Bloodlight Lumière #1

The Light of Blood

Rate this book
There are secrets buried in Nivara. One of them kisses her like a sinner and protects her like a king. They told her not to trust a vampire. They didn’t warn her about loving one.

What happens when the woman who created a serum to give the sun to vampires becomes the target of those who want only darkness?

I'm Cassandra Burke. Scientist. Scholar. Human outsider invited to the ancient Vampire city of Nivara to decipher ancient manuscripts.

Lumière—my creation—lets vampires walk in the sun. But not everyone thinks that’s a good thing. Some call it freedom. Others call it a betrayal. Vampires are divided—those who crave the light, and those who worship the dark.

Now cultists are rising. And the Ancients—banished monsters from a forgotten age—are stirring in their prison beneath Shadowkeep.

Oh, and there’s one more problem. Him. A vampire.

Gorgeous, dangerous, powerful—and off-limits. But every time he looks at me, my world shifts. I feel it in my bones. Every touch sparks something deep in my blood I don’t understand.

This seductive vampire, Dominic, says I’m the Bloodlight. The one with the power to bring peace – or unleash hell. What happens if he’s right?

Vampires can come and play in the sunshine now, thanks to an invention by Cassandra Burke. Scientist, scholar, extremely hot and expert level “not like the other girls”, Cassandra has devoted her life to all things vampy, and when she is invited to study newly discovered vampire texts she's hopping on the next flight to the ancient city of Nivara.

Meanwhile in vampire society, things are not well. While the American vamps have embraced Cassandra’s “Lumiere” formula, the Europeans, always a stickler for tradition, are not so pleased. Vampires are the night, power, blood, not prancing about with lesser species. While some do take advantage of being able to see the sun and live a “normal” life, anti-Lumiere factions have risen and things are getting violent. While Cassandra works on the old texts, falls in love with Nivara’s regent and attends parties and council meetings, those factions begin to plot and act.

From the start I was thinking this book maybe wasn’t right for me. I couldn’t feel attached to any of the main characters (shout out to my main man Dr Aeternus, my favourite out of them all), the romance between Cassandra and Dominic was just not believable, even if they are soulmates and the spice was lacklustre at best. However, if I look past these, the story is actually pretty interesting. There is enough going on to keep you flipping those pages, the political intrigue is hot enough without the need for bodice ripping. You suspect everyone of being a “traitor” but in all honesty I’m not even sure Cassandra and Dominic are on the “right” side of things, so while I would give this low marks in the romance category, it’s certainly up there with mystery. When the author ends the book on what felt like a fade to black, I immediately went to find the next one. For a book I wasn’t sure of, that was not the reaction I was expecting to have.

As I am a monster romance reviewer, it would be remiss of me to not look into the spicy scenes a bit more and I have to say if this book just skipped over them I would probably have higher praise for “The Light of Blood”. It wasn’t that they were truly awful or anything, just made me cringe a bit. Steamy enough to make your great aunt Ethel fan herself, but on the whole cheesy and the dialogue a bit too proper, but then again, one of our couple is an ancient vampire and the other a sexy genius who doesn’t have time for men. Since I am neither of these things I cannot possibly comment that this is how things would go down. The romance added nothing to the overall plot, didn’t make you like the characters any more than you already did, and you really wonder if they are soul mates or just two attractive people locked together due to circumstances.

If you enjoy magical girl/vampire/nobility/prophecy/world ending evil tropes then try this one out for size. The writing can sometimes be a bit clumsy (please remember Europe is a continent not a country) and the characters a bit one-dimensional I would still bother. The bones of this book are good, and I look forward to the next one.

The Light of Blood had all the ingredients for a dark, seductive romantasy I’d typically devour — vampires, forbidden magic, fated mates, and looming ancient evil. Unfortunately, while the premise sounded exciting, the execution just didn’t work for me.

I really struggled to connect with the characters. Cassandra, despite being a scientist invited into this vampire city, felt a little flat, and Dominic, the powerful, brooding vampire love interest, came off more cringey than compelling. Their romance moved too fast and leaned a little too heavily on cliché “you’re mine” moments without the kind of emotional buildup that makes that trope hit.

The pacing was also an issue. The story felt short and choppy, jumping between plot points without much breathing room or depth. Important moments happened so quickly it was hard to feel their weight or understand why the characters reacted the way they did. And because of that, I had a tough time getting invested in what was at stake.

There are some interesting world-building ideas here — I liked the concept of Lumière and the divide it caused among the vampires, as well as the brewing cultist threat and ancient evil. But those threads didn’t feel fully fleshed out in this first installment.

If you’re looking for a quick, steamy vampire fantasy with fated mates vibes and don’t mind a little insta-love, you might still enjoy it. I just wanted more.

dark and seductive

Dark, seductive, and totally unputdownable—The Light of the Blood is one of those series openers that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Jade Christy introduces a shadowy world where vampires are not just bloodthirsty—they’re political, calculating, and determined to claw their way back to dominance.

The heroine is fierce but human, caught in a world where trust is dangerous and survival comes at a cost. She’s thrown headfirst into vampire power struggles, ancient bloodlines, and secrets that cut deep. The story balances emotional vulnerability with raw intensity, and the tension between characters is chef’s kiss—whether it’s romantic, manipulative, or something in between.

Christy’s writing has this haunting, cinematic quality that makes everything feel visceral. You don’t just read this book—you feel it in your bones. If you’re into morally gray characters, high-stakes politics, and dark fantasy with real edge, this is the series starter you’ve been waiting for.

What an amazing paranormal romance that I couldn’t wait to start reading too! Okay, I just enjoy all of Ms. Jade Christy’s vampire stories, and they are quickly becoming quite an obsession for me to get them and read them all. Sure, they don’t take long to read because they are fast-paced page-turners, but also Ms. Christy writes wonderfully well. It begs the question: Are vampires overdone and old? No, I can say that I relish them all and even though this book is similar to her other vampire tales, this one is different, with a magical place in Nivara that I hate to admit it, but I want to visit too. I did notice the villain, Darian’s name, changed only once to Darius, but this didn’t really detract from the tale. Plus, I think Dominic was just showing how angry he was at the situation. I still enjoyed him. I did have a big girl crush on Cassandra though. Well, onto the next book!

A darkly intriguing start with lots of potential!

The Light of Blood is a fresh spin on vampire lore with a heroine who’s more brainy than bitey. Cassandra is smart, stubborn, and unexpectedly tangled in a world of shadows, secrets, and sizzling tension. The science-meets-supernatural angle was unique and fun, and the slow-burn romance with Dominic definitely brings the heat.

That said, the pacing wobbled a bit in places, and some plot points felt more setup than payoff, but with a big cliffhanger and high stakes, I’m curious to see where it all goes. If you like vampires, magic, and forbidden chemistry, this one’s worth sinking your teeth into.

The first book of the trilogy. This is a paranormal romance. We get to meet vampires, witches and fae. Cassandra is a brilliant young woman and also human. She has discovered a cure to allow vampires to walk into daylight. It is seen as both a freedom for than and a curse by others. Some vampires view her as a hero while others wish her harm. She will find herself searching for clues in the vampire’s world. But this will only bring her more danger. Some stand with her while others would see her destroyed. The author has written some amazing characters and a world filled with mystery and danger. The ending does bring a large cliffhanger.

Cassandra is finding new truths about her life in Nivara. She is a very smart woman who is asked to help research old transcripts and translate them. In this town she finds a different way to live including the man she is meant to bond with. Dominic becomes obsessed with Cassie very quickly. Their blood bond makes them inseparable . This is their love story and her saga. It is powerfull . The twist and turns are so satisfying to read. The author sis a great job with the storyline and the characters. I would give it more than 5 stars if possible.

Cassandra Burke wanted to give vampires freedom of choice when she created the Lumière, a serum that allowed them to walk safely in daylight, though not all vampires agree they should leave the dark. Her reputation as a vampire researcher earns her a rare invitation, for a human, to Nivara, the esteemed vampire city.

Join Cassandra as she makes friends, enemies, and discoveries that could change Nivara forever.

Jade Christy's novel keeps you on your toes with electrifying turns, sexy seductions, and an ending that will leave you buying the next book as soon as you finish the last page.

Embrace the Light

Cassandra, a brilliant scientist, is on the verge of a breakthrough that gives vampires the ability to walk in the sun. However, those who wish to remain in the shadows pose a problem in more ways than she knows. Meeting the mysterious Dominic may be fate, but can they endure? While the romance may not be the center of attention for this book, the mystery and political thriller of vampire society is very intriguing. I can't wait for the next installment.

I'm sad to say I wasn't really impressed with this book. It had a lot of interesting elements and a lot of potential, but some of the characters were just a little too cliche or predictable. I think the relationship just went a little too quickly and not enough angst between the characters to make it interesting enough. I got about 85% through and I just had a hard time pushing through the rest. I moved on to something else. I probably will not be going on to the rest of the series. I WANTED to like it. I really did.

Interesting a human and a vampire that are fated mates. You have a prophecy that states that the bloolight can either destroy the ancients or set them free. I already know that Cassandra doesn't die or everything ends now. So it will be interesting to see how she recovers from her injury that should kill her. It seems that there is a rebellion going on in Darian Vex's ranks. This is going to be a very interesting series, just like the other one that I read.

This book kept my interest the whole time. They chapters are short which is nice, except when you’re the person who always says “just one more chapter” and you’re up all night reading, haha. The plot was great, the characters had depth. Of course it ended on with a huge cliffhanger, so cannot wait for the next book!

This story is unique and intriguing. I loved the dynamic of the main characters, and she is awesome. I love when the female main character is a scientist! I would reccomend giving this book a shot if you want a different take on a vampire story than what you normally find.

A Whirlwind Story with a Cliffhanger

This story is an interesting take on the vampire romantasy with prophecy and a chosen one. Dominic and Cassandra immediately have the chemistry you want and the stakes are introduced early. There’s more to Dominic and Cassandra than we realize. Excited for book two.

I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of this book. I feel that the editing could use some work and there are some areas that could use some more “fleshing out”. Overall, very fun and unique idea from an indie author!! The romance added some to plot with a spicy scene or two. Interested in how these series will progress!

What a wasted opportunity :( the author seriously has such a great story line and so many great character arcs. But the writing was so bad… we chose this book for book club and everyone struggled with the poor writing or most dnf’d the book.
