a girl’s brain to mush with just a dimple in his cheek. But not with ,me. I was not going to be the next name on his checklist and I would not let him ruin something as important as my first kiss because he just smelled easy prey.”

Chris is uncharted territory for Susan. Without a doubt Susan is attracted to Chris. Again, Chris seems like a player. She worries that Chris is just playing a game with her. Susan does not want to be his next “go to girl”. Initially Susan thinks that Chris just wants a challenge and wants to get in her pants. I does not help that at the beginning of the story Chris tells Susan that he could “squeeze her into his calendar”. It is easier for Susan to resist Chris when he is being cocky/playful. It is hard for her to resist him when he is being serious. Sue does want Chris but she does not want to want him. She does not want to admit that she wants him.

“From the start, you tried to keep me away, simply out of principle. Because I was not who you expected to fall in love with. You kept denying your feelings for me, but I have proof of it on my phone. It’s in every damn text you sent me back!”

Chris does make his share of mistakes and it takes Susan a while to forgive him for stuff. He did not do anything really bad.

I am glad that Susan did not forgive Chris in two seconds. At the same time, it did not really bother me that he tricked her. I thought kind of cute. Secretly, Susan thought what Chris did was cute but would never admit it. I have read so many books where the girl forgives the guy in no time at all. Chris was used to easy. Why make it easy on him? He should have to work for Susan. He did work for her. One of the things Chris loves about Susan and what sets Susan apart from a lot of other girls is that she challenges him.

Another thing that I really like about the book is Susan makes it clear that she is not just going to hop into bed with Chris. Susan would never let someone pressure her into something that she is not ready to do.

“Even though I’m not one of those girls who want to wait until marriage before they…er.. sleep with a guy- my cheeks grew warm with that confession-“it doesn’t mean I’ll give it away to some arrogant womanizer either.”

Chris respects Susan. Chris would never pressure Susan. Chris got major points for that. There is that saying that you can tell a lot about a guy by the way he treats his mother. The relationship between Chris and his mother is really sweet.

Just some side notes:

There were a few scenes in particular that I liked and reminded me of Play of scenes in Play with Me.

-There is a scene where Liza gives Susan advice about Chris that Susan gave to her in Play with Me.

- I loved that kiwi scene. It reminded me of the tequila/lime scene in Play with Me. I think Chris could definitely compete with Hunter in the swoon department. Chris can even cook.

Last, I absolutely loved the epilogue and was not expecting that at all.

What i thought about this book?
- I thought it was a very beautiful and classic teenage book that every teen should read. The plot, the world building, the characters, i loved everything in this book, and the end was just so sweet. I wasn't disappointed one bit, i can't wait to pick up another book by this author. This book made me have different emotions whether is happy or sad, i just simply loved it.

PLOT:
Never trust a twin!

Susan wants Ethan, and Chris wants Sue.

Drawn to Ethan and intrigued by Chris, Susan Miller finds herself caught between identical twin brothers at her school. When both of them start wooing her at the same time, she only has to take her pick. Right? Wrong! Ethan is reluctant to kiss her, and Chris wants her for the completely wrong reasons.

Nothing like his obliging and sweet brother, Chris Donovan has trouble written all over him. He changes girls like other guys change t-shirts, and the next trophy on his little list is Susan. That’s the last thing she wants, yet she finds herself responding to all the goodnight texts and other cheeky messages Chris sends. The guy has a way of getting under her skin like no one ever has before.

How long will it be until Susan falls for his smooth charm and gets herself into more trouble than she can possibly handle? And where does that leave Ethan?

CHARACTERS:

SUSAN: I loved her character. She was stubborn, kind, loyal, and did i mention a big savage. Susan is also on the soccer team and has a tomboyish side to her. Like any girl out there Sue had big plans for her future, college, good set of friends, a big loving family, until the Donovan twins entered her life. Enter Ethan a new student to her high school and a new member of the soccer team, she starts to develop a crush on him from the start. Enter Chris, Ethan's identical twin brother and a complete opposite of him, trouble is the word that defines him, he makes Sue feel things she hasn't felt at all and he is intend to make her his next trophy, so which is going to win her heart? The boy with the heart of gold or the boy who is a definition of trouble?
The relationship she had with her friends was like any other normal friendship out there, loving and caring, and what they did for her at the end just defines how strong their friendship was. The relationship she had with her family was ok at first, but i promise it gets beter. The relationship she had with the Donovan twins was mixed, Ethan made her feel safe and had a crush on him, but with Chris he made her feel something she never felt before. Something i really liked about Sue was also when she never gave into Chris on the start like all the other girls, something i really appreciate, so all i want to say is, you go girl!

ETHAN: Ethan had a heart of gold. He was charming, kind, loyal and he was always there for Sue. He lived with his twin brother Chris who is a total opposite of him and with his mother. The relationship he had with his family was like any other normal relationship loving and caring. The relationship he had with Sue was also like that even if he wasn't into her that much (not telling). And that ending, i am so glad he found happines!

CHRIS: Chris was the definition of trouble. He was the new bad boy of Sue's new high school, new member of the basketball team, cocky, arrogant and did i mention a big womanizer (he has a good reason why is he like that). The relationship he had with his family was loving and caring, he had a soft spot always for his family. The relationship with Sue was just so interesting, their arguements are so funny, his text messages to her were so sweet and how he played soccer with her and how he was always there for her, ugghhhh we need a Chris in real life, but we all know that fictional boys are always better. Oh and that ending, i wasn't disappointed at all, i am sure that the ending left us all smiling.
